  22. Sify.com Tuesday, 12 October , 2004, 18:09 After successful completion of the first phase, Reliance Infocomm, one of the largest mobile service providers in the country now embarks on the second phase of expansion programme to bring in more than 5,000 cities and towns within its service network by March 2005. Presently the Reliance India Mobile(RIM) services were available in about 1,100 cities and towns across the country, said RIM President, Applications and Solutions Group Mahesh Prasad. Speaking to newsmen here today along with Rim Head Marketing Kaushik Roy and other senior officials of the company to announce the launch of a "bouquet of puja gifts to RIM subscribers", Prasad said like in the rest of the country a detailed expansion plan to take the RIM service to every nook and corner of West Bengal within the next three to four months had also been started at a cost of several hundred crores of rupees. "We hope to take RIM services to as many as 200 towns in West Bengal from 14 at present before the end of the current year," Prasad said and assured the subscribers of a complete trouble free service even at the remotest part of the state. Stating that despite fierce competition among all the three major mobile service providers in the country, RIM continued to enjoy the most favoured status among the subscribers with their total number already crossing the nine million mark throughout the country, both Prasad and Roy claimed that said before the end of the current fiscal in March 2005, the total number of RIM subscribers in the country would "definitely" cross the 10.5 million mark. About West Bengal they said the total number of RIM subscribers presently stood around 550,000 including about 400,000 in Kolkata alone. We plan to touch the one million mark by March next, they replied to a questioner. About the growing number of complaints about the RIM billing causing a lot of dissension among its subscribers not only in West Bengal but all across the country, Prasad described it as the "thing of the past" adding that necessary technical upgradation had also been made to cope with the sudden increase in demand and rectify the previous problems. Regarding the future of R-world which had already generated tremendous enthusiasm among the RIM subscribers with over 90 per cent of them using the diversified service regularly and quite often, Prasad said besides continuing the service totally free of cost for "some more time', a lot of other value added services were being included in it to make it more attractive to RIM customers. "We are also planning to introduce very soon a ten digit registration number instead of the present eight digit for the RIM customers in tune with the ongoing technological advancement being made into the whole system," Roy but refused to elaborate further on the point saying the time was not ripe yet. Speaking about the ensuing Puja gifts, being introduced for about a week from the Maha Sasthi day for all RIM customers not only in Kolkata and West Bengal but across the country, the company officials said the bouquet included free RIM to RIM calls for ten hours at night, RIM puja contest, RIM post paid discounts in several business outlets and special R-World facilities showcasing the city of Joy during the coming Durga Pujo festival besides offering downloadable free puja ring tones for RIM subscribers.

  24. PTI - October 12, 2004 19:03 IST Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd, has won this year's prestigious World Communication Award as the world's most influential person in telecommunications in 2004. Meanwhile, Sunil Mittal-owned AirTel was voted as the 'best communication brand.' The World Communications Awards are sponsored by the leading global telecommunications publication Total Telecom. The publication's readers choose the most influential person in telecommunications. After receiving the award, Sunil Mittal said: "It is indeed noteworthy that our efforts at placing Bharti on the global map at par with the leading telecom brands of the world has been recognised." "The potential of telecommunications in this country (India) is enormous and AirTel has been the first to recognise this potential and commit itself to play a lead role in connecting India like never before and providing high quality telecom services to all," Mittal added. Mittal said "it is an honour to achieve this award and we can indeed say that AirTel has not only made us at Bharti, but also made the country proud." Acknowledging the honour, Ambani (who did not attend the ceremony) said in a statement: "The award is very much associated with a recognition of the rapidly growing influence of India in the global telecommunications arena." Ed McCormack, Executive Vice President, Corporate Development, Flag Telecom, received the award on Monday night on behalf of Ambani at the ceremony in London. Ambani said the dream of his father, Dhirubhai Ambani, who founded Reliance Industries a little over 35 years ago, was to build a business that would provide affordable means of information and communications to the people of India. "This award is a great tribute to Dhirubhai Ambani and his dream. In India, Reliance Infocomm is spearheading a massive telecommunications revolution with the vision to become a major global player over the next decade. Also, the strategic acquisition of Flag Telecom will place India at the forefront of the global broadband revolution," he said. Today, Reliance Infocomm is on course to achieve that dream. It has already constructed a pan-India optical fibre network, which will expand to over 100,000 kilometres of optical fibre and connect nearly 5,000 cities and towns by this year-end. When completed, the Reliance network will provide broadband connections to millions of homes and offices offering the latest technology and direct connectivity to the rest of the world via the Flag Telecom global network, he added. Reliance Infocomm, he said, has also ensured that 'making a phone call is less expensive than buying a postage stamp.' The company has more than 8 million mobile customers and attained the leadership position in the Indian mobile market in less than seven months from launch of its operations in May last year. Despite this growth, India's teledensity -- fixed and mobile -- is currently at less than 9 per cent. But future growth potential is staggering, he said.
