  3. BSNL WiMAX Review

As far as I am aware, Mobile ( or wireless ) broadband and present WiMAX is different. I didnt knew that the present wimax that BSNL is offering can be used in our phone too... ( They dont have such an ad ) And I have contacted a few senior officials of BSNL and they all told that the service of WIMAX is poor mainly because of the mobile tower issue and they need modem to be in LoS with tower.. And they adds this too , that they cannot guarantee that the connection will be through always.. because of insufficient number of service techs who is capable of fixing if something goes wrong in the mobile tower. ( bsnl is even considering to withdraw the present wimax implementation ) Anyways - this is all 3rd person reviews / experiences which I just shared with you all ... It was also hard for me to believe.. up to you to take it or reject it.
  4. BSNL WiMAX Review

ok guys, here is an important update... I have been to the BSNL office 2 days ago to apply for WiMAX and the BSNL officials are not presently accepting the application. They says the WiMAX is an outdated technology and it is showing a lot of issues for the users who has installed it. ( At least not fit for kerala... ) Further, Since its a Microwave dependant, the modem and the mobile tower should be in LoS ( Line of Sight). Otherwise the WiMAX wont work. I even had a talk with a customer, and he too says too, that the connection id through on at a particular position for the Modem, and if it is misplaced, the connection will be lost. The chances for thunder to hit the modem is also too high... And the BSNL officials even think that the introduction of wimax is a product of a conspiracy whcih was planned against BSNL by other telecom providers to damage its reputation by providing bad or outdated technologies... ( I guess its high time to get these sectors disinvested so that better administration will happen ) Vinod
  5. hey guys, I was asked 3k by one of the members for the phone configuration and I know one more guy ( another newbie ) here who was asked the amount to get his phone unlocked. I am a member of this forum since mid 2007, but unfortunately I haven't been an active member. And I think most of the gurus here help those guys who are active contributors to the forum. ( That should be the reason why I haven't received a response from many guys whom I have contacted for a help ) - I admit that its a fault from my side that I've been a very passive member but I believe we should extend the helping hand irrespective of the post count if it is really needed. Well, commercialisation of an entity will happen as it grows and if there is a way for others to earn from it... If the entity itself can head the commercialisation part, that will be a much better solution... ( may be a store for rimweb, where the store will sell handsets and solutions at a competitive price? ) so that the website also will be benefited through it.. after all money matters! I do not see a major issue with that. Here, the question is should we allow ourself to get exploited... I could have saved many days' work if I paid 3k and let them configure my phone. In that case, I'd loose all the thrill in configuring the phone, and the joy when I saw my Hero ringing for the first time, at around 3 AM... and the joy when I was holding 2 phones on my 2 ears and checking if voice is working... and calling my friends at that time to share the joy! I proudly says that I configured my phone from scratch.. and I can help any one who need help to configure their hero.. Next is the money... If I paid the 3k to get my phone configured, I could have bought one from the sellers here ... no need to import from the US. I think I am clear here!
  6. BSNL WiMAX Review

great! looking forward for the wimax!
  7. BSNL WiMAX Review

nice to hear that the frequent disconnection that the bsnl broadband have is not in wimax ... and its even nicer to hear that you have configured the wifi router too I need the session to be maintained atleast for the time I am working and having a static IP will save the session in case any disconnection happens. At present I am using asianet and their internet, as well as support really s**ks in my area... Vinod
  8. BSNL WiMAX Review

nice review, Arun.. I am also going to apply for one tomorrow.. And as ur, I am also staying some where near to a BSNL office ( tover ) and I hoope the initial tests will be fine.. I am a bit confused on which plan to apply for, the 1K plan comes without a static IP and the 2K one, the static IP is included.. So my question is you you have frequent disconnections or DHCP reset issue? Of course, it varies from town to town, but still... Is that a built in Wi-Fi router ? Vinod
  9. Sprint Htc Hero - The Latest Android Kid On The Block

Hello friends, I wanted to add a reply earlier, but was held back due to some personal matters. so, basically I got a new htc hero imported from the US the previous week and it I was like Alive in Wonderland with the phone. Dont knowing what to do with it. With my very nascent knowledge and natural laziness, I started with this thread gone ahead and upgraded the ROM and rooted it.. bit still nothing happened Then I tried to contact a few of the forum gurus by PM and there was not much joy . I then got reply from one of the member that he can program and set up the phone for 3K which I kept as a plan B, in case the plan A didnt work out! . It was then I found an email from Gagan Sunny ( sunny1974) offering his help. It was then I got introduced to the qualcomm tols as well as the cdma workshop etc. After a few hours of work, may be 8 - 10, I managed to get my phone working - I was able to make calls and send text messages etc.. was so for almost a week and then I started working again on the data part. I spend almost a day googling and browsing and then I sent a message to Dhiraj Bhai who gave me hints on setting up the phone etc. Then again I messed up with the QPST and the phone halted working again! , Then I traced back to the error and fixed it. Then I even entered vinod / vinod123 for the username and password to set up data ( LOL ). I owe a lot to both Gagan and Dhiraj for their assistance and waking me through the errors and helping me to fix them patiently! And I am sorry for being late for this update in here. And the phone, its really awesome and I am yet to explore much on the apps and other stuff.., I have setup gmail and exchange server and gps , compass etc working well. And I even upgraded to Alap's ROM. I have installed a couple of work related apps and I am yet to configure it. The weather widget is quite interesting and what most amused me is the gmail sync. I have almost dropped my jaw seeing it. I need to upgrade to the latest ROM and that in the next in list God knows how it will go!!! Thanks guys... and keep up with your good work! Vinod
  10. Htc Hero Sprint

hey guys, back again, got my phone and doing some stuff on it! i got it rooted, tried to remove some sprint apps, and ended up removing many required apps :-D , and the restored the backup ... yep , its going fun so, what I should do next ? I need to upgrade ROM to the new 2.1 ?
  11. Htc Hero Sprint

Well, that comes with 2 year contract ... and you have to pay a fixed amount monthly to the service provider ... its not at all useful for us ... I have seen a few deals in the ebay and similar websites whcih offered the phone with out contract some where between 250 - 350 $ not pretty sure how you mean, Hetal,... I was figuring out a phone bought from US, without a contract, can be unlocked and we can use it here .. yes ofc - it involves a lot of stuff to do before it can be used here... I have been going through the steps in this forum along with those in mobile-file.us , xda developers etc Yet to have a complete "How To" to do the stuff.. ( still in the learning stage! ) Vinod!
  12. Htc Hero Sprint

Hey guys, @Chinthan , thanks for the tip - I am in touch with Sadikk.. @Sumit, yea - I realise that now... May be i have to buy from this community itself! @Hitesh - thanks for that link. There is a lot of info in it! still trying to catch up! It looks like that the phone is being sold @ 99$ with a contract of 2 years or so ( not much useful! ) Thanks again! Vinod
  13. Htc Hero Sprint

Hello Guys, I am quite dump in the area of mobile phones... I have tried to gather the info from older topics , but I guess the information is too much scattered... so here I am! I have liked the look and feel of HTC hero sprint and looking forward to own it.. now the question is how to ? I am not sure if we get this piece through a local store here or need to be brought from abroad ? I have a friend who will be coming down to India from the US next month, ( in May ). So I was wondering if I could ask him to bring one for me ? If I do so, will I be able to use it here just like another phone or do I need to 'unlock' it so that we can use it in reliance cdma network ? If I can get the piece from India, where is the store, and what is the price ? thanks a lot, guys!
  14. Thinking To Change My Phone

Hello Friends, I have been a member of this forum, but has been quite passive. I am not a good techie on the side of mobile phones, but far better than a dumb . I have been using 6275 for the last 2.5 years and now I am thinking to change it. Since I am on RIM cdma, I am not quite sure what are the choices I have. Whenever I visit a store, to take a look on the options I have, most of the HTC sets will be out of stock :-/. I am not 100% updated about the present CDMA market, and hence this post to gather your opinion about various handsets. My expectations are: 1. QWERTY keyboard. 2. Seamless Internet browsing 3. audio / video playing and recording 4. Bluetooth, customisable storage, 5. Good and fast OS ( dont mind if it is linux or windows ) 6. WiFi ( not necessary ) I prefer not to buy a touch phone I feel HTC is the best bet. But I am not sure which all models are available for RIM CDMA or if we can buy GSM phones and get it compatible to CDMA or whatsoever. It will be highly helpful, if you can share your experience and thoughts. I live at Kochi, Kerala. I can travel up to Bangalore, to buy the phone... if anyone can recommend a good store or dealer for the purpose Thanks, Vinod
