MUMBAI: The churn in the Indian mobile handset industry continues unabated and if the latest industry figures are anything to go by, Finnish handset maker Nokia and Korean conglomerate Samsung have reasons to be worried.
Nokia's grip over the Indian market loosened further as its market share slid by another 5% in the July to September quarter, according to data by IDC, a market research agency, made available exclusively to TOI. It, however, remains the largest mobile handset brand with a 31.5% share in the Indian mobile phone market.
The big surprise, however, came in the form of Samsung, which vacated its number two slot in the market to littleknown Chinese brand—G'Five . While G'Five now has a 10.6% share, the Korean handset manufacturer on the other hand ended the September quarter with an 8.2% share.
In the quarter ended June, IDC had reported Nokia's market share at 36.3%, which the mobile handset maker had disputed. Nokia had then said that it did not agree with the methodology used by IDC to determine market share.
When contacted by TOI, Nokia said it is globally in its silent period prior to the 2010 results slated to be announced in January and would find it inappropriate to comment on market share estimates by external agencies.
The Finnish handset manufacturer, till a couple of years ago, dominated the Indian mobile handset market like a colossus with more than a 70% share. But off late, it has been hit at the bottom end by a swarm of new players such as Micromax, Spice and Lava. At the top end, its market has been encroached upon by the likes of Apple's iPhone and Blackberry.
These new players have been able to offer value-formoney products in the low and mid-market segments, backed by innovative models. Be it looks, styling, high-end applications—these brands have given consumers the option to go for feature-rich phones at very low price points targeting the semi-urban and rural population and that has taken away market shares from the well-entrenched players. For instance , the new entrants understood the Indian consumers' need for more battery life as well as the fact that lot of them needed to use two sim cards. Accordingly, they launched phones to meet such demands through inhouse R&D.
Samsung, however, sought to play down the latest IDC figures and said its market share has actually gone up according to IDC's rival research firm GfK- Nielsen's data. "As per GfK-Nielsen's data, we had 19.3% market share for the month of October. We strengthened our dual-SIM portfolio considerably and maintained our leadership in the touch screen segment with a 36% market share," a Samsung spokesman said in an email response when quizzed about the reasons for vacating its number two spot. While GfKNielsen reports monthly numbers IDC comes out with quarterly numbers.

The narrowband voice of public switched telephone network circuits operates between 300 Hz to 3.4 Khz. On the other hand, HD, or wideband, voice transmits a much wider spectrum, from 30 Hz to 7Khz
So it uses wider spectrum and hence more bandwidth
And, this greatly improved quality is accomplished without increasing capacity.
How is it possible? Do they use some kind of compression to reduce bandwidth?

With the kind of service these guys provide, They deserve it!!

Have seen most of the people playing downloaded 320 kbps mp3 on their home theater whether stereo or 5.1 surround.
Hardly 2-3% buy original music cd containing may be one good song for160
It makes no difference to them whether sound is better in Stereo or 5.1.!!
Same thing for Original 5.1 DVD. Not many buyers and almost none for English movies (500 upwards)
Most people use downloaded files or DVD from Roadside vendors. Again 5.1 makes no difference to them.
Still the same type of people will go ahead and buy good no. of costly home theaters in India. What a paradox!!
Though situation is somewhat better now with large scale DVD Libraries like Big Flix.
A very good article on the same topic.

Even Reliance is offering 20 minutes free talk time for submitting the documents. I got a SMS a few days ago.

The logo looks good. I did not like the advertisement though.

Finally!!. Hopefully they put a good person in his place who can take broadband to the next level.

They still cannot match MTS's 999 unlimited plan. Reliance used to be the first to lower tariff. Now they are followers and still can't match competition.

wow!! We already have 10 android phones under 20k. it is just matter of time before we get a few phones under 10k. Will accelerate android even faster.

Thanks for the data. +1. Even iOS has dropped, though not much. but from 3.5% to 25.5% for Android is amazing. I think Nokia should also start making Android phone. Nokia build quality + Android will be a killer combination for consumers. I guess they must be having some business reason for not adopting Android.

IMO the biggest advantage of LCD over the "well functioning CRT"
1) is aspect ratio (16:9)
2) LCD is thinner
3) Full HD support in LCD and hence better picture quality.
if these things don't bother you, stay with CRT.

This report appears incorrect. If it is true why don't we see so many people using data. i hardly know anybody around me who uses data. In fact most of the people use basic handsets and using email on those handsets is a pain.

MNP is postponed so many time now that, I will believe it when it is actually operational. Before that one never know they will come out with an excuse at last moment and postpone it again.

The only reason i am sticking to RCDMA is the 440 OnNet plan. Unfortunately no competitor is able to match that plan. If i get a similar plan in GSM , I will shift.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I will checkout all the models suggested in this thread. Just one more question, Since my printer usage will not be frequent, Will the inkjet printer give any problems?

Thanks for the reply. The Samsung Multi-in-one is good but is a bit pricy at 8.5k for my usage. How good is this one Canon PIXMA-MP287
The suggested retail price is4295/- and compared to LIDE 100 is only silghtly costlier and i am getting the printer function too.

I need some help in selecting a scanner/Printer for my home use. My main use is digitizing documents. Printer(only documents, No photo) is needed to be used very occasionally like once a week or even less. I can let go of printer option if the standalone scanner works out cheaper. I don't need the option of copier but won't mind if it is there. Appreciate any suggestions.

why not use truecrypt. It is free and reliable. It does not hide folders individually but encrypts them and put in a container effectively hiding the folders. You can create container folder and truecrypt will encypt and put all your files/folders there. The encrypted container can be launched as a new volume.

Broadband in India is defined as anything 256Kbps (Kilo bits per second). Lot of countries are moving towards 100MBps and Japan and Korea with Fibre to the Home (FTTH) (1G and 10G) are moving to even higher speeds we are still stuck at 256 Kbps and for higher speeds with ridiculous download limits.
TRAI had floated a consultation paper on broadband a while back. See here One of the questions in paper was
"Is present broadband definition too conservative to support bandwidth intensive applications? If so, what should be the minimum speed of broadband connection?"
I am quoting the final answer to this questions by top 3 ISPs. Sadly BSNL did not choose to comment on the paper.
"The authority should not change the existing speed of broadband services and keep 256 kbps unchanged for both wireline and wireless networks"
"it is recommended that the existing definition of broadband where the speed is 256 Kbps, should be replaced with at least 512 Kbps."
"Minimum defined speed does not deter the delivered speed and as proven internationally, players will offer speeds based on demand requirements and competition. Thus, there is no need to define a minimum speed criterion"
Unless TRAI forces the broadband speed to 4Mbps, we are stuck at 512Kpbs.

Even after registering for NDNC register i keep on getting SMS messages, even from my service provider Airtel. I have complained in the past to customer care. They are patient enough to take complaint but no follow up (in fining the guilty party). But it is definitely much better than before signing up for NDNC. i might have helped like 20 people sign up for NDNC. A lot of people don't know about NDNC although the procedure to sign up is really simple. I feel the National DO call registry is the way to go forward.

I wonder if this is this is a sign of merger between the groups?
