  1. Leechers -

Maybe the title should be changed - Leechers to Freeloaders, to avoid any confusion with Torrents. Being a mod on another (motoring) forum I think I have some experience on this issue. As long as a newbie (I still consider myself to be a quasi-starter here) does not make too much of a nuisance of him/herself some naive sounding posts/queries are only to be expected and accepted. Only when they start talking on everything that issues crop up. I will suggest that a newbie stays quiet for some time, and after a while you can pickup threads where the gurus are in serious discussions (best watch and learn but no post) and others which may be more appropriate to your participation. Why watch and not post - try not to disturb the flow. If you have a query a PM may work better.
  2. Saw on the box that Haryana starts on the 1st of November, i.e. from Monday. Let us see. What will be critical is the speed and reliability of the 'look up'. Also, the modus operandi will some time to sort itself out. I am sure that while asking for minimum paper work for incoming numbers, the operators will do their best (or should it be worst!) to block those migrating out. Expect BSNL/MTNL to be the worst in either direction.
  3. Heard that MTNL is now delaying it. Apparently TRAI has 'ordered' that all must be online by December 20 (hopefully) 2010. Der aaye durust aaye. I will love to get rid of my BSNL pronto, and maybe think about Reliance later.
  4. The Commonwealth Games Mess

CWG is also CWS (commonwealth shame). Suggest new expansion of the Acronym ( as DMK is Delhi Money for Ka....). Got this poem today Baba Kalmadi Baba Kalmadi have u any Shame No Sir, No Sir, we r playing "Common loot game" Crores for my Partners, crores for the Dame Crores for me too, for putting India to Shame
  5. The Blackberry range offers an almost unlimited phonebook.
  6. Opinion Required For Buying Washing Machine

I have an LG for the past 8+ years. excellent. Total repairs - frotn door switch (once) and motor and bearings (once). Excellent service as well.
  7. Which Credit Card To Go For?

I have had StanChart cards for a very long time (15+ years) - but then I have been their customer (originally Grindlays) since 1979. I have moved through the 'ranks' and am now Visa Infinite with an MC Titanium to back it up. Throughout I have had my cards on '100% autodebit', no hassles. Had minor issues (about attempts to charge for an add-on card) twice which were promptly resolved. Now my children - (son and daughter-in-law and daughter with son-in-law on its way) also enjoy Infinite in their own right. I have been very happy with their service. Every major private bank provides you facilities and perks as per your relationship - both in terms of amount and duration. Most of them have codified it (at least internally).
  8. BlackBerry 9800 Torch (GSM) launched in US

Processor speed may be low but then the OS should be lean and mean. See Linux run rings around Windows even if running on so called obsolete computers.
  9. BlackBerry 9800 Torch (GSM) launched in US

Blackberry have apparently announced the Torch (9800?)on OS 6. This is a touch phone with a slide out keyboard (full QWERTY). There is a review in the latest T3 as well. There is even a report that a cracked Torch is available for Rs.34,000. Any news/rumours about its CDMA version.
  10. Question about Atom Based PC

I would definitely advise against the Atom. I do not even like Atom netbooks!
  11. Has anyone considered two points: 1. The terrorist is hardly likely to be carrying a Blackberry, and that too on BES. 2. It is the security of BB that prompts the corporate honchos to use it for secure communication. What is there to stop one from adding 128/256 bit encryption to the communications at either end. As for Skype, Google etc. I have a feeling that the old story of trying to stop VoIP is the underlying reason.
  12. Look at it this way. With 10 digits you will have 9,000,000,000 possible numbers (remember there will be no numbers of less that 10 digits. This should be enough to cover India. There should be no need for area specific numbers at all.
  13. As it stands we are on 10 digits - Delhi/Mumbai/bangalor etc. 2+8, Kanpur etc. 3+7, Smaller towns 4+6! So what is the sturm und drang all about?
  14. Reliance NetConnect 1X New Plans Launch

As suggested by Hitesh I think there is no point in discussing something which is no longer available. @konqueror: Look at No. 6 on http://www.rcom.co.in/Rcom/rworld/home/tariff.html along with No. 7
  15. Reliance NetConnect 1X New Plans Launch

@Greatest; I will try but need another option. See my second question please.
  16. If a shutdown takes effect, BlackBerry users in India would only be able to use the devices for phone calls and Internet browsing. (Arun) I thought sms (not BB messenger) should also work, as it is not encrypted in any way. As for 3G, Google, Skpte, etc. I thought we lived in a free society with some rights, or is it Big Brother of 1984 fame we are headed for.Maybe they are worried that they cannot eavesdrop on their political adversaries.
  17. Good news. But a lot will depend on whether dakshina has been paid in the right place(s). Fingers and toes crossed. I will dump BSNL as soon as MNP has stabilised.
  18. With FTAs coming thick and fast we are now in the habit of putting ever more non-tariff barriers. Mind you others do the same, but far fewer and more subtle. We want to sell under FTA but not buy! It is the same as appeal everything in courts, since otherwise who will answer audit.
  19. @Arun: Fingers and Toes crossed. I am dying to dump my BSNL and switch to one of the others (most probably Airtel or Vodaphone). Do not want to change my number.
  20. I am a long term mobile user (since 1999 on GSM, and since the original DAPO on CDMA). I have just acquired my first smart phone a Blackberry 8330 from Hitesh. He has been very supportive but I would like to learn on my own I have some queries. 1. What information resides on the phone and is not lost if the OS has to be reloaded? 2. What information comes as part of the OS and can be loaded/reloaded? Also, changes or is lost on a reload 3. What is the procedure for a. changing the splash screen from Verizon to Reliance, and b. Reloading the OS on a BB? I saw these once but have been unable to locate these again. Please either guide me to the exact thread(s), or give a beginners guide. 4. Software required for these and other operations. Please post or PM me. I could not find any place to post this, and I hope I am not in the wrong area. If so mods please move this topic to where it should belong.
  21. Thanks. But I am not a geek, so what you say is Greek to me!? Where does one get the vsm files (esp. pertaining to BB8330) and what is mfi and where do you get it. I recall seeing a post of yours about doing this on the 'worldphone'. I guess the same technique should work. Can you please provide a link as I was unable to find it. I have bbsak - Hitesh installed it for me when getting the phone up.
  22. Thanks parin. What I have is 4.5.0.175 on 3.4.0.55 and what I find is 4.5.0.172. I guess the difference is between Verizon and Reliance splash screens.
  23. @mufaddal: reassuring words indeed, esp. to the father of a brand new MCh! @parin this means the firmware which contains the identity information is either preserved or info restored from the backup sets this right (I guess from the OS area). @konquerror: UIM is the term used by Hitesh when he asked me to get info out of my 6275. He asked me to get the UIM and the MIN and send him the former. Then I was asked to program in the MDN and MIN. I did not find MIN and while on line with my son (has a Hero) was told it should be the same as SL_S. Worked! I am as lost as at the outset. I still want to remove the Verizon splash and replace with the Reliance Screen. Procedures for i. changing the UIM, ii. replacing the Verizon splash screen with Reliance (I have downloaded the set of files posted by Hitesh), and iii. reloading the OS. Also, I am told I have to make some change in case I decide to sell my 6275! What is needed?
  24. @parin: It still leaves me confused. Let me take an example : I have a BB with service no. (MDN) x, MIN (SL_S in BB parlance) y, and UIM ID as z. I have taken a backup, and then somewhere the phone is bricked. So how do I get it back in business? Another point: I know how to change the MDN and MIN but not UIM? I guess the latter is in the 'grey area', s maybe a PM will be the better way for that.
  25. @Genius: Am I right in assuming that the OS files are also overwritten when a backup is taken, even though by the looks of it they are in a different location. Thanks for the prompt response. I am trying t understand the game at large. It is too easy to get one of our resident guru's to come on and 'fix' the system.
