  4. Rim International Roaming On Cdma

Reliance Infocomm offers roaming to globe-trekkers on RIM [ Wednesday, August 10, 2005 12:48:08 AM] KOLKATA: The day isn’t too far when a CDMA mobile subscriber won’t need to grab a GSM handset to roam while travelling abroad. Reliance Infocomm is about to become the country’s first CDMA operator to offer global roaming to its 12m RIM subscribers. This will be the first major telecom-related announcement from Anil Ambani-controlled Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Enterprises (ADAE) after it assumed the reins at Reliance Infocomm. At present, global roaming is only offered by GSM operators. Reliance Infocomm has inked global roaming arrangements with some of the world’s top CDMA mobile service providers like China Unicom, US-based Sprint PCS, Pelephone of Israel and Telecom Mobile of New Zealand. It is poised to close similar deals with Verizon of US and South Korea’s SK Telecom. There’s also talk of a possible roaming alliance with Japan’s NTT DoCoMo, the world’s first 3G mobile service provider on the W-CDMA (wideband-CDMA) platform. Discussions on global roaming revenue share remain under wraps. Confirming the developments, an Infocomm spokesperson told ET, “Reliance Infocomm is poised to provide global roaming services to its 12m RIM subscribers. It has inked international roaming tie-ups with China Unicom, Sprint PCS, Pelephone and Telecom Mobile, with many more to follow. Global roaming will initially be available in the US, China, Israel and New Zealand. Subsequently, RIM customers will be able to roam in Japan, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan and Thailand using their CDMA handsets.” Infocomm is mum on its global roaming tariff package, which is awaiting Trai approval. For instance, it’s unknown whether the company will waive a chunk of the mandatory security deposit before activating the global roaming facility as a promotional exercise. It is well known that GSM operators charge customers a hefty Rs 3,000 as security deposit before activating global roaming facility to destinations like the US or Europe. Anil Ambani, ADAE chairman, is learnt to have discussed Infocomm’s upcoming global roaming services launch during a recent meeting with Trai chairman Pradip Baijal. Once operator-level roaming alliances are in place, Infocomm’s subscribers will be able to globally roam across the US, Canada, China, New Zealand, Israel, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia, Hong Kong and Thailand. Global roaming tie-ups are in the offing with 13 CDMA operators in 12 countries spanning three continents to cover 90% of the world’s CDMA footprint. But it remains to be seen how Infocomm rustles up global roaming options in Europe and West Asia, which are traditional GSM bastions. Infocomm’s decision to flag off CDMA-based global roaming in China, US, Thailand and Hong Kong isn’t surprising. China, US, Thailand and Hong Kong were the country’s top four tourist destinations in ’04. “International roaming is a critical feature of global travel and Indians seem to be travelling a lot these days with the onset of fierce competition among foreign and domestic air carriers. While 5.3m Indians travelled abroad in ‘03, their number shot up 17% to 6.2m in ’04, top tourism industry circles said.

  7. Terrible Tuesday

It`s pouring money for cellular firms Mumbai August 03, 2005 For the mobile operators in Maharashtra, the monsoon mayhem was a blessing in disguise. The state, which is divided into two telecom circles — Mumbai and Rest of Maharashtra (RoM) — registered a spurt in outgoing calls and SMSs, as cell phones was the easiest — and sometimes the only — mode of communication available. The increase in usage was as high as 50 per cent for certain companies on certain days of the rain-hit week — that is from July 25 to July 31. Except for Reliance Infocomm, all other operators registered rise in outgoing calls and SMSs. Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTSL) registered a 50 per cent increase in outgoing calls on July 26, the worst rain-hit day of the past week. The CDMA-based cellular service provider had clocked around 13.8 million calls on that day in Mumbai, compared with 9.5 million calls it normally registers on a daily basis. For RoM, it was around 8.5 million calls, up by 21.43 per cent, from 7 million calls that were being registered on a daily basis, according to TTSL Managing Director Charles Antony. TTSL also recorded a 50 per cent increase in SMSes during the week, with its subcribers sending around 1.65 million messages, compared to a daily average of 1.1 million SMSes. The increase in usage was not steady during the week, as it fluctuated on certain days, he said. Mobile operator Airtel recorded 51 per cent rise in outgoing calls on July 28. The service provider had made all outgoing calls free for 24 hours from July 27 (Wednesday) 6 pm, which resulted it in clocking the maximum number of outgoing calls on July 28, Thursday . The operator had posted a rise in outgoing calls during the rain-hit week, even though figures were not immediately available. Industry observers believe that the rise in company’s outgoing calls from its network ranged between 20 per cent and 30 per cent. Orange also posted an increase in outgoing calls, even though the figures were yet to be collated. The increase was also reflected in SMSs, according to Orange Chief Operating Officer Harit Nagpal. “There was an increase in both voice and data usage, but we won’t be able to quantify at this point of time. The rise was natural, as people were anxious to find out about their near and dear ones,” he added. However, Reliance Infocomm Ltd (RIC) did not register any rise in calls between the company’s handsets (Reliance to Reliance). On the contrary, it registered a slight dip in calls from its network to other networks. An RIC spokesperson said that the company’s network was sturdy and functional during the week, while the dip in calls were due to network failure at the receiving end. “What was important for us was to maintain our network, rather than enhancing usage at a time of crisis,” he said.
  8. Reliance Capital pays Rs 400 crores for AMP Sanmar Mumbai/Chennai August 1, 2005 Reliance Life Insurance Company Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Capital Ltd (RCL), and the shareholders of AMP Sanmar Life Insurance Company, today signed an agreement for the sale of 100 per cent equity in the Chennai-based life insurance firm. Reliance Capital's acquisition is, however, subject to the regulatory approval. Reliance Capital had already applied to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) for the renewal of its life insurance licence under Reliance Life Insurance Company. It had received the IRDA R2 clearance in early 2001. Highly-placed sources disclosed that the deal was struck for about Rs 400 crore, making it Anil Ambani’s biggest acquisition to date, since Adlabs was acquired for Rs 360 crore. It is not yet known whether there will be any change in the name of the company, though Graham Meyer, CEO, AMP Sanmar Life said this would have no bearing on policy holders. AMP Sanmar Life, a 26:74 joint venture between the Australian AMP group and the Chennai-based Sanmar, has a capital base of Rs 217.5 crore. This acquisition will give Reliance Capital an immediate entry into the growing life insurance business. AMP Sanmar has over 90 offices, a 9,000-strong agency force and an employee base of 900. "With private players doing well, we see the acquisition of AMP Sanmar as a great opportunity to tap the huge potential in the Indian Market," said Reliance executives on being asked why the company chose to enter the business today, having obtained an in-principle IRDA licence in 2001. Since the split between the two Ambani brothers, Anil Ambani has been "a man in a hurry, wanting to achieve things and strengthen his presence where ever possible," said top industry sources. The acquisition of AMP Sanmar, as in the case of Adlabs, will be funded by his own personal wealth, they added. Reliance Capital buys AMP Sanmar InsuranceReliance Capital has already successfully forayed into the non-life insurance business through Reliance General Insurance Company. The younger Ambani hopes to capitalise on the synergy between Reliance Infocomm and Life Insurance by cross-selling to the 1 crore subscriber base. Executives compared the synergy with that of bancassurance as Reliance Infocomm hoped to tap its 1500 outlets and 1 lakh channel partners. Today's development marks the first true sale of a life insurance company in India. There had been a host of suitors for AMP Sanmar, which of late had seen phenomenal growth in its business despite the announcement of both the shareholders exiting. The Australian partner has declared its intentions to focus on its core home markets last year having exited the UK operations. Following the finalisation of the deal, speaking to Business Standard, AMP Sanmar Managing Director Graham Meyer said, "The shareholders decided that Reliance was the most appropriate suitor in view of its strength, commitment and determination." He said the strong Indian corporate house offered security to the life insurance business. Aviva and ICICI Prudential were among other life insurance companies in the race till the end, said industry sources. Meyer said the decision to sell was driven purely by a strategic decision taken by AMP's CEO and the board, and had nothing to do with the performance in India. The operations' break-even point would come after six to seven years, he added. The company began operations in January 2002. The biggest challenge in managing AMP Sanmar was to deal with the pace of growth, said Meyer. "The speed was extraordinary," he added. The company earned an aggregate premium of about Rs 200 crore in 2004-05, a growth of over 300 per cent over the previous year. In February 2005, the partners pumped in another Rs 57.10 crore into the life insurance company to take the total capital in the business to Rs 217.10 crore. Meyer said AMP Sanmar was second or third in terms of size in the southern states, its stronghold. On an all-India basis, AMP Sanmar's ranking is lower. AMP Sanmar has over 100 branches spread across the four southern states and parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra, and has covered over 2.25 lakh lives in the course of its operations. Meyer said the existing management would work through the transition period, the duration of which depended on the insurance regulator. The Sanmar Group announced that it had entered the business at the invitation of AMP and the decision to sell its stake was triggered by AMP's decision to exit. In a statement, N Sankar, chairman of the group, said, "I am happy that the sale is to an Indian entity committed to the life insurance business in India."

  11. Laptop Discussion

Thats nice, utsav... but the price mentioned in it for Acer TravelMate 4002WNLCi is wrong, it costs around Rs.64000
  12. Laptop Discussion

As per benchmarks, "Mobile AMD Sempron™ processor 2800+" outperforms "Mobile Intel Celeron 350/360", at the same price. And most of the entry level notebooks mentioned above have 256 MB DDR333 RAM, 40 GB HDD, Integrated graphics upto 128 MB shared, CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive, etc.
  13. Rim Ip Address

You can check the dynamic IP address by visiting a WAP page (through R-Surf) in your server and then check the server logs (if you have access to a server with raw log statistics).

  15. Laptop Discussion

Most of the entry level notebooks come with Linux, and Acer Aspire 3002NLC comes with Linpus Linux. Its kinda ploy by the MNC's where they reduce the price of the notebook by installing Linux and they know that people will be formatting them and installing pirated versions of Windows ! Website Official price is: Rs.33800 (net price, everything included) I got it along with Rs.800 off from the dealer (so Rs.33000), and an Apacer 128 MB MP3 player/USB drive
  16. Laptop Discussion

Acer's Aspire 3002 NLC (Rs.33700 with FREE 128 MB MP3 Player cum USB Drive), Acer TravelMate 2355 NXC (Rs.30000) and HP Compaq Presario M2202TU (Rs.32000) are good entry level notebooks available in the market currently. Acer's Aspire 3002 NLC is powered with an AMD Mobile Sempron 2800+ processor, while the others are Celeron 350/360. Acer's Aspire 3002 NLC is a good buy except for the fact that it has a poor battery life time of just 1 - 1.5 hours.

  18. Mudra Gets Back Reliance Infocomm Media Account Reliance Infocomm is consolidating its entire media AOR (agency of record) account back with the Anil Ambani-controlled Mudra Communication. Mudra's media buying arm, OMS, has already begun work on the Reliance Infocomm account, estimated at over Rs 100 crore, agency sources said. It has been learnt that OMS is in the process of setting up a dedicated team to handle the Infocomm account. Prior to this development, Reliance Infocomm's media planning and buying was being handled internally by Reliance itself, though media release orders were being routed through OMS. "Reliance Infocomm's media planning and buying are back with OMS. It was inevitable," industry sources said. According to sources, this development is an indication that the creative account will also move back to the Rs 1,000-crore Mudra. The creatives of Reliance Infocomm are currently split between Saatchi & Saatchi and Publicis. Top officials at Mudra were unavailable for comment. In October 2004, Mukesh Ambani had taken away the Reliance Infocomm account away from Mudra, in which Anil Ambani holds 90 per cent equity. This was seen as first sign of problems brewing between two brothers. It was also first time that any Reliance account had been moved away to an agency other than in-house Mudra. Infocomm's advertising had created a huge buzz in the market, with the ‘Sehwag ki ma' commercial. With the telecom sector booming, advertising budgets are expected to grow exponentially. Expenditures of Reliance, Hutch and Bharti are among fastest growing among various categories.

  23. Close to Nature: Reliance Infocomm promotes wildlife awareness: Sunday, July 17, 2005 (Chennai): Two remarkable wildlife films by Shekhar Dattatari marked the launching of the Wild Macaw Club, set up by Reliance Infocomm in Chennai. And as the wonders of the forest unfurled before their eyes, the students of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, which is partnering the initial project, sat spellbound. Camping, trekking, nature trails and jungle trips are also on the cards for members. "We have just seen many beautiful scenes like the tigers pouncing on each other. It's real fun. I would love to go to the forests, if I got the chance," said a student. Wild Macaw Club is one with a new and delightful title of Wild Macaw Club, hoping that the venture will teach children about wildlife and forests, which badly need to be preserved. Need for preservation: There was time for a question and answer session with the award winning filmmaker - who has consistently used the medium of film to increase awareness about our precious wildlife and the way it is to be preserved. "We are looking at this as a new initiative to understand the travel space itself, to see what travel is all about, and what the travellers are looking for," said Lakshmi Sharath, Netway Project, Reliance Infocomm. "I'm far more concerned about what most of the corporates are doing to India. They are mining and raping this country with no thought of tomorrow," said said Dattatri, the filmmaker. "This is something very very serious, which we need to be concerned about. Teaching people and so on are wonderful things, but on the other hand, stripping India's forests--- this is not on," he added. Most of the new members, about 1500 in all, are customers of different Reliance WebWorlds and registration for the first month is free. And it's hoped that, apart from making outdoor travel a habit, enjoying wildlife itself will become a popular past time.
