New Harddrives May Force Windows Xp Upgrades

A change in hard drive format may force Windows XP users to upgrade to Windows 7.

An article provided by BBC News paints a rather grim picture for Windows XP consumers. It may seem that those still clinging to the fear that Windows 7 will eventually pan out to be another Windows Vista may have no choice but to take the upgrade plunge thanks to the evolution of the hard drive. This won't mean an early death of XP by any means, but more of a performance hit despite other system specs.

Here's how it will work: most hard drives sold in late 2011 may use an advanced format that will make it easier for hard drive manufacturers to produce bigger drives while making them more reliable and less power hungry. Of course, this is a good thing. Bigger games, bigger software, and our addiction to downloadable media means that hard drives need to keep up with the times. Unfortunately, this is where Windows XP comes crashing down in flames.

Current drives are formatted into blocks of 512 bytes in size--this has been standard since the days DOS ruled PCs. By the end of 2011, all new hard drives will be formatted into blocks of 4K in size. Windows XP doesn't know how to handle sectors of that magnitude. To resolve the conflict, the new drives will have the ability to "pretend" they still use sectors 512 bytes in size. Reading data via the emulation isn't expected to be a problem: it's the data writing that may impact performance.

"All other things being equal you will have a noticeable hard drive reduction in performance," said David Burks, a product marketing manager for storage firm Seagate. He also added that it could make a drive 10-percent slower in some circumstances.

With that said, Windows XP users may have some decision-making to do next year if their current drives fail: purchase a new drive and suffer a reduction in performance via Windows XP, or purchase the new drive and a fresh copy of Windows 7.

Ladakh Calling

Ladakh, a dream of many tourers, remains the untouched beauty as ever. Ladakh is often called the Mecca of touring, you should do it once in your life!

I have planned a trip this year, coinciding with the Ladakh festival from 1st to 15 sept each year. This is the itinerary. As I am going by motorcycle, this itinerary is mainly focused on motorcycling. However, if you want to come with family, you can always hire a private car and join the fun.

28 Aug Day 1: reach Srinagar, collect the bikes and go for a shikara ride in Dal Lake.
29 Aug Day 2: Srinagar - Kargil
30 Aug Day 3: Kargil - Leh
31 Aug Day 4: rest in Leh and get the permits made (at the same time you can visit Thiksey, Leh Palace etc.)
1 Sep Day 5: Leh - Khardung La - Diskit/Hunder (Nubra Valley)
2 Sep Day 6: Nubra Valley sightseeing and by afternoon, start heading back to Leh
3 Sep Day 7: Leh - Chang La - Pangong Tso
4 Sep sun Day 8: Pangong Tso - Chang La - Leh
5 Sep Day 9: rest in Leh
6 Sep Day 10: Leh - Upshi - Chumathang - Tso Moriri (Korzok)
7 Sep Day 11: spend the day at Tso Moriri and if you want, move to Tso Kar in the afternoon
8 Sep Day 12: Tso Moriri - Tso Kar - Pang - Sarchu
9 Sep Day 13: Sarchu - Manali
10 Sep Day 14: Rest in Manali
11 Sep Day 15: Ride to Chandigadh
12 Sep Day 16: Chandigadh sight seeing and parcel to mumbai

Some terms for this trip:
1. Riding is a part of trip, not the reason of the trip. We will enjoy the rides, but not like we have to break records and backs. Usually one day of full riding will be followed by one day of full sightseeing.

2. Drinking and smoking will not be part of the trip. You can do if you want, but it's certainly not a part of the itinerary.

3. Budget will of course be strictly maintained , but preference will always be to keep hygiene and not just to save money.

In short, this thread invites adventure couples and even singles, who want to experience the culture and places, and not just roads. If you fit the bill, I am awaiting your posts in this thread.

I have booked Kingfisher tickets for Mumbai Srinagar on 28 Aug 2010, because I want to be in Ladakh while the festival is on. The bike will be parceled to Srinagar, and I will pick it up there.

This is not restricted for Mumbai Pune bikers only, anyone from all over country, who fits the above criteria is welcome.

Converting Car To Ev, Help And Discussion Regarding Achieving The Best

As I posted before, I have decided to make atleast one EV by converting existing IC engine car. There are very interesting facts about EV. Those facts needs separate discussion and its not in purview of this thread so if any one wants to discuss pro and cons of EV or want to discuss controversial stuff, please open another thread. Please do not make this thread polluted. If any one is interested to read more about EV may visit http://ev1.org and loads of other web sites. I will mail free CD's to members who are interested to see documentary called "WHO KILLED EV", Please PM me your address.

Why EV :

IC engines has distinct pluses like range, speed, power, scallability, flexibility etc. They have disadvantages like noise, environmental issue and overly designed vehicles due to unreasonable expectations and considerations while choosing a car. Most people in US drives about 50 KMS a day same must be true even in India. I drive about 55 KMS per day. So may be EV is ideal for many commuters. Also there are load of even government report which says EV is the only practical least polluting opting for vehicles atleast for next 2 decades. Hydrogen Fuel cells or real efficient hybrid is not feasible in near future.

Minimum Requirements for Daily commuters:

Range of about 70-80 Kms (To cover contigencies and degradation of batteries)
Speed : 80 KMPH max. So when battery wears off it may still attain 60 KMPH. Which may be good for city commuting.

Donor Car:

I have chosen two cars one is TATA INDOIGO MARINA (Which I already have, I just have to buy replacement car till EV is available) or Old great work horse - Maruti 800, small, rugged and easiest to maintain, tinker and do odd jobs.

Drive system : AC or DC

AC drives has advantage of safety, widely used industrial technologies (so for trial one can use industrial grade components before specs are finalized to get automotive grade components), reasonable prices of component. But its little complicated as it requires more number of interfaces.

DC motors and drives are cheap due to fewer components. However motor and controllers are expensive and DC is hazardous if not implemented properly.

EDIT -1 :Best part of choosing this would be availability of necessary components easily as I can use components made for Battery operated Fork Lift as it is. BTW if any one knows who manufacture it or can help me to get component, I will be immediate start. COmpoents required: Motor, Controller, Charger and DC to DC convertor.

Still need to go through pro and cons of both systems. Motor required about 12-15 HP (10-12 KW)

Battery:

LiON and LiFePO4 are said to be best battery types for EV but they are expensive and I have apprehension about getting necessary support for chargers, availability of unit batteries / cell in case of faiilures. It saves 35% weight though.

Lead Acid are established types, chargers are available. Batteries are available freely in India. So I may choose this type - atleast for this project. Expected battery 1440 AH (About 250 kgs)

AC or Non AC car:

In Ahmedabad AC is necessity but not sure if I will be going to install AC or not. AC has about 20% toll on power. Means I may need 20% more battery.

Please help me to choose right components and vendors so that cost of this project remains attractive. I have not budgeted any thing so far, but I assume it may be about 1.5 to 2 lakh.

Telecom Majors Invest Heavily To Go Green

Source

MUMBAI: 'Going green' is no more an option for telecom operators. It has become a necessity in a market where margins are nosediving due to tariff wars, denting the profitability of the mightiest. With energy expenses constituting nearly 25% of the total network operating costs, efficient power management holds the key to improving financials, as operators have already shaved other costs to the bone by outsourcing non-core functions.

Equipment vendors like Ericsson, tower companies including Bharti Infratel and network services provider GTL are investing big bucks in bringing out green products and solutions to cut operators’ opex. While a pan-India deployment looks some time away, up to 20% reduction in energy requirements is achieveable in the near future, said industry officials.

India currently has around 3 lakh towers, and the number is expected to increase to 450,000 towers with 900,000 tenants in the next three years. Given the frequent power cuts, each tenant consumes almost 3,000 litres of diesel every year on a shared tower, which increases operations costs.

“Apart from reduction in levies and duties, efficient-energy management has the potential to bring down costs for operators,” said Idea Cellular chief corporate affairs officer Rajat Mukarji. Idea is using bio-diesel on some of its base stations on a pilot basis. “The savings are nominal, as of now, but if it can be replicated on 3-lakh towers across the country, the amount of money that can be saved will be huge,” he said.

GTL president & COO (strategy & new technologies) Sharat Chandra said the company is pumping in Rs 1,400 crore in the first phase for engineering and deploying solutions that reduce energy expenses. “These solutions are targeted to cut energy requirements by up to 20%,” he said. Aircel Cellular is already using these solutions, which include solar systems, micro-wind turbines, adoption of free cooling methods, energy audit, besides others.

GTL has deployed these solutions at more than 5,000 sites, reducing energy consumption and carbon emission. ‘We are planning to turn the entire portfolio of towers into green towers in the next three years,” added Mr Chandra.

While Bharti Airtel’s EBITDA margin declined 1.53% year-on-year to 39.3% in the December quarter, the figure for Idea eroded from 25.3% to 23.5% due to a fierce tariff war. Airtel’s infrastructure arm Bharti Infratel is aiming to cut energy costs by 15% annually with plans to invest Rs 300 crore in seven pilot projects (P7) for reducing energy consumption. “We have undertaken trials for solar power, bio diesel and free cooling, among others. We are rolling out pilots in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where grid availability is poor and diesel costs are high,” said a Bharti Infratel official.

Ericsson V-P (marketing & strategy) P Balaji said: “We are helping operators improve the efficiency of their networks through delivering energy-efficient products, providing optimal network design and introducing the innovative use of alternative energy sources to run these networks, lowering the cost of operations.”

Ericsson has launched its wind-powered radio base station (RBS) site solution in India, offering low-cost of construction and maintenance. The towers do not require feeders and cooling systems, resulting in up to 40% lower consumption of power. It has also undertaken pilots using bio-diesel to cut costs and reduce carbon emissions.

According to Macquarie Equities Research analyst Shubham Majumder, Indian operators run fairly efficient operations with limited scope for improving margins by cutting costs. “Network opex is the only cost lever that would cushion the fall in profitability. Although these green initiatives to cut down the network opex costs are underway, it will be quite some time before they can help telcos attain significant cost savings,” he said.

Is Google Search Coming To Your Tv?

Source

Google is testing a new television programming search service in conjunction with Dish Network, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The service, which appears to be very much in a limited testing phase, runs on a special set-top box and apparently searches content from both the Dish programming guide, as well as web video services like YouTube (YouTube).

Without any details about the specific implementation, it’s unclear how similar this venture is to the new upcoming TiVo Premiere service that was announced last week.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of The Wall Street Journal’s report dealt less with the service itself and more with the technology that powers the set-top box. Apparently, portions of Google’s Android OS power the Google-enabled device. While Android (Android) has been spotted on other devices like tablets and netbooks (or, so-called smartbooks), a move to the embedded device space could be huge.

As consumer electronics rapidly shift toward connectivity (hey, it might have taken us 15 years, but now everything is moving at a rapid pace), there are huge opportunities for embedded systems developers. As it stands, most embedded devices use either a custom-built kernel or a modified version of BusyBox, but Google (Google) could theoretically offer a framework that would be both free and value-rich for device makers, while also offering opportunities that impact Google’s core business.

Of course, this isn’t Google’s first foray into television. Back in 2008, Google AdWords launched Google TV Ads as a platform for companies to buy airtime in various markets. That project hasn’t been as successful as other Google ventures, but perhaps a more direct way of tying search to television would have better results.
