Need Advice On Dell™ Inspiron M101Z
Arun replied to commonman's topic in General Technical Discussion
Other than the battery life Dell will be a good choice. You cannot get warranty extended for the battery. Buying a battery from Dell is an expensive affair. I got a replacement from eBay.com (from Hong Kong seller) for 1/3rd the price and is working well for now. -
It did work for me. I just checked how I renamed and I see it as "otacerts.tmp" - maybe you can try that?

Fundraiser for MEID Registration and EVDO Activation on Reliance CDMA
Arun replied to Arun's topic in The Lounge
A seamless process would have been implemented if it was being done as a business; but it isn't a business deal as the money paid is a donation/contribution (as there isn't much expense for the actual process). The aim here is raise the funds equally among all members interested rather than expecting a few members to shell out the whole money for the overall expenses in the past and future. BTW, I have updated the FAQ (in the first post) with a couple more questions I received. -
Sure do, I am not sure how much it is going to bottom out in this free fall to think about averaging

These schemes will eventually fail for sure because the business model isn't sustainable. So those who make money before it goes bust will be lucky and those who don't by that time will feel betrayed. Life moves on then and probably another scheme pops up. The "Kanak Dhara" scheme which vikasmahajanz was explaining 3 years ago with the same enthusiasm as this one doesn't exist now - http://www.kanakdhara.com is showing a parked page.

Reliance CDMA or GSM BlackBerry service?
-
You have to depend on third party exchange services who will do that for a fee. However there is no guarantee that it will be safe. It certainly isn't legal. At some point of time the transactions could be in scrutiny by Moneybookers or PayPal and may request for an explanation for the money sent or received to the "third party exchange account". Your account can get limited if such a situation arise, so it is better not to do it.

Updated: Pesky SMSs/Calls: Major relief to users from March 21, 2011
Arun replied to Arun's topic in Indian Telecom / General News
It will probably. I received an SMS from Facebook SMS that I need to de-register from Do Not Call registry to continue receiving SMS from February now. Well, one more month of pesky calls/SMS is awaiting: TRAI pushes back deadline for checking pesky calls to March 1 Monday, January 31, 2011, 20:00 IST Press Trust of India Mobile subscribers looking for respite from unsolicited marketing calls and SMSes will now have to wait for another month, as telecom regulator Trai has extended the date for implementation of guidelines to check the pesky calls to March 1. The delay is on account of change in allocated series from ''70'' to ''140'' for telemarketers, who have now been given time till March 1 to adhere to the new rules on pesky calls. "On January 31, 2011, DoT has communicated a fresh numbering series beginning with the number ''140'' in place of''70'' number series. Communicating the same to all the access providers and carrying out the required changes would require time," Trai said in a statement. In view of the new series, telecom operators will have to effect a number of technical changes like configuration ofnetworks and putting in place filtering solutions to stop Unsolicited Commercial Calls (UCC). "Therefore, the Authority is compelled to change the dateof implementation of operationalisation of the ''Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations,2010'' to March 1, 2011," the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) added. Earlier, it had set a deadline of January 1, 2011 for operators to implement the UCC or telemarketing guidelines. This was, however, extended to January 31. As per the new order, customer preference registrations would begin from February 10, which would be effective within seven days. Unlike the previous guidelines, which only provided for a''Do Not Call'' Registry, the new regulations give customers different options to list under the ''fully blocked'' category(Do Not Call Registry) or the ''partially blocked'' category. The second option will allow subscribers to receive SMSes in the categories chosen by them. Meanwhile, the registration of telemarketers has started on January 15. Operators, who were facing difficulties in implementing the filtering mechanism mandated by Trai, have been seeking extension of the deadline until March 31. "However, Trai did not grant this request but provided an extension only until January 31 for implementation of the filtering feature," said GSM operators lobby COAI Director General Rajan S Mathew. That deadline, however, has now been pushed back by a month to March 1. << updated topic title, hope I don't have to next month also! >> -

"Unusual Traffic Detected" message when using Google with BSNL 3G
Arun replied to Narrow_Band_Minus's topic in General Technical Discussion
It is because your ISP (BSNL 3G) is assigning your PC with a shared IP address which is shared by many users at a time. Google has anti-DoS protection in place and when many users access Google using the same IP address it would detect the traffic as a possible DoS attack and hence it tries to block your access by showing up the error message. BSNL must be trying to cut their costs by assigning a shared IP for all users or maybe due to the scarcity of IPv4 addresses. They have to implement IPv6 and start providing dynamic non-shared IP for each user. I think BSNL also offers static IP address at a cost if you are looking for an immediate solution. It isn't Google alone that you will face issues with. Some files sharing websites like Rapidshare, Megaupload, etc. will also deny you access if other users are downloading at the same time using the same IP. Another issue is that BSNL harbors the most number of spammers (see: http://www.uceprotect.net/en/rblcheck.php ) and many mail servers will have the IPs blocked as well and you won't even be able to send email if the recipient mail server is using a blacklist that lists the IP as a spammer. The same applies for websites that use spam check database to prevent spammers from signing up as well (I hope "inception" is reading this )- 1 reply

The Most Awaited MNP Finally Introduced!
Arun replied to SumitVerma's topic in Mobile Number Portability (MNP)
Vodafone reaps rich harvest from MNP Indian Express Thursday, Jan 27 2011, 01:40 hrs After years of waiting, mobile number portability, or the technology to change your telecom operator while keeping the same number, was launched pan-India on January 20. Initial data from the first four days of number portability accessed by FE throw up some interesting trends, in terms of operators as well as regions. Vodafone-Essar, the country’s third-largest mobile operator has won hands down in terms of consumer preference. It has emerged as the clear winner with a net 61,789 users wanting to switch to it, followed by Aircel (28,088) and Idea Cellular (15,220). The country’s largest mobile operator Bharti Airtel is at No.4 with a net of only 10,412 users wanting to port to it. In terms of losers, it seems there’s neck-and-neck competition between state-owned BSNL and the country’s second-largest mobile operator Reliance Communications. While BSNL’s net loss of customers going by the initial trend stands at 51,462, RCom follows closely at 48,089. Among telecom circles, Gujarat ranks on top with 30,627 subscribers so far sending in their requests to port. Maharashtra follows with 25,000 requests and Rajasthan is at the third place with 19,706 requests. The maximum number of Gujarat’s subscribers (10,845) want to port to Vodafone. Similarly, in Maharashtra, the first choice is Idea Cellular with 11,502 wanting to port to it. In Rajasthan too, Vodafone is the first choice with 5,984 wanting to shift to it. Among metros, Delhi ranked the highest with 15,449 users wanting to port their numbers, almost half of whom (7,218) want to move to Vodafone. Mumbai ranks second with 11,220 wanting to port and once again Vodafone is the first choice (4,812). Only 1,121 subscribers in Kolkata have so far evinced interest in porting and their choice is also once again Vodafone (469).
