Thanks for the guidance. I tried the T+<Power> trick on my 551. Did not work. Have downloaded the terminal emulator. Will check it out. The connection is very slow here so will try from the office tomorrow.
I presume the terminal emulator will work on the Spic as well.

Watch out for Acer batteries. I have an Acer 3810T and the second battery ha just died on me (2 years). My son has the same and is currently on his fourth battery. A colleague has had a couple pack up as well. Acer said that the early batteries (pre Sept 2009) had problems, but after that it seems to be still there.

Thanks tarun_kabra & dipanlahiri. Tarun, it is rooted (see my original post). I managed to remove some of the Sprint stuff using Titanium. The system became unstable So had to 'recover' from Nandroid. Now as suggested by Dipan I will check on XDA.
I have run into two minor issues in my Galaxy 551 which I have rooted with Z4Root.
1. ROM Manager does not list the 551 as an option for Clockworkmod recovery.
2. How do I boot into nandroid from here. Vol Up+Down, Power with or without the home key does not seem to work.

I have an Epic 4G running Froyo (Stock EC05) which I have rooted (super one click + ROM Manager + Titanium Free). I have the following problems / queries:
1. How does one set up the unit for a proxy connection? Our wireless is working fine on direct connection, but due to a system glitch disconnects every 10 minutes or so. I want to switch over to operating through our proxy server. Cannot find anything on the phone for it. Help!
2. I tried a cold boot: <1> key + power. I got the downloading do not switch off message. Then I waited for over 10 minutes but nothing happened. So with great trepidation I pulled and reinserted the battery and then restarted, fortunately things were normal.
3. To be doubly sure I did a nandroid restore. Three finger salute got me into the menu. The restore went normally but the unit did not reboot - was just hanging. Battery out, battery in and restart. It went into nandroid and the on selecting happily rebooted from there. Is this normal. I had to reinstall Speedtest as it was hanging with a network error.
4. How do I remove the Sprint garbage which is part of the system?
I am new to Android (or smartphones in general) so please guide me.

It is a cracked set? After MEID registration you may be able to get EVDO. BIS/BES - forget it.
Remember, programming out the ESN is not easy. Once the MEID is registered, you can enter the AKey easily, but only after removing the ESN!

Will the same upgrade work with the Galaxy 551, which is essentially a Galaxy 3 clone with a keyboard!

The US has probably the highest fraction of their population working as lawyers, and Japan the lowest. Obviously one country is in the habit of sewing at the drop of a hat.
A lot of these suits are just for scaring the other chap (and others) with no real hope of success.

Is this an attempt at Hara Kiri. Totally blocking off old hardware is a non-starter. However, I am sure there will be cracks/workarounds very soon.

Thanks. So it will just be a pain. What about point 1 of my post - they want to block downloads with Custom ROMs which will be necessary with the Odin route.

Using the seciruty angle two things have happened:
1. Google is blocking music/movie access to phones with custom ROMs. This is from ZDNet.
2. Seems that Gingerbread will go all out to block rooting.

Now Sonia shows sympathy for Kani since she is a woman. So all female under-trials should demand release on bail. Then Gender Equality will have all males also demanding the same - so Raja, Kalmadi, and co. can all get out.

They are all the same. Do not forget that Airtel has supplied (or has been raided for) a significant part of the personnel to all of them, so habits die hard. It is not a matter of logic but of character!

Cloud computing will definitely help the corporates. Charge foe everything. Everytime you want o make a minor addition or change to a file - Bingo the cash register will run.

Anybody tried the 3500mA batteries on eBay (cart2india etc). These are Chinese and come with a replacement back cover (with a bulge).
With the original unit I left 3G on overnight and the charge dropped from 70% to a warning in about 10 hours.

I agree with sougatesc, did not find the sms option under settings on my Epic 4G either. May be this is removed in Froyo!

I am in the Kalyanpur area of Kanpur - both office (IIT) and residence are about 2km from the tower. For the past few days I am having a poor signal in both the locations - as per my epic 4G it is -106 or -101db at either location. Have not had any problem for the past five plus years.

My biggest crib is password ageing. What is so secure that you need this feature. All of a sudden you login at 1:00am and are forced to change your password in a hurry, which you may not remember the next morning.

aankush: Even if you are not a Reliance user as prices drop in one, others will be forced to follow suit, so all will benefit in the end.

This is what I get on the IITK WiFi. Also, I am still to find the version of speedtest.net giving the type of images you folk are getting. have tried the current as well as the previous versions.

Axiously waiting for my Epic 4G to come back after repairs. Hetal shipped it out on the 2nd and is in transit from Delhi-Kanpur at the moment.
Two queries:
1. Considering it has Gorilla Glass any advantage of protector film or Otterbox?
2. Has anybody managed toget Kies working. I could not do so on wither the 4G or even the Galaxy 551 (for contacts).

i would say 1-10 Windows. Unfortunately, we are stuck with it. Also, they charge your for the bug fixes calling them upgrades!
