BlackBerry bosses say 'we are not sweating the iPhone'

TORONTO: It seems BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) is not losing its sleep over the euphoria created by the iPhone worldwide.

Steering clear of the iPhone, top echelon at BlackBerry maker at its annual general meeting Tuesday night instead talked about bringing out better products in the future. When shareholders quizzed the top management about their response to the iPhone 3G launch, RIM co-chief executive Jim Balsillie reportedly said his company was not ``sweating the iPhone.''

He said RIM would keep up the momentum and stay focussed on the future, alluding to the new launches planned by the Canadian wireless giant. To match the iPhone, the company is soon likely to unveil the BlackBerry Bold which matches the Apple's device feature for feature.

Like the iPhone, BlackBerry Bold will also operate on the much faster, next-generation 3G network and have a built-in GPS.

The company - which has over 16 million BlackBerry subscribers around the world - has seen its base among non-corporate types grow rapidly during the past two years. Accordingly, to woo students, teens and the youth who have fallen madly for the iPhone because of its touch-screen technology, RIM is said to be developing its touch-screen device to be called BlackBerry Thunder.

But the company has not said anything about it yet.

Another device, aimed at older people and moms, may also be unveiled soon.

Perhaps, the company's new advertising slogan of `BlackBerry for life' sums up its future plans. The BlackBerry bosses also told the shareholders that India, Brazil and Russia were high on the priority list for the $90-billion company started by a college drop-out in 1984.

iPhone 3G vs. BlackBerry Bold!

Design-wise, the phones are quite dissimilar. The iPhone has the sleek, mimimalistic approach to design while the BlackBerry adds the already rich corporate touch to the phone with the excellent QWERTY keyboard and a great screen. Even though the approach to design is different, it's clear that the iPhone would take the crown easily had there been a beauty contest for phones.

We did report some issues with the BlackBerry screen's build quality yesterday, though. The screen is easily scratched and does not inspire confidence like the sturdy and durable iPhone (in spite of its fragile-looking glass screen).

As for the screen's functionality, the BlackBerry's 480x 320 screen trumps the iPhone anyday! It's brighter and better for everything from watching videos to photos. However, the larger size of the iPhone screen tilts the balance slightly in its favour. To answer the question of which screen is the best, the answer is clear - the BlackBerry Bold.

The iPhone OS has been a dark horse of sorts. Even though it is based on the MAC OS, it lacks some basic features like copy-paste. That's a shame for a smartphone. But with the eye candy and functionality that the iPhone OS gives, it still takes the crown as one of the best smartphone platforms available today. As for the BlackBerry, it is well known that BlackBerry loyalists swear by it. But there is little change from the previous versions. To put it simply, you won't find a guy buying the Bold just for its OS. On the contrary, most people get the iPhone for that very reason. Moreover, the number of apps for the iPhone, with the App Store and the new SDK will increase exponentially. As BGR put it, "the iPhone wins over any other handset in the world in regards to applications."

As for the other facets, no device can come close to the BlackBerry when it comes to email. Not even the iPhone with MobileMe and exchange server support. E-mail has always been RIMs domain and it seems it will be like that for quite some time. Call-quality wise, there is little to choose between the two.

On a final note, it is clear that the Bold is an effort to enhance the multimedia abilities in a device known for its corporate affinity. The iPhone on the other hand is a consumer-friendly device which in its latest avatar is much more corporate-friendly.

BlackBerry makers launch new smart model to take on iPhone

Global telecom major Research in Motion (RIM), makers of mobile handset BlackBerry, has finally unveiled its much touted BlackBerry Bold smartphone.

The new device, which comes within weeks of the global launch of Apple's iPhone, was launched in Austria Thursday. Like the iPhone, the BlackBerry Bold will also operate on the much faster, next-generation 3G network and has a built-in GPS.

Rich in features, including a half-VGA LCD display with 480x320 resolution, powerful 624 MHz processor and one GB internal storage memory, the BlackBerry Bold is being described as a premier smartphone for business and enterprise users by its makers, the Waterloo-based Canadian company.

With a 2 megapixel camera with video recording capability, built-in flash and digital zoom, the new device also boasts an advanced media player that displays pictures and slideshows quickly, plays movies smoothly in full screen mode and manages an entire music collection.

A RIM statement said its audio can be played over the handset's dual speakers in rich, stereo sound, and when using headphones or external speakers, the media player gives the user an equalizer with 11 preset filters - like "Lounge", "Jazz" and "Hip Hop" - that boost or soften audio ranges to create the perfect ambience.

Though the Bold version has been designed to meet increasing requirements of business professionals during the day, the company said the new smartphone also 'indulges the consumer experience during lunchtime, evenings and weekends.'

"The BlackBerry Bold is a breakthrough smartphone for both professional and personal use. We are very pleased to be working with A1 to provide Austrian customers with a superior mobile experience that further enhances the renowned functionality and usability of the industry leading BlackBerry solution," said RIM chief operating officer Don Morrison on the launch of the smartphone in Austria.

BlackBerry Bold home launch fails to create buzz

TORONTO : Canadian wireless giant Research In Motion (RIM) quietly launched its latest BlackBerry Bold smartphone in the home country on Thursday.

The BlackBerry Bold, which is considered to be RIM's response to the iPhone 3G launched here last month, didn't generate the euphoria that the Apple device created here last month.

Like the iPhone 3G, the Blackberry Bold is also supported by third-generation wireless networks.

Rogers, the country's biggest telecom service provider, will support the BlackBerry Bold service across Canada.

The new subscribers will have to sign a three-year contract with Rogers Wireless, with an initial payment of $399 which includes cost of the device.

``Rogers Wireless is proud to be first to offer Canadians the world's fastest BlackBerry smartphone on Canada's fastest mobile network,'' said John Boynton, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Rogers Wireless.

``The much awaited BlackBerry Bold smartphone is a 'must have' for connoisseurs of premium products and mobile workers who want to remain connected and productive no matter where their jobs may take them," he said.

After reports of disrupted services by the users of the iPhone 3G, which is also supported by Rogers Wireless, the BlackBerry makers have reportedly optimized the new smartphone for Rogers' 3G wireless data network.

The launch of the BlackBerry Bold in the Canadian market comes after RIM unveiled it in many European and South American markets.

The news smartphone features a newly designed, precision QWERTY keyboard, built-in GPS, enterprise-grade Wi-Fi and many multimedia capabilities. These include a two- megapixel camera with video recording and an advanced media player to play music, watch videos and view pictures.

Boasting a very high resolution display, the BlackBerry Bold smartphone also features a next-generation 624 MHz mobile processor.

Users can also edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents directly on the handset using the preloaded DataViz Documents to its Go software suite.

RIM the big winner in smartphone market: Gartner

HELSINKI: Blackberry maker RIM was the biggest winner in a slowing smartphone market in the second quarter, roughly doubling its market share from a year ago to 17.4 percent, research firm Gartner said on Monday.

The market was still dominated by Finland's Nokia Oyj , which sold 15.3 million phones with capabilities like e-mail and navigation, giving it a 47.5 percent share. But this was down from 50.8 percent a year ago as competition intensified in the consumer smartphone market.

"RIM continued to execute well at the consumer level, increasing its global market reach," Gartner analyst Roberta Cozza said in a statement.

Research In Motion Ltd (RIM) sold 5.6 million smartphones in April through June, up from 2.5 million a year ago, as it found new clients beyond its main business market.

"In the second half of the year, the company is expected to launch smartphones based on new (designs) ... which are necessary to keep pace with the competition at the consumer level," she said.

Gartner said Nokia needs to introduce more design variations among its N-series multimedia phones to stay ahead. The company has only tweaked its N-series lineup so far this year and many analysts expect it to lose more market share in smartphones in coming quarters.

Credit Suisse said it expects Nokia's smartphone market share to fall to 41.6 percent in 2009, hurting profit margins.

NEW COMPETITION

"Longer term, we maintain our concerns regarding smartphone share in the face of new competition from the likes of RIM, Apple and HTC (High Tech Computer)," analyst Kulbinder Garcha at Credit Suisse said in a research note.

Gartner said global smartphone sales growth almost halved from the first quarter to 15.7 percent.

"The current economic environment continues to negatively impact the market, limiting consumer spending and replacement purchases in general," Cozza said, adding growth should pick up again in July through September.

"Wider availability of new touch smartphone models together with the global introduction of the iPhone 3G will help sales of smartphones return to stronger growth in the third quarter of 2008," Cozza said.

Apple Inc's share of global smartphone sales fell to 2.8 percent from 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2008 as it sold down inventories of first-generation iPhones before the launch of the iPhone 3G.

High Tech Computer Corp (HTC) sales more than doubled from a year ago to 1.3 million phones, lifting the company to No. 3 position from seventh place the previous quarter.

In smartphone operating systems, Symbian lost market share as the Japanese market declined and Mitsubishi exited the market. Symbian had 57 percent of the market in the second quarter, compared with 66 percent in the same period last year.

RIM had 17.4 percent of the market and Microsoft's Windows Mobile market share stood at 12 percent in the quarter.

BlackBerry Bold Launched in India

Research In Motion (RIM) today introduced the BlackBerry Bold smartphone in India with Airtel, Vodafone and Reliance.

The BlackBerry Bold is the first BlackBerry smartphone to support tri-band HSDPA high-speed networks around the world. It integrates 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi and GPS, which can pinpoint the user's location and supports location-based applications and services. It comes with a half-VGA (480x320 resolution at 217 ppi) color LCD that is fused to the undersurface of the lens. The smartphone also comes with a media player for music, videos and photos and a 2 megapixel camera with video recording.

Managing music, pictures and video is made easy with the inclusion of Roxio Media Manager for BlackBerry as well as Roxio Photosuite 9 LE in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software. For users that manage their collection with iTunes, the new BlackBerry Media Sync application provides a simple way to sync iTunes digital music collections with the smartphone.

The BlackBerry Bold smartphone also comes with a newly enhanced, high performance browser. The trackball mimics a mouse, making it easy to navigate sites in "Page View" or "Column View" or to zoom in on specific parts of a web page, while various emulation settings allow users to choose between the full desktop-style HTML content and layout or the mobile version.

The BlackBerry Bold smartphone comes with a 624 MHz mobile processor, 128 MB Flash memory plus 1 GB on-board storage memory, and a microSD/SDHC memory card slot that is accessible from a side door. DataViz Documents to Go is also preloaded, enabling users to edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files directly on the smartphone.

The smartphone works with BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which enables advanced security and IT administration within IBM Lotus Domino, Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise environments, as well as BlackBerry Professional Software for small businesses.

It also works with BlackBerry Internet Service, which gives users access to up to 10 supported work or personal email accounts (including most popular ISP email accounts).

Priced at Rs. 34,990, the BlackBerry Bold will be available by the end of September 2008 at authorized channels nationally.

I read Blackberry Bold will be launched in Reliance as well.. But i am kinda confused whether it will be launching its CDMA or GSM version for reliance?

@ 34500 they are Demanding Taj Mahal for giving this Crap OS Phone. I think Iphone is Better and cheaper with so many Fantastic Software or Just wait for HTC Touch HD.

Blackberry Target Business Users and Charges too High Premium and they Forget Busines users also Requires High end Touch Screen Browser like iPhone or HTC Touch HD. Blackberry Browser is Very Very BAD None of Banking site work Perfectly. on iPhone all HDFC Bank Site including Payment Gateway works Properly.

you can also Configure IMAP of Google / Yahoo / and POP of MSN Hotmail.

Blackberry dont have Folder Sync. the Way iPhone do for IMAP CLients.

Don't understand the purpose of this phone at Rs 35K plus Rs 1500 every month for availing BlackBerry services (unlimited).

It looks ordinary compared to Nokia E71 which is half the price and has more capabilities.

Only fake executives without proper knowledge thinking that BB is the ultimate device would buy at this rate.

I have experience with:

Nokia N95 & Nokia E90

Blackberry Bold & Blackberry Curve

While Nokia phones beat the BB phones anytime in almost all fields, BB beats them hands down on email solution. The third party applications (or even the Nokia Email - Nokia's answer to BB) has still a long way to go to match BB Email delivery system - the beauty of which is highlighted not only while you are in your home circle but while you are roaming internationally.

If you need your business phone for Emails - I suggest got for BB, and if you need it for everything else but emails I suggest do not look further than a Nokia.
