  7. TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ THURSDAY, MARCH 18, 2004 MUMBAI: A Broadband Bharat is likely to be a reality within the next 12-24 months, said Reliance Industries’ chairman and managing director, Mukesh Ambani, while speaking at the annual entertainment meet, Ficci Frames 2004. In his valedictory address, Mr Ambani said Reliance Infocomm had finished alpha testing for their broadband connectivity and are now in the beta testing phase. “We are testing it in around 5,000 houses and will be scaling it up,” he said. An audio-video presentation spoke about connecting 80 million households. Earlier in the day, Prakash Bajpai, who heads the enterprise division of Reliance Infocomm said: “Around 2 lakh buildings will be fiberised during the next two weeks.” Regarding the launch of the NetWay project in March, he said we would like to do proper testing before we launch the project. “We had not given any dates before and we are not going to do so now either,” he said. “In a digital age, the consumer will come first, the content creator second and the content carrier third,” he added, while underlining the need to “forge partnerships with content creators.” Presenting his vision of digital entertainment, Mr Ambani said: “Digital entertainment will give consumers the opportunity to be part of the action. Thus, viewers will be able to participate in quiz contests, judge beauty pageants, join election debates and even actively alter the course of the story the way they want.” Subhash Chandra, chairman, Zee Telefilms, said the size of the entertainment industry was around Rs 20,000 crore currently. He made a case for minimal regulation for the industry saying that “the unregulated regime led to exponential growth. If they leave us alone, we will do much better.” He spoke about the need for copyright protection and the need to adopt a liberal programming code which would be aired at proper timings. “The pirates in India and Malaysia are currently making about Rs 2,000 crore a year. If we can control them, then the industry will have revenues of around Rs 20,000 crore,” pointed out Mr Chandra. Amit Khanna, head of the Ficci convergence committee, said Indian films create a brand for Indian culture. “A study shows that 3.4 billion people watch Bollywood films while 2.8 billion watch Hollywood films,” he said referring to the market for Indian films. MUMBAI: "If you want to dream, dare to dream big." Thus Reliance Industries' chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani, paraphrasing his father Dhirubhai, described the plans he had for the rollout of Reliance Infocomm's broadband initiative. Called Broadband Bharat, it is almost ready to roll out across 1,100 towns and cities and covers a total of 80,000 kms of optic fibre cable. The only remaining link in the chain is the last mile, that is the customer. Speaking earlier in another session, Reliance Infocomm president Prakash Bajpai had said that 2,00,000 buildings would be connected within the next few weeks. This is the scale that Reliance has envisioned. It has also covered the international gateway by the recent acquisition of the US based Flag Telecom, said Ambani, in his keynote address at the valedictory session of Ficci Frames 2004 on Wednesday. This will link up Reliance's national network to four continents through 75,000 kms of under sea cable. "Digital technology will become as ubiquitous as electricity," Ambani said, giving an idea of the scale of the project. Ambani stressed that the broadband project would not eliminate television, movies or any of the present entertainment platforms but would only enhance the media experience. The future, according to Ambani, is interactive television, electronic newspapers, music delivery. The list goes on. The potential is huge, said Ambani, who sees the revenues from the Indian media and entertainment industry alone growing from $ two billion in aggregate terms to $ 200 billion in the next 20 years. "I believe India is the land of a billion opportunities," just about sums up Ambani's vision for Reliance's Broadband Bharat. The Reliance Group, which is emerging as an important stakeholder in the Indian entertainment industry, should be rolling out its digital distribution platform - the broadband network - in 12 to 24 months. "We are in an intensive phase of testing. We have completed the alpha testing and are now at beta stage," Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Ltd, said at the concluding session of the three-day conference, FICCI-Frames 2004. He spoke of setting up a `Broadband Bharat'. In the process of installing a digital distribution platform, the Reliance Group will look at partnership with content creators, Ambani said on the sidelines of the conference. The recent acquisition of the US-based Flag Telecom will boost its broadband efforts. Reliance Infocomm Ltd, mandated to realise the Group's broadband plans, is setting up a high capacity optic fibre network that will be 80,000 kilometres long and covering over 1,100 towns and cities. "It is evolving as a platform for repositories of knowledge and tools for collaboration available to all Indians," Ambani said. According to him, the country's entertainment industry has before it a wealth creating-opportunity. He estimates the global media and entertainment industry at $1 trillion. "Although, India has the most depth and diversity in entertainment today, we are nowhere in dollar terms," he said. Of the $1 trillion, US accounts for about half the market. The US makes about 450 movies a year and earns $32 billion (around Rs 1,44,704 crore). In contrast, India makes 800 movies a year but earns $0.5 billion (around Rs 2,261 crore). A similar scenario exists in other segments of the entertainment industry. Ambani feels that digital technology will drive the Indian entertainment industry to grow almost 100 times to $200 billion in 20 years time. Subhash Chandra, Chairman, Zee Telefilms Ltd, invited for the special address at the valedictory session of FICCI-Frames 2004, said that elimination of piracy could result in Rs 20,000 crore increase to the industry's revenues. "Currently, pirates of Indian content make about Rs 2,000 crore every year," he said. Chandra maintained that addressability would become a reality when consumers demand it. "The cable industry will be forced to go digital with competing technologies and that will drive addressability," he said. Though conditional access system (CAS) did not take off, television viewing will continue to be an integral part of Indian homes. "My belief is, there won't be another war fought on territorial disputes but there will be, on who controls mindspace," Chandra said.

  9. Firmware Upgradation

You will need special cable for doing this and the appropriate software and the new firmware too. It will be better if you could visit your nearest LG service center for upgrading it rather than doing it yourself and risking it to get damaged. Afterall, software upgradation is FREE

  12. New Members Introduce Yourself Here!

LOL, thanks for the big ovation Well i guess its time for me to chip in this thread I'm Arun, from Trivandrum (Kerala), aged 20, student in Engineering. I'm interested in anything related to Technology, love to fiddle with new tech gizmos (mobile phones especially ), etc., i do enjoy designing websites (do check out my website at www.ArunOnline.com) and I love to hang out it tech forums (really love Invision Power Board ) The main aspect that encouraged me start this forum for Reliance IndiaMobile users was the lack of a proper discussion board on the net where RIM users can discuss their experiences with their services/handsets. I'm a moderator in a couple of other forums as well and so I thought of starting this forum, dedicated for RIM users to interact each other. And one thing that many people asked me is... how do I manage to run this forum (I do remember someone asking me whether I'm a relative of Ambani ). Well, I run a small web hosting biz and I have enough space/bandwidth left over to share and hence I decided to utilize it in an efficient manner. So running this forum isn't a financial burden to me (i hope I'll be able to manage it as long as the forum size increases). BTW, if you would like to help me out further to run this forum, don't forget to buy web hosting from me I am deeply obliged to my friends (Chirag - posts like hell !, Ashok - child prodigy, Sunil, Niket, JAX, Vikas and many others ) who help me out here in moderating the forums. They are doing a great job in maintaining law and order in this forum. Please give them a big round of applause We are in the lookout for more moderators in the forum and hope to find more enthusiastic members in the forum. I hope this will be enough for now. I'd like to see the newbies to this forum introducing yourself here. If you got anything else to ask me, send me an email at arun@rimweb.com Thank you for your support !

  21. Financial Express, March 5, 2004 Korean major LG Electronics has completed the process of shipping five million handsets to Reliance Infocomm. This was announced at a press briefing by Reliance Industries’ chairman Mukesh Ambani and LG Electronics’ president & CEO Mun Hwa Park. Responding to a query, Mr Ambani said Reliance’s other vendors would continue to supply handsets. Among the vendors are Samsung, Nokia and Motorola. “This is being done to provide different options to our customers” added Mr Ambani. Commenting on the launch of the pre-paid service, Mr Ambani pointed out there were about four lakh new subscribers for the service so far. “We have registered healthy numbers for the service. Overall, we expect that we will grow by about two-and-a-half million subscribers each month over the next 30 months,” he said. Reliance Infocomm is in the midst of working out its international roaming service which it is expected to launch shortly. This will be across all GSM and CDMA networks. Responding to a query on the initial public offering (IPO), he said there was nothing planned for the moment.
  22. Yahoo Messenger @ R-World

Since TATA has signed up with Yahoo!, I don't think Reliance will keep themselves off from Yahoo!. It will only encourage Reliance to tie with Yahoo! . It has been the case with other operators as well, as pointed out by Sunil. Maybe DAPO users could be charged for 8242 services (Yahoo!), but not sure. Also, 8242 isn't listed in the 'Coming Soon' part of SMS 1234 services page. So it may take some more time for the signing up to take place. When I enquired about it with a Customer Care Representative, they said such a service 'may be started in future but no developments are taking place in that front at the moment'. MSN integraton would also be great. I hope Reliance will soon tie up with them too
  23. yup, i got got a plum cake for christmas for paying bill
  24. CyberMedia News March 01, 2004 Reliance Infocomm has decided to move beyond voice. The company has outlined a three-pronged strategy for soon to be implemented applications on its CDMA network. It will move horizontally with applications like e-mail, Intranet and sales automation and vertically with applications like ATMs, stock brokering, travel reservations, etc. The company is also working on special projects like lottery terminals and automated meter reading with selected companies. Reliance wireless products and services president, SP Shukla said, " we are aggressively trying to get hold of the untapped data applications market in the mobile space. We already have host of applications running on our network and soon we will implement other customer friendly applications." Reliance is currently working on several new products like Closed User Group (CUG), VPNs, data connectivity or a mobile office through which, a corporate customer can access his/her office through Intranet. Other applications that are being worked on are mobile directory download, group SMSing, office mail access, vehicle tracking system, sales force automation, payment transaction applications, etc. The company is also doing cheaper e-governance projects and has recently received a request from the Tamil Nadu government to connect fair price (ration) shops. The company has also received a similar request for connecting 10,000 ration shops in Gujarat. According to the company, this can revolutionize the public distribution system in the country. Another product in the offing is Automated Meter Reading. The company is planning to work with BSES, a company, which Reliance recently acquired, to introduce pre-paid meters for BSES and various tariff plans for BSES’ customers. The company has recently introduced a SBI mobile ATM in a boat on Kochi backwater. Similarly, Hindustan Lever home delivery boys are now carrying Reliance Infocomm's Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminal to process cards in select Mumbai suburbs and petrol pumps across the Mumbai-Pune Expressway too are now having the same PoS terminals. Reliance FWT applications are not only restricted to wireless ATMs and POS terminals. Two other applications that have become commercial successfully are the online bill payment and online lottery. Currently, Reliance IndiaMobile phone bills can be paid through secure online credit card payment. This can be done through any Masters, Diners and Visa cards with the payment gateway from Citibank.
