Dutch court orders Apple to pay Samsung damages over patent

(Reuters) - A Dutch court ordered Apple Inc (AAPL.O) to pay damages to Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) over a patent violation in the Netherlands, the latest twist in the global legal battle waged by the two rival phone and computer makers.

Apple and Samsung have been suing each other in about a dozen countries for the last few years as they compete globally for consumers in the fast-growing markets for smart phones and tablet computers.

The U.S. company has accused Samsung of "slavishly" copying the iPhone and iPad tablet through products that run on Google's (GOOG.O) Android software. The Korean firm has counter-sued with claims accusing Apple of infringing its patents.

A court in The Hague ruled Apple had violated a Samsung patent used in some of Apple's phones and tablet computers to connect to the Internet, and said damages should be based on certain iPhone and iPad sales in the Netherlands.

The violation applies to iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4 and iPad 1 and 2, the court said. Damages should be based on Dutch sales figures since August 4, 2010, which the court said was the date when Apple could have known it was violating Samsung's patent.

"We will be seeking damages. The amount of damages will be determined by the court, following the relevant court proceedings," a Samsung spokeswoman said.

Samsung added that the ruling relates only to the Netherlands and does not have any binding effect for future rulings in other countries.

An Apple spokesman had no immediate comment.

The Dutch court dismissed three other patent infringements claimed by Samsung.

Apple has a complex relationship with Samsung, a conglomerate that makes computer chips, Galaxy smartphones and televisions.

While Samsung's smartphones and tablet computers run on Android and compete with Apple's products, Samsung is also a key components supplier to Apple.

Microsoft Announces Windows Phone 8, Won't Support Current Handsets:

Higlights:

1) Windows 8 Phone doesn't support current Windows 7.x devices, as Windows 7.x was based on Windows CE but Windows 8 Phone based on the same NT Kernel that it's PC brethern Windows 8 is based on.

2) Now it's easy for developers to develop Metro apps for both PC Windows 8 & Windows 8 phone as they both share same code base.

3)Good New for Windows based phone users as Windows Phone 8 will support dual-core processors at launch & quad-core support will come at a later date according to the Microsoft. Infact Windows Phone 8 can theoretically support up to 64 cores). So now Windows Phone users doesn't need to feel inferior of hardware(out-dated I say) when compare to the android fellows.

4) Another inferiority about Windows 7.x devices it their screen resolution, but now it is also changed as Microsoft officially announced that Windows 8 Phone supports 800x480, 1280x768, and 1280x720 resolutions.

5) Another very good change in Windows 8 Phone & most anticipated change that Windows 7.x users did wish is microSD support for removable storage.

6) VoIP/Skype integration, in-app purchases, Internet Explorer 10 (complete with anti-phising technology), native NFC support, and a mobile Wallet Hub to store credit/debit cards, and deals/offers( just like Google wallet & Apple's passbook Microsoft announced Windows Phone Wallet on the sidelines of major Windows Phone 8 announcement). Nokia's NAVTEQ mapping technology will also be built-in to Windows Phone 8 including offline maps. Another new feature, Tap+Send, allows users to "bump" phones to share data. However, we've seen this functionality before in Android devices.

7) The biggest change announced is a revamp of the Start screen and the Live Tiles system. Microsoft is now giving users the ability to completely control the Start screen and resize tiles to make their phones more personal. For example, if the Pictures hub is most important to you, you can resize the tile to make is take a huge portion of your screen while at the same time reducing the size of tiles that don't interest you as much.

Microsoft announced Windows Phone Wallet:

On the side lines of Windows 8 Phone launch event, Microsoft announced Windows Phone Wallet which is just like Google Wallet & Apple's Passbook. Just like Google Wallet, Windows Phone Wallet uses NFC for the transaction. But Microsoft's solution appears to dive deeper than just a basic way of linking your credit card to your phone. It'll also serve as a direct link for in-app purchasing and store personal information, all on the phone. And also it throws in PayPal for good measure. Again, the best of both worlds.

After 5 years, Apple's iPhone has generated $150B in revenue

This week marks the fifth anniversary of the launch of the first iPhone. Since then, Apple's smartphone is estimated to have generated the company $150 billion of cumulative revenues worldwide.

The first iPhone officially launched on June 29, 2007, making this Friday the official five-year anniversary. Recognizing the milestone, Strategy Analytics on Wednesday offered its latest statistics, noting that Apple has shipped 250 million iPhones cumulatively worldwide, generating $150 billion in cumulative revenues.

"The iPhone portfolio has become a huge generator of cash and profit for Apple," said Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics. "A quarter of a billion iPhones have been shipped cumulatively worldwide in the first five years since launch and Apple reaches its fifth birthday at the top of its game."

While the first five years of the iPhone have been an undeniable success for Apple, propelling the company to become the largest in the world by market capitalization. But Mawston said the next five years could be more difficult for Apple, as the competition improves and some mobile operators become concerned about subsidies spent on the iPhone.

Currently, the iPhone is so popular that Apple sells more handsets per day than there are babies born in the world, according to VoucherCodes.co.uk. The retail outlet also noted that since the release of the iPhone, Apple's worldwide brand ranking has catapulted from 44th place to No. 1.

The first iPhone was introduced in early 2007 by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs as three devices in one: a "revolutionary mobile phone," a "widescreen iPod," and a "breakthrough Internet communications device." Since then, the iPhone's upward trajectory has been consistent, as Apple continues to deliver record breaking quarters and sales continue to grow.

In the last quarter alone, Apple shipped 35.1 million iPhones, helping to propel the company to the 250 million milestone that Strategy Analytics believes the company has crossed ahead of the iPhone's five-year anniversary. In its last quarterly earnings conference call, Apple executives announced that more than 360 million iOS devices, including the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, had been sold to date.

These are siblings developing games and apps.

When brothers 12-year-old Shravan Kumaran and 10-year-old Sanjay Kumaran registered their own company in December 2011, little did they know that they would become the youngest entrepreneurs in the world. Nor did their parents.

"We wanted our own company to showcase our products. I have always been telling my father that I would like to start my own company. Then, we developed the game "Catch me, cop" and before submitting it at the App store, we started "

Go Dimensions", says Sanjay.

The new webmail service integrates the firm's Skype video chat functionsContinue reading the main story

Related Stories

Microsoft is overhauling its free webmail service, dropping the Hotmail brand it has used since acquiring the product in 1998, and adopting the name Outlook.com.

The revamped service will help sort messages as they arrive and allow users to make internet calls on Skype.

It said the move would help tackle the problem of "cluttered" inboxes.

The action may also be designed to win over users of Google's rival Gmail service.

Microsoft said that in many cases email had become a "chore" because its users accounts had become "overloaded" with material.

Its solution is to automatically sort messages into different areas to distinguish between emails from contacts, newsletters, package delivery notices, social network posts and other identifiers determined by the account holder.

In addition it is taking steps to link the Outlook account with other services the user might have subscribed to.

"We are giving you the first email service that is connected to Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google, and soon, Skype, to bring relevant context and communications to your email," the firm's Chris Jones said on its blog.

"In the Outlook.com inbox, your personal email comes alive with photos of your friends, recent status updates and tweets that your friend has shared with you, the ability to chat and video call - all powered by an always up-to-date contact list that is connected to your social networks."

Targeting Google

In what may be perceived as a dig at Google, Mr Jones added that the firm would not scan email content or attachments in order to sell the information to advertisers or others.

_61939959_cute.jpg

Large photos and video can be sent via the firm's Skydrive service avoiding attachment size limits

He also announced that web versions of the firm's Office apps were built-in, potentially helping it counter competition from other web-based application suits such as Google Docs and Zoho Docs.

Outlook.com also links up with Microsoft's Skydrive cloud storage, allowing users to send photos and other documents via the service to avoid the risk of going over their attachment size limit.

This could pose a threat to the rival Google Drive service as well as Dropbox, Sugarsync and others.

'Cleaned up'

Mr Jones said the firm had built a "brand new service from the ground up". But Matt Cain, an analyst at the tech consultants Gartner, played down the suggestion of a major leap forwards.

"Outlook.com represents reverse-consumerisation - taking a ubiquitous business tool and recrafting it for the consumer market," he told BBC.

"There really is no new technology here - the filtering tools have been around for some time as well as the social network integration.

"What is new is the cleaned up user interface, and the marketing spin, and the tight integration with office web apps and Skydrive, and the forthcoming integration with Skype."

Microsoft is offering the service in a "preview" mode for the time being and has not announced an official release date. While it advises users to upgrade, Hotmail subscribers can stick with the old system if they wish - at least for now.

Every Poor Family May Get A Mobile

Source

NEW DELHI: In what could turn out to be its calling card for the 2014 general elections, the government is finalizing a Rs 7,000 crore scheme to give one mobile phone to every family living below the poverty line.

Sources in the PMO said the scheme—Har Hath Mein Phone—expected to be announced by PM Manmohan Singh on August 15, will not only aim to give away mobiles to around six million BPL households, but also provide 200 minutes of free local talk time.

Top government managers involved in formulating the scheme want to sell it as a major empowerment initiative of the UPA 2. While the move will ensure contact with the beneficiaries of welfare programmes worth thousands of crores, there is also a view the scheme will provide an opportunity for the UPA to open a direct line of communication with a sizable population that plays an active role in polls.

The scheme may be funded from the telecom department's universal service obligation (USO) funds. According to a source, 50% of the cost is likely to come from the bidder who gets the right to provide the service and the remaining from the USO fund. The fund is meant to be used to meet USO aims by providing access to phone services to people in rural and remote areas at affordable prices. The resources for its implementation are raised through a service levy fixed at 5% of the adjusted gross revenue of all telecom service providers except the pure value added service providers like internet, voice mail, email etc.

According to estimates, the scheme will involve a monthly expenditure of Rs 100 per cellphone. The government is also exploring the possibility of getting service charges subsidized through competitive bidding.

The PMO is directly involved with the Planning Commission and telecom ministry in giving a final shape to the scheme. The government has already launched a national infrastructure initiative under the PM's advisor Sam Pitroda that aims to link 2,50,000 panchayats across the country within 16 months through internet so that basic communication facilities can be provided to the rural masses.

Jokes apart, what will those poor people living in REALLY remote villages do, with NO network coverage???

Since this is Congress' plan, I am sure they are readying for yet another biggest scam ever made...

This is another instance of our useless govt being blissfully unaware of the needs of the common man. There is wholescale drought in the country and people are losing their harvests.at such time, is a mobile phone the most needed thing? I mean you don't even have to be a genius to figure this $hit out. Just use your common sense. It's so frustrating to live in a country like it's.

On an unrelated note, north Korea, where is wide spread starvation and people don't get proper food, has won 4 golds medals at this Olympics.whereas we,a so called emerging super power have failed to win a single gold.

Govt bans bulk SMSs, MMSs for 15 days across the country

Source

NEW DELHI: To check spread of rumours which has led to exodus of northeast people from certain states, government has banned bulk SMSs and MMSs for 15 days across the country starting Friday.

"We have banned bulk SMSs and MMSs for 15 days," Union home secretary R K Singh said.

The decision was taken after reports of widespread circulation of SMSs and MMSs containing misleading information about Assam violence, threats to people of northeastern origin living in other parts of the country and doctored videos.

The home ministry has asked department of telecommunications to implement the order through the telecom operators.

From Friday onwards, no one will be able to send more than 5 SMSs in one go and more than 20 KB of data through mobile phones during the ban period.
