i-mate has reportedly launched the JAMA Windows Mobile 5.0 PDA phone, which the company says is akin to a personal computer in one's pocket.

The JAMA is about 15.6-mm thin, and sports a 2.4-inch 65K color TFT 240 x 320 display, and a 2MP effect camera among other features.

Significantly, the pocket PC is equipped with Windows Mobile 5.0 offering users a complete Microsoft Windows experience comprising MSN Mobile, Instant Messenger, Media Player 10 Mobile, and Internet Explorer.

Besides, JAMA has the usual Microsoft Office Mobile applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Mobile.

Other features of the phone include: dual-band (900/1800MHz) GSM/GPRS and Bluetooth v1.2 for connectivity, up to 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM and a microSD memory expansion slot for storage, and a 300MHz Samsung processor.

Apart from i-mate's usual bundled applications, the JAMA features i-mate Profile Controller for easy profile and ringtone management, i-mate Media Control Panel for one-click access to songs and videos from the homescreen, and i-mate Configurator for locating and setting data connection settings to access the Internet.

The JAMA is available, priced at Rs 15,990.

I hope my strong remarks to claims of phone-manufacturers below are taken in the right spirit.

I have two comments. Firstly, i think phone features have plateaued. Secondly, there is no such thing as "a personal computer in one's pocket". I write this as much as to learn as to express.

Dont you all think that phone features have plateaued and there is nothing really new. We move from Windows 5 to Windows 6. We move from photo quality from ??mp to ?? mp (1.3 mp to 2mp, then to 3mp). We move from Blue tooth 1 to 1.2 etc. But these are all in one generation and I surely would not change my mobile to get only the "improvements". Leaving the iphone and its debates apart, I think except hype, there is no revolution now or in the near future in phones - at least as a lay, non-technical user like me sees. No doubt the improvements matter but not so much. I think the N95 failed (i think it did) probably on this account since it only "improved" on some features.

Then, at least my quest for the pc-in-my-pocket is wholly unsuccessful. and i have used many phones. Neither Windows Mobile 5 nor Palm nor Symbian provide even remotely what a PC does though they do claim and make very pathetic and poor versions of the PC features in their software. Any person who has regularly transferred word files from PC to any such "pocket pc-phones" might agree.

Also, phones are poor imitators of features found in other specialised gadgets. I compared photos from my 2mp Nokia 6265 with photos taken in 2mp mode in Sony Cybershot. I have stopped using 6265 for photos. I have heard music in 6265 (or even Sony mobiles) and the Ipod - again I have preferred carrying an additional gadget - the Ipod - rather than use the Nokia.

Finally, to me, the best solution is to carry a laptop and use the most basic of phones - preferably a black and white one to conserve battery. The phone will do the talking and the laptop with internet will do the rest.

I know these comments should be somewhere else but seeing the review of this new Imate new model, I could not resist writing these lengthy comments which are not in the least intended to offend anyone!

Your comments are totally valid and acceptable Jayant. You have all the liberty to voice your opinion in this forum. In fact, most users finally land up using their phones only for talking and using laptops/ PCs for the rest.

But, at the same time, if companies do not keep on bringing "changes" (may be plateaued), they would not get an opportunity to make "noise" (read advertising). You will find that whether it's a Car manufacturer/ 2 wheeler manufacturer/ TVs/ even chips and colas...they keep on bringing new "models" with tall (and taller) claims. Though, at the end of the day, customer restricts his usage to some of the basic features only; rest all becomes history.

In this networked web 2.0 world, where anything and everything can be done online, there is less and less of a need for carrying huge laptops. For most tasks, all you need is a browser (search,email, IM, document editing, photo sharing, news feed reading, blogging,banking,ticket booking,social networking, even listening to music etc). With almost feature complete mobile browsers like opera mini 4 available for free, the convenience of doing all that from the light weight mobile beats the experience of carrying your bulky laptop around. I am sure you must have tried opera mini 4 beta, if not give it a try.

For the battery problem, I am searching for solutions - I found some chargers which operate on AA cells, and some battery packs from APC which do the same.

thanks a lot to all for informative comments. just a few cents worth more.

users who are concerned with logging along huge laptops could look at, e.g., to Sony Vaio TZ. it is quite expensive - 1.15lakhs but see some features. it is just 1.2 kg in weight. it has 11 hours of rate battery as compared to rated 3.5 hrs others offer. its dimensions are that of an India today magazine - just a little thicker. There are other less expensive models of other brands but I have liked this one the best. And do not rely on what you see on the website - for once, the web photo - though 3D - does not do justice to what you see in the showroom (though I confess i have only caressed it at the showroom and continue to use my 2kg "inferior" laptop!)

i was (and am too) a fan of PDA mobiles (such as Treo, KJam, etc.) who have word, excel, outlook, task, etc. etc. which give me illusion that i have a pc in my pocket. really speaking, these are pathetic versions of what are in the PC. Try to enter, for example, an excel formula in pocket excel. Or try entering a task in a blackberry.

My point is that perhaps many of us, me included, end up paying huge amounts for something that is not what is promised.

And, more importantly, something we do not use. I cannot think of many situations where I need to work on word, excel, etc. but where I cannot open my laptop and quickly finish the job. On most occasions i just need to use my mobile to talk.

But, as a user said above, people have different circumstances and preferences.

Let us not forget that 20-25 years back no one thought we could do video conferencing; we did not realize that Laptop can be used by everyone to do their office work etc…

The “future” is going to be communication and mobility. Whichever technology allows you to take your work along with you wherever you are, wins the race. Obviously, you cannot develop IT solutions using Mobile Phones nor solve business problems using Mobile Phone Excel sheet. But you can send meaningful emails to your colleges when you are away to make their lives easier.

Mobile phone features such as HSDPA, EV-Do may not be a such a glamorous idea just because it has limitation such as battery life, continuity of use, cost involved etc…But Camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Blackberry connect, task synchronization, voice dialing, WAP Browsing are very valuable tools for future business needs.

Don’t forget its capabilities to play music and connect you to FM Channels. Its entertainment values equally interesting.

Just think of a situation, a device which can do 50 % of the managers jobs (emails, PowerPoint, excel, word document, mass storage), 100% of walkman capabilities, 100% of your PDA functions, 50% of digital camera/camera features; apart from its main function of voice connectivity in one instrument. Already it has replaced your wrist watch, alarm clocks and landline phones.

All said & done AFAIK.. PDA is a device which integrates a lot of features of a PC into the mobile so for corporate people this thing is a must .. more features added into this device means making the life much more simple.. as the years go by demand for PDA's is only gonna rise

True devices having multi function is the future.

Stand-alones do the job better.

Multi functions are so well marketted like a Star Trek Gadget.

Making it a must for a sucessful personal.

Incase you break up the cost of each function into a stand alone device,

you may still save some money.

I was very hyped with the multi functions,

but recently I have sobered out, as its not really value for money

& the quality is surely not the best.
