MUMBAI: Electronics and consumer durable major Videocon, which recently forayed into the mobile handset market, plans to launch 15 new models over the next two months pan-India.

"We are very new in this segment and aim to be among the top three players by achieving a double-digit market share this year. We would launch 15 more models in the next two months," Videocon Mobile Phones Division's Chief Operating Officer Rahul Goel said in Mumbai.

Presently, Videocon has 12 mobile phone models in the market. Videocon also has tied-up with Planet M retail outlets for the sale of its products.

Videocon has priced its mobile phones from Rs 1,600 to Rs 18,500.

Goel said India has over 400 million mobile phone subscribers, with 10 million new users being added every month, which offers immense potential to the players.

The company targets to scale up its handset sales by introducing models and establishing strong relationships with channel partners and operators, he said.

The 20,000-crore company is a market leader in TV, refrigerator and washing machine space and has a significant presence internationally.

It sells appliances to markets in Europe, West Asia, Latin America, Nigeria and Indonesia.

Every one have own views, but they are chines under new cloths.

Companies like nokia, samsung, LG, HTC make handset with quality material.

Can you tell me one thing, why all these companies sell mobile at half rate compare to big companies?
They dont have their own unit for manufacturing, they dont have technology with them,
they only know to paste their logo on chines phone.

i doubt whether this will happen as the phone assemblies (as well as most of the electronic goods) are generally outsourced to some contract manufacturing companies (to reduce the cost). some are good & some are so so. There are few established players in india which are used by companies like LG,motorolla etc. Most of these companies are available in China & hence we see lot of companies not just from India but from other places outsourcing it to china.

I totally agree with you nagaraj,

But outsourcing is different, and taking ready made from 3rd party and putting company logo on it is different.
Company outsource the jobs on their own conditions, so quality can be maintained.

but while purchasing from 3rd party company have to compromise their quality, they have to buy which is already available in market.

Videocon plans pan India presence by Feb

Bangalore Leading conglomerate Videocon, which has forayed into mobile handset space, has said that it plans to achieve a pan-India presence by end of February and roll out 15 more models of handsets in two months in addition to exploring the option of coming out with 3-G handsets.
"We will be going beyond soft launches and will aim at having a pan-India presence. We will expand our footprint this month and fill in the balance by end of next month and have pan-India presence by end of February", Rahul Goel, COO,

Videocon Mobile Phones, said in the wake of the launch of the company's mobile handsets in Karnataka.

"Videocon has 12 models currently; we are not in the black and white space. We understand there is a huge requirement for dual SIM phones and we are looking at developing more phones in that region", he said, adding, "we are looking at launching 15 more models in the next two months".

On whether 3-G phone was on the company's roadmap, he said, "We are positioning Videocon in the high end space as well and will be coming up with high end QWERTY phones and phones with 3-G capability".

On the time frame for coming out with the 3-G model, he said, currently, it was not possible to ascribe any specific time frame but once the private sector gets access to the 3-G spectrum, it would be a matter of a month before the product would be rolled out, he said.

On Videocon's entry into the mobile handset space, Rahul said, "there is a huge potential in the market and a large base of consumers are untouched throughout the country".

"Other than urban, semi urban, the rural market is expanding rapidly and I think it is the right time to enter the market and we are doing it after a lot of research", he said.

"There are 10-12 million mobile phones being purchased every month. There is no proper brand in the market addressing the requirements of the segment. Entering the mobile space is a natural extension for us, since we are already in consumer durable space", Rahul said.

"New operators have launched their cell phones, and in terms of numbers, we already have more than 100 million subscribers and it is getting bigger and better day by day.

Replacement and advancement of cell phone is also a huge pie of the total", said the COO.

On the contribution of the mobile segment to the overall turnover of the company, he said, "We will have a significant double digit share by end of next fiscal".

"Our benchmark is to be in line with consumer requirement and to be one of the top three players by 2011", he said.

"A leadership position in two years we think is doable", he said, adding, "we have a strong foundation and infrastructure, strong customer service, distribution product development. We have invested in the right pillars to enable us to be leaders in the space", he said.

"We want to be a one stop-shop for the customer whoever wants to by a cellphone of any range". The company would shortly be airing its television commercial. "We do not have a brand ambassador now, but we shall use a celebrity eventually", he said.

Instead of wasting their money for getting this prize for their worthless products, they should launch their GSM services as promised as soon as possible... Else if they keep-on giving new launch dates, they will be nominated for the Liar of the year 2010 award...
