Notion Ink’s Adam

Android Based !!

1) NVIDIA Next Generation Tegra: Two ARM Cortex A9 cores (a world first) that promise an unimpeded browsing and media experience.

2) PixelQi screen: It is easy on the eyes in bright sunlight and bright office lights. And it could potentially increase battery life between charges by a factor of five. When combined with the dramatic power savings that the Tegra chip can enable, this could be a game changer.

3) 3.2 MP Swivel Auto Focus Camera: A Notion Ink patented design, this could lead to interesting cases of recording your meetings, lectures in High definition.

4) At 12.6 mm and ~650 gms, this is one of the lightest and thinnest tablets around. Talk about size 0 for tablets.

5) App store: With potentially plans for upto $1 million app developer contest, you can expect the app market to provide new and exciting applications that make full use of the Tegra 2’s Geforce level graphics.

6) Flash: Acceleration support for Flash 10.1 means a never before seen experience for web content on mobile devices. (e.g. youtube and vimeo HD videos.) And those giving a presentation using Prezi will be able to render it at full quality on the Adam.

7) Open: Unlike the Apple iPad, this is not a closed system. In the future, this device should also be able to run Google’s Chromium OS or Ubuntu. An Nvidia exec has confirmed that they are working on a Linux build that will run on the Tegra.

8 ) Support for Multi-touch: Right now, the testing devices are running on Android 2.1. This means that the final release should be technically able to support multi-touch features (minus the Apple-owned pinch zoom) on all if not all apps.

9) Voice Commands: It has voice command support, like the Droid and NexusOne.

10) Expansion slots: It supports 3 USB , an HDMI port and an expandable SD card slot. Means docking to your HDTV and USB keyboard would be a breeze.

Wow... I am so happy to have Indians do something like this and rub shoulders with Global Giants like Apple...

Why would you need a killer or call it a killer for a device that is yet to prove its success.

Notion Ink Adam clears FCC, begins shipping 'around Wednesday'

http://www.engadget....ound-wednesday/

We don't see it in the FCC database yet but Notion Ink's charming Rohan Shravan just penned a post on the company's blog with news that Adam has official clearance from the US government. That's right, after several delays the tiny startup will finally condense its occassionally vapory molecules into a solid slab of shipping tablet starting "around Wednesday" after the hardware receives its FCC tattoo. A tablet good enough to earn a Best of CES 2011 honorable mention at an event absolutely flooded with tablets from a who's who of consumer electronics companies. While our first impressions of the production unit were positive, we're holding off on making a final judgement until we've had the chance to perform a full review. Having said that, Adam's final NI3421A01 product code is so nerdy -- 3421 are consecutive numbers in the Fibonacci series -- that we're almost tempted to place an order ourselves. Almost.

Thanks for the link Dhiraj ji, read many posts on the WP blog of NI. Seems they have a good product but cannot help but feel commercial success will be limited.

Operational reasons:

1. lack of PR and an effective shopping/delivery model. They have not tied up with PayPal/Amazon etc. and were taking prebooking on CCAvenue from Visa cardholders only. Mastercard holders could not place orders and seems many people trying to preorder failed due to site down/US banks rejecting as fraud. Preorder E-Mail was sent to people based on who commented earliest on their wordpress blog. Weird.

2. they did not have FCC clearance for US sale. Have got now. Preorders have been massively delayed.

3. selling at same price all over the world means high shipping charges for US/Europe customers, and high customs for India customers.

4. startup so does not have big finances. Rumors of tieup with MDA but not confirmed.

Technical reasons:

1. have invested 1 year which is whopping delay in just developing their custom OS called Eden. Is based on 2.2 close to 2.3 but has many advanced features, but because of so much customization they lost long time which has allowed iPad to rule. The hardware for this exact tablet was shown 1 year back at CES, they missed massive opportunity to launch then, instead focused on custom OS/UI.

2. Honeycomb has been shown in CES and this will not get 3.0 till Google releases source, as they have no tieup with Google unlike Motorola for Xoom.

3. no android market, they are developing separate market called Genesis. People are wary why market is not there, reason is Android does not support market for tablets till 3.0. But they are not clearly addressing the customer's concerns through PR.

4. too many variants, no clear details of pricing, pricing does not include S&H, no clear website offering information/specifications/videos. It is all geeky and for tech enthusiasts at the moment, updates are being given via a wordpress blog, which is not very formal and effective way.

5. seen interview with CEO and it seems he is a geek with no clear business blueprint. NI did not have any booth at CES or tieup with partners like AMD to give demo at CES.

Notion Ink Adam to get Gingerbread update soon, and unofficial Honeycomb ROM

Notion Ink has officially announced an Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Adam, complete with the Eden UI. No release date has been given yet however. While the Gingerbread update will bring numerous improvements, fixes and additions to the current interface, from better multitasking, the ability to overclock the Tegra processor, a new native audio-video player with equalizer support, and improved data base support.

In the meanwhile however, the obvious question is when Honeycomb support is coming. The move to the Gingerbread OS will bring the kernel closer to Honeycomb than before, allowing for a simple transition to Honeycomb complete with Eden UI.

While an official update is still a long way off, with Notion Ink not yet given access to the Android 3.0 source code, it seems a few developers are helping create a port for the Adam. While things might not be perfect yet, evinced by the work in progress video, it seems full-fledged support is not too far off, though it maybe a while new Notion Ink Adam’s will ship with Honeycomb on board.

In other news, a Kindle app has been announced for the Adam, which will come bundled with future shipments.
