Social Responsibility

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am creating this topic to spread awareness of various social movements, NGOs etc. where we can participate and contribute towards eradicating social issues. Do spend few minutes reading this and contribute your knowledge, the more we are aware the more we can help the downtrodden in society.

I will start off by describing Nanhi Kali, a movement which I am associated with and want others to know.

Government of India statistics reveal that only three out of ten girls who enter Std. I complete Std. X. At primary school level, over 45% of girls dropout of school and this increases to over 73% by the time the child has reached Std. X. Research has shown that reasons for this dropout may be as minor as the girl child not being able to afford a dress/uniform to go to school and could include more complex factors like girls taking on the responsibility of household chores at a very young age as a result of gender stereotyping.

What is Nanhi Kali?

Project Nanhi Kali was initiated in 1996 by the K C Mahindra Education Trust (KCMET) with the aim of providing primary education to underprivileged girl children in India. Anand Mahindra, the founder of Nanhi Kali, believed that educated women form the foundation of a modern secular society and felt that there was a strong correlation between the existing societal ills in India such as spiralling population rate, dowry deaths, caste system etc and no education of the girl child. He believed that empowering the girl child with education would result in huge benefits for the nation in the long term.

Impact

1. Project Nanhi Kali currently supports the education of over 57,000 underprivileged girl children from poor urban, remote rural, tribal and conflict afflicted communities across 7 states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and New Delhi.

2. The project has witnessed a significant increase in both enrolment of girls and attendance of girls in schools.

3. Drop out rates of girls have been curtailed to less than 10% within the programme compared to national level figures of 30% at Primary level and 70% at the Secondary School level.

4. Further assessments done by a third party have reported an increase in learning outcomes ranging from 40% improvement in tribal Chhattisgarh to 78% in Mumbai slums within a period of a year.

What can we do?

Project Nanhi Kali is a participatory project where any individual or corporate can sponsor the education of a disadvantaged girl child for only Rs. 2400 a year (for a girl studying in Std. 1 - 7) or Rs. 3600 a year (for a girl studying in Std 8-10).

This comes out to be around Rs. 7 (for a girl studying in Std. 1 - 7) or Rs. 10 (for a girl studying in Std 8-10) a day. Plus the donation is tax exempted.

What does the Nanhi Kali donor receive?

Each Nanhi Kali donor receives a detailed profile of the girl they sponsor along with her photograph and two progress reports to keep them updated of how she is faring in both academic as well as extra curricular activities.

Visit http://www.nanhikali.org/ and decide for yourself. And this might just be the best Rs. 10 you spend per day.

Thanks for reading.

Mods I have written this personally as thought of sharing this with forum and in no way been influenced by Nanhi Kali to promote their services. If this breaks any of the forum rules then please do delete. I could not find such topic if any exists then please merge.

Nice Thought ... +1

Have some suggestion for enhancing & widening the subject...

Can this Topic be renamed "What's Good & Positive That Is Happenning In India" & Topic Description "Share Things/Initiatives Which Give HOPE For A Better Tomorrow & Increase Awareness"

And one can share here in addition to what one is doing socially ( Many take this as a Personal Thing & May Not Share in Public..)...

Information About NGO's, Organisations, Initiatives active in India in various spheres of Life like Civil Rights, Education, Citizen Awareness, Consumer Movement, Anti Corruption, Individual Development, Child & Woman Welfare...

Basically Anything which is happenning without the Government Intervention where the normal citizen of this country (A Company/Organisation is also a Citizen For This Purpose..) is doing something POSITIVE and REST of US should know about it and may like to PARTICIPATE in it...

Let's Shoot Cynicism, Past Failures, Critical Appraisal, Why This Can't Happen and Have Some POSITIVE Energy Spreading... Atleast that Won't Do Any Harm AT ALL..

And Those Who Believe & Are OPTIMIST can have A Single Source of Good Information To Participate in One's Own Area of Liking..

Very well put I totally agree. The point of this topic is to channelize positive thoughts and energy, empower with knowledge and contribute towards social upliftment. Many people here must be doing their bits towards social causes and there is a tendency not to make it public because often people mistake it for bragging, but we can discuss such things freely here because everyone is supportive and with such huge and vibrant community like this forum, if we all come together and share our ways of improving other people's lives, we can make positive difference.

Cannot edit post title so mods kindly update as appropriate.

Chandan I have used that site and while it is for a worthy cause, there was (not sure if still is) a trojan on the homepage. Similar is www.freerice.com where one has to take quiz to donate rice grains.

Aviva Street to School: the charity partnership programme that aims to help 500,000 street children back into education

Aviva Street to School is the insurance group’s international charity partnership programme that aims to help 500,000 street children back into education and training by 2015.

In 2010 Street to School projects helped over 128,000 children and Aviva employees worldwide dedicated over 25,000 hours of volunteering for our charity partners.

Around the world, Aviva Street to School is working with organisations like Save the Children, Railway Children, CRY, Focus Ireland as well as SHCEK in Turkey and the China Youth Federation, to support children living on the streets now and to prevent at-risk children from ending up this way.

As well as education and training projects, Street to School supports initiatives to raise awareness of the issues facing runaways with young people, as well as health and wellbeing programmes for street children and their families. Our ambition is to help as many street children as we can who are on the streets, or at risk of falling into a life on the streets.

Aviva wants to act as a catalyst for change so that street children have the chance to fulfil their potential in life - just as all children should.
