It seems MTS is extremely confident that their licences will be restored by the supreme court.

But, I've heard operators lose money on selling network locked handsets. Either they sell subsidized handsets or they try to sell overpriced ones which eventually decorate their own selves only, either way they get loser. Their only motto is to rake in more subscribers, not to sell handsets.

It seems MTS is extremely confident that their licences will be restored by the supreme court.

That confidence may be misplaced. raison d'etre for the supreme court cancelling all licenses was the principle of allocating scarce natural resources by auction when they are used for private profit. It did not go into the question whether a particular operator got the license in past allocation genuinely without any quid pro quo.

I really don't think Supreme Court will now allow MTS petition on innocence count as that can open up a Pandora's Box. Other operators can take the same plea and has to be allowed on equality before law principle.

But strange things can happen in india.

but rajan bhai

the fact that mts is backed by russian govt, won't that help it get its license back??

MTS being backed by Russian govt is not a relevant point for supreme court to decide positively.

Rajan bhai I have something like a conspiracy theory in my mind

1st MTS buying Aircel. Now the the thing is Aircel is somehow controlled by the tatas. A little about this was revealed in the Radia tapes, second if you notice how tata docomo and aircel have bid for 3g circles they almost never overlap each other, third anyplace docomo does not has network it latches to aircel. these things make me believe that aircel is/was tata's proxy.

Mukesh ambani wanted to buy aircel but the deal never went through, in my opinion tata was not comfortable selling it to mukesh. But they have good relation with sistema and also MTS shares tata's network where ever it does not has its own. And aircel needed to be sold so it goes to Sistema.

Now about MTS continuing its CDMA business there are three scenarios

1st somehow they get their licences restored.

2nd they share spectrum from tata

3rd I heard the news that BSNL wants to lease their CDMA network and with sistema via moscow having power to bully indian government they can get a pretty sweet deal. And for gsm they get Aircel and become a full fledged operator.

What do you think about my theory?

Friends...I have some thought about it

1. MTS was the only operator who had bid for CDMA in 2008, when everybody else opted for GSM

2. If MTS had gone ahead and participated in the 2G auction, their Curative Petition would have become Void (Court would have said, if you have not done anything wrong, then why did you bid in the auction)

3. With this price on 800Mhz, it would not be viable for a CDMA operator to make money out of this

4. MTS might wait for the supreme court order (On the Curative Petition) if it succeds then it would continue going the same way, if it fails, then it would look at taking up one of the operators who have participated in the bid (Aircel / Videocon / Idea / Uninor)

The mentioned operators does not want to really participate and look at launching services, they are just here to see a prospective buyer and sell their licences

Am sure Videocon is full and full backed by Mukesh Ambani, rest players would be out for sale soon

Any feedback on quality of Karbonn mobiles?

Rockstar V121 looks good if it cam be unlocked to be a true OMH with RUIM. Karbonn does not sell this model as OMH.

Nice find when cdma phones are scarce. But pricey for the features offered and locked ? too

Rockstart V121 is actually Karbonn KC620 which is dual active triple SIM (GSM + GSM + CDMA) phone - http://www.infibeam.com/Mobiles/i-Karbonn-KC620-Triple-Sim-Mobile/P-E-M-Karbonn-KC620-Trio.html

Don't know if the phone MTS is offering actually has 3 SIM slot and is made single SIM via software. In case it is then it can be unlocked as triple SIM phone by updating the firmware.
