Internationally, the largest user base of Whatsapp is in India. So they will definitely give some benefit to Indians.

I don;t agree with this 'poor payment gateway' reason.

Whatsapp knows about competition it faces and how easily users can switch over.

And Indians obsession with free ka maal and budget consciousness due to living standards and earning capacity. The moment they charge there will be another app which will offer it free. Then we already have to pay data charges.

Even if they choose to remain free, there has to be a way to commercialize India operations in the near future. If not continuous on-screen irritating ads, at least a banner when you say 'quit'.

Again, how close is competition to WhatsApp in terms of market share in India? The only app that's advertised well is the Bharti-group developed Hike app.

Whatsapp is free on Aircel and Rcom.

Airtel has Hike

Reliance Jio has its own Chat app.

Even MTS can offer Telegram, which is itself free. .

In the line LINE is there along with may others.

Competition is high, so Whatsapp remains free in India.
