amazing problem. I think ALLTEL uses ESN in decimal not HEX (Correct me if I am wrong). So could it be because of DECIMAL ESN? try flashing with sprint ROM and see if it happens and try reflashing again with same ROM and it it reappears.

Its not about being follower. 20k any day is good price. But using handset without keyboard is great pain. But again is individual prefernce, it can not be generic deterrent. If you consider usability, I phone is not a great phone, that most users agree. Can you believe phone I saw was not having SMS forward facility. You can imagine pain. Also fear of phone getting relocked, if not used with caution. Its gestures and prediction is great. Web browser is amazing. Music, other phone may be not as great as iphone, I am not fond of hearing music IN MY EARS. Restrictions on the person who spent money should be objected by every one. Even battery was not user replacible. I phone created hype beyond its capability thats the fact, but at the same time, fact is APPLE is known to be monopolistic than microsoft and many others. Even when I see android, it seems to be more in tune with APPLE than MS.

Perhaps you said every thing so precisely. Every one just think as per hype created. Most people get drwoned in hype and cant think whats good. I have seen Iphone and recently used it for about an hour. Its as I mentioned more of technology demonstration. Also few days back, I mentioned that they are trying (apple) to bring CDMA monopoly to GSM. As far as I am concern, I will never ever go for locked handset and non open technology like CDMA, Iphone etc.

BSNL EVDO cards if available, you can expect average speed of about 500 kbps. It may not work atleast 2-3 hours a day even at 25 kbps. But you get unlimited at 550. 1X is OK, if you do not have much of upload and download requirments. Wireless, I am sure will be not be as good as wired connection.

It appears APPLE guys are trying to make GSM like CDMA. Every thing controlled by operator or device manufacturer. Hope they do not succeed.

As arun mentioned this topic is discussed quite many times. I have used all 3 OS so mentioning it in brief 1. There is no OS which is superior or inferior. Ofcourse there are features which are friendlier 2. Symbian is largest 65% about smartphone OS. Is good robust OS, faster than palm and WM. 3. Palm and symbian are practically do not require stylus and can be easily operated by buttons only. Palm is better than symbian in this front. WM its impossible. 4. Palm do not support multitasking. SYM & WM do support. 5. Palm do not have good browser. Its 4 years old browser. Here palm bottoms. Even Opera can not be used sucessfully because of withdrawn support for JVM since last 4 years. Palm there has been no update since last 4-5 years. Its aged OS, which need serious revamp. 6. WM with newer versions, becoming slower (THis is my opinion, others may differ) 7. WM do not support call recording. SYMBIAN and PALM do. 8. in palm there is no good groups SMS software. 9. office apps are better in PALM and SYM than WM. Finally, its your requirement which decides which one is better.

Try dataviz.com, documents to go. Its very good software. I have used it on my PALM TREO and infact it supports office features better than MS OFFICE Mobile.

All above superiority of GSM is because GSM technology is developed and thrown open by society and not company. Also europe has better ways of managing technology than US. BTW, very good observations hetal. I am anxiously waiting for CDMA to die if they do not open up.

for browsing I will suggest saperate data card with RUIM support. This way you can have better choices in future (Number portability) and also you will spend almost same amount or less than reasonable quality handset in CDMA. Chepest handset would be Nokia 2865 / LG 6600 (If both available) if you want to go for single handset about 5K.

What all other said is true, please wait for some time or invest very little on reliance handsets. Infact CDMA handsets. You can choose low cost RUIM enabled handset and go for RUIM enabled data card, use it for surfing as well as for voice.

Death of technology is difficult but reliance and tata contributed a lot to make CDMA a noticeable technology (largest CDMA operator VERIZON has only 6 crore subscribers). But Qualcomm remain stuck to its monopolistic business model, where it ask for 5-10% royalty on handset price. I dont understand, why should they bother about handset price? China unicom has been struggling since last so many years to make CDMA as open as GSM but some how they too have not succeded and eventually left CDMA as only data phones. They advertise in china as surf CDMA, talk GSM, that is the reason why there are so many chinese CDMA + GSM handsets. BSNL will surely offer EVDO as DATA ONLY connections with probably limited roaming. Unless CDMA becomes open standard like GSM where all handset programming is done like GSM once user insert its SIM / RUIM, CDMA can not grow. Frankly I will be happiest person to see monopolistic technology dying, doesn't matter how superior that technology may be.

I think that CDMA operators themselves may not be insterested in providing EVDO because they have to subsidize handsets too in CDMA. I will be happy if CDMA dies sooner because such protected, monopolistic technology is no good for users. We all have wasted so much of money and time in making handset to use where as most GSM users spend time on modding handset for better performance.

I have 700P, do you want to buy it? YOu just have to do *228. I must say PALM is really great OS. Only thing is they have not bothered to upgrade it since last 5 years, hence bit out of date for browser and UI. But at the same time its greatness surely because of simple yet most effective UI, I hvae ever seen. Palm is seeing is beliving sort of OS.

in gsm if you get edge speed will be no more than 50-60 kbps. Cdma will give you 70-100 kbps. Once you have used cdma you will surely regret using gsm data, on computer. Pl. Don't keep high expectations from gsm data.

Kumaar you are right, at the same time knowing more is also equally important, just for the sake of it. portability can be done two ways, 1. by installing DNS server like concept, where all phone goes to one central server, where operator is checked and then ported to respective operator. This is perhaps better way to port it. 2. call launch to original operator as per numbering plan, then forwarded to other operator (like call forwarding), this is more expensive and operator dependent. Original Operator can play game if he wants to.
