I agree with what you say, but for voice you dont need such expensive and fancy handset. Radio and FM players (2-4 GB) cost less than 4K and good qulity color handset with basic features cost less than 5K. So no point going for such expensive just stylish handset. I am adicted to CDMA quality and reliance coverage. But dont advocate expensive handsets atleast for CDMA or in GSM if locked.

Frankly, It is not wise to invest so much on CDMA handsets. As they are locked, you are tied down to operators. One should be cautious since MNP is now on horizon. Whats so great about Moto RAZR / KRZR / RAZR 2 ? Except for style? For java support Nokias are best. But service wise they are worst. My view point. Not a binding statement.

Prices of medias are governed by royalties lavied by inventors of media. Like till philips was charging US $ 1 per DVD media, DVDS were costing more than 75 bucks. As soon as they reduced to US $0.1 it has became less than 30 bucks. Untill war of formats is not over, it is always risky to buy players or drives. It was the same case even for beta (Video cassettes) I was victim 'coz I bought it becoz it was sony product in i think 1982 (I was not capable of buying it but I was cursed by my uncle in 1984) for suggesting him and making him buy beta VCR. Since then I decided not to buy any thing unless there is clear cut verdict. That is the one reason I avoided buying even Double layer DVD drive till now.

HTC touch is rebirth of htc phones without key board and has better navigation and initial screen. It is pain to use PDA without key boards. You can try using it by doing some repairing if new file system suports. People have failed doing so in 6800 atleast. So its a matter of chance.

Try downloading document from nokia and other site for AT commands on CDMA handset and see. Mostly data cards do support AT commands for SMS. You can also viand download reference manuals from other manufacturers like www.multitech.com

Even if reliance offers EVDO in near future keep in mind that EVDO can not be activated unlessphone is supplied by service providers. As EVDO authentication is very typical and still people are unable to break. Also in 1X I dont think any one is able to connect to QNC. Thats the reason why R WORLD is not available in after market phones with RUIM. So who ever is buying handsets from market / US keep in mind that EVDO will not be available on after marker / tweaked handsets. Important thing, changing ESN is illegal. Programming handset without affecting its FCC ID and ESN is absolutely legal.

Do u mean back cover(which covers battary) of 6800? Is it not possible to get a remolded back cover of PPC accomidating RUIM slot? I think if one goes to FRP molder, he can mold FRP covers. Fiber Reinforced Plastics can me made in any color, with very high gloss. (Helmets are made from FRP). Making wood mold may cost less than 750 buck. I will suggest RIMWEBIANS who are interested in buying 6800 from US, ontribute some money to person who has 6800 and he can get covers made and then gives covers at cost or add little profits to cover his out of pocket expenses. Covers can be as thin as 1.5 mm

Also though you do not prefer to change hardware, that seems to be the only way at this moment because spending on obsolete phones data cable / wasting time on it, it has small jumper (hardware modifications) and softwre modifications too. As far as I know, 6600 is hard nut to crack. But again, I have not done any thing myself on 6600 as I imported few pieces and sold off.

I think in this discussion one fact is forgotten that when one is on GSM, they have access to about 3 service providers network, where as in CDMA and BSNL only one service providers. If reliance and tata join hands, I am sure they can give GSM operators run for money.

I think manufaturers are trying to keep cost under control by not providing 3G. As 3G phone ideally do not require wifi. Also 3G still is less than 25% of global population.

It should work well, why should there be any problem? In india, I dont think there is any service level differentiation like in US

600 bucks is really great price, if its including shipping, else shipping itself cost more than 500 bucks
