Google to Unveil Samsung Nexus 10 with Android 4.2 on October 29

Source

October 22, 2012, (Sawfnews.com) - Google will unveil the Samsung Nexus 10 at the company event in New York City on October 29, along with some other products based on Google technology.

A source told the website The Next Web that the Nexus 10 features on an internal video recorded at one of Google's weekly all-hands "TGIF" meetings that details the company's October 29 product launch plans.

Developed under the codename Manta, the Nexus 10 will feature a 10.1-inch, 2560 × 1600 (299 ppi) display, an improvement over iPad's 264 ppi. It will be powered by Android 4.2, which will retain its Jelly Bean branding, and not be named Key Lime Pie as earlier speculated.

Amidst the new features being introduced with Android 4.2 is support for multiple accounts to allow sharing of the device, with each account limited to its individual content. A 'Content in the Center' widget would allow users to access Google Play.

There is also support for portrait orientation panorama mode for the camera.

It was earlier reported that Nexus 10 will feature an Exynos 5 ARM Cortex-A15 from Samsung and a 5 MP camera.

The internal video additionally confirms rumored Google plans to launch a 32GB variant of the Nexus 7 (Wi-Fi only version and Wi-Fi + 3G versions) and the LG Nexus 4 smartphone.

The Nexus 4 is powered by a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon processor, 2GB RAM, and Android 4.2.

It's features include a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768 display, 16GB storage, 8 MP main and 1.3 MP front-facing cameras, and a 2100mAh battery.

License issue of Sistema Shyam Teleservices has taken to international level, as Russia warned to go for international arbitration in case Indian courts do not resolve Sistema’s licenses. Alexander Kadakin, Russian Ambassador in a cultural event in New Delhi said, “If the issue of cancellation of 2G licence to Sistema is not resolved in Indian courts, we will go for international arbitration,”

MTS-India-300x132.png

The Supreme Court of India cancelled all licenses issued on or after January 10, 2008 on the ground of irregularities during spectrum sale. This verdict affected 21 of 22 licenses of SSTL (Sistema Shyam Teleservices), which operates under MTS India brand. The company has submitted a petition with the apex court seeking a review of the decision to cancel licences and also decided not to participate in the upcoming 2G spectrum auction. Sistema’s point of view is they applied for CDMA spectrum on 800 MHz band where there is no demand, while other players went for GSM 1800 MHz band.

Till date Sistema, who owns 56.68% of the company, invested $3.1 billion in this Indian telecom venture. Russia previously asserted it will not allow this huge investment go waster for internal problems in the country. Russia Govt. holds 17.14% shares in SSTL and is very unhappy on this issue, said that “great repercussion” of this issue will affect not only on Indo-Russian bilateral cooperation but also for its foreign investments in India.

There are also reports that the Department of Telecom (DoT) is going to support the curative petition filed by Sistema in the Supreme Court challenging cancellation of its licenses in 21 circles.

Kasab down with dengue, mosquito hailed!

Source Despondent Correspondent

MUMBAI: Biryani-loving Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab is said to be suffering from high-grade fever after being allegedly bitten by a mosquito. Sources say an inquiry has been ordered into how the mosquito managed to infiltrate the high-security prison.

However, the actions of the brave Aedes mosquito are being hailed all over the country. "Perhaps this mosquito may have done what the Indian government and judicial system have failed to do," an elated Mumbai resident said.

Some citizens wanted to arrange a felicitation ceremony for the brave mosquito but the mosquito is not answering his phone. Others were concerned for its health considering the quality of blood it may have ingested.

The Maharashtra government has announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh for the mosquito along with a flat in Adarsh building and a plot of "farming land" in Pune. The railways is ready to provide it a job.

The Pakistani terrorist is currently lodged in a bomb-proof, egg-shaped cell at the jail since his arrest. His prison may even have inspired Lady Gaga's performance of "Born this way", an expert said.

Unfortunately, the mosquito itself is incommunicado. Jail sources say his brazen attack took everyone by surprise and it could even have been a fidayeen.

"It was a precision air strike. Before we could even react, the mosquito had carried out the sting operation and all we got was a vigorously scratching Kasab."

"Well, to itch his own," a jailer added. Some of the guards pretended to kill the insect but sources said they were just clapping.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has condemned this heinous act and demanded New Delhi take strict action against the outfit behind it. Islamabad summoned the Indian envoy to issue a demarche and is even willing to hand over Dawood Ibrahim in exchange for the mosquito.

Bharti Airtel Shuts Network To SMSes From Subscribers of Aircel & Reliance Communications

Source

NEW DELHI: Sparks are flying ahead of Diwali in India's telecom market after the country's largest mobile phone company, Bharti Airtel, closed its network to incoming text messages from subscribers of two other operators, Aircel and Reliance Communications.

Bharti Airtel executives said the company was forced to do this after the two companies started flooding its network with what they described as "free spam messages", a charge that has been vehemently denied by RCom and Aircel. "They (Aircel and RCom) are sending free SMS to our networks, which, in turn, is impacting the quality of service on our network and, therefore, the quality of service to our own customers," an Airtel spokesperson said.

Aircel and RCom, in turn, allege that Airtel was resorting to pressure tactics just days before Diwali to force them to pay more towards SMS termination charges. Executives of the two companies also accused Airtel, founded by billionaire Sunil Mittal, of abusing its dominant position.

"The timing of this step on the eve of Diwali reflects Bharti's blatant disregard for the interests of millions of customers and is another instance of abuse of market position by Bharti," an RCOM spokesperson said.

RCom, the second-largest mobile phone operator by users offering services on both GSM and CDMA technology platforms, also slammed Bharti for "unilaterally taking this coercive action on an issue that was sub judice before Supreme Court and was also under consideration by sector regulator Trai". But, an executive close to Airtel defended the company's move saying "allowing any misuse of our (Airtel's) network would compromise the quality of service for our own customers during the festival season".

Companies may take dispute to court

"Bharti Airtel has asked us to sign a bilateral interconnect agreement, which says 10 paise per SMS will be charged to a non-Airtel customer. We are resisting this as the cost for our customers would go up significantly," the Aircel spokesperson said.

The two companies may take the matter to court this week. The issue dates back to November 2011, when Airtel demanded that Aircel, which is majority-owned by Malaysia's Maxis, pay 10 paise for every text message terminating on its network. Subsequently, Airtel raised a bill of about 25 crore for the period from April to October 2011.

In January, Airtel sent a notice asking Aircel to pay the amount by the end of that month. Aircel approached the telecom tribunal (TDSAT) claiming that the dues claimed by Airtel were "arbitrary, illegal, wrong, unilateral and without any basis". But, in September, the telecom tribunal ruled in favour of Airtel. Aircel has challenged the verdict in the Supreme Court.

Google integrates Google Drive with Gmail, now allows attachments as big as 10GB

Source

drive1.png

Google has integrated its new cloud storage service Google Drive with Gmail through which now users will be able to have attachments as big as 10GB. Previously, Gmail only allowed users to upload a maximum size of 25MB, so this new integration with Google Drive really propels the maximum attachment size. This is actually 400 times that of the current limit, and indeed is very handy to have.

So the way this works is pretty simple. Instead of downloading an enormous 10GB file, Google will upload all the data on the cloud and the recipients have to have access to the most up-to-date version. To start attaching instead of clicking the ‘paperclip’ button one just has to click on the ‘Drive’ icon.

Additionally, Google will be double-checking in the backend to keep a track so that the recipients are receiving access to the sent files. This works like Gmail’s forgotten attachment detector. Google is currently in the process of rolling out this new feature and it is only available through the new Gmail compose experience so one has to opt in for that to have access to the Drive integration.

Dolby introduces The First Atmos Object Oriented Sound Theater in India

Source

282dgmh.jpg

Dolby has partnered with Sathyam cinemas in Chennai to launch the first Dolby Atmos technology enabled theater in India. The Sathyam Serene in Chennai becomes the first theater in India to be equipped with Dolby’s new object oriented sound technology. Along with this, Sivaji 3D becomes the first Indian movie to have its audio mastered with Dolby’s new technology. While no changes were made to original film, the audio was re-mastered in Dolby Atmos.

Dolby calls Atmos a new audio platform, which is wildly different from the traditional surround sound setup consumers are used to. The idea is to provide a more realistic and natural sound experience. Object oriented sound goes well beyond the traditional channel based sound by creating points of objects in the sound field that can controlled independently rather than having an entire channel with a particular sound.

Apart from giving more control to the content creator, Atmos allows for overhead speakers creating a more realistic sound field. Additionally there can be up to 64 speakers that are controlled individually.

Rumor: Facebook in Talks to Acquire WhatsApp Messenger

Source

Facebook is reportedly in talks to acquire multi-platform messaging app WhatsApp, according to TechCrunch.

Citing sources close to the matter, the site reported yesterday that the deal could help further Facebook's already grand mobile standing, as well as push the social network further into international markets.

A Facebook spokeswoman declined to comment on rumor and speculation.

During a post-IPO appearance at TechCrunch Disrupt in September, Zuckerberg said the company's efforts on mobile will likely help bolster Facebook in the years to come. "I think it's easy for a lot of folks ... to really underestimate how fundamentally good mobile is for us," Zuckerberg said at the time.

By mid-August, WhatsApp hit a new daily record of 10 billion total messages a day — 4 billion inbound and 6 billion outbound. That was up from 1 billion at the end of October 2011. "Just how much is 1 billion messages?" the company wrote in a blog post. "That is 41,666,667 messages an hour, 694,444 messages a minute, and 11,574 messages a second."

WhatsApp is available to owners of Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Nokia S40, Symbian, and Windows Phone devices. The 99-cent app allows users to exchange messages without a paid SMS plan, by using the same data plan on which emails and Web browsing run.

The app's founders proudly stand behind the decision to not sell in-app ads, which TechCrunch said could be a selling point during acquisition talks, thanks to Facebook's recent move to feature more prominent advertising.

According to the site, terms of the alleged agreement and other details have not been revealed. WhatsApp did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

Whatsapp is available for download via various app stores, or through the start-up's website.

iPhone infringes on patents from MobileMedia, jury rules

Source

Ruling finds that Apple violated three patents from MobileMedia, a holding company jointly owned by Sony, Nokia, and MPEG LA.

Apple has lost a few rounds in a courtroom case pitting it against patent holder MobileMedia.

A U.S. court ruled today that the iPhone infringes on three patents held by MobileMedia, a spokesperson for the patent holder told CNET.

One of the patents, No. 6,427,078, refers to a camera phone technology, according to the spokesperson. The other two patents, No. 6,253,075 and No. 6,070,068, deal with call handling.

A document of the verdict posted on Scribd shows the jury found that Apple directly infringed on the three patents in question. The jury also ruled against Apple's attempt to have the patent claims rendered invalid.

The jury trial kicked off just last month in a case in which Apple was accused of violating patents held by MobileMedia, a company jointly owned by Sony, Nokia, and a Denver-based outfit called MPEG LA, which licenses patents for the MPEG standards.

MobileMedia holds about 300 patents, mostly from Sony and Nokia, that can apply to just about any electronic device, including smartphones, PCs, cameras, and game consoles. The company launched its suit against Apple in July 2010, alleging that 18 of its patents were violated.

This was not expected. Apple is cutting iPhone 5 components order. It seems that weak economy across the world is hurting the co.

Source

Apple reportedly cuts iPhone screen orders on weak demand

The Cupertino-based tech giant cut orders of the iPhone 5 screens by roughly 50 percent last month, a possible sign of sagging demand, sources tell the Wall Street Journal.

Apple is reportedly dialing down its iPhone component orders, a possible sign that demand for the smartphone is not quite what Apple expected.

Apple cut its orders last month for iPhone 5 screens for the first quarter of the 2013 calendar year by roughly half its original target, sources tell The Wall Street Journal. The Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant also reportedly trimmed orders for other screen sizes as well.

CNET has contacted Apple for comment and will update this report when we learn more.

The report appears to support the forecast of at least one analyst, who predicted last month that Apple would face challenges selling its iPhone and iPad. In December, UBS analyst Steven Milunovich slashed his iPhone sales estimates for the March, June, and September 2013 quarters by 5 million units each quarter, while sales estimates for the iPad were cut by 2 million per quarter.

Milunovich also trimmed his earnings estimates for Apple for fiscal 2013 and 2014 and lowered the stock's target price to $700 from $780. Apple is expected to announce its fiscal first-quarter financial results on January 23.

Once the dominant smartphone and tablet seller, Apple has faced challenges on both fronts. The iPad's market share has been sliced by lower-priced Android tablets, while the Galaxy S lineup of smartphones recently edge out the iPhone for the smartphone market crown.

Subsidised Yearly LPG Cap Raised To 9 Cylinders

NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday raised the annual cap on supply of cheap cooking gas to nine cylinders from six.

The new cap on cooking gas would come into effect from April 1, oil minister M Veerappa Moily said after the meeting of the Cabinet's panel on political affairs that took the decisions.

As a fallout of the higher cap, the consumers would now be able to avail five cheap cylinders between September 14 last year, when the cap was imposed, and March 31 this year. This level was earlier set at three cylinders during the period.

Cabinet approves halving CDMA airwave auction price

http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/cabinet-approves-halving-cdma-airwave-auction-price_809182.html

The cabinet approved a 50 percent cut in the auction reserve price for airwaves used by phone carriers operating on the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology platform, said Manish Tewari, the minister of information and broadcasting.

The decision follows a recommendation by a panel of ministers to cut the price by 30 percent or 50 percent, after the government did not find any taker for the airwaves in a November auction, with carriers complaining the price was too high.

Bottlenecks prevails for M&A; telecom tariff may rise: UBS

The government had earlier set the reserve price of CDMA airwaves at Rs 3640 crore per megahertz of spectrum in all of India's 22 telecommunication zones, which was 30 percent higher than the minimum auction price for airwaves used by operators on the popular GSM platform.

The government plans to conduct the next airwave auction in March. The auction is crucial for the Indian mobile phone unit of Russia's Sistema , which has been ordered by the Supreme Court to shut operations in all but one of the country's 22 telecommunications zones.

Google Declares War on the Password
USB_token11.jpg
Want an easier way to log into your Gmail account? How about a quick tap on your computer with the ring on your finger?
This may be closer than you think. Google’s security team outlines this sort of ring-finger authentication in a new research paper, set to be published late this month in the engineering journal IEEE Security & Privacy Magazine. In it, Google Vice President of Security Eric Grosse and Engineer Mayank Upadhyay outline all sorts of ways they think people could wind up logging into websites in the future — and it’s about time.
2012 may have been the year that the password broke. It seemed like everyone on the internet received spam e-mail or desperate pleas for cash — the so-called “Mugged in London” scam — from the e-mail accounts of people who had been hacked. And Wired’s own Mat Honan showed everyone just how damaging a hack can be.
The guys who hacked Honan last August deleted his Gmail account. They took over his Twitter handle and posted racist messages. And they remote-wiped his iPhone, iPad, and laptop computer, deleting a year’s worth of e-mails and photographs. In short, they erased his digital life.
Passwords are a cheap and easy way to authenticate web surfers, but they’re not secure enough for today’s internet, and they never will be.

Google agrees. “Along with many in the industry, we feel passwords and simple bearer tokens such as cookies are no longer sufficient to keep users safe,” Grosse and Upadhyay write in their paper.

Thus, they’re experimenting with new ways to replace the password, including a tiny Yubico cryptographic card that — when slid into a USB (Universal Serial Bus) reader — can automatically log a web surfer into Google. They’ve had to modify Google’s web browser to work with these cards, but there’s no software download and once the browser support is there, they’re easy to use. You log into the website, plug in the USB stick and then register it with a single mouse click.

They see a future where you authenticate one device — your smartphone or something like a Yubico key — and then use that almost like a car key, to fire up your web mail and online accounts.

In the future, they’d like things to get even easier, perhaps connecting to the computer via wireless technology.

“We’d like your smartphone or smartcard-embedded finger ring to authorize a new computer via a tap on the computer, even in situations in which your phone might be without cellular connectivity,” the Googlers write.

The future may not exactly be password-free, but it will at be least free of those complex, hard-to-remember passwords, says Grosse. “We’ll have to have some form of screen unlock, maybe passwords but maybe something else,” he says, “but the primary authenticator will be a token like this or some equivalent piece of hardware.”

That means that if someone steals your card or your smart-ring, you’d better report it stolen pretty quickly.

Grosse and Upadhyay believe that once enough websites support this device-centric login technique, people mostly won’t need strong passwords, except in rare occasions — when they’re making significant changes to their account, for example.

But for Google’s password-liberation plan to really take off, they’re going to need other websites to play ball. “Others have tried similar approaches but achieved little success in the consumer world,” they write. “Although we recognize that our initiative will likewise remain speculative until we’ve proven large scale acceptance, we’re eager to test it with other websites.”

Sources: www.wired.com Times of India Hindustan Times

Looks like it is time to forget remembering passwords and start wearing wedding rings again!

Regards

Rahul
