Nokia Comes Up With A Self-Charging Handset

Nokia has come up with a cellphone that can charge its own battery by accumulating energy from the owner's motion.

The self-charging handset was predicted to work with heavier components, such as the radio transmitter circuit and battery. The set is supported on a strong frame.

The frame has a rail mechanism which allows the set to shift up and down or side to side.

As per the information, each rail contains strips of piezoelectric crystals at its end to provide a way to generate a current when compressed by the frame such that motion or by the movement of the phone. Then, a capacitor is there to store the charge to run the handset.

Seems this will be incorporated to all phones and it will be a boon for all.There won't be any need to plug the phones to a socket for hours.But it will take time to perfect th his new technology.

I belive this is better idea. Like automatic watch. SSolar cells has limitation per available area. In this case limitation is by weight not by area.

good idea dude... better to have mutiple technology to charge the phone at the same time, electric charger, solar, etc......

Nokia Applies for Self Charging Phone Patent

These devices will not need a power socket to charge

In what seems to be a first of its kind, Nokia has applied for a patent for a technology that would allow future cellphones to charge themselves up - without the need for a power socket.

Ever since mobile phones shed off their image as a basic communications device to become multimedia powerhouses, battery life has been a cause of concern. As the processing power and features grow exponentially, the rate of growth of battery technology to charge these power hungry devices is almost at a standstill. It then becomes imperative that we look for alternate sources to power our phones rather than just depending on a power adapter. This is what Nokia has done.

The concept of this new device involves the use of heavy components inside the phone being supported on a sturdy frame. The frame will be able to move along two sets of rails, giving it the ability travel up and down (or side by side). These rails have strips of piezoelectric crystals at each end. These will generate electricity to charge the device whenever they are compressed using a capacitor that will briefly store the generated electricity and use that to charge the battery. This also means that the natural movement of the phones during travel and the times when they are inside our pockets, these piezoelectric crystals could be at work - slowly charging our phones.

This is just at the conceptual stage and there is no word if this design and concept will ever make it to a mainstream production Nokia.

its like seiko kinetic for watches

but its unlikely to generate enough power for a mobile

its still better than nothing when your phone is almost dead

riding on buses / autos should help the recharging more than walking...

finally some postive use for mumbai potholes!

Assuming that phone usage is moderate to light, phone require very little power. Say 1000 mA battery last for 2 days (say 50 hours) means it requires only 20 mAH power, which is very little probably can be managed by movements of phone. Even if not, it may increase total life of battery between two recharges.
