Updated: Bharti's Dth Service Launched - Airtel Digital

Recommended Posts

Source: The Hindu Business Line

NEW DELHI: Bharti group is likely to soft launch its direct-to-home service in the first week of October. The company, according to industry sources, is hoping to get an FIPB approval before that. Market sources said the sales team has sounded out October 8 as the launch date.

A Bharti spokesperson said the company does not comment on market speculation, while adding "we have said we will launch our DTH service by this year". Government had earlier asked Bharti group to seek a separate FIPB approval within three months for it s upcoming DTH services.

"The DTH licensee Bharti Telemedia is ordered to seek separate FIPB approval within three months from the date of issue of this order," a directive issued by Information and Broadcasting Ministry on August 25 said.

The I&B order follows replies by the company to its earlier show-cause notice over alleged 'violation' of FDI and other guidelines. As per the existing guidelines, any foreign investment in cable and broadcasting company requires FIPB approval.

The bone of contention was Bharti Airtel, the group's mobile telephony arm holding 40 per cent stake in Bharti Telemedia, as well as having a cable operator's licence, owning over the permitted stake in the DTH arm.

"Bharti Airtel, which has a 40 per cent share in the DTH licensee company, is registered as a cable operator. The eligibility condition for DTH license provides that the licensee shall not allow broadcasting and/or cable network companies to collective h old or own more than 20 per cent of the total paid up equity in the DTH venture," the notice had said. - PTI

I somehow have a feeling that bharti wouldn't be able to pull off good DTH launch.. I have nothing to back up my statement, just based on my intuition.. Which is mostly correct.. lol

i would like to witness this war for one... i have 4 functional tvs at any given time at my place... so far i have tried dish tv and tata sky and comparing all costs, local cable wala still is the best bet with his digital stb with each tv... what rules in his favour is the availability of all channels and the extra cost per tv...

even after TRAI order nothing has been done in this regarding . . .

Press Trust of India

Telecom operator Bharti Airtel has made its debut in the television space with the launch of its direct to-home (DTH) satellite television service, which will offer over 175 channels across the country from October 9.

The service will be available to customers through 21,000 retail points including Airtel Relationship Centres in 62 cities.

"This is a right time for Airtel to enter the market.... the launch of Airtel digital TV is the culmination of our 'three screens' strategy, which is to be present across mobile phone, computer and TV screens. We are very clear at Airtel and will take over as a leader of the sector as soon as possible," Airtel chief executive officer and managing director Manoj Kohli said.

At present, there are five DTH players in the Indian market. There are 225 million households across the country and the penetration is only 3 per cent for DTH services.

"There is a huge potential in this market.... We believe that the Indian DTH segment offers immense growth potential going forward. With added benefits of Airtel's strong brand equity and wide distribution network, we are well placed to emerge as a leading player in the segment," he added.

Initially, the company had introduced three different packages for the North and Southern markets.

For the Northern market, the package starts from Rs 2,499 and for the South, the package would start from Rs 1,499.

Depending on the language and genre of channels, the monthly tariffs would range from Rs 125 to Rs 424, he informed.

Launch Rates are almost similar to BIG TV. Hope they give a good free time period.

I think purchasing a New DTH is becoming cheaper than monthly packs.

Bharti, R-ADAG rivalry spills over to DTH arena

NEW DELHI: After telecom, the corporate rivalry between R-ADAG and Bharti has

spilled over to the DTH arena. And early indications are that this will be a sizzling hot battle as well. Even before Bharti Airtel could launch its DTH operations, R-ADAG’s DTH company Big TV tried to steal the thunder from its launch marketing campaign by releasing advertisiments that closely resembled the latter’s teaser ads.

Mid last week, Bharti Airtel had released its teaser advertisements with the tag line, “see you at home soon” and “see you at home on October 9” without mentioning the name of the company or the product offering that was being advertised. Reliance ADAG’s DTH arm Big TV a few days ago launched its own ads with a similar ad and tag line which focused on its pay per view movie channels which it plans to introduce during the festive season.

Both the DTH players logos use red-and-white colours, which added further to the confusion. DTH blogs across the Net expressed utter confusion about who’s advertisements the teasers belonged to, as both looked very similar and used the same tag line.

When contacted, Big TV CEO Arun Kapoor refused to comment. Bharti Airtel CEO & JMD Manoj Kohli said, “We had decided to release the teaser advertisements during the Navratri period. Also, we had decided the media launch on the same day (Tuesday) as per our original plan. We will launch the main campaign on October 9 as indicated by the teaser ads. So everything is as per our plan. We believe we have a superior product. We have heard all about these imitations but nothing has deviated us from our plans.”

Bharti digital television’s ad agency JWT refused to comment. Madhukar Kamath, the MD & CEO of Mudra Communications who manages the Big TV account said: “Big TV is a superior product. We look for every single consumer connect opposrtunity to drive home our superior product quality, and we will continue to tap whatever similar opportunities are available in future as well.” In the past, cola majors Coca-Cola and Pepsi have indulged in advertising wars often with spoofs directed at each others’ tag-lines and story boards.
