Which Indian Metro Has The Highest Teledensity

Recommended Posts

http://www.business-standard.com/india/new...chennai/355149/

The city is far ahead of the other metros.

Chennai, often an afterthought in the list of metropolitan cities, has emerged at the top in a study of mobile phone penetration by the Cellular Operators Association of India, or COAI.

The number of mobile phone subscribers as a percentage of the city’s population is the highest here, at 111 per cent, which means a fair number has more than one mobile phone.

Mumbai is a distant number two with 90 per cent, followed by Delhi at 83 per cent. The fourth metro, Kolkata, is way behind with 67 per cent.

The four metros account for 16 per cent of the country’s mobile subscriber base, but 25 per cent of the total revenue. That means their residents use their phones more and pay fatter bills than subscribers elsewhere in the country. This is the user profile that rings a bell for mobile phone marketers.

The data will also provide the handful of service providers that are joining the fray in several cities more food for thought.

The data is based on overall mobile subscriber figure for February and includes both GSM as well as CDMA users.

Operators say that in Bangalore (separate data on subscriber numbers is not available for the city as it is part of the Karnataka circle) would be around 80 per cent.

“Chennai had started as a very conservative city, with consumers reluctant to have a mobile. But it has changed dramatically in the last few years, which is reflected in the fact that there are a lot of people who have more than one mobile phone,” says T V Ramachandran, COAI’s secretary-general. He adds that the churn, the migration of subscribers from one service provider to another, has been even.

Telecom companies say that the numbers reflect new challenges, especially for the new operators that are launching services in these cities. They have only two choices, either to wean away customers from other operators or ensure that consumers get hooked on to a second phone.

Says a senior executive of a leading telecom company: “New operators face a tough challenge to get new consumers, especially with three to four new players coming in these cities. The problem has become bigger because the churn rate in the country is actually coming down or is stable (it is at 3.4 per cent currently).”

Add to that rock-bottom tariffs and there is very little scope left.

For incumbents, too, there are new challenges-how to push up average revenue per user which has been falling in the metros. Because with the market already saturated the best way to increase revenue is to ensure that customers spend more.

4.69L new cellphone users in city this year

CHENNAI: Job losses, pay cuts and the scare over economic meltdown have failed to adversely impact the ever expanding network base of cellular telecom service providers in the city. While during March the country had witnessed the highest ever GSM subscriber additions at 10.8 million, in Chennai alone more than 4.69 lakh residents have taken a new mobile phone service connection in the first quarter of this year.

Statistics on subscriber base released by the Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI) reveal that while at the beginning of this year only 68,80,935 mobile phone service connections were active in Chennai, the figure had increased to 73,50,574 as on March 31.

"As many as 4,69,639 new mobile phone service connections were taken during March alone. Of this, Aircel recorded the highest growth by providing 1,92,854 connections to subscribers in March. Airtel followed a close second with 1,26,165 additions in the number of subscribers followed by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) which added 76,433 customers and Vodafone Essar which attracted 74,187 new subscribers last month," a COAI spokesperson said.

In fact, the growth in the number of cellular phone subscribers in the city is steadily increasing month on month. "While in January over 1.15 lakh new subscribers were added, during February the four cellular phone service providers in the Metro netted an additional 1.62 lakh subscribers. Last month, they cumulatively provided more than 1.92 lakh additional service connections," he said.

Aircel is in fact the largest cellular phone operator in Chennai with 25,34,480 subscribers in Chennai. Airtel is second in the list with 21,77,600 subscribers followed by Vodafone Essar with 15,62,454 customers. BSNL is placed fourth with 10,76,040 subscribers in its kitty.

According to T V Ramachandran, director general, COAI, during March we had the cellular phone service providers in India had the "highest ever subscriber additions at 10.8 million (excluding Reliance subscribers). This is the highest ever subscriber additions since the inception of GSM service in India. With this, the cumulative all India GSM subscriber base has now grown to 288.3 million in March (excluding Reliance), up from 277.5 million in February."

Among the Metropolitan cities, Mumbai has the highest number of mobile phone subscribers. The business capital of the country has 1,15,98,443 cellular phone subscribers. In Delhi, as many as 1,08,24,006 persons own a cellular phone connection. Fourth in the list is Kolkata where only 68,15,603 residents have access to mobile phones.

TN gears up for mobile turf war

Times of India

18 Jun 2009, 0142 hrs IST

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has always been a very high penetration market for mobile companies in the country. Already, Chennai has the highest teledensity at 111% (111 mobile phone connections per 100 people) in the country and the state is set for another round of turf war among mobile companies with two more operators launching services in the next one month.

Tata Docomo, a joint venture between CDMA major Tata Indicom and NTT Docomo of Japan, will launch its GSM services in the state by June-end, while Idea Cellular, an Aditya Birla company with services in 17 of the 28 circles, is all set for a commercial launch in the southern metropolis. The state already has seven service providers, including BSNL.

More over, Reliance Communications, which rolled out its GSM services in Tamil Nadu in April with a soft launch, will soon start full-fledged services across the state.

With mobile number portability (MNP) also set to roll out in Chennai from September, the focus will now shift from pricing to quality of service. MNP, a facility where a subscriber can choose his service provider without changing his number, will compel operators to ensure quality of service, a marketing official with an existing player said.

"We have services across 17 circles in India and have over 45 million subscribers. Of this, 25% subscribers are from our operations in the three southern states -- Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Tamil Nadu is the important piece to be filled up in the southern market," Rajat Mukarji, chief corporate affairs officer, Idea Cellular, told The Times of India.

Tamil Nadu with its high penetration rate is an important market for telecom companies. According to recent statistics released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the state had a total subscriber base of 28,601,906 mobile customers at the end of April 2009 compared to 27,778,512 in March 2009 (3% growth month-on-month).

Interestingly, Sistema Shyam Teleservices Limited (SSTL), a joint venture between Sistema of Russia and Shyam Group of India, which rolled out its telecom brand MTS' in Tamil Nadu recently, has clocked 55,000 subscribers within a month. "We have got 6% market share of new subscribers in a month. There is still a huge market of customers looking for good value, quality network and services," Srinivasa Rao, CEO (TN & Kerala), MTS, said.
