4G Spectrum Auction

Recommended Posts

Govt is planning 4G spectrum auction by end of this year. This is really ridiculous as users have still not embrace 3G due to high cost. Even telcos are worried about their investment. Telcos are in big trouble if this happens. If they dont bid, then new cos will get it and will offer 4G at almost same price. IF they bid, then they need to invest again billions. This makes no business sense. Govt should also think how they are going to support industry with such policies.

Govt to auction 4G spectrum this year: Kapil Sibal

Source

BARCELONA: India is looking at holding spectrum auctions for the fourth generation (4G) mobile services by the end of this year, besides finalising plans to sell off radio waves for the 2G services, telecom minister Kapil Sibal has said.

"By the end of the year, we are actually going to auction 4G (spectrum). That is what our intent is. We have enough spectrum now to share with everybody," he said at the India Day function organised by his ministry at the Mobile World Congress here.

Sibal said the government will have enough radio waves for all operators after it is released from the defence services as well as the cancellation of 122 2G new licences by the Supreme Court in the 2G spectrum allocation case.

Sibal added, however, that the government does not want to put all the spectrum for auction at one go but the final decision will depend a lot on the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

"In fact, we don't think that we are going to put all the spectrum for auction. But that depends on what Mr Sarma (Trai chairman) does for us. The idea being that we should come up with enough spectrum to get reasonable price for ourselves," he said.

The minister said that government will auction 2G spectrum as well that which will be vacated by the cancellation of licences following Supreme Court order.

"We will auction spectrum. When that auction will take place is something that we have to work out. The procedure are laborious, the procedures are complex," he said.

The minister said the procedure for holding spectrum auctions should be very transparent.

If you see Airtel is like to participate in upcoming 4G auction and they are very eager to get pan India 4G spectrum to compete with RIL Infotel.

3G is a failure, mostly due to costly data tariffs. But I do not think 4G at this stage can be offered on a phone, 4G services will be mostly on dongles and tablets with inbuilt support of LTE.

But, isn't the BWA licenses (which were auctioned long back) for 4g? I'm confused.. .

BWA = 4G = LTE / WiMax

In June, 2010 the government auctioned two slots of BWA spectrum, which Infotel, Aircel, Qualcomm, etc won. Now some more spectrum have been freed up and it will be going under the hammer by the end of this year.

There is some hope for using my Photon ... even it will cost a bomb :P

Why is the telecom industry moving at such a slow pace ?

BWA spectrum was for 2.3 GHz frequency band. This is meant for LTE-TDD. LTE TDD will be preferable for data services. Wimax is abandoned across the world, even BSNL has surrendered their spectrum.

LTE FDD will be preferable for telephony services. It is supported on 700 Mhz band. Currently, these bands are allocated to Doordarshan and AIR for tv broadcasting. DOT wants DD to surrender these bands, unless these happens there are very few bands available in this range.

in 2010 they auction 2.3 Ghz for TDD-LTE or WIMAX (Wimax already being abandoned by Telecom gear Maker) 2.3 will be exclusively used for TDD-LTE (Time Division Duplex means Upload and Download Frequency is same 20 mhz in Sequence but Upload and download will be used as per Micro Second Time slot)

in 2012 end 700 mhz Frequency will be auctioned but 700 mhz International allocation is FDD (Frequency Duplex) means out of 20 Half will be for Upload and Half will be for download.

700mhz have 3 time more Coverage area then 2.3 ghz so 700mhz will definitely attract more operators with higher price.

Both FDD-LTE and TDD-LTE are supported by same Chip sets, Handsets and Modem so Compatibility will be there in future.

@hetaldp sir, thank you for the explanation.. But, is TDLTE by anyway possible over 700 mhz band? The reason for me asking this is that, i read from some blogs and forums that TDLTE is the better of the two(TD/FD) and it's the future..

Quoting from TheMobileIndian.com:

The auction that is planned will be for spectrum in the 700 MHz band, which will not just be more efficient than the current 2.3 GHz available to players like Reliance Infotel, it will also mean lower roll-out and maintenance cost of the network (lower even than 3G). This might be one of the reasons why the operators who currently have spectrum are yet to launch services. The better spectrum being auctioned might be the reason why operators who have spectrum are waiting for the picture to become clear before they freeze their plans in terms of technology and business plan

FD-LTE is operating at lower frequency, hence it will have wider coverage. Also the upload and download link are symmetric, as a result more suitable more telephony operations.

TDLTE will have lower coverage (range). However, the upload and download link will be asymmetric, as a result more suitable for services like internet (which have burst in traffic periodically). TDD is cheaper to operate and will be efficient. However, due to limited range, it will not be used for telephony (voice) operations.

FDD will be preferred by telcos over TDD due to its range. TDD will be preferred by data service providers.. Although, there is no full deployment of voice services on LTE. Currently, voice is carried over IP (VOIP).

Spectrum auction to kick off on Sept 29

The government will kick off the biggest ever spectrum auction on 2016 September 29 and plans to assign spectrum won in the auction within 30 calendar days from the date of making the payment, which takes 10 days.

The government is making available 2354.55 MHz of spectrum in the auctions and at base price it would garner Rs 5.56 lakh crore, which includes the additional Rs 27,000 crore of harmonised spectrum. The government is putting up large chunks of spectrum for the first time, which should help remove fragmentation and improve quality of services.

A single auction will be conducted in simultaneous multiple-round ascending (SMRA) format for seven bands — 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz.
