Did the new AVG update kill your Windows 7 ?

Many AVG anti-virus owners using 64 -bit Windows 7 woke up to BSoD’s (Blue Screen of Death) after a routine update. Users were required to reboot post installation and after doing so, suffered crashes once their systems started up. AVG has identified the issue and say it is was caused by an incorrectly published CTF file.

AVG has pulled the update from the servers and have published a step by step guide on how to get your computer back on track:

Step 1: Download AVG’s Rescue CD from here.

Step 2: Extract the contents and run setup.exe, when asked for a destination. Select a letter which corresponds to a empty USB drive.

Step 3: Once installation is complete, boot the affected computer via the Boot Menu (use F12 to bring up the boot menu and select the USB drive).

Step 4: Once the process is complete, it will prompt you to “press any key”. Doing so will fix the problem automatically. After the fix is in, press ‘Enter’ to reboot your computer.

Step 5: After your computer boots to the desktop and the AVG program is in a error state, download the latest installation file and select the repair option.

Some users have complained that the solution given above didn’t work for them and that they still face the Blue Screens. If you are one of the unlucky ones, there is another solution that's been posted at the AVG forums.
