I don't understand what's the big deal with siri?

its not a new concept, not even revolutionary.

Speech to text is like there from years, all siri is doing is finding the key words, make sense of it by using markers (I guess)

and all you can do is set some reminders get weather and nearby restaurants, or just search.

Its like cutting a step between translating speech to text and hitting search, siri will hit the search button for you, with a voice over of course

engadget and others projecting it as "game changer" well I fail to find it as one

Just to keep the records straight - Fragmentation is becoming less of a issue with android.

Now 38.7 % of the devices runs on 2.3.x Gingerbread and 2.2 Froyo on 45.3%.

And fragmentation exists in iOS too.

iPohne users face Siri outage and Apple is unable to provide details.

Source

Siri goes down for iPhone 4S owners across the country

Siri, Apple’s new voice assistant feature for the iPhone 4S, is apparently suffering from an outage, which has rendered it useless for many iPhone owners. The outage began at around 11 am PST today.

Siri isn’t just a simple piece of voice control software. To function properly, Siri must communicate with one of Apple’s servers for additional information. For example, when you ask Siri what the weather is like in Nashville, Tenn., it plays an elaborate game of telephone with a main database that has the information, and then updates you with the answer.

This is precisely the reason jailbreaking the

iPhone 4 and the iPad to run Siri is so difficult.

We’re contacting Apple for additional information and will update you with what we find out. In the meantime, feel free to let us know if you’re experiencing the Siri outage by leaving a comment below.

Update: We called Apple’s customer service number to find out more information. Despite toggling off the Wi-Fi and restarting the phone as they suggested, I was unable to get Siri to connect (not that I’m surprised). The Apple Care supervisor I spoke with said it’s entirely possible that it’s a network outage.

Update 2:40pm Pacific: Siri is still offline, according to our tests, and numerous other users are also reporting outages. So far, Apple has not issued an official statement, and it has not responded to our requests for comment.

Update 4:04pm Pacific: Siri functionality has been restored for some iPhone 4S users — including myself. At this point we still don’t know what was causing the outage, or how widespread it was, and Apple still hasn’t responded to our requests for comment.

Siri did respond, however. I asked her, “Siri, where you been all day?” Her response? A number of day spas and hair salons (

Thanks to Armen over at

iSmashphone for tipping us off, and to VentureBeat’s Heather Kelly for the suggestion about asking Siri where she’s been.

Complete Siri Experience Only Possible On The iPhone 4S Because of A Tweaked Proximity Sensor

Source

There is one small tweak in the building of the iPhone 4S, though, that might be the culprit why Siri would only work the way it is supposed to on Apple's latest handset. It is... hold on... the proximity sensor. iFixit, when taking the phone apart, noticed that little infrared sensor box was different that what we had before.

That in itself is not the reason for Siri's performance, but a software change is seemingly forcing it to always light up when the screen is turned on, instead of only when a call is coming, as in other handsets.

The sensor is used to measure the distance to your face when the screen is on, and thus determine whether to get Siri ready and waiting for your every word, says iFixit: "The 4S, however, has a neurotic tendency of always wondering how close your face is. As long as the screen is activated, that IR sensor will be shining brightly".

Here is a video from iFixit below, explaining the iPhone 4S proximity sensor deal with Siri.

Here's the argument Siri fails to resolve.. Now you should really watch this..

spoof named "Don't drag her into this."

We won’t spoil the fun with any other details, though, just check out the video below yourself, but the faint of heart geeks should be warned that it doesn’t have a happy ending.

We’re sure Siri will evolve to that one day, though. It’s in beta after all.

Smugglers Toast Apple In India As Iphone 4S Debut Still Late

New Delhi shopkeeper Fari Khan is one of Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s biggest fans. Still, he won’t be celebrating today when the company starts selling the iPhone 4S in India.

“Apple is the greatest company in the world,” said Khan, sitting behind a counter at his store in New Delhi’s Ghaffar Market. “But I hope they never open a store in India because it will put me out of business.”

Khan, 27, makes his living selling smuggled Apple products and earns a premium in the time between the official release of a new device in the U.S. and its Indian debut. His 10-foot-wide shop, located in a lane behind a Hindu temple devoted to the goddess Durga, the protector of good against evil, carries an Apple logo and the words ‘genuine reseller’ above its glass front.

Apple is cutting the time it takes to unveil its gadgets in India: the iPhone 4S is hitting the market just over a month after the U.S., compared with 11 months for the previous model. Even so, the lag is enough to persuade punters to pay as much as 80,000 rupees ($1,536) for a phone smuggled from abroad and the thriving market for bootlegged iPhones, iPads and MacBooks in India takes the shine off product releases that are such crowd- pullers for the Cupertino, California-based company back home.

Tapping India

Even as rivals Nokia Oyj (NOK1V) and Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM) are tapping India to compensate for market-share losses in the U.S. and Europe, Apple doesn’t have one of its trademark stores in the country. Instead, it serves demand through 25 ‘Premium Reseller’ outlets scattered across the country’s six largest cities, according to the company’s website.

Nokia has more than 200,000 outlets in India and offers 13 smartphone models. Samsung Electronics Co. (005930) depends on the Asian nation for 3.3 percent of its smartphone sales, compared with Apple’s 0.2 percent, according to Framingham, Massachusetts- based researcher IDC.

“India could be significant, but Apple seems to be focusing on one emerging market at a time, China, Brazil, the Middle East and then others,” said Kulbinder Garcha, an analyst with Credit Suisse in New York. “They tend to apply the retail lessons learned, one country at a time.”

Steve Dowling, an Apple spokesman in Cupertino, declined to comment on the company’s India plans.

iPhone Vigils

The slow progress of Apple in India was on show at the official Apple reseller store in New Delhi’s DLF Place mall on Oct. 5, the day that the company’s founder Steve Jobs died. As mourning fans held iPhone-lit vigils outside Apple stores from New York to Hong Kong, workers at the New Delhi shop seemed unaware of his identity.

“You are asking about a job?” shop worker Suresh Kohli, 25, said when asked if more customers had visited the store to pay homage to Jobs. “I can check.”

Indians who did wait until today to get their hands on the 4S will pay service providers Bharti Airtel Ltd. (BHARTI) and Aircel Ltd. 44,500 rupees for the phone, or 32 percent more than the $649 charged for the 16-gigabyte, unlocked and contract-free phone in the U.S. Unlike many global providers, Indian phone companies do not offer deep discounts on handsets in return for a monthly contract.

Aircel stores in the cities of Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi and its suburbs were open through the night, said spokeswoman Shalini Sethi.

“Despite it pouring in Chennai, 20 customers had lined up to buy the phone,” she said. Sales across all cities were “robust,” she said, without giving a number.

Switching Tactics

The 8-gigabyte version of the iPhone 4 costs 37,900 rupees in India, or more than the 34,500 rupees that the discontinued 16-gigabyte version cost before the 4S was announced. The lower capacity iPhone 4 costs $549 contract-free in the U.S.

Now that the prices of the phones in India are known, Khan is switching tactics to undercut the official sellers by 5,000 rupees.

“When a smart Apple fan sees them charging 50,000 rupees while we sell for 45,000 rupees, where do you think he will go?” he said.

Indian Apple fanatic Guldeep Singh bought his iPhone 4S from Khan’s shop where the device was available 24 hours after its Oct. 14 debut in the U.S. Singh said he paid 80,000 rupees for the phone. The average annual salary of New Delhi residents was 117,000 rupees in the year to March 2010, Chief Minister Sheila Dixit said in her budget address this year.

“Apple doesn’t launch phones on time here so I figured out my own way to get the 4S,” said Singh, 36, a garment trader. “Why would I want dated technology in my pocket if I can afford the latest?”

8 Weeks Later, How Do iPhone 4S Users Feel?

Source

4S-analysis.jpg

Crimson Hexagon, a social media analytics firm, did some Twitter sentiment analysis to find out. The company examined more than 2 million tweets that mentioned the iPhone 4S, looking for strong opinions one way or the other as well as more nuanced, neutral reactions.

The result? Not quite as positive as Apple might wish. Some 37% of the tweets were generally favorable, 29% were negative, and 34% were neutral. More worryingly, the percentage of negative responses to the device is growing.

Perhaps the most troubling news for Apple is that the battery problem with the iPhone 4S, supposedly solved by an iOS 5 update, does not appear to be going away. Some 11% of the tweets examined mentioned an issue with the battery draining faster than expected. When Crimson Hexagon did an earlier analysis of iPhone 4S tweets, in mid-November, just 7% had a negative impression of the phone’s battery.
