  2. Handset Launches - News Snippets

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/mobiles/First-impressions-Moto-E-smartphone/articleshow/35067347.cms i think this is better value for money [not just cheaper] than the moto g i would have bought it except for the lack of flash and front cam maybe i'll wait for the next gen 'e+1' ...
  3. bought this from: http://www.flipkart.com/tp-link-tl-mr3020-portable-3g-3-75g-4g-wireless-n-router/p/itmd8fsebcjkr94y its working with my rcom dongle but not with mtnl [in place of its wifi router] i changed the setting from '3g' to 'AP' on the side switch [access point] i was hoping to replace the mtnl clunky box with this sleek one but no luck 3g is also very slow [around 100-200 kbps] but i've read that it might get better with a firmware upgrade has anyone tried to replace their mtnl bb / wifi router with a 3rd party box?
  4. cheapest 50inch led that i've found: Vu 50" Full HD LED TV - 50K160 Rs 49900 on ebay & homeshop sites has anyone seen any better deals? the rs. 4 k discount code was not working for ebay as of a week ago
  5. Indian Politics - The Dance of Democracy

not just movies - fingerprinting is a standard part of law enforcement investigations in all developed countries for many decades now forensic science is making dna id a routine practice abroad as usual we will remain 25-35 years behind current procedures due to lack of data security audits, the biometrics stored in aadhar can also be used for fraud [implicating innocents] do lookup how easily iphone5s fingerprint lock can be bypassed by duplicating the image of the owner's thumb
  6. yes but one of the reviews posted said it did not work for cdma so i wanted to be sure before buying... In the product specs given for this product at company website it mentions " "Share a 3G/4G* mobile connection, compatible with 120+ LTE/HSPA+/UMTS/EVDO 3G/4G USB modems"link is given here..http://www.tp-link.com/lk/products/details/?model=TL-MR3020#fea Also, if you read few reviews on Flipkart on this product page, few of the review mention reliance net dongle that has been used with this product.
  7. looking to buy a 3g usb to wifi converter / adaptor since my mtnl wifi does not reach all the bedrooms. i was planning to get: TP-LINK TL-MR3020 Portable 3G/3.75G/4G Wireless N Router from: http://www.flipkart.com/tp-link-tl-mr3020-portable-3g-3-75g-4g-wireless-n-router/p/itmd8fsebcjkr94y for rs. 1,300 they have not yet responded to my query if it will work with cdma / rcom dongles anyone ever tried this for netconnect+ ?
  8. Must Have Android Apps For Your Smartphone - Part II

ola and meru have cab booking apps also in the play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.olacabs.customer now we just need a single app for all cab companies in any city so we don't have to check driver availability individually https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.winit.merucab also there should be a ban on the destination fields since its illegal to refuse short fares https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ubercab
  9. Must Have Android Apps For Your Smartphone - Part II

tried it but did not work for me anyone else given this code a shot? maybe its not for existing accounts... did it with all upper and all lower case also just to be sure
  10. Must Have Android Apps For Your Smartphone - Part II

by 'wildcard' ; i meant *@domain.name format emails where * is any set of letters e.g., a@domain.name ab@domain.name abc@domain.name etc. even the rs. 300 credit will pay for itself with just 2 new logins / domain annually... BTW didnt follow you on wildcard part. Please help me understand. Always eager to learn/know new new things pls don't use your debit card since uber requires ur cvc/cvv 3 digit code just to register if the uber servers get hacked or card data stolen ur entire savings could get drained abroad where no rbi mandated password is required with a credit card, at least u can dispute the charges
  11. Must Have Android Apps For Your Smartphone - Part II

now i'm inspired to use u.s. phones for the $20 credit lets see if it applies to my 1st trip on that account here's a way to save time with unique emails for about rs. 1/day you can register a domain with any company avoid net4india since this feature is not offered with the basic registration then you can setup a wildcard / default id to which any incoming mail / verification can be fwd so you get unlimited unique verifiable mails @ your domain name instead of creating dozens of dummy webmails which you will never use again a single $20 uber credit will cover almost 4 years of domain renewal charges! one day they will start requiring unique cards for the credit but until then enjoy discounted rides...
  12. Must Have Android Apps For Your Smartphone - Part II

i think u might have got lucky does it show ur balance? take a ride to see if u get the benefit i never had this issue with any +91 phone after entering your phone check which flag is displaying next to it so you know the currency for credit I registered with Indian mobile number only. But the promo code is giving me $ discounts instead of INR credits.
  13. Must Have Android Apps For Your Smartphone - Part II

that would be awesome but its ONLY for that country i.e., your $20 credit will work in the US only in theory but test it out if you have usa phones to register how will the indian drivers contact you to confirm the trip? i got HVN's 20$ off with the coupon instead of Rs 300 credit. Is it applicable in India?
  14. Must Have Android Apps For Your Smartphone - Part II

i somehow messed up the formatting after copy / paste above. you get only one credit per phone but you can use the same card multiple times for each new user. currently they are not blocking landlines if you use <+91 std number> in 10 digit format so i used my work and home phones for additional credits! i had already setup call forwarding from both numbers to my mobile so it was no biggie. in uae you get a more generous aed 80 bonus [about rs. 17.3 / dhiram this month] we got lexus 3 times so there is not much variety but the drivers are better than the regular taxi [camry] you can use the same promo code anywhere for the signup discount worldwide. el91c the amount of credit is based on your country code [e.g., usa = $20] since we got prepaid sim [du is offering 100mb free for aed 55] we used both mobiles for our uber credit even used the hotel landline once! but i put our room number into the passenger name to allow the driver to contact us. you see a driver photo / name / car number after booking but no colour - only make / model so it may require calling the driver in case of many similar cars in the middle east [e.g. lexus]
  15. Must Have Android Apps For Your Smartphone - Part II

uber cabs [free app] i used this service in delhi, mumbai, and dubai its about 50% more than meru / mega but willing to do short distances unlike the rest of radio taxi which claim 'unavailability' min fare is rs. 200 no cash payments [card only] no phone support cancellation fee is also rs. 200 no advance bookings no website booking - only mobile apps [ios / bb / android] you can't choose your car unlike ola luxury avg response time after app booking is usually 15-25 min depending on your gps location / traffic rs. 20 / km and rs. 2 / min so if you are going a short distance then its much cheaper to make him wait. all uber drivers get iphone4! if they forget to switch on the meter on the handset, your ride is free [remember no cash payments] make sure they switch it off when you reach else you might accidently get billed for more. here is an example for those familiar with south delhi: if you need to go from lodhi gardens to khan market for an hour of shopping instead of paying rs. 200 each way just pay the waiting of rs. 120 / hour and your total round trip will be around rs. 250-275 [that's a 25-30% discount] this only works for short trips of 1-2 km each way i got the following cars: bmw 3 series accord fortuner mb c class e class audi a6 q3 surprisingly the accord and fortuner were more comfortable than the 3 series or c class on delhi roads also more spacious at the back if you are tall or fat like me! e class and a6 were the most comfy in the rear [ideal for airport drop off in style] try to avoid airport pickups - it was a pain in mumbai since the driver had to circle around as there is a strict time limit so it involves more coordination than simply taking an a/c taxi directly also eastern suburbs are currently not covered [chembur / govandi / deonar etc] it shows as 'outside service area' if you try to book real time map shows location of car all new registrations will get a rs. 300 credit if you enter a discount code valid for 2014: PROMO el91c
  16. 3G Topup for Reliance GSM Postpaid

i have a postpaid with 2gb quota but almost rs. 1 / mb when i exceed the monthly limit is there any 3g topup for postpaid in rgsm this year?
  17. Indian Politics - The Dance of Democracy

i think it was misguided to ban fdi since it goes against the basic tenet of 'aam admi': fdi in fruits / veggies result in better prices for poor farmers and lower prices for retail customers the only people who are hurt are the middle men who have been exploiting the marginal farmers for over half a century now also fdi in groceries reduces cpi inflation [wpi would be only marginally impacted] just to protect 1-2% of the stake holders, kejriwal is hurting the remaining 95-96%
  18. has anyone tried this option? http://www.mahindracarsindia.com/2013/09/mahindra-reva-to-rent-out-e20-to-the-public.html i think it would be the cheapest automatic rental for self drive [if not any car currently] you will need to add VAT and insurance to the daily rental but it still seems like a good deal i was thinking about how to deal with the recharging problem since the cord would have to be at least 10-20 m longer to reach from the parking to the nearest a/c plug [15 amps] not to mention the hassle of cars driving over the wire across the road since there is no space for parking inside the house gates assuming the theoretical range of 100 km max which will reduce with ac usage to below 90 km; i'll try to take it for 2-3 days at a time and simply return / replace with a new rental so they can keep recharging at the store as i usually drive about 10-20km daily only in delhi since i go almost monthly to delhi, i'll update with my feeble attempt to reduce air pollution and see if its a practical alternative to taking cabs around. m&m should introduce a variant with power steering, solar roof and removable batteries which we can carry indoors for charging to make it more usable else it just a good concept which 99% of taxi users will never avail in the metros. only those with enough parking will have the space to install the solar charging stations with batteries at rs. 1.5 lakh each ... anyone driven any electric car yet?
  19. self drive rental in delhi of automatic

true, but they have to start somewhere; my guess is that there are few takers so even with such low quantities they are readily available
  20. great news for us - now if only he could fight piracy in india by cutting prices by 2/3rd - 3/4th for all ms software it would be worth celebrating! why 2/3rd you may wonder? because that's the PPP between india and america [the ratio is 3-4 x depending on cost of living in delhi/mumbai vs rest of the country] according to the world bank stats the problem with us is that just beacuse a ceo of a global company is born indian does not imply any change in corp policy that would benefit indians imagine if the new ceo was chinese - he would have immediately incentivised schemes to get chinese users to switch to licensed software e.g., i think a legal copy of windows7 or 8 costs about rs. 5-10 k? so how many people are going pay almost a third the cost of their pc to upgrade? yet in mumbai alone, you can get the pirated one installed for rs. 800 [xp to win7] now imagine instead of charging $100 for upgrading, ms charged just rs. 1,500 [$25] for india many more people with pirated os would be willing to go legal at just double the cost
  21. Investment & Insurance Related Discussions

i agree its very difficult to get claim ratios in india, but please avoid getting mislead by high closure or settlement ratios it has nothing to do with denial or payout ratios denials ratio = # denied / total claims claim payout ratio = actual paid / total claimed most [if not all] insurance companies in the country consider a denied claim as 'closed' or no longer pending so then can quote 90-95% ratios to mislead the public - the balance is usually the number of claims in process which will always be low they will never disclose denials or payouts which is what directly impacts you during any claim abroad its mandatory to disclose these 2 ratios on the application form itself! irda will take another decade to implement these transparency norms... mera bharat mahan! The basic principle before choosing any term plan would be its claim settlement performance. Now, since aegon religare being new & with very small customer base, it is yet to prove itself on this front. Mere satisfactory performance upto policy issuance is not the true indicator. So, as you can see on page no 50 of this public disclosure found here http://www.aegonreligare.com/download/file/fid/2041 the total death claims settled were hardly 79. On % basis, they did settle 79/79 claims that works out to 100% ratio for death claims. But, 79 is a very small number to judge. I have seen ICICI, HDFC, Birla, Aviva with claim settlement ratio anywhere between 90-95% n settling thousands of claim in a year. At the time of me buying Aviva, aegon was cheaper even then, but I did not wanted to go with new company specially when there were lot of rough patches in insurance industry. That said, as long as you are disclosing every material fact in your proposal form, no company is going to reject your claims. Claims are denied most of the times due to wrong information given at th time of buying for ex. 1. Not disclosing smoking / drinking habits 2. Not disclosing previous policies 3. Any other important material disclosure Most of the times, agents are the culprits for above points as they will never ask you these points and fill the form blindly for the sake of issuance n thereby commissions. So, to sum up, go with any company that meets your requirements, but see that you read n answer each n every point in form correctly. If so, you need not worry...
  22. Apple relaunches outdated iPhone 4 in India

there will still be people lining up to pay a premium price for outdated hardware; that's the power of the brand if they launch another exchange offer for 3gs and reduce the net price to rs. 15k for iphone4 as reported in ET; even i would go for it! its still better than my year old karbonn android ics which overheats or freezes up weekly with pathetic battery life and constantly running out of memory [i.e., ram and not sd card]. this came at a bargain rs. 7k last year but its still a waste of money due to poor quality hardware.
  23. Indian Politics - The Dance of Democracy

that's such an extreme view that it'll be easy to prove wrong; i'll predict at least 2-3 seats for CH! any other guesses for AAP?
  24. Indian Politics - The Dance of Democracy

while i do want AAP to succeed nationally, i don't think they can replicate the delhi results which were a fluke. the regional parties will be prepared to attack where congress took them for granted and vastly underestimated their impact AAP will get about a dozen seats each in the top 6-8 metros but will have a lesser impact in rural areas where voters are paid to show up on election day educated middle class taxpayers will be more likely to vote for AAP than poor / illiterate citizens which are over 3/4th of the national electoral base in mumbai the senas will probably start beating up aap supporters if they start making significant headway else they will be ignored it would be foolish for AK to become a PM candidate without finishing a single term as CM and getting some much needed experience he should do a 'sonia' and allow aap to nominate another person as PM instead since the odds are highly against success this would show him as a real leader and not power hungry
  25. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/telecom/hc-upholds-laws-empowering-cag-to-conduct-audit-of-private-telcos/articleshow/28478754.cms after ril audit comes rcom scrutiny, next up rel energy [delhi] my guess is that ril had gold plated costs by over a billion $ [as ada had claimed during the dispute over gas pricing] obviously rcom + rpower will be a fraction of that but i still expect the delhi discom to be 2-3x more over stating than rcom since the incentives are so much greater... http://www.cag.gov.in/html/about_legal_dpc.htm
