Reliance Infocomm Photos !

This is the Control Room of Reliance Infocomm, called Barco Control Rooms, which is the undisputed market leader in control rooms, provides a 225m² total display solution for Reliance Infocomm at Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City (DAKC), Navi Mumbai. Reliance Infocomm is a telecom industry giant and the first company in the world to roll out such a large geographical network using only one National Network Operations Center (NNOC).The significance of a single NNOC is that all services, including billing, databases and customer relations, can be managed centrally. This approach substantially reduces the cost of network management. Reliance Infocomm launched its mobility services in 104 cities on December 28, 2002, when it kicked off operations. Reliance will soon reach 709 cities.

In Reliance’s selection process for a control room provider, crucial issues like control room design and functionality of modern NNOC’s were evaluated. Barco was selected thanks to its market leadership position in projection technology and proven expertise in display wall control systems. With telecom reference sites all over the world, Barco was able to clearly illustrate its extensive project, system and user experience (Man/Wall Interface). Other factors that undoubtedly reinforced Barco’s predominance included Barco’s comprehensive iCare program monitoring the status of its installations worldwide as well as Barco’s customer services, ranging from 24/7 telephone support to on-site training & support.

In the main NNOC, Barco installed a dual set-up on the left and right hand side of the center, with each side having three display sections each consisting of 67” DLPÔ projection displays in respectively 6x4, 8x4 and 6x4 configurations. The total configuration comprises 160 modules, equaling nearly 126,000,000 pixels in a single control room, and a total screen surface of almost 225 m². The projection engines/controlware link was implemented in a fully digital way. Barco also equipped additional rooms totaling over 36m². Next to the main NNOC in Mumbai, Barco implemented a Situation Room (67” modules in a 3x2 configuration) and a Security Control Room (67” modules in a 5x2 configuration) and a back-up NNOC (67” modules in a 5x2 configuration) in Hyderabad. All these control rooms were implemented at the same time, making this Barco’s biggest single project implementation.

In a slightly curved configuration, the display spans almost the entire length of the NNOC’s two opposing walls. Barco’s 225m² total display solution integrates projection technology, controlware and wall management software. Barco enables the dynamic visualization of network monitoring applications and web-based supervision of the network’s routers and switchers, as well as the simultaneous display of 4 video and 2 RGB sources per display section. Barco’s screen-scraping software allows the content of the operators’ PCs to be replicated on the display walls. The controlware was selected, among other reasons, because of its upgradeability, offering Reliance the most future-proof front-end available.

The project approach was unique in that the whole project, from concept to engineering, was executed in only 4 months. REAL, the Reliance EPCO Wing (Engineering Procurement Construction Operation) offered strong implementation capabilities and unique execution skills in all areas whereas Barco provided full support in engineering, installation and commissioning activities. REAL personnel participated actively with dedicated teams to achieve excellent Engineering & Construction Standards.

The first floor of the NNOC also features a visitor’s area for corporate presentations to high profile government and corporate visitors from India and abroad. A bridge is suspended from the ceiling of the NNOC allowing visitors to pass through the NNOC without disturbing the day-to-day operations.

After the successful implementation of this worldclass project, Reliance is now planning to further extend the centralised control room concept to its other business divisions.

The Reliance Network: A bird's eye view

Shilpi Das

265x185reliancenetwork.jpg

Reliance Infocomm has made adequate technological provisions to ensure uninterrupted network service to cope with the ever increasing number of users. The network management and the related equipment at Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City (DAKC), Mumbai, from where the All India network of Reliance India Mobile (RIM) is monitored, projects that.

The backbone of the RIM network is the optical fibres network that spans a total distance of 95,000 km across the country. These fibres help to carry voice and data traffic across the network. Built using high capacity G655 fibre optic cables, they can manage a total bandwidth of 9,200 Gbps. Even so, Reliance has plans to multiply the bandwidth by several times in the not-so-far future.

Situated at various locations, are several Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), which receive and transmit mobile signals to and from Reliance IndiaMobile handsets. There are 3600 such BTS towers across the country, whose concentration varies with the density of users. A call made from a Reliance IndiaMobile handset to another Reliance IndiaMobile handset at any other location, is transferred through these BTS towers on Reliance IndiaMobile's "transport" network till it is transferred to the receiver.

However, a single BTS tower can only handle a specific number of calls. So highly populated cities like Mumbai have more BTS towers than any thinly populated ones. According to Reliance, the CDMA 1X technology used by them, helps them handle 5 to 6 times more customers per tower than a conventional BTS tower used by any GSM operator.

Every region of the country which has Reliance network, is linked through a 'Ring Architecture' which promises to provide security and route the calls/data through a different route if any part of optical fiber is broken.

In order to supply uninterrupted service of network, special measures are taken in the National Network Operations Centre (NNOC) in DAKC, which monitors the All India Reliance network on a 24x7 basis. Set up in an area of 110,000 sq. ft., it is designed to ensure provision for new connection, detect network faults and degradations conclusively ensuring several measures of remedy. The large video walls around the hall allow experts to view and locate the region of the fault. The physical division of the monitors correspond to several operational groups like voice information, data information, and actual physical infrastructure.

According to Reliance, once a fault occurs and is detected in NNOC, it gets resolved within the next four hours. Also, in case of a cable rupture or network faults anywhere around the country, the fault can be pinpointed with an accuracy of 15 meters.

Besides this, NNOC also has a Situation Room, which is equipped to handle any crisis or outage in the network. For example if there is a threat for interrupted network service due to severe weather, then this Situation Room comes into action. Besides this there is an NNOC in Hyderabad which provides backup service if there is a glitch in DAKC.

Recently, Reliance has been named as the 'Most Promising Service Provider' of Asia Pacific region and awarded by Frost & Sullivan. Witnessing the whole network management of Reliance at DAKC, the Technology and the infrastructure, such accolades don’t come as a surprise.

I guess its the National Network Operations Center (NNOC) at DAKC. Seemingly, all of RIC's network is managed from this central facility.

Also, RIC was inaugrated from this very place, when Pramod Mahajan had called up A. B. Vajpayee on December 28, 2002.
