India's biggest security threat: Your made in China electronics can send data back to China

Recommended Posts

BC7AA839-6FCA-402A-BBEA-2AF892FE4884_w308_r1.jpgUS intelligence has now branded at least two Chinese companies a security threat after incriminating evidence was obtained that these companies were installing equipment in the US that could help Chinese military get data right from the heart of USA with the press of a switch.

The two companies are Huawei and ZTE, very well know telecom and networking equipement manufacturers that have presence in India as well as supply in huge quantities equipment to Indian telecom companies and consumers. In India this should sound an alarm bell for us.

For one, if this is true then we have Chinese intelligence equipment sitting in our homes, offices, telephone towers, mobiles, modems and many other networking equipment which will seriously compromise the national security of India.

And more alarming is the fact that though our defence equipment is sourced from US, Russia, UK and France there's no reason to believe Chinese made parts and communication equipement is not present and they are not bugged as well.

The intelligence is coming from a source that is as high as the US congress and there's no reason to believe they will level such serious charges against two specific Chinese companies without credible evidence. If it is for protection of trade reasons, they can do it in many other ways.

Also previously there have been findings from University of Cambridge of a computer chip manufactured in China that is used in US military equipment contains a secret “backdoor” that could severely compromise security. China has been accused by various governments of carrying out cyber attacks to steal corporate information and trade secrets in the past.

India has quietly informed companies to avoid using Chinese-made telecommunications equipment, fearing that it may have spy capabilities embedded within it. And, India's intelligence service, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) believes that China is using dozens of study centers that it has set up in Nepal near the Indian border in part for the purposes of spying on India.

In August 2011 a Chinese research vessel disguised as a fishing trawler was detected off the coast of Little Andaman, collecting data in a geostrategically sensitive region. In fact, the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu J. Jayalalitha had quoted that Chinese spies had infiltrated Sri Lanka and were closely spying on TN.

So India is not in the blind about Chinese ability to penetrate India in cyber space, networks as well physically to gather intelligence. But what is need of the hour is an auditing of all defence systems, networking equipement, computers in Government offices as well as all electronic equipment used by our leaders by independent security analysts, researchers and specialists.

And now is the time, if you are using a Chinese made phone, modem or other equipment change it to a made in India product.

Unfortunately, whatever is stated above is true, at least 85% of it. The Chinese have penetrated the world wide network is ways unimaginable and have made their stealthy presence felt (or rather not felt) through out the world. Most of the pen drives that we all buy are supposed to contain trojans that cannot be detected by any AV software. It is supposed to sit resident till the time a user plugs it into his laptop or PC and then hunts for sensitive data which could contain specific terms like "defence", "secret", "official", "weapon" etc. These pen drives store these data and later on transmit them online to the Chinese hacker whenever plugged into a device connected to the internet. So for those users who believe in using pen drives and other data devices on their secure networks, they better beware of the harm in doing so. Even complete formatting or cleaning of these drives will not remove the malware is what has been stated.

It is high time we woke up to this menace and make sure that we do not use pen drives / other storage devices while accessing / operating sensitive data.

Rahul

Why only huawei and zte from china are being attacked by indian or us govt for spying?

is it bcoz these companies growing at fater rate than its compititor?

is it bcoz people can belive that these companies deals with network, which can be used for sending data?

is it bcoz they are really doing and malware sent info?

is it bcoz next threat for indian and us economy comes from chinese people?

bcoz after rome, british and now us, it's chinese who will conquer world in next50-100 years.

is it bcoz some brain in huawei and zte doing it without knowing official of these companies?

It is not only Huawei or ZTE that is to be blamed. It is something that is more or less across the board. It has to do with majority of our computer hardware being made in China. I am not saying that it is only China that is bad. Till the time we are not self sufficient as regards our hardware and software requirements, we would continue to be at the receiving end of everything bad that is happening out in the WWW.

To bolster my case, I am placing reference to an article from Digit Magazine which incidentally was also reported by most of the major newspapers across where the Indian Armed Forces have realised about the threats that these "minor" devices can actually cause to our sovereignty. The aim of these words is not to cause harm or hurt anyone's feelings. It is just to make us all aware on how much we all trust our smart devices and accept blindly the fact that we do share sensitive data which could hinder our own progress or unknowingly benefit our rivals.

PS: Coming to the point of software, we all most of us use Windows as our OS without even knowing whether any kind of control has been incorporated in it my Microsoft, which after all is an American firm and would definitely look after US interests much ahead of any one else, if things came to the firing line.
