samsung-galaxy-s-ii-615.jpg

The Samsung Galaxy S II was introduced back in February . First expected to arrive by March, it now seems the earliest any retailer will stock the Galaxy S II is 29th April, over in Germany. Samsung Mobile India however, announced a bigger delay, stating a June release date. We don't know who to believe. A lot must be going on backstage, and now Samsung has announced via its official Estonian Facebook page that its flagship Android phone will now ship with its dual-core processor upgraded to a 1.2GHz clockspeed, instead of the original 1GHz specs.

ZeuS Trojan now affecting BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Mobile phones

This is precuationary information.

The ZeuS Trojan attack is now affecting BlackBerry devices and has infected many worldwide, according to Trend Micro, a security research firm. Vanishing after being installed, the Trojan, specifically known as BBOS_ZITMO.B, primarily hijacks the SMS ability of the BlackBerry device, after sending an “App Installed OK” message to a botnet administrator in the United Kingdom.

According to Trend Micro, Symbian and Windows Mobile phones are also being affected by their own versions of the trojan, namely SYMBOS_ZBOT.B and WINCE_ZBOT.B.

Nokia to announce Symbian update; releases Nokia Drop beta app now

nokia_event.jpg

It seems all those Symbian updates that Nokia has been working on since October last year are finally coming to fruition, with a major “Discover what’s new with Symbian Smartphones’ announcement scheduled for April 12th in London.

Check out the press invite above. The update is expected to pretty much refine the interface of the platform, hopefully extending beyond just the homescreen, browser, onscreen keyboards, and messaging, if previous announcements are anything to go by.

In related news, Nokia Beta Labs has released an experimental sharing application called Drop, which will allow users to send images and links from a browser to their Symbian smartphone. The push-application is available for Symbian^3 and Series 60 5th Edition smartphones. It requires a browser extension, compatible only with Firefox 3.6 or 4, and Chrome 10. The drop icon will have to be added to the browser’s toolbar for easy access.

Samsung introduces Galaxy Neo mid-range Android offering

Samsung-Galaxy-Neo-615.jpg

Another day, another Samsung Galaxy Android device...called the Samsung Galaxy Neo, the Froyo running handset is for now only destined for Korea, but who knows, in time, Samsung might just bring this mid-range device to global shores.

The Samsung M220L Galaxy Neo is very similar to the Galaxy Ace in looks, with slightly lower-end specifications – a 3.5-inch (800x480 pixel resolution) display, an 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n support, Bluetooth 3.0, 1,500 mAh battery, and a 3MP camera.

While there probably won’t be space for the device in the Indian market between the Galaxy Fit and the Galaxy Ace, it’s still good to see Samsung churning out mid-range Android handsets.

The device has just passed through the FCC under the model number ‘SPH-D720′ which Engadget previously confirmed is the model number for the Nexus S 4G. The FCC testing confirms the presence of the WiMAX radio for Sprint’s network. (source: FCC via AndroidCentral)

The Nexus S 4G is said to be essentially a 4G-compatible Nexus S, with virtually nothing changing from the original Nexus S.

long.png

With the FCC paperwork indicating that the device being tested is a CDMA model that uses WiMAX, that points to a phone being offered by Sprint. And the next 4G phone to be offered by the nation's third largest carrier will be the Google Nexus S 4G.

Sure, other Android phones have 4G connectivity, but the beauty of the Google Nexus S 4G is that it is "Pure Android" which should put it near the front of the line for the next Android OS build after the included Gingerbread. In fact, running stock Android should allow the phone to always have the most up to date build of Google's open source OS.

As for the launch of the phone, Phonearena recently reported that April 24th appears to be a likely date to expect the phone's release by Sprint, with a price of $199.99 expected for those signing a two-year contract.

You can think of the BlackBerry Montana as Dakota's CDMA sibling. With both the Montana and Dakota likely to hit the market under BlackBerry Bold Touch branding, this is RIM's thinnest BlackBerry ever with premium materials and finishes and a forged, machined stainless steel frame. The BlackBerry Montana's features and specs include:

  • Dimensions: 115 x 66 x 10.5mm
  • Processor: Qualcomm 1.2GHz CPU
  • Radio: 800/1900 MHz EvDO Rev A with Receive Diversity (PCS Only); Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE; Dual Band UMTS (HSPA 7.2/5.76) 900/2100MHz
  • Display: 2.8" diagonol - VGA 640 x 480, resolution 287dpi
  • Camera: 5mp - Flash - Image Stabilization - HD Recording (720p)
  • Navigation: Capacitive Touch, Optical Trackpad
  • Keypad: Wide QWERTY - Physical Send, End, Escape, Menu, Right Side Convenience Key, Volume Control
  • Memory: 8GB - 768MB RAM - up to 32GB MicroSd Crad
  • WiFi: 2.4 GHZ b/g/n - 5GHz a/n - Mobile Hotspot
  • Connectivity: Micro USB - Bluetooth - NFC
  • Sensors: Magnetometer - Accelerometer - Proximity

The screen resolution is way high, better than the BlackBerry Curve Touch which is going to be a basic touchscreen model. As for the release date, it’s scheduled for Q3 of 2011, not so bad.

Microsoft details the Windows Phone 7 'Mango' update at MIX 11

Quantas_-_Screenshot_2_270x450.jpg

As expected, Microsoft detailed the upcoming Mango update for Windows Phone 7 at the MIX 11 developer event Las Vegas. The update is expected in sometime during the American Fall. It will offer many of the missing essential features, such as true multitasking including third party programs, built-in hardware acceleration for Flash and video content, as well as more complete Xbox integration, including a possible controller interface.

Joe Belfiore detailed some of the behind-the-scenes developer features that enabled true application multitasking. A big part of this was how the Live Tiles of the apps would be able to display information, and the manners in which they can be accessed without navigating directly to them.

Some of these features were demonstrated with a preview version of the Spotify digital music service app, which allowed users to pause, change tracks etc, while navigating through the phone. The Qantas app was also showcased, giving customers a wealth of “glance and go” information right from the tile, from check in and gate information to maps and flight details.

The Mango update and its SDK will also allow developers to access the camera and motion sensor of the phone, allowing them to be used in apps. Developers would also have access to audio and file transfers. Other Mango features that were showcased included a barcode scanning app by Amazon, and customizable ringtones. The Internet Explorer 9 browser for WP7 was also showcased, winning a speed test against iOS and Android’s native browser.

Microsoft also announced the release of the Silverlight 5 platform, allowing for improved graphics performance within apps, as well as audio playback for HTML5 webpages. Developers will also be happy to know that Microsoft will be releasing a software development kit for Kinect for Windows soon. It will release the source code after the software development kit is released.

Apps such as Skype, Angry Birds, and IMDb were also announced for the new future.

HTC Sensation to arrive in India by Q2; HTC Sense 3.0 UI is only for next-gen devices

HTC-Sensation-620.jpg

The HTC Sensation was officially introduced to the world at a press conference in London last week, and now, HTC has confirmed the device will be coming to Asian markets including India by Q2, i.e., sometime in May or June.

HTC has also announced via its Twitter feed that the new enhanced UI introduced with the HTC Sensation, known as HTC Sense 3.0, will only be supported by future devices, and, the current generation of HTC phones will not be upgraded to this. This is apparently due to hardware requirements of the new UI, and if the HTC Sensation is the minimum specification for it, these requirements are quite stellar.

The HTC Sensation has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, coupled with the Adreno 220 GPU, part of Qualcomm’s latest MSM8260 Snapdragon chipset. HTC Sense 3.0 UI is also supported by the HTC Flyer, which is no slouch either, featuring a 1.5GHz processor. The HTC EVO 3D, bearing a similar 1.2GHz processor (MSM8660) as the HTC Sensation, will also support it.

Samsung Galaxy S II vs. HTC Sensation - battle of the 1.2GHz dual-core smartphones

Samsung-Galaxy-S_II-vs-HTC_.jpg

Sparks are flying and the heat is on, with two supremely-endowed phones from leading manufacturers on the verge of launching in India. Let us compare them head to head, and decide the favourite ahead of the showdown… The Samsung Galaxy S2, expected in early May, will release before the HTC Sensation, which for now is expected sometime in May or June.

Both are Android 2.3 Gingerbread devices, with HTC Sense 3.0 UI for the Sensation and Touch Wiz 4.0 UI for the S2. The Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation are powered by 1.2 GHz dual-core processors, and feature 1GB and 768 MB RAM respectively. The HTC Sensation has a higher resolution 4.3-inch screen at 540x960 pixels, while Galaxy S II has a 480x800 resolution 4.3-inch screen.

Galaxy S2 comes with 16GB and 32GB built-in storage, whereas the HTC Sensation only offers 1GB - even if it is expandable to 32GB via microSD, and has a 8GB card bundled. Considering the display, the Samsung Galaxy S II has Super AMOLED Plus tech compared to the HTC Sensation’s Super LCD, a battle that Samsung might just win on fight night.

Both devices have an 8MP rear camera, capable of 1080p HD video recording, with the Samsung Galaxy S II bearing a single LED flash and a 2MP front-facing camera, and the HTC Sensation bearing a dual LED flash and a 1.3MP webcam upfront. The HTC Sensation also records stereo sound in addition.

The powerful Exynos 1.2GHz dual-core processor and Mali 400 GPU of the Galaxy S2 runs on a 1650 mAh battery, while HTC Sensation’s Qualcomm MSM8260 1.2GHz dual-core and Adreno 220 GPU runs on a 1520 mAh battery. The battle for battery life will of course, depend on just how well optimized the UI and OS are, how much power the respective displays consume, and a hundred other small factors. HTC has rated the Sensation’s battery to deliver up to 400 hours of 2G standby time, and roughly 6.5 hours of talktime on 3G. Samsung has not released these figures for the S II.

The Galaxy S II is a much lighter phone than the Sensation, with weight of around 116 grams, compared to a relatively hefty 148 grams. The Galaxy S II is also a super-slim offering with a width of just 8.49 mm, compared to the HTC Sensation's relatively obese 11.3 mm thickness.

As things stand, the Galaxy S 2 seems like the favourite in a rather evenly matched fight of 1.2GHz dual-core CPU powered phones with 4.3-inch displays. Features like document editing abilities, and USB on-the-go are also in its favour. Pricing will be an important factor, and for now, Samsung is expected to price the Galaxy S II at the lower end of the Rs. 30,000-35,000 segment, and HTC, the higher end. Until the first round begins, all eyes are on HTC’s corner.

Samsung to launch desktop-replacement 2GHz dual-core smartphone in 2012

samsung-exynos-small.jpg

While the world is still looking forward to the first 1.2GHz dual-core phone to launch with the Samsung Galaxy S II, it seems Samsung is hard at work designing a 2GHz dual-core phone for 2012.

The rumour was apparently sourced from a high-ranking Samsung executive, who said the upcoming smartphone would have "data processing capacities of a regular PC". While nothing has been confirmed, it is more than probable than Samsung would be using a new version of its ARM-based Exynos processors.

As always, the clockspeed is not everything, and a truly polished and optimized UI experience is a must for the advantages of a 2GHz dual-core processor to be apparent, something the world's first dual-core phone, the LG Optimus 2X, didn't do very well..

For now, we simply can’t imagine mobile applications, whether software or hardware, to use 1.2GHz dual-core processors completely, and so, it’s not inconceivable that at least in the near future, a 2GHz dual-core phone is complete overkill for all practical purposes.

But what I really think is going for upcoming 2GHz-DualCore phones next year will be a better choice than going for 1.2 or 1GHz-DualCore processor equipped phones for NOW...

Because I hope the Android OS + its most apps will be made to take FULL use of the DualCore processor next year only and definitely NOT now, imho....

Yes I agree I believe post Honeycomb we will have Android more optimized to use these high end CPUs because Honeycomb is primarily targeted at tabs which have Tegra2/higher end processors. The thing that worries me though is no one is thinking about battery improvement. What is point of 2 GHz processor with measly battery. Usability should be considered.

Nokia Dual Sim Touch and Type Slider Phone C2-06 surfaced in India leaked pictures first on net

Hackintosh-India got a rare access to secret Nokia's dual sim touch and type phone from a tester in India. The phone had the markings of C0-00 , which confirms this phone will fall in C series of Nokia. Internal device name for bluetooth shows C2-06. The back panel has the device name unmarked.

Two important features noticed in this phone were dual sim and touch and type. The camera was a below average 2megapixel without flash, the phone lacked wifi and 3G. The phone seemed to run on Symbian Series 40 6th Edition OS and the touch was very crappy compared to Nokia-X3 02 with it's resistive touch screen

We guess if everything goes well with Nokia, this phone might get to market in next few months, lets see at that time whether this device has any improvements.
