Business Standard

Reliance Communications (RCom) has placed a Rs 300-crore bulk order with two Chinese equipment vendors, Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corporation, for around one million (10 lakh) plug-n-play USB modems.

This is believed to be one of the single largest order for USB modems, that can be used with laptops and desktops for accessing the Internet, from the country.

The Anil Ambani group company will receive the first consignment of nearly 100,000 modems, nearly 10 per cent of the total order, this week. On receipt of the modems, the company will roll these out into the market, sources close to the development told Business Standard.

RCom is planning to ramp up its wireless data operations and pursue an aggressive market share acquisition strategy, and these modems will also help the company establish its presence in the data market.

The company is pushing its Netconnect service (wireless data card) across both urban and rural areas in the country. Going forward, RCom expects its data business to contribute nearly 15-20 per cent of its overall revenues, they said.

The order with Huawei is for USB modems weighing not more than 50 gms and with a Micro Secure Digital Memory card, while the one with ZTE is for modems weighing around 40 gms. Technical specifications for both the companies are much similar.

When contacted RCom spokesperson declined to comment on the development.

Definitely for the EVDO service!

With the pricing of EVDO as high as it is now, RCOM will take about 25 years to sell that many modems.

What is the price of EVDO modem?

If the above site gives correct tarrif, then i think they are quite resonably priced, for high speed net connection

@499 Unlimited Night

** Unlimited Night Add-on pack cannot be used as a standalone pack.

So the minimum you have to pay for night unlimited will be Rs.798/-

You guys are missing the point.

"Unlimited" means a limit of 10GB only. Once you download more than 10GB, you will have to pay Rs. 2 per MB for download.

So, if you download 20GB even during night in a month, you will get a bill of about Rs. 21000 plus service tax.

this works out to be Rs300 per device (300core/10lacs).

and reliance is selling it for Rs3500 :Ohhhh:

or might be this is for 1x

because they are also targeting rural wireless internet mkt to break BSNL's monopoly

Read the fine print at the bottom again because as always devil is in the details:

Unlimited usage plan will have a fair usage policy of 10GB/month

I still believe that night unlimited also has a limit of 10GB/month.

Now they again revised price to Rs.3500...

Reliance Contact Centre is really stupid.

Sir, Price has been slashed to Rs.3500.

What are they doing????

Playing games...
