Steve Ballmer has described the next release of Windows as the company’s “riskiest product bet”. It is understood that Microsoft will feature deep cloud integration into the future OS to realise its vision of “three screens and a cloud”. One Microsoft employee recently said he believes Windows 8 will be the “most important Windows ever shipped.”

There is a lot of expectation from Windows 8, especially because it has to follow up on the highly successful Windows 7.

Opening this thread as a one-stop resource for all Windows 8 news, leaks, rumors, screenshots, device updates, etc.

Here is a List of Noteworthy New Features known so far. Will describe these in following posts.

  • Factory Reset without losing personal info
  • Network Backup, "History Vault"
  • ISO Mounting (Link 6)
  • Full PDF Support, "Modern Reader" (Link & Unlock)

  • New OEM Activation 3.0 (OA 3.0) rumored to be EFI based.
  • User controls and picture on the right side of the taskbar. Rumored LiveID integration.
  • New configurable Welcome Screen based on Windows Phone 7 lock screen. Includes icons for power management, date and time, accessibility options, and audio controls for music playback. (Link 5 & Video)

More to come.

Right, now on to downloading.

This is Milestone 1 build 7850 Windows 8 Enterprise. See here and here for download links. For torrents see here, mirrors are here. Windows 8 has OEM BIOS Activation (OA) version 3.0 for anti piracy and this build has a timebomb lock so the BIOS needs to be backdated before activation. See here for activation.

Please read first before installing, read the posts on on betaarchive.com and forums.mydigitallife.info how to install and run Windows 8 on a VM.

Windows 8 Ribbon UI

When Microsoft introduced the Ribbon user interface as a replacement for the overgrown menus and toolbars in Microsoft Office 2007, many were shocked. The change was audacious for such a mature software product, and it completely blew away years of ingrained shortcuts and skills. But the Ribbon UI was also innovative, and useful, and it provided a way to make previously hidden functionality far more discoverable. It was so successful, in fact, that Microsoft began adding it to other products, including the Windows Live Essentials apps and, in Windows 7, both Paint and WordPad.In Windows 8, Ribbon usage is accelerating again, and Microsoft’s next major OS will include this UI in the most visible of all possible places, Windows Explorer. In early builds of Windows 8, this Ribbon UI is only half-finished and, frankly, of dubious value.

Posted Image

In Windows 8, the Windows Explorer shell sports a new Ribbon UI.

If Microsoft goes through with this change, the Ribbon will replace the menu and toolbar in today’s Explorer windows, and as in Office, it will make many more features visibly discoverable, albeit at the expense of onscreen real estate and, we think, attractiveness.

Posted Image

Various Explorer Ribbon tabs. (The icons are just placeholders.)

As with Office 2010, there are various dynamic Ribbon tabs that can appear as well, including Library Tools (when viewing Libraries), Picture Tools (when one or more image files are selected), and Disk Tools (in Computer view), among others.

Posted Image

Examples of dynamic Ribbons in the Windows 8 shell.

You can also hide the Ribbon, which might explain why a few view style choices are duplicated in the status bar. (Another theory is that these items are there to accommodate other UI types like Aero Lite–formerly called Aero Basic–and Immersive, the tiles-based UI that is based on the Windows Phone "Metro" look and feel.)

A hidden Ribbon (with dynamic Disk Tools tab), and a close-up view of the status-based based view style toggles.

And as with other Ribbon UIs, Explorer’s Ribbon now sports a new File menu that, like the one in Office 2010, is pretty expansive.

Immersive Tablet tile UI

Windows 8′s worst-kept secret, perhaps, is that it will include a Windows Phone-inspired, Metro-like, tiles-based user interface as an alternative to the more mainstream Aero and Aero Lite (formerly Aero Basic) UIs. Aimed at small, touch-based devices like tablets and phones, this new UI, called Immersive, is also one of Windows 8′s most locked-down features. And in the recently leaked builds, it’s proven impossible, so far, to unlock.

One clue to the Immersive UI, however, exists in a new Immersive version of Internet Explorer, which looks and works much like Windows Phone’s IE Mobile, but uses the desktop IE 9 renderer.

Posted Image

Browser history is implemented similarly to tabs in IE Mobile, with square, simple thumbnails. But IE Immersive picks up some nice site colorization functionality from desktop IE 9 while displaying those tabs in the tabs screen.

Modern Reader

Microsoft will apparently be including its own PDF reader in Windows 8. And this is the first app discussed so far that utilizes the new AppX application package type.

Posted Image
Modern Reader, displaying Windows Phone 7 documentation.

The application itself is simple enough. It displays PDFs in full fidelity, as you’d expect. You can zoom in and out, and there’s a page scrubber on the side of the application window for document navigation.

Posted Image
Modern Reader with Back button in upper left.

If you jump ahead using the scrubber, a Back button appears in the upper left corner so you can return to your previous spot. It also supports side-by-side page views.

Of even more interest, perhaps, Modern Reader is the first actual AppX application uncovered. AppX is a new type of packaged application model in Windows 8, and it very closely resembles Windows Phone 7 application packages. For this reason, the AppX application type could be common to both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 (codenamed “Apollo”), providing developers with a way to write applications that target and can transition between a variety of devices, including traditional PCs, tablets, and phones.

Portable Workspace allows you to run Windows from a USB device

Posted Image

Description of Windows 8 portable workspace

Windows 8 build 7850.0.winmain_win8m1.100922-1508 contains a number of references to a brand new feature in Windows: Portable Workspaces. Microsoft will allow Enterprise customers to create USB storage driven copies of Windows. “Portable Workspace is a Windows feature that allows you to run Windows from a USB storage device,” notes Microsoft in its description of the feature inside Windows 8. Users at mydigitallife unveiled the features inside 7850 and discovered that the feature requires at least 16GB of space.

The addition of such a feature in Windows will ease document compatibility and application feature differences for information workers. It appears as though Microsoft is targeting the feature at Enterprise customers who may have several varied uses for portable versions of Windows. IT professionals will welcome the feature as it will empower them to quickly boot a copy of Windows 8 to diagnose any existing problems on the local PC installation. Information workers will be able to power up a copy of Windows 8 on a client’s PC with their own documents and workspace to securely and easily share any presentations or company data.

It’s not yet clear exactly how Portable Workspaces work once created. The 16GB limitation could also indicate a minimum HDD space for Windows 8 across the board. One thing that is clear from the latest leaks is that Microsoft is working hard to add a number of exciting new features to Windows, making its next-generation operating system an exciting affair.

Advanced Task Manager revealed

Windows 8 Advanced Task Manager

The latest builds of Windows 8 include an “Advanced Task Manager” interface that provides Windows 8 users with greater information on running processes, services and overall system resources. The new Task Manager is a combination of Microsoft’s Task Manager interface and Microsoft’s Resource Monitor. Processes are now listed in a coloured interface to demonstrate their strain on the system. The new process list includes a touch friendly way to kill applications.

Aero Auto-Colorization

In Windows 7, Microsoft added a new Personalization interface, allowing users to customize their desktops as they wished. But a few obvious features were missing, and in Windows 8, the company is finally filling in the gaps. Today’s revelation is one such feature: The ability to automatically configure the color of Aero elements, like the Start Menu, Windows Explorer windows, and the taskbar based on the desktop wallpaper.

To make this change, you visit the Personalization interface, which is basically unchanged since Windows 7, and then click Window Color. As you can see below, there’s a new option in the grid of window color swatches: Automatic. (Microsoft removed one of the brown colors to make room.) Click this and then click the Save changes button.

New to Windows 8: The ability to automatically color Aero based on the underlying wallpaper.

Now, as you rotate through different wallpapers, the window color will change to match the wallpaper (in Aero mode only). Some examples can be seen below.

Windows App Store (?)

The Cnbeta screenshots appear to be early prototypes or could even be fake. (For example, the name Windows App Store is suspicious.) What is known, of course, is that Microsoft is adding an app store to Windows 8, and it’s not surprising that such an effort could looks a lot like Apple’s App Store for Mac, as these shots do. It’s a good model to follow.

SmartScreen file checking security

Posted Image

As Microsoft anticipates a richer “apps” ecosystem for Windows 8, they appear to be taking some extra steps to shield users from malicious applications with the introduction of an in-built file verification policy powered by the SmartScreen Filter.

Originally a feature from Internet Explorer but now also (annoyingly) integrated in Windows Live Messenger 2011, SmartScreen is practically a dynamic list of known “illegal, viral, fraudulent, or malicious” URLs that Microsoft manually or algorithmally identifies. It uses this list to compare the link or executes a user visits or downloads, warning if there’s a match.

Although it’s been proven highly effective to prevent socially engineered malware, it’s also subject to false positives which frustrates developers to “clear their name”.

In Windows 8, SmartScreen appears to serve two purposes – to reactively check the file system and proactively prevent any downloaded applications from running that are unknown to the filter.

This addition mechanism adds to a growing list of security-centric features and tools including but not limited to digital signing, User Account Control, Windows Defender and Security Essentials that Microsoft is building into Windows or making available for free. A win for users of course.
