Actually it supports the Divx format ,

MKV is a container only for Mp4 and similar formats, My understanding says it might play via usb but i am not sure

Doc. Im sure it wont play mkv files. if you want to play mkv files as well you have to buy a bluray player.

From the specs given I dont think this will play mkv files.I have a similar dvd player though 5+ years old got specifically to play avi divx xvid movies which i downloaded then has a usb port but wont even show mkv files on listing. So have a check if it can play then buy.If only for music then buy it mkv files via usb i doubt it

If the purpose is playing music, I would advice to get a DLNA supported device

Further, I think that the recommendation could be based on your budget and the Sony music system that you currently have.

Just a preliminary recommendation:

NAD DAC 2

A cheaper one could be this:

NAD DAC 1
