  1. If we look at the connectivity specification of Lyf smartphones - all of them support LTE-FDD Band 3(1800) and LTE-TDD Band 40(2300).  Majority of them, but not all, support Band 5(850) too.  Apparently, any phone that supports all three frequencies should work on Reliance 4G / Jio.  Happy to be corrected if I missed anything though.

I guess I will settle with 5 inched Oppo F1 because it supports all three bands, has good technical specifications with seemingly good camera power.

Here are a couple of links that could help you understand and explore the technical capabilities of LTE bands:

EVDO has vanished from Delhi since last noon! It came for a while in Okhla area in evening. But it has vanished.

1x is as well at its worse. Most of the calls are failing to go through.

The Reliance Store in GTB Nagar, Delhi said that they got the news from their technical team that EVDO has been shutdown and will not be back up.  There was no notification.

I was told that they are planning to start 4G by the end of this month and CDMA will stop working.  However, there is no official notification for that either.

RelianceJio is planning to capture large user base by 4G rollout which has already been delayed and there is no official news on it's launch.  Reliance CDMA is troubling users at this time with their irresponsible behaviour.  Reliance GSM has no reliable network coverage, at least not in NCR region.  Analysts are saying Jio will gain 15% subscriber base when people are talking about porting out of RCOM.

News is saying LYF is fifth largest hanset vendor in India but I have never seen anyone using / buying or even talking about this particular brand.  Reliance Store people are also majorly unaware of it and said they have launched only one handset that's displaying in TV ads called Lyf Flame.  A quick look at eBay and Amazon shows less than 50 people have ever bought this phone online and have actually given bad reviews.  I fail to understand how can a brand which has almost nil online presence dethrone Lava mobile, a well known brand with large advertisement spend, from fifth position - http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/tech-news/Reliance-Jio-pips-Lava-to-become-5th-largest-smartphone-vendor-in-Q1-IDC/articleshow/52308516.cms

Our honourable Prime Minster and whole country is talking about Digital India and Reliance is sailing it's loyal customers in Stone Age direction.

I was bit surprised when I initially read this thread but actually got see this message myself yesternight.

After the confirmation of this news I'm actually excited and eagerly waiting to watch another round of competition, creative advertisements, growing technology, faster speed and how consumer benefits. Reliance has always been wallet friendly and I hope they will continue with this approach after 4G launch.

I believe it is too early to speculate how they are going to operate the network and what will be the future of CDMA but I'm hopeful that the consumer will be the final winner. However, if given a chance I would love to stay with my old handset that fetches 125KBps average EvDo speed and keep experiencing the best sound quality on CDMA.

Let's hope for the best :-)

  4. i am planning to buy a new Reliance Gsm POSTPAID connection

so just wanted to know hws the network in Vivek Vihar , Delhi

Reliance Gsm is very patchy. I used it couple of years back and the network was not good. Meanwhile, I have seen two of my colleagues struggling with network. One is soon going to switch to Vodafone. Don't have idea about the other one to which network he latched to. Airtel and Vodafone are good in Delhi. I have used both as corporate connections. Personally, liked Vodafone because of their tariff plans and network coverage. Not sure which network is best in East Delhi. But I think Vodafone should be better. you can check their website for network coverage of your area or ask your neighbors.

I used Reliance GSM last year in Delhi and was thoroughly disappointed by it's network. It went into Roaming mode every now and then; in my kitchen it would show me roaming 90% of the time. The voice quality was very poor.

Recently, one of my colleague MNPed his TATA CDMA postpaid number to Reliance GSM in Gurgaon and the result was again huge disappointment as the voice quality doesn't seem to have improved yet. My colleague is now majorly using it for data requirements and Vodafone for voice calls.

  5. First and foremost, nearly 99 percent of the imported mobiles being sold on olx are refurbished ones, some have changed lcd with local Chinese ones, soem with repaired motherboard,

Thanks for the valuable insight, I wasn't aware of that. Do you have any experience with eBay for CDMA handsets?

Do you think the imported handsets, if new, could support / display Indian languages?

  6. Thank you for your reply. Was the "HSD" to 55444 the *only* thing that you were asked to do by the CS exec? As far as I recall, it needed to be sent to 55333. It seems, they want us (me actually) to re-register for HSD.

My apologies, I should have been more clear. The customer care executive only registered my complaint and gave me assurance that this will be resolved in 72 hours.

I'm a Reliance CDMA postpaid user and while searching around the I found some site, couldn't recall it, may be it was this site only, which suggested sending keyword "HSD" to 55444. I'm not sure about 55333. You may want to try the former if you are a postpaid user, it's a toll free number anyway.

  7. I've finally raised a Service Request with Reliance customer care, hopefully this will be fixed this week.

    Dear Ashishu,

What did the customer care executive tell you after you raised the complaint?

    Thanks

I was rather lucky this time, the guy who picked my call was very helpful, he actually took the time to listen to me and raised a service request.

Today morning I sent "HSD" to 55444, without the quotes and in less than a minute I received an automated acknowledgement message and after two minutes I received another message stating that my request for EVDO service activation had been completed successfully. I then switched off my phone and got busy with other important things. By evening when I switched it on I found that EvDo was working again!

Not sure how was this resolved but you may want to give the latter option a try - send "HSD" to 55444 without quotes?

Off tangent, but Ashish, isn't that phone a really old one? My wife has it still and she uses it for the CDMA connection only (which is more or less dysfunctional). THE GSM sim slot is unused.

IIRC, its only Android 2.3 or something. I dont even remember the name of the OS. A year back, we foiund a battery for the same, so she started using it with the new battery. I had gifted her the phone in 2012 I think.

Did you root it? I would be very interested in doing the same with her phone.

    THanks,

Yes, your statements about the phone make and model are correct but mine is in good condition, lasts over a day with EvDo data on. I tried rooting it back in the day but it was a nightmare. After the root process was complete it stopped booting up and couldn't proceed after the initial Samsung screen that you see during startup. Fortunately, the OS reinstall process from Samsung service centre worked but I can't factory reset it anymore. If I do, I get the same problem and have to get the OS reinstalled.

  8. I'm looking for a new CDMA phone, unfortunately there aren't much available in the market but I noticed there are many people selling imported handsets on OLX and eBay.in. Usually the imported handsets don't support / display Indian local languages, e.g. Hindi / Gurmukhi. Any suggestions / ideas on this? I'm not interested only in LG / Motorola / Samsung with good configuration and less than 5 inch screen - any suggestions / ideas? Thanks in advance.

P.S. Thanks for your suggestion, I had a bad experience with Appellate authority in the past but I will try again once my new handset requirement is fulfilled.

  9. Hi,

I was wondering if we have any Delhi based group members who use EvDo data on Reliance CDMA network? Every time I raise a service request with Reliance about HSD network they say that I'm the first to complaint about that and they are unaware of any network issues. I guess I'm not the only one though.

Who all do we have on board and what handset do you use? :hypocrite:

I'm Delhi based EvDo user and use Samsung Ace 2 duos (SCH-I589).

  10. Hello there,

I've been using CDMA EvDo on my Samsung SCH-i589 phone for almost two years.

I got my SIM card replaced on Jan 22nd and everything was fine until Friday (Feb 05) but the EvDo data has stopped working from Saturday (Feb 06). When I don't have data enabled I see towers for both the networks (1x and EvDo) but when I connect to data network it changes to 1x.

Not sure how this has happened but both of us have same pain - new SIM card and data stopped working after Friday. Perhaps they have disabled HSD on new SIM cards to accommodate 4G network for Jio or they are focusing more on data dongles?
