  1. Source The broadband segment in the country seems to be hotting up. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has launched the fastest broadband connection in the country, offering speeds of up to 24 Mbps. This comes after Bharti Airtel claimed to be offering the fastest broadband after it launched a 16 Mbps line. BSNL's high-speed broadband is being made available with Very high speed Digital Subscriber Loop (VDSL) Technology. To avail themselves of the service, subscribers will have to pay Rs 4,999 a month for speeds up to 16 Mbps and Rs 9,999 a month for speeds up to 24 Mbps. However, the service is currently not available for everyone. Only those customers who are close to BSNL's broadband exchange nodes can subscribe to the service. While 24 Mbps broadband will be available to customers who are at a distance of up to 500 metres from the exchange, 16 Mbps broadband is available to customers up to around 1 km from the exchange. BSNL does not have the capability to offer high-speed connection over a longer distance at present. For other subscribers, BSNL is already offering broadband service with speeds ranging from 256 kbps up to 8 Mbps. BSNL offers its broadband services with value-added services such asgames on demand, music and video on demand, Web conferencing, Virtual Private Network on IPTV, video tutoring, video surveillance, Web co-location, Web-hosting. Broadband speed in India is lagging behind other countries. For example, in Japan consumers can get up to 100 Mbps connection. Subscriber growth is also sluggish in India with only 8 million broadband users till now.

  3. Go Vegan

Go veg to save the globe? - The Hindu ENVIRONMENT: Load your plate with veggies. It could be a simple way to save the planet from global warming, according to some experts. HEMA VIJAY writes Can the food that we load our plates with actually affect climate? Surprisingly, the answer is “Yes”. What this means is, it's time we did our bit to save the planet from global warming by simply going vegetarian! Did you know that rearing livestock for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the fuel guzzling cars and trucks in the world put together? Consider this. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that direct emissions from meat production account for 18 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for global warming. Apparently, the livestock industry generates 37 per cent of the total methane (a gas which is 22 times more powerful than carbon-dioxide in warming the globe) in the air. Besides this direct impact, much of the environmental damage that our planet is now reeling under can be attributed to the livestock industry. The World Watch issue (July/August 2004) concludes: The human appetite for animal flesh is a driving force behind virtually every major category of environmental damage now threatening the future of the globe — deforestation, erosion, fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, social injustice, destabilisation of communities and the spread of disease. How does this happen? Explains P. Sudhakar, joint director, CPR Environment Education Centre, “Ruminant animals like cattle produce methane (a powerful global warming gas) during their digestive process. Also, these animals require vast quantities of fodder for their growth, which in turn depletes the land and water resources available in the world”. Besides, meat eating indirectly degrades the environment, because forests are destroyed for cattle ranching. “As of 2004, nearly three million acres of Amazonian rainforests have been converted into soy farms to feed chicken and other animals meant for Western markets,” Sudhakar informs. The Indian situation is more pathetic, considering that no such survey has been attempted so far. Further, more fossil fuel is consumed to produce and transport animal-based foods. “Meanwhile, 15 of the world's 17 major ocean fisheries are either depleted or overexploited, which in turn jeopardises the oceanic ecosystems,” points out environmental consultant, K. Rangaswamy. According to the American Dietetic Association, ‘a vegetarian diet can provide all the nutrients required by man, besides actively promoting health. Fruits, vegetables, greens, grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and lentils can make a healthy meal, the ADA states. And it is a myth that only meat eaters develop strength and stamina. Vegans include legions of greats in every field from scientists and statesmen to athletes — Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Alva Edison, Viswanathan Anand, Olympic swimmer Murray Rose, and tennis ace Peter Burwash to name a few. Then, of course, it is a medical fact that a vegan diet cuts the risk of heart disease, blood pressure, osteoporosis, obesity, constipation and even cancer (especially cancers of the breast, prostate and colon). But forget the ethics and the health benefits of going veg. Leave out the meat from your plate, just so that we pass on a liveable planet to our kids. WARNING BELL * Rearing livestock for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the fuel guzzling cars and trucks in the world put together! * The livestock industry is a prime driver behind environmental damages like deforestation, erosion, fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, etc. * Drain on water: 3900 litres of water are required to produce one kilogram of chicken while 900 litres of water are sufficient for one kilogram of grain. * It also takes far more fossil fuel to produce and transport animal based foods. * Major ocean fisheries are now depleted or overexploited, which threatens the oceanic ecosystem.

  6. Nokia C-Series Shows Up

Nokia C6 Exists, To Go On Sale Soon A higher-end model than the C5 We all knew about Nokia's upcoming C-Series handsets when images of one of the C-Series devices was leaked a few days ago. The first of the C-Series phones are expected to be announced at the Nokia conference at Barcelona this very month. To make things more obvious, the Nokia C6, yet another C-Series phone, was recently approved by the independent U.S. government agency Federal Communications Commission (FCC) so that it could be officially sold in the country. The new handset will be known as the C6 - obviously a higher-end model than the C5 whose images were leaked a few weeks ago. As it turns out, the C6 is known as the Nokia RM-612 internally. The C6 features Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, quad-band GSM connectivity, and tri-band WCDMA connectivity (900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz). As of now, we have no details as to when the C6 would make it to a retail store near you. However, there is a chance that this could be announced along with the C5 and the C3.

Blind man's sight restored 'by having tooth implanted in eye' Source London (PTI): In a rare surgical feat, doctors in Britain have successfully restored the sight of a blind man by transplanting his tooth into his eye. A team, led by Christopher Lui of Sussex Eye Hospital, carried out the rare procedure on 42-year-old Martin Jones who was blinded for 12 years after a tub of hot aluminium exploded in his face as he worked at a scrapyard. In fact, the procedure began when one of Jones' canine teeth was removed and converted into a holder for a special optical lens by drilling a hole in it. The tooth was inserted into his cheek for three months to enable it to grow absolute new tissue and blood vessels. Then finally came the delicate operation to insert the tooth, complete with the fitted lens into Jones right eyeball. And, within two weeks of the final operation to implant the tooth in his eyeball his sight returned, 'The Daily Telegraph' reported. "I met my wife when I was blind and when I found out there was a chance I would get my sight back the first person I wanted to see was her. "The doctors took the bandages off and it was like looking through water and then I saw this figure and it was her. She's wonderful and lovely. It was unbelievable to see her for the first time. "When I first heard about the technique I couldn't believe it. (Now) I feel fantastic getting my sight back. I can't really describe it -- it's beyond words. I was blind for 12 years and when my sight came back everything had changed," Jones was quoted as saying.

Indian Vegetable May Slow Or Kill Breast Cancer Cells St. Louis, MO, United States (AHN) - A vegetable extract commonly used for cooking in India and China has shown promise in its ability to kill breast cancer cells and prevent them from spreading. Researchers at Saint Louis University said in a statement that bitter melon was shown effective in killing breast cancer cells in a controlled lab setting. Lead researcher Dr. Ratna Ray said she will next test its effectiveness in an animal model. Previous research has shown bitter melon can lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels, Ray said in a statement. It is commonly used in India and China as a folk medicine to treat diabetes. Ray said it is still too early to determine its effectiveness as a cancer fighter, but she said initial results justify more research. Ray's report appears in the March 1 edition of the journal Cancer Research. Suspected carcinogen found in fruit juice Scientists are worried about the long-term effects of exposure to suspected carcinogen antimony; Copenhagen researchers find high levels of substance in juice Researchers at the University of Copenhagen have found extremely high levels of the toxic substance antimony in prepackaged juice drinks. The scientists studied 42 different containers of fruit juice drinks from Denmark, Scotland and Greece and found levels of antimony that exceeded the recommended EU guidelines of 5mcg per litre. Previous studies have found that antimony trioxide, which is a suspected carcinogen, had leached into bottled water after being used in the production of plastic drinks containers that use the substance polythene terepthalate (PET). Claus Hansen, a PhD student at the department of pharmacology, and his research team speculated that the citric acid found in fruit juices speeded up the leaching process of the chemical. The results, published in the Journal of Environmental Monitoring, found that many cases breached the recommended guidelines for antimony content. In one blackcurrant juice, the team found antimony concentrations 2.5 times that of the recommended EU limit for drinking water. Other levels measured in concentrated juice drinks found levels that were almost 10 times the recommended amount. However, because the team also found levels of antimony in juice drinks packaged in TetraPak containers, which do not contain PET, the researchers could not conclusively lay the blame on PET bottles. Hansen said the high concentrations of antimony could be a combination of many factors, including the quality of packaging, the storage temperature, the production process, or from sugar-aided extraction. He also stated that just because the source of the antimony hadn’t been determined, it didn’t lessen the concern that such high concentrations had been found. ‘You would have to drink a lot of blackcurrant juice to go over the recommended maximum dose, which is why there’s no antimony limits for drinking water or soft drinks. But we can’t be sure that the high level we found is not harmful. Antimony trioxide is suspected of causing cancer and we are worried about the long term effects of it,’ he said. The team is now trying to find the source of the contamination and test whether sugar acts as an extracting agent for antimony in PET materials. If this is found to be the case it could lead to restrictions in the use of PET plastics for packaging.

Fruit Extract Found to Kill Breast Cancer Cells ST. LOUIS, MO (ST. LOUIS PUBLIC RADIO) - New research out of Saint Louis University finds that a fruit extract can kill breast cancer cells in the lab. The fruit, called bitter melon, is a popular ingredient in Indian and Chinese cooking, and is also used in traditional medicine to treat diabetes. SLU pathologist Ratna Ray led the study. She wanted to see whether bitter melon has any anti-tumor activity. To do that, she tested it on breast cancer cells and on normal, non-cancerous controls. Ray found that while the bitter melon extract had practically no effect on normal human cells, it killed or slowed the growth of the cancerous ones. She says the next step will be to test whether the extract can prevent cancer growth in mice. She hopes to have those results later this year. Her current study is published in the March 1 edition of Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Is this true ?? Threats have been arose that Many shopping Malls have Hidden camera in their trial room. How to detect such hidden cameras that are miss-used in the shopping malls? This can be done if you have a mobile phone along with you when you are at shopping mall. Confirm that your cell is in working condition before you enter the trial room of any shopping mall. check that you can make a call from your cell before you enter it. After entering into the trial room if your cell could not make a call then you can detect that there is a HIDDEN CAMERA in that trial room. This is due to the Interference of fiber optic rays during Implementation. Be cautious before you enter a trial room.

  24. Source The world’s No. 1 search engine launched Google Buzz, which allows users to quickly share messages, Web links and photos with friends and colleagues directly within Gmail, the company’s popular email product Mountain view, California: Google Inc is tapping its huge network of Gmail users and Web surfers to create a Buzz that it hopes will help it catch up with online social networking leaders Facebook and Twitter. The world’s No. 1 search engine launched Google Buzz, which allows users to quickly share messages, Web links and photos with friends and colleagues directly within Gmail, the company’s popular email product. Also, a new arsenal of products make the new social networking features compatible with mobile devices such as smartphones based on Google’s Android operating system. Google’s new technology mimics some of the key features of popular social networking services like Twitter and Facebook, which are increasingly challenging Google for Web surfers’ online time. By integrating Buzz directly into Gmail, Google hopes to jumpstart its social networking push by leveraging the large pool of Gmail users. “There’s always been a giant social network underneath Gmail,” said Google product manager Todd Jackson at a press event at Google’s Mountain View, California headquarters on Tuesday. Gmail is the third most popular Web-based email in the world, with 176.5 million unique visitors in December, according to comScore. Microsoft Corp’s Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo Inc’s Mail were No. 1 and No. 2, with 369.2 million and 303.7 million unique visitors, respectively. Google will roll out Buzz to Gmail users over the next few days, it said. Status messages that users publish on Buzz and flag as viewable to everyone will be automatically indexed by Google’s search engine and be available within Google’s recently launched real-time search results. Google said users can also keep messages private by sharing only with customized groups of friends and colleagues. Executives said users can easily share content from various Google online properties like photo-sharing service Picasa and video site YouTube. Content from certain third-party services such as Twitter can also be shared, although users can only view Twitter messages — or Tweets — within Buzz and cannot publish new messages to Twitter’s service. Executives said that Buzz is not currently able to display messages that originated on Facebook, the world’s No. 1 social network with 400 million active users. “The fact that Gmail did not connect and allow broadcasts out to Twitter and Facebook could be a real challenge to them,” said Forrester Research social media analyst Augie Ray. But he noted that Google’s experience serving Web surfers’ relevant search results could be a strength for the company in the social media segment as users are increasingly inundated with status messages. Google has tried to ride the social networking wave before, launching the Orkut social network in 2004. But while Orkut is big in certain overseas markets like Brazil, it has failed to attract as many users as social giants like Facebook and MySpace in the United States. In building a social network on top of an email product, Google is following in the footsteps of Yahoo, which has taken a similar approach in efforts to keep up with Facebook but has seen lackluster results according to analysts. Google co-founder Sergey Brin said he was not deterred by other companies’ experiences in melding email and social networking. “I wouldn’t discount something because it’s similar in the one sense ... to something else in the past that may not be that successful,” Brin said on the sideline of the event following the main presentations. Google appears to be putting a heavy emphasis on mobile and location-based capabilities, weaving Buzz technology into the mobile versions of its flagship website and its online maps products. The company also announced a special mobile application for Buzz that will run on smartphones based on Google’s Android software, Windows Mobile and the Symbian operating system. Google shares rose $2.97 to close at $536.44 on Nasdaq.
