Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has decided to set a minimum download speed for 2G and 3G services. In this regard TRAI has published a consultation paper and will listen to public opinion till May 5.

TRAI intends to set the minimum download speed for 3G and CDMA EVDO services at 1 Mbps with success rate of 95 per cent. Whereas for GSM and CDMA 2G the minimum should be 56 kbps while that for CDMA high speed data it should be 512 kbps is what the regulator feels. TRAI may also ask telecom operators to mention the minimum download speed that a data service will deliver in a tariff plan.

Currently there are no rules to keep a tab on dropping speeds. Its a commendable step since customers are promised high speeds but these are rarely touched.

According to TRAI, the telecom consumers availing wireless data services are not aware of the minimum download speed being offered to them by the TSPs. Generally, the tariff plans offered by the TSPs are based on the volume of data usage for various technologies, without any clarity about the speed being offered to consumers. Also, there is no commitment of minimum download speed while offering a tariff plan.

TRAI has now proposed that all Indian internet users provide their inputs to them, so that the telecom companies are regulated and mandated to provide a minimum internet speed under all circumstances, something like this:

    clip_image001.jpg

TRAI added, Another alternative could be that the service providers, along with the tariff and the details of data services offered, also specify a minimum download speed that will be applicable for each plan or scheme. Accordingly, along with each tariff plan whenever they are advertised, through website, telephone bills, sale vouchers, complaint centres, and sales office, the minimum download speed is also necessarily mentioned. Moreover, whenever there is a change in the plan or speed, subscriber should be properly informed and the same should also be published through suitable advertisement. The service provider shall inform the minimum download speed along with the tariff plan while filing tariff to TRAI.

TRAI has asked all Indians to send in their suggestions and ideas latest by May 5, 2014 at this email id: advqos@trai.gov.in - Counter comments can be sent by May 12, 2014

  2. RIL plans to launch Jio products & services with 2,000 Digital Xpress Mini outlets

    The Economic Times - 22 Apr, 2014, 04.00AM IST

Reliance Industries (RIL) plans to open 2,000 exclusive outlets, Digital Xpress Mini, in the current fiscal year to sell the company's telecom services, smartphones, tablets and also accessories of other brands.

These stores will be about 250 square feet and sell the upcoming services of Reliance Jio Infocomm. Reliance Jio plans to provide, later this year, all telecom services, including mobile phones and fourth generation high speed internet services.

India's largest telecom services provider Bharti Airtel operates 1,700 Airtel-branded stores with majority of them operated by franchisees. In the last 14 months, Airtel rolled-out 100 such companyowned company-operated or socalled COCO stores.

Reliance plans COCO format for all its upcoming stores to maintain uniformity in customer services, an official said on condition of anonymity.

Communication and mobility products category were growing at a faster pace within the technology retail segment of Reliance Digital, a company spokesperson said. "Driven by rapid technology advancements, this category is witnessing faster replacement cycles.

The new concept, Digital Xpress Mini, is aimed at providing a differentiated technology shopping experience to consumers and thereby reinforcing Reliance Digital's position as a front-runner in the emerging mobile retail segment," the spokesman said.

Reliance is the latest in a string of companies planning microstores. Apple, that had so far shied away from going directly to the neighbourhoods and restricted their stores to high street and malls, is now planning to aggressively push with smaller stores in large and tier-II cities in a renewed India-specific strategy.

  3. :previous:

Ok, just checking if booking through a 3rd party agent (goibibo) was the reason or not. Virgin Atlantic customer care told me that online management is not available for my booking since I have more than 4 flights in the booking (mine starts from Trivandrum). For seat selection they said I can call over phone and select. I booked it before March 31. What are the other options available in the booking management page?

  4. I got my B1 visa approved in Chennai last week. I do agree that a decision will be taken based on the DS-160 application and the visa officer just takes a final decision during the interview. So filling up your profile details properly in the DS-160 is key. The waiting time at the consulate was horrible though as I needed to wait for 3+ hours. :bash:

I got the ticket on Virgin Atlantic as well. Are you able to manage the booking through virgin-atlantic.com using your name & PNR?

  6. Reliance Jio testing 4G services in 10 locations
    Mumbai - March 30, 2014

    The Hindu Business Line

Gearing up to launch fourth generation (4G) mobile operations, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL) is testing the services across 10 locations in the country. The telecom arm of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), India’s largest private sector company by revenues, intends to increase this to about 20 locations in a fortnight’s time, according to sources close to the development. The tests are being conducted on 4G on WiFi (a technology that enables wireless access of Internet), and 4G over optical fibre cable (OFC) across the locations, the sources, who declined to be identified before a formal announcement said.

When contacted an RJIL spokesperson declined to comment.

The present 10 locations are mainly in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Ahmedabad. In Mumbai, 4G tests are on at IIT Bombay, and at Reliance Corporate Park and Inorbit Mall at Navi Mumbai, Vashi. The testings are on at about seven locations at various malls and other places in Ahmedabad. RJIL intends to extend the testing to another 10 locales in Gujarat, including in Baroda, in the next two weeks. “Further, the company would slowly extend the testing to other towns and cities,” one of the sources said, without divulging further details.

RJIL, which holds 1800 MHz spectrum across 14 circles and 2300 MHz across 22 circles, plans to launch services by October or December this year. In addition to telecom services, it is also planning to offer TV channels on its fourth generation (4G) broadband network. Firming up its rollout plans, the company recently entered into tower-sharing agreement with telecom tower firms such as Viom Networks, Bharti Infratel and Reliance Communications.

    Arun,

Can we add a link to our sell thread on buysellweb.in in our signature at rimweb.in?

I see, many people are not aware of new portal.

Yes, you can update the link in your signature

  8. Since the member database merger procedure could not be achieved successfully yet, I have removed the login share feature and I have replicated the same member database (of RIMweb.in) into the new Buy-Sell forum. So instead of sharing the login, the same account that you have at RIMweb.in can now be used at BuySell.RIMweb.in forums and it will work as an independent account seamlessly.

The topics and posts over the past few days after re-opening the Buy-Sell forums had to be imported into the new database and I have done that for most topics and posts. I haven't imported the topics where the seller updated that it has been sold out. Since the topics/posts were imported to the database today, those topics and posts will show today's time stamp unfortunately. You can re-post if you notice that any of your post or topic is missing but I think I imported most of them.

I have also given the Buy Sell forums a new branding and you can access the Buy-Sell forums directly at http://www.buysellweb.in

Tapatalk is another reason why I opted for this approach as Tapatalk developers informed me that they do not support a login share setup and will require internal independent login system. So Tapatalk is fixed now and can add your account on Tapatalk for BuySellWeb.in

  9. an insight into the cable laying process by Reliance Jio:

The equipment namely Vermeer horizontal directional drilling equipment is used for digging earth for laying cables. The equipment inserts 200m length pipe into the earth. "Without engaging more labourers and without digging a stretch, the cable is laid. Really it is a surprise. But we do not why the cable is laid," said S Vellaisamy, a resident of Pudhur.

In the city, four such equipment have been deployed, said a contractor named Ali. The cable work in the city is being done for the Reliance Group. "Cable-laying works are on after Reliance, which will provide 4G services, secured permission from the corporation,' Ali added.

The equipment, which costs Rs 1.5 crore, obviates the need for huge manual force. It will speed up work in less time, he said. It can cover 200 m within two hours if the path is clear. If there is any obstruction like rock, the direction will be changed, he said.

  10. Arun, How's your experience with Cisco DPC3825 modem's Wi-Fi range? Does they can be operated simultaneously in 2.4Ghz and 5.0 Ghz and how's the configuration options of the device? More over could you please share the MTU set by them?

How's the data transfer rate enabling VPN and any points to note while enabling personal or enterprise VPN access?

WiFi range is less than the other Netgear and Cisco WiFi routers I have used for ADSL connections. So if you have a very big house then you might struggle. Only 2.4 GHz is available. There are a lot of configuration options in the modem settings page and allows you to control most things you would normally need. The MTU set in the configuration page is 1472.

The DNS servers ADL assigns are

    202.88.231.2

    202.88.231.10

    202.88.238.3

    Mine shows: 202.88.238.3 and 202.88.238.5

Yes after much chaos and confusion i manage to get a static ip from them. Still beats me why they want a network diagram which i drew in MS Paint :P Last few days went through hell with their customer support. Out of the 5mbps i was supposed to get, i was consistently getting just 1.9mbps down and 3.1mbps up on speedtest check! They just kept saying its all fine at our end and blah blah.

Finally got someone to come check. he came he checked called someone and it was back to normal. He said it was a server issue! Go figure :P

Lol, I made the diagram using MS Word :P The explanation they gave is that it is some requirement from the telecom regulator when a static IP is leased.

BTW speedtest.net has now added Trivandrum as a test server location and it is provided by Asianet :hi2:

  11. ... they would decide your visa much in advance (based on your info provided on visa form) and only screen you on personal interview ...

I doubt they would take a real decision based on the DS-160 form especially since there are no supporting documents submitted along with it. For example if you are applying for a B1 visa, the form does not ask you about the specifics of the business or conference that you are going to do/attend. Other than the monthly income and job profile, the rest of the form is pretty generic and unless you mentioned something in the negative (for questions like have you been arrested or convicted before or drug addict, etc.) the decision based on the form (if at all there was any) will usually be positive itself, I think.
