LAVA-S12_1.jpg

Lava Mobiles has announced its first Android S12 smartphone on Diwali eve. Joining the ranks of around 19 Android smartphones in ‘under-10K’ price band, S12 will retail for INR 9,999. Competition is very tough in this segment with companies like Samsung, LG and Motorola already present.

You won’t find specifications any earth shattering, but company seems to have done a decent job with the smartphone’s overall look and feel with nice features. Lava S12 features outdated Android 2.2, 600MHz processor, 5MP rear camera, 1300mAh battery and 3.2 inch HVGA (480×320) Capacitive touch display.

Lava has also pre-loaded around 21 apps on the smartphone including an office suite, Saavn, TOI, TuneWiki, Zenga TV and Hungama MyPlay. The smartphone will soon be available in the retail store and e-commerce portals.

HTC launches new handset with Beats Audio...

Source

HTC Rezound first impressions: Music to my ears

HTCRezound_PeterChou_610x406.jpg

HTC CEO Peter Chou shows off the HTC Rezound.

(Credit: Sara Tew/CNET)

To absolutely nobody's surprise (twice), HTC today announced the HTC Rezound for Verizon, the first U.S. smartphone to use HTC-owned Beats Audio.

Originally known as the Vigor, the Rezound is HTC's stateside answer to Europe and Asia's HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio, which CNET got a chance to see in early October at CTIA.

The Rezound, which features the same integration with the Beats headphones as the Sensation XL, will run on Verizon's ultrafast 4G LTE network. In addition, it's packing a 4.3-inch 720p HD display, which should make mincemeat out of qHD displays we've seen from phones like the Motorola Droid Bionic. There's a ton more besides with this Android 2.3 Gingerbread device, so let's jump in.

Design

The Rezound has rounded corners, and a face just barely set into the unit. HTC has long delivered on excellent phone craftsmanship, as the Amaze 4G and Sensation 4G phones have demonstrated.

The Rezound has a matte back cover surrounding an island of ridges on its backing, to help with grip. The camera and LED flash are on the back cover, with the volume rocker on the right spine. The Micro-USB charging hub is on the left, and the 3.5mm headset jack is up top.

It's not as flashy-looking a phone to my eyes as the all-white HTC Radar 4G, or even the purple HTC Rhyme, but HTC phones are solidly built and that interesting patterning on the back does give it a little extra character. I wish it had Gorilla Glass to better protect the goods.

Taking a cue from the HTC Droid Incredible, the Rezound is designed inside and out.(Credit: Sara Tew/CNET)

Features

The features are where the Rezound can soar. Of course it's off to a good start with Verizon's 4G LTE network, which offers currently unbeatable speeds. The big deal is the set of Beats by Dr. Dre earbuds that come with each phone--I cover those in the following section.

Another ballyhooed trait is the phone's 4.3-inch 720p HD touch display. While it certainly sounds impressive, we won't really be able to judge clarity, color, sharpness, and all the rest until we sit it side-by-side with our favorite screens--right now those belong to the Samsung Galaxy S II phones, the iPhone 4S(and iPhone 4), and the LG Marquee.

It's also equipped with a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm MDM9600 processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a 16GB preinstalled microSD card. It'll carry HTC Sense 3.5, the absolute latest version of HTC's custom Android interface. Sense 3.5 will feature a customizable and interactive lock screen from which you can do things like check the weather, stocks, and social network updates.

For multimedia, there's a rear-facing 8-megapixel camera with support for 1080p HD video capture and fun effects like slow-motion recording. There's a front-facing 2-megapixel camera as well. These are the top-notch specs we'd hope for in the Rezound, but of course camera quality isn't about megapixels alone. The Rezound has a low-light sensor to help improve night shots. We shall see.

HTC hasn't had a reputation for the ultimate cameras across the board, HTC said during the launch event in New York, despite the feature-packed HTC Amaze 4G and the T-Mobile MyTouch Slide 4G. Like those two, the Rezound's camera will have instant capture, panorama, and action burst modes. There will also be photo-editing tools, which is a definite plus, especially as more and more smartphones from competing brands include these.

Other details include a 1,620mAh battery, Bluetooth 3.0, DLNA support, hot-spot support for up to 10 devices, and Mobile High Definition Link (MHL) capability for watching content on a compatible HDTV.

Apps like HTC Watch, a movie app, are also onboard.

Beats Audio

Just how good is Beats by Dr. Dre? Good enough to warrant buying the phone? Our team got a demo of the Sensation XL's Beats headphones at CTIA and yes, with the one-two combination of the hardware (the headsets) with the onboard software, they made a big difference.

When you plug in the headphones, the phone recognizes that you've got Beats. When you turn on the software algorithm, it really boosts the sound, specifically boosting the bass and creating louder, fuller, and heavier audio. It's like playing music through your car speakers, versus pumping up a bass line you can feel thrumming in your seat.

One often-heard criticism is that the headphones aren't a one-size-fits-all solution for every musical genre. One common complaint is that the aggressive tones degrade more delicate symphonies and choral music. However, people who predominantly listen to rock, hip-hop, and other genres in that vein will notice a rounder sound. Of course, we'll do some more in-depth audio tests once we get a phone in hand for an appreciable length of time.

The Beats in-ear headphones on their own range from $120 to $180 when you buy them through retail channels, so there's a definite advantage to buying an HTC Beats phone like the Rezound, which has in-ear buds bundled in.

What I will say is that if you're simultaneously in the market for a new phone and some new earbuds, get ye to a Verizon store when these come out and try them for yourself. Pro tip: if you can manage it, take a microSD card filled with songs you like to see how the Beats-enhanced sound plays out.

The Ice Cream Sandwich question

Verizon has a problem on its hands. It's lining up a plethora of presumably fantastic phones, like the razor-thin Motorola Droid Razr and this here Rezound. But it's also going to start selling the formidable Samsung Galaxy Nexus sometime in mid-to-late

November, with its enormous Ice Cream Sandwich update. Where does that leave the Rezound?

The good news is, Rezound fans (and HTC devotees) should know that HTC is committed to bringing phones introduced within 18 months of an Android release up to speed, so yes, the Rezound will get Ice Cream Sandwich. HTC has already said during its launch announcement that Ice Cream Sandwich "will likely come early next year." The question I can't answer is exactly when, but look for it in January.

Price and availability

The HTC Rezound will cost $299.99 with a new, two-year Verizon service agreement and will be available beginning November 14 at Verizon, Best Buy, and Best Buy Mobile stores. You'll also need a $39.99 minimum Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan and a minimum $30-per-month data plan.

This is a costly bundle that makes the Rezound one of Verizon's priciest phones, and that's even without the prestige of Android Ice Cream Sandwich--for now. LTE is expensive, there's premium hardware on hand if you count the prestige headphones, and it has the hottest specs on the market, so the price, while high, is not a surprise. I suspect holiday deals will kick in once the phone hits shelves.

In sum

The HTC Rezound did not disappoint. The screen quality, camera, and speed all promise to be top-of-the-line, and the phone also comes with a pair of celebrity-branded in-ear headphones that are worth quite a bit on their own. At $300 and data requirements, the Rezound may be one of Verizon's priciest phones, but it also promises to be one of its most powerful. It'll be a hot contender against Verizon's other forthcoming handset powerhouses: the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the Motorola Droid Razr.

CNET accidentally reveals Galaxy Nexus on Sprint...

Ad mix-up reveals Galaxy Nexus on new carrier

The Galaxy Nexus could be making its way to Sprint Nextel's upcoming 4G LTE network.

An advertisement that was accidentally published on one of CNET's Consumer Electronics Show

pages showed off the Galaxy Nexus, currently only on Verizon Wireless, as a phone that will run on Sprint's 4G LTE network. To ensure no confusion with its current 4G WiMax service, the 4G LTE part of the line was highlighted.

A spokeswoman from Sprint declined to comment on the ad or the prospect of the Galaxy Nexus coming to Sprint.

But the Galaxy Nexus, or any 4G LTE phone, coming to Sprint in the next few months makes a lot of sense. Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse said today that the company plans to launch its 4G LTE network in

10 cities by the first half of the year, suggesting that devices will come as well. The company previously said devices would come in the second half of the year.

The Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone to run

Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, would make for a nice start.

The phone has gotten generally strong reviews for its revamped user interface, and the new features that are packed into the new version of Android.

The Galaxy Nexus could conceivably be one of the devices Sprint announces at

CES. While the company doesn't have a press conference scheduled at the event, it is expected to make some announcements on Monday.

Such a device would help with AT&T and Verizon Wireless preparing their own onslaught of 4G LTE device launches. Verizon Wireless previously said a vast majority of its smartphones would be 4G LTE, and AT&T has been quickly bulking up its own 4G LTE portfolio after launching the network earlier this year. Earlier today, AT&T said it would

expands its own 4G LTE network to 11 more cities, including major spots like New York and San Francisco.

Lenovo Jumps Into the Smartphone Fray With the S2

Source

By Joshua Schnell, PCWorld Jan 8, 2012 9:01 PM

Yes, you read that right. Lenovo has thrown its hat into the smartphone war with the newly introduced S2. This is the first time that Lenovo, the worlds second largest PC maker, has developed a smartphone for consumers. The S2, announced at a press conference in Las Vegas, features security systems to protect personal data, prevent phishing attacks, and to secure network and SMS traffic.

Under the hood, the S2 has a dual-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, as well as an 8-megapixel camera. Out of the box, the phone will sync photos, music and video across mobile devices and Lenovo's laptop lineup.

lenovo_smartphone_s2_01_606-8496832.jpg

The S2 comes with either 8GB or 16GB of storage, depending on the configuration. Other specs include a 3.8-inch screen with 800 by 480-pixel resolution, a front-facing 0.3-megapixel (VGA) camera for video-conferencing, and either 512MB or 1GB of RAM (depending on the version you get).

One thing to note: The S2 comes with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), not the brand new Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). We haven't heard as of this writing whether or not Lenovo will release an Ice Cream Sandwich update for the S2.

Lenovo has yet to announce an international shipping date, or price information to the press. They have, however, mentioned that the S2 will be available immediately in China.

Lenovo Racer-A hands-on with Stephen Miller

Source

Here at CES 2012 during Showstoppers, we’ve been fortunate enough to get a personal interview with no less than Lenovo’s own Stephen Miller speaking all about the 1st IA platform smartphone based on the Intel Medfield chip, the Lenovo Racer-A SmartPhone. This device is part of the Idea Smart Phone K series and has a 4.5-inch 720p multi-touch display with fabulous viewing angles. This device is capable of playing back 1080p, 30 frames per second video – it’s also got a 720p wireless display, full 3D media center, and an 8M AF camera on the back. The processor is the real hero here as it is, believe it or not, a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Medfield SoC.

image0020-580x434.png

This device will run Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread out of the box, WCDMA and HSPA+ connectivity, and LPDDR2 1GB + 32GB eMMC on the inside to keep you running quick and at the top of your game. The battery is 1890 mAh strong and will last the whole live-long day with the smartphone running a completely custom user interface over Android. This device is both light and relatively thin (or thick depending on who you’re talking to), and as you’ll notice – it’s got three Android capacitive buttons below the display.

This smartphone has five home screens and its user interface is very similar to what we’ve seen with the Lenovo Android dual-core tablets of 2011, but the launcher is Lenovo’s newest for smartphones specifically. Playing video at full resolution, you’ll be able to scrub or jump to any moment without lag. You can connect straight to your Lenovo Smart TV via Wi-fi, streaming video over your home network.

The camera is a dual-LED flash having 8 megapixels on the back with a 5 megapixel camera on the front – HD for both sides! The gallery application that comes with the device is unique in that it’s got a sort of 3D view to it, viewing images, zooming in and out with great ease and without a hitch. The ports on this device are thus: a microUSB port on the bottom right of the device, a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top, and that’s it. There’s also a speaker grille at the top along with the power/lock button, and the back of the device is removable along with the battery.

image0019-580x317.png

Dual-Hyperthreading is being used on this device, taking all the bits of a process and making them work as effectively as possible, and the battery does not get eaten up while you process. The Intel Medfield chip makes all of this possible. This device is made to be an everywhere device, booting up in a matter of seconds and with details that make it great for education, business, and the home. Inside the device you’ll also find a compass, gyroscope, and GPS.

This device is upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich, mind you, plans in the works for an eventual upgrade inside 2012 – though the interface will likely remain quite similar to what it is right this minute. This device will be released inside the second half of 2012 in the China market. We’ll have a much closer look at this device later this year when its much closer to release time – seeya then!

Last great hope? First pics of next-gen BlackBerry 10 smartphone

  • Is this RIM's new BlackBerry phone?

Want to glimpse the future of BlackBerry?

Today, CrackBerry posted a leaked presentation slide that features the first look at a smartphone running the BlackBerry 10 operating system, an upcoming RIM platform that has been no-show, all-tell for months now.

With RIM’s drastic loss of market share in North America and the corporation’s fresh shifts of power, the beleaguered company could use a round of positive buzz. If something were to deliver such a feat, it’s London, the code-named device pictured in the leaked document. And it could be RIM's last great hope.

Though the BlackBerry-maker teased London and other upcoming phones in a roadmap presentation earlier this month, concrete details remain scarce. But CrackBerry learned the phone is undergoing tests with a 1.5-GHz dual-core TI OMAP 5 processor. The site also surmises the phone could be sold through carriers with CDMA networks. That would make London a vehicle for Verizon or Sprint here in the U.S., but it is expected the phone will see the light of day in the U.K. before rising over our shores.

Until then, we can only appreciate what’s teased in the leak. For instance, the all-touch interface that eschews the BlackBerry keyboard in favor of something reminiscent of modern devices from Android, Apple, and Windows Phone.

Also the back- and front-facing cameras, and an interface that anchors some navigation to the bottom of the touchscreen. If we made $10,000 gentleman’s bets, we’d also wager that the edges, top, and bottom of London will feature a soft-touch, rubber material, but it’s much too early to gamble.

In a fit of mistaken identity, London’s geography was thought to be revealed in a separate leak last year. While that phone was capped at the top and bottom with a steel-ish material and wore sharply tappered edges, today’s feature has more rounded curves and an all black outfit.

BlackBerry has asked the real London to please stand up on September 2012, so we’ll have to wait to learn more about the true premier BlackBerry 10 phone.

Nvidia's first 'complete' smartphone: ZTE Mimosa X\

Source

mimosax.jpg

Nvidia's Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip architecture has thus far been used in a handful of high-end Android "superphones": Motorola Atrix 4G, Photon 4G, LG Optimus G2X, and the Samsung Captivate Glide, to name a few.

Today, Nvidia and Chinese smartphone maker ZTE announced the Mimosa X, the first Android smartphone to use Nvidia's products for both applications processing and wireless communications since the company acquired wireless modem maker Icera last June.

The Mimosa X is powered by the dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 mobile processor, GeForce GPU, and Icera 450 HSPA+ (21Mbps) modem, it will run Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), feature a 4.3-inch (960 x 540) screen, a rear-facing 5 megapixel camera and a forward-facing chat camera, as well as 4 GB of storage expandable to 32 GB via microSD.

The ZTE Mimosa X doesn't yet have an exact launch date or price, but it will debut some time in the second quarter, with pricing targeted at the "mainstream" smartphone consumer. This is a departure from all former Tegra 2 smartphones, which all entered the market at the high end. So not only does this phone usher in the total Nvidia chip solution, it also brings Tegra to the masses.

HTC launches 3 more new handsets with better camera and music.

Hands On With the HTC One X, S, and V

Source

335968-mwc-htc-one-x.jpg?thumb=y

BARCELONA—HTC is simplifying. The smartphone company last month announced a plan to radically cut down the number of models it releases, and today at Mobile World Congress it's rolling out its three major Android phones for 2012: the HTC One S, X and V. I spent some quality time with them and came away impressed, but powerful partners could still kill HTC's branding revolution.

First, about S, X, and V: They're supposed to be the HTC One S, X and V everywhere in the world. No matter what carrier you buy them on, you're supposed to be able to buy an HTC One S, X or V. Are you starting to see the problem? If you haven't figured it out yet, I'll get to that later. First, the phones.

The HTC One X, pictured at the left, coming to AT&T, is the big one. This is a monster with a 4.7-inch screen; I think it's a hand-buster, but I hate those super-huge phones. It's well-designed for something with gigantism, though. Its standout feature is the 1280-by-720 Super LCD 2 screen, which is almost entirely non-reflective, looks great even outdoors and seems to bring the image right to the front, with no glass layer visible between you and the screen. It really pops. The white plastic body is solid and clearly made from the highest quality materials, with a big silver bullseye on the back for the camera.

The One X runs Android 4.0 with HTC's Sense, a software overlay that I've always liked but that some folks now criticize as unnecessary. It's certainly lighter on the land than it has been on previous versions of Android, not altering the base UI too much and not heavily altering the built-in PIM apps. HTC's attractive widgets, including its clock widget, are still available, and some UI elements are improved—for instance, multitasking now involves flipping through a Cover Flow-like set of screenshots.

290674-mwc-logo.jpg?thumb=y

HTC has a new image-processing chip which works wonders on the One X's camera: This thing is fast. The company told me it autofocuses in 0.2 seconds and goes shot-to-shot in 0.7. I took a bunch of pictures indoors and out and the f/2.0, 8-megapixel shooter was very fast, although not infallible; I got one blurry photo taken before the autofocus locked in. HDR mode was a special treat, much, much faster than I've seen on other phones like HTC's Amaze 4G. With HDR on, I could take a photo with a bright background, have it balance out the foreground and background, and not have to wait several seconds for it to assemble. Another neat trick: you can shoot pictures in the middle of capturing a 1080p HD video without missing a beat. The phone has a 1.3-megapixel front camera, too.

Another new feature here: An entirely proprietary Wi-Fi display system called "Media Link HD" which works with a dongle HTC will sell for an as-yet-unknown price. Plug the dongle into your TV, swipe three fingers up on your One X screen, and the TV will mirror your phone wirelessly, including games and videos.

The One X Comes with Beats Audio inside and Beats headphones too. And while the global version of the One X will be a quad-core phone with Nvidia's Tegra 3 processor running at 1.5GHz on board, AT&T's LTE version uses a Qualcomm S4 instead. I benchmarked the dual-core, 1.5GHz S4 as faster than a 1.2GHz Tegra, so it'll compete. The phone also has 32GB of storage on board and an 1800mAh battery, both sealed in and non-expandable.

That's a lot to process, isn't it? The HTC One X is a flagship statement from a company that clearly wants to take the momentum back from Samsung as the premiere provider of Android phones. It's huge, elegant, and stuffed full of new technologies and software ideas designed to make things easier. It's coming out on AT&T within the next few months, and it'll probably cost $299 with contract—that's my guess, not HTC's word.

T-Mobile's HTC One S, And the One With the Chin

HTC's One S, pictured at the right, is the middle child, and it's actually my favorite. This one is coming to T-Mobile. The One S is a smaller phone, about the width of an HTC Sensation but a little taller—in other words, totally usable in one hand. I can't believe I just described a phone with a 4.3-inch screen as "smaller," but that's what these 4.7-inch mega-phones do to you. The One S has a very attractive 4.3-inch, 960-by-540 Super AMOLED screen. It brings very saturated colors and deep blacks, but the pentile subpixel arrangement very slightly stipples some areas in a way that annoys people with extremely sharp eyes. Others won't notice.

335943-t-mobile-htc-one-s.jpg?thumb=y

The One S is a super-slim phone at 7.9mm, with a cool gray aluminum body. It'll use Qualcomm's dual-core S4 processor, and the T-Mobile model will run on the carrier's HSPA+ 42 network. It has the same rear camera as the One X, with a VGA front camera. It has 16GB of memory, and there's still no memory slot; like the One X, this is a unibody design. Ice Cream Sandwich is here just like on the other two phones, as well as Beats Audio. Beats headphones will probably be included, as will Media Link HD.

Held in the hand, this phone is pure elegance. I like how the Sense UI widgets give a little more humanity to Android's cold interface. The phone feels fast, and the body materials are top-notch. Compared with the One S, Samsung's Galaxy S II on T-Mobile is big and bulky, and probably no more capable.

So what of the HTC One V? It's the one with the chin. This design element is going to generate some strong opinions: the V has a big ol' chin jutting down below its 3.7-inch screen, just like the old HTC Legend did. The One V is HTC's affordable device, coming to regional carriers like MetroPCS around the end of the second quarter. Yep, it still has Ice Cream Sandwich.

The specs here aren't stunning, but the body is well built and the whole thing looks elegant – as long as you're okay with that chin. The One V has a 3.7-inch, 800-by-480 Super LCD screen; it's a bit more reflective than the Super LCD 2 on the other phones, and you can see the glass in front of the image. It's running a 1Ghz, single-core Qualcomm S2 processor, and has 4GB of storage with no memory card slot. It has Beats Audio, but doesn't come with Beats headphones.

Some of HTC's new innovations are still here, though: the new image chip works with the One V's 5-megapixel camera, although picture processing is much, much slower than it was on the One X; it took my One V a few seconds to assemble an HDR image that the One X handled nearly instantly.

HTC's Worst Partners

HTC wants to simplify: it wants you to be able to buy a One S, a One X or a One V on several different carriers.

But HTC's new branding strategy could pretty quickly be torpedoed by U.S. carriers, who demand unique names and slightly different specs for every phone so that devices can't be easily compared across carriers.

Other than the Apple iPhone, the one great example of a phone that crossed all carriers was the LG Optimus One, which was sold as the Optimus on at least six different carriers, but as the Vortex on Verizon and the Phoenix on AT&T. Samsung's Galaxy S II, another attempt at cross-carrier branding, has been saddled with the unfortunate moniker of "Epic 4G Touch" on Sprint and turned down by Verizon entirely. The iPhone is the only phone that the carriers don't make more confusing.

That's the big question with these very nice phones. HTC has always had the potential to match Apple's focus on design and elegance, but last year it had an overly complex product line. Will its carrier partners saddle its new phones with hideous names and unfortunate bloatware? Let's hope not.

Lava Reveals XOLO X900

India's first "Intel Inside" smartphone

intelthumb.jpg

Last year, we had tipped you about Intel's plans of entering the smartphone market, and now this has turned into reality. The silicon giant has teamed up with India's low-cost handset maker, Lava to debut its mobile-centric Atom Z2460 processor. The first mobile to mark this venutre is the XOLO X900, a touchscreen smartphone based on the Intel XMM 6260 Platform.

The handset runs Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), and is eligible for the ICS update in the future. It is powered by a 1.6 GHz processor and has 1 GB of RAM. The phone features a 4" LCD screen with pixel dimensions of 1024x600. Additionally, you get 16 GB of internal memory, an 8 MP main and a VGA front camera, HDMI port, and NFC.

intelup.jpg

Although Lava hasn't confirmed, I think the handset will also have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS connectivity features. The gadget is expected to hit the stores after April, but neither Lava nor Intel have shed the light on its pricing. Intel is a well known brand in India, therefore it will be interesting to see whether the iconic Intel Inside logo will manage to attract buyers.
