An INSAT 4C from Indian soil

INSAT 4C, a satellite for television transmission, and the first launch that class of satellites from India said ISRO Chairman, Madhavan Nair. It will provide better transmission through Direct to Home (DTH) TV for viewers in India and 15th in the INSAT series. This satellite s scheduled to be launched in mid-July from Sriharikota. It is the first INSAT launch using the indigenous Geo-stationary Satellite Launch Vehicle. The spacecraft weighs around 2.2 tonnes and designed for a mission life of 10 years.

The INSAT 4C can provide services like Direct to Home television, Digital satellite news gathering, Digital picture transmission, Meterolgical imaging, Services for the National Informatics Centre.

which is little expensive

and they will provide set top box and dish @free

SET-Discovery announces sign-on to Dish TV

MUMBAI: It’s now official. The Sony-Discovery One Alliance today announced a distribution tie-up with India’s first direct-to-home service Dish TV to carry their channels.

The announcement confirms the exclusive report put out by Indiantelevision.com last week (7 June) that the two parties had arrived at a memorandum of understanding and the official signing would happen withinin the next few days.

The official signing of the deal means that all the channels from ‘TheOneAlliance’ bouquet - SET, MAX, Discovery Channel, Ten Sports, SAB, Discovery Travel & Living, AXN, Animax, MTV, PIX, Animal Planet and Nick - will be available on the Dish TV DTH platform by today. Currently, Dish TV carries more than 120 channels and is available across the country.

Commenting on the tie-up, SET India CEO SET-Discovery chairman Kunal Dasgupta said, “We expect significant growth in the subscriber base for Dish TV and for the DTH market in India due to this tie-up between SET Discovery and Dish TV."

“We welcome the SET Discovery channels on Dish TV. We have been growing at a healthy rate in the last year and the addition of ‘TheOneAlliance’ bouquet of channels will enable us to offer our customers a complete family package at affordable prices.” said Dish TV CEO Sunil Khanna.

Elaborating on the SET Discovery – Dish TV tie-up, Deepak Shourie, EVP & MD, Discovery Networks India and Director, SET Discovery said, "We are extremely pleased with this arrangement as we believe that it would enhance a Dish TV consumer's television viewing experience and take it to a new level."

i hve heard about them given free set-top boxes as a promotion in their first few weeks of operation!

bu never head about their pakages!! could u elaborate on the packages if u know the details am tooooo lazy to google right now :)

Sony takes Dishtv basic tier pricing up by Rs 38

Subahsh Chandra's Dishtv has increased the price of its basic tier of DTH service by Rs 38 after Sony-Discovery One Alliance came on board earlier this month.

The basic tier would now cost a consumer Rs 180, plus taxes. Earlier it was priced at Rs 142, exclusive of taxes.

The new pricing is a fair indicator as to the money that Dish TV is paying One Alliance for its channels per subscriber.

However, AXN has been kept out of the basic tier, which includes all the other One Alliance fare and the likes of Zee TV, HBO and three sports channels (ESPN, Star Sports and Ten Sports).

Dishtv's other packages include Dish Plus package, which comes packed with a wide selection of national and international channels at Rs 125 per month and offers channels like Zee Studio, HBO, TCM, MCM, Reality TV; Dish Bioscope, features Zee Premier, Zee Action, Zee Classic and Pakistani film channel Filmazia and costs Rs 55 per month. News is packaged in Dish News with Zee Business, Euro News, Euro Sports News, NDTV 24x7, CNBC TV18, Awaaz and CNN Headlines News. The cost: Rs 60 per month.

Dish Pick is an a-la-carte package that allows subscribers to pick and choose extra regional channels. Two channels come for Rs 30 per month, five channels for Rs 50 per month and all regional channels come for Rs 100 per month. (All the prices listed here are exclusive of taxes.) Channels included in this package include Zee TV, Sahara One Zee Punjabi, ETV- Rajastan, ETV - UP, ETV - Bihar, Geo TV, Zee Telugu, Jaya TV, Jeevan TV, Akash Bangla, Zee Bangla, Zee Gujarati and Marathi, India TV and NDTV India.

INSAT-4C satellite launch next month

India is set to break new ground in the space field in the second week of July with the first ever launch of an INSAT-class satellite, the heaviest to date, for commercial gains from home soil.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) officials are talking about a July 10-15 timeframe for the launch of INSAT-4C by a Geo-Synchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV) from the spaceport here, giving a boost to direct-to-home television broadcast.

It's for the first time that India's space agency is putting into space a two-tonne class satellite. Equipped with 12 high-powered Ku band transponders, the 2,180 kg spacecraft is designed for a mission life of 10 years.

"Preparations are on for the launch from the second launch pad," said M Annamalai, Director of Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR here on the east coast of Andhra Pradesh, about 80 km north of Chennai.

ISRO officials say launch from a home-grown rocket meant cutting launch costs by one-third -- if the same was to be launched from the spaceport of Kourou in French Guiana by an Ariane vehicle, India has to pay 30 to 35 per cent more.

INSAT-4C is also seen by analysts as another "cash-cow" for ISRO. All its transponders have been booked well in advance, including by the Sun TV. ISRO, headquartered here, is keen to ride the impending boom in the DTH services segment.

The 1,950-kg Edusat was the first INSAT-class satellite launched from home soil. Launched in September 2004, it was mainly intended to meet the demand for an interactive satellite-based distance education system. (Agencies)

Dishing Out Television!

It’s almost the beginning of July 2006. The Direct to Home (DTH) scene in India is getting ready for the mother-of-all battles. The Subhash Chandra owned Dish TV is going to have a competitor in the Rupert Murdoch backed TATASKY DTH platform soon. Though TATA owns seventy odd percent in the venture we all know where the technical expertise is going to come from.

Newscorp via STAR TV will no doubt be building a strong product for Indian households. Let us not forget that they own and operate BSKYB in the United Kingdom where they are almost considered untouchable in both quality of service and reach. DISH TV too is not sitting still. Only a few months from their launch, they started offering services like Movie On Demand and of course the more recent announcement of the inclusion of extra channels including SONY on their DTH platform.

STAR having stayed off the DISH TV platform with only STAR UTSAV making a token appearance, have made their intentions clear. This year promises to be an all out exciting one for television viewers in the country. Both the players are known to be aggressive. They are not going to pull any punches and surely aren’t taking any prisoners. When BSKYB launched to a lukewarm reception in the UK, SKY started giving the set top boxes free, they also bought all the exclusive football rights for an astronomical amount to bring in the viewers. Free set top boxes plus the only place to watch their football the Brits bought into BSKYB big time making it a thundering success. ZEE on the other hand back home is constantly updating their services portfolio. The latest addition to their list is Mobile DISH TV. Yes, that’s right you will be able to watch all their channels on the move in a car or a bus. They have a year’s head start over TATASKY and are looking to consolidate their lead.

TATASKY on the other hand has deep pockets and a vast library of content to dish out on their platform. It’s too early to tell who will win this fight but signals are out there that the fight will be long and fought hard. Especially now since SONY has joined DISH TV the lines are drawn. Like I mentioned some time back, people do want all the goodies that a DTH service brings but how many will want two different boxes at home is the question? Maybe it will lead to the mother-of-all mergers…the TATASKYDISH TV Network!

TDSAT refuses to restrain Star on distributing DTH signals

: Broadcast tribunal TDSAT on Tuesday, rejected the petition of ASC Enterprises, seeking to restrain Star from giving its signals to any other DTH operator, and said it will pass a final order on the matter in the next 8-10 days.

"It would not be in consumers' interest for us to prevent the entry of a new DTH service on the basis of mere apprehensions," a TDSAT bench said, hearing the petition of ASC Enterprises, which runs DTH services under the Dish TV brand.

Rejecting as "highly exaggerated" ASC Enterprises' apprehensions that Star might pass on the signals to its own DTH service due for launch soon, TDSAT said there was "no prima facie case" for issuing any restraint order.

"... In our view, even if a third party were to launch a new DTH service, which includes the signals of the respondent (Star), it will take some time for it to establish itself in the market."

However, to the relief of the petitioner, it pointed out that the licence agreement for DTH clearly states that a DTH operator cannot carry the signals of a broadcaster, who has "refused access on a non-discriminatory basis to any other DTH operator."

Interestingly, Star had filed an undertaking before TDSAT last month that it would not be sharing its content with any DTH operator till July 3, a date which expired on Monday.

ASC prayed to the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal to continue the undertaking till the matter is disposed, as it may hit its commercial interests.

Meanwhile, appearing before the tribunal Tata, the majority holder in the prposed DTH joint venture between it and Star, contended that it has invested heavily and would suffer losses if not given permission to launch the service.

Tata Sky earmarks Rs 1.5 billion for marketing of service

Tata Sky, an 80:20 direct-to-home (DTH) joint venture between the Tatas and Star Group, is moving ahead step by step towards a launch, the date for which is still being closely guarded by the company.

While most of the money is now riding on an August-September commercial kick-off, the latest on the Tata Sky front is that it has earmarked approximately Rs 1.5 billion for marketing the DTH service across all platforms, traditional and non-traditional. From pilot MDU (multi-dwelling unit) projects in some cities of India to educating an average Indian about the advantages of a DTH service supported by the Tatas and Star, the game plan covers the full gamut.

Tata Sky sources reveal that a major part of the Rs 1.5 billion marketing budget is likely to be spent during the festival season in India, starting late September and lasting till Christmas-New Year, when consumers have a tendency to splurge on goodies.

Meanwhile, apart from Zee Turner family of channels, most other major TV channels are almost sure of finding a berth on the Tata Sky platform from day one of launch. Apart from the news channels, the likes of Times Now and Disney are already part of the test signals, people in the know say.

It needs noting however, that except for ESPN Star Sports, no other broadcaster (and that includes the Star Network channels) have signed commercial agreements wth Tata Sky as yet.

ESPN Star Sports, a joint venture between Disney and News Corp in Asia managing the two sports channels, have also to take a call on whether to bring in a new interactive sports channel, or confine the interactive aspects to the two existing channels. "We are still weighing all options," a Singapore-based source in ESS said.

Zee channels' appearance on Tata Sky, meanwhile, would depend on how soon (or how late) Star comes to an agreement with Dish TV, now that Discovery-Sony One Alliance has come aboard country's first DTH platform.

Broadcast disputes tribunal TDSAT has directed Star India to make available all its channels to Subhash Chandra's DTH service, Dish TV.

In an order passed this morning, TDSAT, while directing the sector regulator to set a benchmark for channel prices for DTH services, said that Star channels should be available to Dish TV at half the price at which they are available to cable operators.

The reason for this, according to TDSAT, is that DTH is an addressable system where loss of revenue down the value chain is negligible if not zero.

An interpretation of this observation on rates would mean that all Star channels (comprising bouquets 1 & 2) will cost Dish TV Rs 27 as cable operators get the same for Rs 54 per month.

Star India was not available for comment till the time of writing this report.

Chandra's ASC Enterprises, which holds a DTH licence, had moved TDSAT alleging that Star India was delaying making available its channels in breach of a regulatory order that states all content should be made available to all platform on a non-discriminatory basis.

STAR TV India to move SC against TDSAT order

STAR TV India is all set to approach the Supreme Court against the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) order asking it to share its two-channel bouquets comprising 14 channels to ZEE-group’s Dish TV, India’s first direct-to-home service.

The main bone of contention for STAR pertains to two specific points. One, on the pricing of its channel bouquet, and two, on the absence of minimum guarantee clause in the TDSAT order, informed sources told FE. STAR had pleaded that channels must be shared only with those platforms that have a minimum of five lakh subscribers.

“It appears to us that there may be some specific areas within the judgment that will require further clarification. Our intention is to seek clarification on these areas at the earliest opportunity and make a response accordingly,” Star officials said while responding to the order.

TDSAT in its order said that as DTH is an addressable system; the revenue loss is minimal. TDSAT directed STAR to provide its channels to Dish TV at Rs 27, which is half the rate it charges from cable operators. “Both, on pricing of its channels and the minimum guarantee clause, STAR is likely to ask for attention of the Supreme Court,” sources added. The TDSAT order, if un-challenged, will have a far-reaching impact on all future addressable systems of broadcast, including the conditional access system (CAS) and IPTV. The tribunal has based the pricing of bouquets stating that under addressable systems like DTH, “exact number of subscribers are transparently known and paid for.”

“In all future addressable systems like CAS or IPTV, the pricing for bouquet per subscriber will go down by 50% with everyone quoting this particular TDSAT order as a reference case. This will have a bearing on leading broadcasters like Star, Sony and Zee, as their current business negotiations are on the strength of their share in cable and satellite business,” sources added. While highlighting STAR India’s plea on commercial negotiations with ZEE, TDSAT pointed out that Star had itself proposed a 75% reduction in rates of cable as a “rational and fair approach” since there is under-declaration in the cable platform.

Tata-Sky approaches TDSAT against Zee over bouquet pricing

There seems to be no end to the thrust and parry going on over the DTH airwaves. Close on the heels of Dish TV wresting a favourable decision against Star India, Tata Sky has moved the Telecom Disputes Settlement And Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) --- against what it terms as Zee's exhorbitatnt terms for providing its network channels to its still-in-the-pipeline DTH service.

The petition by Tata Sky before the appellate tribunal makes Zee Turner Ltd, Zee Telefilms Ltd,Turner International India and Dish's managing company ASC Enterprises LTD as party to the case.

The Tata Sky petition alleges that the Zee Group has denied supply of Zee Turner bouquet of channels to the former's yet-to-be-launched DTH service under reasonable terms.

The petitioner has sought "to obtain appropriate direction for the signals of the channels," alleging that respondent Zee Turner has quoted unreasonable terms for supply of its signals to Tata Sky.

Contacted by Indiantelevision.com, a senior executive at Dish TV today refrained from commenting on the issue, saying, “We have yet not received any direction from TDSAT.”

The disputes tribunal has given the respondents three days from the day they receive an official intimation to file its replies.The next date of hearing is 25 July 2006.

As per regulatory norms, all content should be made available to all delivery platforms on a non-discriminatory basis.

Last week, the tribunal had delivered a verdict laying down benchmark rate for channel prices for DTH platforms, while directing Star to make available its channels to Dish TV.

Main respondent Zee Turner is a 74:26 distribution joint venture between Zee Telefilms and Time Warner company Turner International India.

The cable pricing of the two Zee-Turner bouquets is Rs 83.65 plus service tax. Zee-Turner's bouquet one comprises Zee TV, Zee Cinema, Zee Movies, Zee English, CNN, Cartoon Network, CNBC, Trendz, Reality TV, Zee Marathi, Zee Punjabi, Zee Bangla and Zee Gujarati and is priced at Rs 58.85 per subscriber/per month. The second bouquet carries HBO, Vh1, Pogo, Zee Business and Awaaz, which is available at Rs 25 per subscriber/per month.

Tata Sky's complaint before TDSAT is that Zee is seeking the same pricing terms for supplying its channels to its DTH service as is its cable rates.

In what manner TDSAT responds to the Tata Sky complaint will be watched with close interest. After all, in its earlier order in favour of Dish TV, TDSAT, while directing the sector regulator to set a benchmark for channel prices for DTH services, said that Star channels should be made available to Dish TV at half the price at which they are available to cable operators.

The tribunal's reasoning in the earlier case was that DTH is an addressable system where loss of revenue down the value chain is negligible, if not zero.

Dish TV moves Supreme Court over Star channels' pricing

The country's only private direct-to-home operator Dish TV has moved the Supreme Court seeking relief in regards to TDSAT's (Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal) recent ruling that Star India will have to distribute the signals of all its channels at half the price at which they are available to cable operators.

Dish TV, in its petition filed yesterday before the apex court, has sought further modifications in the price rate for accessing Star channels.

The petition spells out that Dish TV is open to the offer that Star India had come up with in the year 2002 for all the Star channels. According to the Dish plea, the offer then was that all the Star channels will be made available to Dish TV subscribers at one-fourth the rate at which they are available to cable operators.

While issuing its order last Friday, TDSAT had said, "We have no basis to lay down the actual rates per channel, which we feel is the prerogative of Trai. However, to begin with, we feel that 50 per cent of the rates being charged for cable platform be made applicable to the DTH platform."

The ball is now in Star India's court on how to respond to this latest move by Subhash Chandra's network.

Many families use Doordarshan's DTH service in India. If you don't use it than u must not expect others also.

By the way, what's the problem with using Doordarshan's DTH. Its a good choice I think. Especially when these Cable Operators lines goes off.

I saw many families which are using it as an add-on to their Cable Connections.

Dish TV to offer gaming services

Dish TV is set to become the country’s first Direct-To-Home provider offering gaming services as a special feature on its set top boxes.

Promoted by Subhash Chandra owned-Essel Group, the private DTH player has tied up with US-based Open TV for transferring this technology at a consideration of $100 million over 5 years.

Playjam, a gaming product from the Open TV stable, would be rolled out by the end of this month.

“We are going to launch Playjam on our platform by the end of July. By 2007, we would have another gaming package. We are also looking to have a range of interactive content in movies, music and sports too”, said Jawahar Goel, business head, Dish TV.

The Rs 50 crore-Dish TV is looking to increase its revenues tenfold by 2012 and is looking at value added services (VAS) like interactive gaming, film and music content as major revenue drivers.

Though Dish TV would be the first to introduce (VAS), others like Tata Sky, Sun TV and Anil Dhirubhai Ambani DTH ventures, may follow suit as competition heats up, stated a media analyst.

Moreover, with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s regulations denying content exclusivity, providers would increasingly have to depend on VAS as an important differentiating factor.

“With the parity in content, DTH players would have to compete on the basis of price, brand, quality of service and VAS. It would be like the Telecom companies, all of which provide voice and text connectivity, but still compete and VAS is a crucial parameter”, commented Goel.
