The Asian Age Mumbai, Oct. 13: Reliance Infocomm will be setting up 8,600 wirless PCOs only for the rural areas in the current fiscal. According to a senior official of Anil Ambani’s ADAE group company’s Reliance Infocomm, the telecom major has renewed its focus in its rural wireless public call offices, or PCO, project. The company plans to launch these PCOs in an exclusive format wherein the cost of setting up these PCOs will be partially borne between the company and the operator. Also, these PCOs will have a separate branding and positioning strategy with a new brand name. These PCO operators would work on the basis of commission on sales and apart from performance-based incentives will also receive compensation for in-store displays and promos. Branded PCO business is witnessing a gradual shift in focus of all telecom operators as they move towards the hinterland. Given the steep fall in call charges and tighter margins across the platforms the battle is now being fought with a strategy focus on increasing volumes while retaining the existing subscriber base. Infocomm is banking upon its huge rural penetration which it has achieved so far. According to an internal audit of the rural marketing division of the company for the second quarter ended in September, Infocomm already covers as many as 4,000 cities and towns of which more than 3,700 are small towns or semi-urban settlements. In addition, the company’s distribution network now covers 1,20,000 villages across India which will play a crucial role in its rural wireless PCO project. It is noteworthy that the branded rural PCO market is gradually heating up into a fierce battle for market shares between leading private telecom operators like Tata Teleservices, Bharti and Infocomm. Tata Teleservices which operates its branded PCOs (over 3 lakhs across India) under the brand name Tata Indicom Smart PCOs has already made deep inroads in rural markets of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra while Bharti which launched its branded PCOs sometime back has yet to make a significant mark in the segment.

For resolving the dormancy problem, just run a ping window or use Deepu's ping utility. (check the R-connect forum posts for it). There isn't any particular method for increasing the speed for LG RD 2030. What average speed are you getting while downloading ?

what a turnaround, amit ! Instead of reducing the prices, they have discontinued the existing data based plans ! Closing thread as this topic deals with the data based plan which doesn't exist anymore. To discuss about the new time based plans, go here.

Longhorn Becomes Windows Vista™
Arun replied to Vishal Gupta's topic in General Technical Discussion
Windows Vista Build 5231 Leaks October 13, 2005 Neowin.net A new build of Windows Vista has leaked, a week before the new build is expected to be released to testers. The October CTP build released to testers will incorporate additional functions than this leak, whilst likely retaining the same build number. Released with build 5231 are Windows Media Player Version 11 (still under the guise of Windows Media Player 10), which includes a smart new interface, and the latest Beta of Internet Explorer 7, with tabs adopting the more conventional ‘below the address bar’ style. New sound features are added with active output and input monitors, so hopefully previous sound problems have been resolved. Microsoft & Yahoo Links Instant Messenger Networks !
Arun replied to Vishal Gupta's topic in General Technical Discussion
GOOGLE BETS ON OPEN COMMUNICATIONS PROTOCOLS [Oct 13, 2005] Slashdot.org While Yahoo! and Microsoft link their proprietary networks for Instant Messaging (read press release), Google bets on Open Protocols to make information universally accessible. And yesterday Google announced that Sean Egan has been hired by the company. Sean is the main developer of Gaim, the most popular IM client. According to Sean, he's to work "on making it as easy as possible for other clients to use Google Talk's voice features", so we can expect Gaim and other clients to be interoperable with Google Talk's voice features in the near future. Currently, Google uses XMPP/Jabber specs, but they claim to be supporting open server-to-server federation, and work "to hear from other people in the communications industry about how best to build a federation model that is open, scalable". In fact, there are this month several tests with firms like EarthLink, Sipphone or PeopleCall. -

So the data based plans are not withdrawn for existing users. The Freedom@Night plan does look good for night birds. Anyway, platinum plan was the best, too bad it isn't available for new users anymore ! Interesting quotes from the new FAQ...

Broadband rates may fall further, but growth stagnates - Rediff.com Joji Thomas Philip in New Delhi | October 13, 2005 10:37 IST Despite a steep fall in telecom tariffs and the entry of new players like Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd, India will fall well short of its target of having 3 million broadband subscribers by December-end 2005. Private and state-owned service providers had 610,000 high-speed Internet connections, compared with the 6.5 million dial-ups at the end of September 2005. With less than three months to go, the ministry of communications and information technology has now brought its target down, and is hoping to cross the one-million mark -- a third of the broadband policy target of three million connections, set less than 12 months ago. For consumers, there was reason to cheer on the tariff front. Broadband prices, which were as high as Rs 1,800 a month in January 2004, have now tumbled to Rs 250, and are expected to fall further. Indian tariffs are also among the lowest broadband tariffs in the world. The charge per MB of download has come down to Re 1 compared with Rs 4 a year ago. "It can be seen that the rate of growth is not adequate for achieving the broadband policy target of three million subscribers by the end of December 2005, and hence more concerted efforts are required by all service providers," the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said in its latest report. BSNL and MTNL executives said progress on providing content-rich services had been slow and that it was the primary reason for the poor growth. "In a bid to enrich content, we have already invited expressions of interest from content providers on a non-exclusive revenue-share basis, and will follow it up with tenders soon. Our subscribers will have access to Internet protocol and time-shifted television, video-on-demand, voice and interactive messaging, and next-generation gaming before the year-end," a BSNL executive said. Operators such as Bharti and Reliance Infocomm have also begun test runs of IPTV on broadband speeds of 10 mbps. This is expected to hit the market in six to nine months' time. For private players, growth has been hampered to a significant extent also by a lack of last-mile copper connectivity. "The government's threat that the last-mile copper connectivity will be unbundled if BSNL fails to meet stipulated targets is very hollow. They will never resort to any such act and broadband growth will therefore continue to be slow," said the spokesperson of a leading private operator.

All you want to know about data cards - Rediff.com Shobhana Subramanian | October 11, 2005 Would you like to surf the net while lazying on the beach? Or even in the car, on your way home? Get yourself a data card. It's a small card - slightly bigger than a credit card - with a small antenna. Insert it into your laptop and browse at length. And it's not just the Internet - you can also log on to your office LAN or intranet and access your mails and other files. So, even while you're travelling, you can stay in touch with the sales, MIS and other automation systems. Of course, the card comes at a price. A Tata Indicom V card costs Rs 9,995, while an Airtel card would set you back by Rs 12,999, which is an introductory offer. The Reliance card is now available for Rs 9,000. But, if you can persuade your boss to pick up one for everyone in the office, it would cost you less. And each of these card suppliers is happy receiving your money in instalments. While the Airtel card can be picked up in 12 instalments of Rs 1,229 with a Citibank Credit card, EMIs for the Indicom card are either Rs 1,995 or as low as an incredible Rs 295. Now, what about speed - single most important feature to be scrutinised? Well, they may not match the speed of your broadband connection at home, but they're not too bad either. The companies claim that a peak speed of up to 100-150 kbps is possible and concede that the average speed may be much lower. The average throughput one can get at any time is far lower at 33-56 kbps. Tariff plans offer variety. So, apart from standard packages (see table) you may opt for other schemes as well. For instance, Tata Indicom has a six-month scheme priced at Rs 3,600 for six GB, which allows you to use one GB every month. HOW THEY STACK UP (in Rs) Airtel 399 for 100 MB 599 for 1GB 799 for 1.5GB Reliance Connect 640 for 1GB 900 for 1.5GB 1500 unlimited Tata Indicom V Card 350 for 500 MB 700 for 1GB 1500 unlimited This means the rate drops to 60 paise per MB from 70 paise per MB, if you pick up a monthly scheme. The rate falls further, if you pick a yearly package. Data cards also allow you to make a phone call. No, don't pick up your cellphone, just plug the earphone into the PC and talk on. Charges for these calls are according to the standard plans, and one can opt for value-added services such as a caller-identification services. If you don't want to talk but simply want to send a message, that's possible too. And you can receive messages too. The charges for phone calls and SMSs are usually the same as you would pay for your mobile phone. One thing you must always remember to do: charge your laptop battery, and you can use the card wherever you go. A Bharti spokesperson says the card can be used across the country if the customer is logged on to the Airtel network. The card also works when you are roaming internationally on GSM networks. The Reliance team says the service is available in 3,700 cities and towns, wherever there is a Reliance network. And this holds true for the Tata data card as well. In the not-too-distant future, the Evdo (Evolution for Data Only) and EVDV technologies would get you data speeds of 2.5 to 3.5 mbps. But that's still some time away.

LOL, Big brother is watching you ! what was the from email address in the email ?

I haven't experienced any wrong or excess usage in R-Connect's unbilled usage till now. Usually, the usage shown is lower than what bandwidth meters like DUmeter logs. I guess the CC guy told you over phone that you had downloaded 870 MB over those 2 days ? Since you have a complaint registered, try insisting on a printed proof of it.
-
What is the data transfer limit per month for your connection ? If its unlimited, then 256 kbps for Rs.700 per month is cheap enough that they could be sharing the connection with many users.

There are limitations, but 30 SMS per day to Indian networks alone is good enough. Many other operators are supported with 20 - 30 SMS limit per day. Moreover, you gain credits when you receive a reply from a mobile, which increases the credit limit for the day. So if your credit for the day is over, you can wait for a mobile user to reply to your message so that you’ll regain a credit. Otherwise, you can wait 24 hours from the first time your account was active for the day to receive your daily message credits. However, Credits not used during the day are not carried over to the next day. To check your available credit, from your Chikka Messenger client, click on the Control Panel button and select Options, then click on Show Available Credits. You can have SMS forwarded to your mobile if you are offline and also you alert your friends when you go online in Chikka messenger. I hope they will start MMS as well soon as its already available in Philippines. Chikka's revenue comes from the revenue earned when a mobile user replies to message sent from Chikka Messenger. Yes, there is a 5 message limit per buddy, until they reply back. Thats the only downside, other than that, it works really well !

As of now, there isn't much options which can be configured for the Lo-fi version under the Admin Control Panel of Invision Power Board. I've checked the ACP in a beta version of the latest IPB, couln't find options for Lo-Fi version in it either.
