Trip To Japan -- Courtesy Tata Docomo

Recommended Posts

Here's a blog written by one of the winners who had a chance to visit Tokoyo by winning TATA Docomo 3G contest.

As those of you who follow me on Twitter might know, last week, I had the immense pleasure of visiting Tokyo.

A two day trip by Tata Docomo, we were invited to not only check out the land that only has the latest technology in the world, but is also the homebase of NTT Docomo. As you might already know, Tata Docomo is Indias fourth largest operator in terms of wireless subscribers (about 32.82 million users at the end of June 2010), after Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications and Vodafone. They became quite popular with the introduction of the charge-per-second pulse, and on November 5th 2010, became the first private sector telecom company to launch 3G services in India.

The Network provider is a joint venture between Indias Tata Group, and Japanese telecom giant NTT Docomo, who hold 26% stake in the company. NTT Docomo, is the predominant mobile phone operator in Japan. Heck, they are so large, that even the name is officially an abbreviation of the phrase, do communications over the mobile network. Symbian Fans might note that they are also a founding member of the Symbian Foundation.

Ive always wanted to visit Japan. Ever since I saw my first Gundam episode, and found out that Sega (and hence Sonic the Hedgehog) was based out of the island. Japan is widely known, as the geeks dream country, and hence, being a very proud fellow-geek, I was overjoyed to check out the land of the rising sun.

How come Tata Docomo with 32.82 million users gets to be the 4th largest operator?? This would have been true if he had said Tata teleservices i.e included the CDMA subscribers :) But in this case Idea with 68 million users and Aircel with some 41 million subscribers at the end of June '10 should be crowned 4th and 5th right? ;)

Yes, he should have told TataTele as fourth largest operator.. As TataTele includes TataIndicom, VirginCDMA, VirginGSM, T24, TataDocomo, Walky, even WirelineUsers also...

I feel you're totally confused with TATA's telecom operation. There are 2 companies in wireless segment viz TTSL and TTML. In both these companies NTT Docomo, Japan owns some percentage of shares (I think it's 26%). Both companies operate 2 brand names viz TATA indicom and TATA docomo. Indeed they(TTSL&TTML put together) are the 4th largest operator if we just include wireless subscribers alone. If we include wireline subscribers also then BSNL will overtake TATA.

The original post mentions it as TATA DOCOMO being the 4th largest operator with a mere share of 38 million users. This can be correctly rephrased as TTSL plus TTML is the 4th.............. right? :)
