I am rather shocked. Is rimweb sort of a hostage to reliance interests? Is there an unofficial funding support to rimweb by reliance?

I don't why they don't start a data-based R-connect plan for prepaid They should something like Rs. 200/- (from talktime balance) for 100 MB per month. Many people are afraid of picking up postpaid R-connect, because things like BPP happen. Prepaid is the only way to put an upper limit on potential loss !! -- and Reliance also benefits: gets payment in advance, no question of defaults, no cost incurred in mailing bills, money collection through retail shops is cheaper than thru dedicated bill collection centers. The Zero rental plan s*cks. Even at 50 paise per min., it's too costly for low-cost users ... who don't want to download software, images, movies bla. bla. Just for checking emails (mostly text emails), and being online for a long time on yahoo messenger. Hardly any data usage. But Zero rental plan s*cks for such a user profile (I think is such user profile is quite common ... esp. people who are just able to buy a PC (maybe second hand, or a low-end PC -- under 15,000) .... and now don't expect them to pay 715 (650+ service tax) per month for just using Yahoo Messenger ??? They have already spent 15K, which is a huge investment for them. On the usage side, they don't need Rs. 715/- worth of downloads (= 1GB) !!! .. Just want to keep in touch with relatives, in India or overseas using Yahoo messenger. That's All. There should a low-cost, unlimited time, limited data PREPAID plan for them.

if the data cable is using the usb port .... then it could be possible. the usb port provides power supply to the run the plug-in attachments. the same power could be (maybe) used to charge the cell also.

yeah.. sms, again i never use .. so, didn't even know the character limit and all. but an additional input is this: my dad uses lg 2030 .. so i can compare the memory limit for saving videos ... it's higher in 5130 than 2030. If somebody has seen that long "Taal -- rules of life" clipping .. it can be saved on the 5130 itself (it downloads) .. but on 2030 ... it comes as "buffering" .. so u can view it only from the network only. -- I guess that Taal clip is atleast 1.5 minutes (maybe 2+ also .. didn't check). (That clip is no longer available on R-world .... it was, when everything was free)

See what sh*t he did with the 10,000 MW gas power plant at Dabri in UP. This is not the kind of execution reliance is known for. A minor pointer ... REL bid for EPC of a power plant for Haryana SEB. They have their pants wet right now ... since they quoted too cheap, relying on thier chinese supplier & joint-venture partner... who ditched them brutely. Now, they will have the execute the EPC contract themselves .. at a loss. This is not Reliance ... for sure.

Oh yeah .. I forgot the speaker phone ;-).. Yeah colored+speaker .... but both cater to R-world functionality only And to top even that both cater to .. .the VIDEO functionality (Aajtak, NDTV, CNBC), bollywood videos etc... For the pure textual data applications of R-world ... u don't really need the colors or the speaker ... so any R-world enabled B&W would also be fine. ... but then R-world enabled B&W doesn't come cheap either. LG 2030 itself maybe around 3000 bucks ... so why not go for 5130 with all the colors & the speaker ?? btw.. color sets maybe better for playing games (compared to b&w) .. but remember games are costly ... most are in pay-on-entry basis .. so about Rs. 2/- per entry. (Another thing is colored wall papers ... some are very good in color ... and atleast some good ones are under membership plan also) Future videos may also be paid (Sholay videos are about Rs. 7/- ... same I guess for Dhoom and all) ... but News videos (I expect) will be in Membership (Aajtak, CNBC).. or some Free too (IndiaTV news, NDTV). I won't quite advise you to buy a 3000 bucks B&W R-world enabled set, though ... 5130 is better, if you get it in just a 1000 bucks more.
-
I didn't know, that there was problem (of availability of data cables) for R-connect connectivity via 5130. (I don't use R-connect ... so I escape any hardship on that count). Yes, you don't have much option for a color handset around 4000. It's only 5130. Nokia's are no good because they don't carry R-world. And I can't think why anyone would buy a color handset if not for R-world. He would be better off with a good B&W handset. (Among those available, I would have bought LG 2230). LG 2230 is also looks fine ... but I don't like the design of Samsung sets (Slim or Boss). This review is based only on photos ;-) ... I don't know a thing about features. But if it's only for voice calls and SMS.. a 2000 rupee B&W set is great. So, indeed when you buy a 5130 .... make sure you understand, you are paying the extra 2000 bucks for R-world. I don't see any additional advantage in 5130 over a b&w set .. over and above the COLORED R-WORLD. That's it.

This is a very important question. Hope the kid who's just been handed over a prized asset ... and a huge responsibility ! has the balls to take it. True, you can't pass judgement on Anil, without giving him a chance .... and given the lack of any info on his competence. But that itself is somewhat worrisome, that Anil is yet show any meaningful achievement, so far in his life !! (do others disagee?). Putting together Infocomm was no mean task .... and so far, it's clearly been the icon of Mukesh's capabilities. (I am not counting the Jamnagar refinery .... which is the brightest jewel, because I am not sure, who made that refinery click .... it could be Dhirubhai himself ! or one of his kids .... but for lack info, I would give marks to none for the refinery). If Mukesh could do an Infocomm, he is capable of re-doing something like once again ... and maybe more. I hate to think, we need to try out an untested product (Anil) ... into something sooo.. important. Indeed Infcomm has the potential to outdo both the Jamnagar refinery, as well as RIL in totality. But only if Anil has the balls to do it !! Sadly, his past (especially, recent past) record is not reassuring. He seems to lack shrewdness, has some ego problems as well .... tends to dream in air, but isn't seen to be convert those dreams. How I wish, Anil proves me wrong

you spoilt my mood .... i feel looted for Rs. 1600

You should be able to get it for Rs. 4200/- or less. Though I am not sure, if Reliance webworld will give it to you at less than Rs. 4999/- (I got it from webworld for 4999, way back in sept '04). The other thing is reliance is offering rs. 1000/- free rim-2-rim talktime for all new phones bought. Not sure, if you'll get the 1000/- talktime if you don't buy from webworld. The best part of 5130 is the Color Screen + Speaker at a reasonable price. So, R-world videos look really good compared to any B&W set. I love my phone, even though I got it costlier at Rs. 4999/-

I started reading the thread from top .... hmm... from Manisha (oooh! damsel in distress !@##%$^^$ ;-) ). Next: IIT Kanpur .... how do these foolish girls manage to clear JEE !!! and can't fix the MMS Next: "yaar who khud se call cut dete hain" .... and I got to use my best IQ levels ... hell's it's some f**kker MANISH .. god knows what "aq" is .. huhhhhhhhhh

Yes, it's with the same set .... (including the good ole LG 2030, which everyone seem to be carrying around). This roaming is on a cdma network abroad. (spectrums are also same). Using the gsm network world wide for roaming needed a gsm compatible-set, even for cdma customers. (that option still exists .. and would be useful in countries, which don't have a cdma network at all)
-
use the non-metallic you have
-
CDMA is more spectrum efficient (not very sure of the tecnical reason behind it) .... but it means more people can talk using the same amount of spectrum. This has a very big economic consequence. CDMA operators can afford to have larger cells -- that is to say eg. a CDMA & GSM operator both have 2 Mhz of spectrum. A CDMA operator could support 1000 subscribers in a single cell with 2 Mhz, but a GSM guy could support only 500 with 2Mhz. So, the only alternative to GSM is to have 2 smaller cells and duplicated use of the same spectrum. It means, the GSM operator will have to invest in 2 BTS towers, where as only 1 tower for CDMA. While 1 CDMA tower is costlier than 1 GSM tower .... it's far lower than 2 GSM towers. So CDMA service become cheaper. (The other consequence is that CDMA operator can also go for smaller cells and duplicate use of spectrum .... with each cell supporting 1000 subscribers .... so total of 2000 subscribers can by supported by CDMA, where as only 1000 by GSM). Here the total cost to CDMA will be higher (since 2 CDMA towers cost more than 2 GSM towers) .. BUT again, the cost per subscriber will still be lower, since CDMA has 2000 subscribers ! CDMA is a later technology, while GSM is old. But upgraded GSM ... tries to use the better aspects of CDMA in the 3G implementation, where the name is also W-CDMA (though, it's really for GSM operators)

Also means, the 64 kbps connection my college had, meant only 8 kilobytes per second ... hell ... 8 kilobytes per second to be divided among say 40-50 simultaneous users !!! -- would mean 0.2 kilobytes per second !!!! No wonder, you'd need to come after a day to see, if the 100MB download happened or not ;-)
-
Wow ... this was interesting. I many times get 100 kilibytes per seconds ... so it means about 800 kbps (when compared to 256 kbps). We really work on real good BROADBAND Ok.. let's take a simple case, that we have only 3 people in my office ... all getting 800 kbps speed. Does it mean, my company has bought 800x3 = 2400 kbps i.e. 2.4Mbps speed. Second, any tricks, by which, I could pull more bandwidth on my computer than the other two guys (i.e. I want to have 2Mbps on my desktop, leaving behing only 400 kbps for the other 2 guys also using the LAN) ?
-
Now this beats me and I start thinking "is something wrong with the MS Excel loaded on my computer?" I did the following calculation using "Bill Gates" Excel: 85MB/256kbps = 332.03 seconds < 6 minutes. You should have taken only 6 minutes to download 85MB download .... why 44 minutes ... was the speed far less than 256kbps on an average (or should I sue Bill Gates for the mental agony caused to me due to errors in his product) ?

im surprised .... i would have thought the other way.... 32945[/snapback] redshift .. Hi ! .. so glad to see you among us, hale and hearty The concept is like this: if you have Radio Mirchi running at 93.6 FM ... you can't have another radio station using the "same" frequency. So probably, the second radio station could use the 95 FM frequency (95 FM, means 95 Megahertz or kilohertz, whatever ). You also need a buffer gap between 93.6 FM and 95 FM (because 95 FM would run in a band .... say 94.7 - 95.3 MHz) and you won't want interference in the signal. A cellphone is exactly a two way radio !! --- just that inplace of a dedicated frequency allotted to each set ... a specific frequency may be alloted to each mobile dynamically. So that, if you are not speaking on your mobile, you don't need a frequency, but when you do, you are alloted a frequency. NOW - THERE ARE LIMITED NO. OF FREQUENCIES AVAILABLE ... SAY 5 Mhz to 8 Mhz .... there is an upper limit on the no. of simultaneous people using these limited frequencies available. If cell companies sell more subscriptions than reasonable .... a lot of people will find all available frequencies busy and unable to talk. ... SO SO SO SO SO .... SPECTRUM IS A SCARE RESOURCE !!! -- but quite useful in providing low cost telecom connectivity.
-
I am not sure of the 75% number you mention (don't know what is the basis). But cost-wise it's the local loop which HELL costly in the telecom game. Reliance will have about 10,000 towers ... BSNL has atmost 30,000 local exchanges. No one really bothers about the cost of connecting 10,000 towers (which is equivalent of an exchange for mobile) ... or the cost to BSNL for connecting 30,000 exchanges WITH EACH OTHER. It's the cost of laying a copper cable : right from the exchange to the customer premises (this is called the local loop) ... A COMPLETE LOOP FROM AN EXCHANGE TO EACH SUBSCRIBER (.... this no an electricity line, where-in you bring one cable from the first house and keep hopping on to the next, and onto the next .... It's a full loop from the exchange to the subscriber for each subscriber). The wired local loop is believed to cost around 25,000 rupees on an average in India. If the local loop is replaced by a wireless loop .... the cost per head comes to around Rs. 5000/- (there is no cost in laying a cable from tower to subscribers .... but you would want to average out the cost of the mobile tower, over the no. of subscribers it can support). Wireless-in-local-loop is a gamechanger for boosting teledensity. Even BSNL is going a major way in using WLL for it's basic services in a lot of places. There is a natural constraint though ... Wireless local loop needs spectrum availability .... which is a natural constraint. There is no limit on the wires you can lay from exchange to subscriber .... but wireless local loop cannot be infinite

Well, reliance says 4 lac villages (out of total 6 lac villages in india) by dec. 2005 ..... and all urban agglomerations (5700) will be covered. Very likely the 2 lac villages left by reliance, will also have been left by cable tv guys too. A cable tv guy won't invest in the systems need to receive satellite phone .. if he is to service only one or two houses !!! & doesn't make sense to put up a mobile tower if only 1 or 2 people buy a mobile connection. In any case, cable tv is network is costlier anywhere (because it is a wired network) .... wireless system in local loop are WAY TOO CHEAP !!! A CDMA tower covers an area of 110 sqkm (about 12kms diameter circle) .... If one starts laying cable 12 kms long, cris-crossing the circle ... then good idea to start importing cables from MARS. There's isn't sufficient cable produced on earth
-
I agree with city02. Just I am not convinced about the economic viability of the cable-telephone option ... it'll surely need a set top box type of thing, which would cost around 1500-2000. If that's so, villagers can as well buy a mobile phone .... rentals are already rock bottom .... dirt cheap even for a huge majority of them. It's the handset-cost which is spoiling the party for mobiles in rural areas.

That is fine. I can reckon you are also from a very similar family, like mine (I too listened to "money saved is money earned" ... and honestly appreciate the thing). I also buy only Rs. 199/- voucher every month ... (currently pay Rs. 25 for rworld, but cautiously keep accumulating Rs. 25 for my talktime needs). ----- What is important is don't get the ethics wrong, with your misguided definition of "money saved" ... IT ALWAYS TURNS INTO "MONEY LOST" ... good ethics have a very important economic consequence: --> You could unplug a light bulb in your office, and put use it in your home. You SAVE the cost of the light bulb. Money saved is money earned. You could spend the money saved to a noble cause too... say "buy a book for your child" ... but see what could happen .... --> your company finds lots of bulbs being stolen and is compelled to SPEND money on lockable bulb cases (a good little capital little investment) ... and which was never needed ... just if WE ALL kept to our ethics. Things like this (aggregated) could affect the growth of your company and your salary / bonuses. SO THE MONEY WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO YOU AS BONUS, WENT INTO BUYING LOCKABLE BULB CASES. Did you save money or burn money? --------------------------------------------------------------- btw.. I also used to steal "light bulbs" from office / offcourse, regret it now ... needless to say, don't do it now. Do you fancy, Reliance could invest a lot of money in security softwares etc. to prevent the bill evasion on rworld .... due to increased investment, hike the rworld rates to RS 50/- .. or even RS 100/- per month (like hutch does). A lot of people who can currently afford rworld at rs. 25/- will have to quit the service .. Thanks to the non-productive investment in some security software, rather than a productive / useful application.

This is what we used to call "chillad-panti" ... just consider the "sophistication" of some one, who want to use R-surf !!! - and he wants to finds ways & means to avoice paying Rs. 3/- (for a day) .... or Rs. 25/- per month (i.e. around 80 paise per day) !!!! Could be ... i don't know ... but did our Dhirubhai also save 80 paise per day to build reliance ... fat chance - easier to slit some richie's throat at night and walk to with a couple of lacs in the night ... .rather than engineering ways to avoid paying 80 paise to our beloved infocomm
-
I have similar experience of loving my 5130, which i bought after using LG 2130 for about a year. R-world videos in 65K color and the speaker, look in an altogether different world from a b/w set .... you can compare a color handset (5130) to a color tv, but LG 2130 is far worse than a b/w tv .... u just can't use it for videos
-
fool ... you could've crashed the aeroplane
