  1. Source New SMS-based service to be offered in association with India Post. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) plans to launch in the near future a mobile banking platform that will help a mobile subscriber send money orders electronically through SMSes. The SMS by the sender will be encashable at all post offices in the country. In the first phase of BSNL’s plan, anyone who wishes to send a money through the money (order) transfer service will have to go to his nearest post office and transfer the money by way of an SMS. The SMS will contain a unique code. The person who receives this SMS can go to his nearest post office and collect the money by showing the code. This process is expected to save a lot of money as the SMS will reach in real time. This will also help those who do not have a proper address for physical delivery of the money order. Groceries on SMS In the next stage of BSNL’s plans, a person will be able to use his mobile phone for even buying goods at the local kirana shop or any other store, with the help of an electronic authorisation from his bank on his mobile phone. BSNL Board Director (Consumer Mobility) R K Agarwal said the platform had been test-piloted in Chandigarh and the state-run telecom major expects to roll out the service in association with the postal department, after getting the Reserve Bank of India’s approval. “The real revolution is going to come when we launch our mobile banking services, on which BSNL is actively working. We have test-piloted a platform in Chandigarh, on which money could be transferred electronically through money orders by sending an SMS,” Agarwal told Business Standard. He, however, said RBI was cautious in its guidelines for mobile banking, as a result of which the proposed roll-out would happen only in a phased manner. “RBI has a cautious policy as it has to check for frauds that may occur,” he added. BSNL intends to help users buy merchandise with electronic authorisation from banks. Agarwal said SBI and YES Bank had come forward to participate in BSNL’s mobile banking service platform. Mobile banking is a concept where you tie up with different banks and system aggregators. “We have already tied up some system integrators, including Obopay,” he added. 3G rings in higher Arpu The launch of 3G cellular services has helped BSNL get an average revenue per user (ARPU) that is 40 per cent higher than that from 2G subscribers, Agarwal said. BSNL has about 850,000 3G mobile subscribers at present, which is expected to go up to a million by the end of the current financial year. In the next financial year, the company aims to add two million 3G subscribers. “All 3G services take some time to take off. Customers have started taking our 3G services only since December last year,” said Agarwal. So far, BSNL has rolled out 3G services in 318 cities, which will be extended to 760 cities before the end of March next year. BSNL expects to derive a revenue of Rs 10,500 crore from mobile services, including 3G.

The Sony Ericsson commands decided that it would be right to regard this slot just as a contract handset maker, for that reason Sony Ericsson declined the offer in a kind manner. Later it was decided that HTC would make the Nexus One. The company wanted to offer its own version of the handset. 5. Source Using mobile phones as a wallet is not an idea that appeals to many prospective consumers, suggests a study. Esther Swilley, an assistant professor of marketing, Kansas State University, said cell phone users were wary of putting banking accounts, identification and other sensitive information onto a device that gets left in cars, buried in the bottoms of purses and lost between sofa cushions. Swilley said: "It was the risk that was involved, and people didn't want to take the risk." The expert, however, predicted consumers would be more willing to accept keeping an airline, movie or sports ticket on their phone. Swilley said: "I think what's going to happen for consumers to accept a wallet phone is that it's going to have to go in stages. So now we have everybody''s telephone number on our phones. Next you will be doing airline tickets and things like that on your phone. Next thing you know, everything in your wallet is going to be on the phone." The study was due to appear in the Journal of Consumer Marketing.

  14. Mobile number portability from 1st week of May in Chennai and Bangalore Mobile number portability (MNP) will be started from 1st week of May, 2010 in Chennai and Bangalore cities. mobile number portability allows mobile users to start using services of other operators with out need of changing mobile no. With this MNP, customers will be able to take benefit of competitive services of different mobile operators by using the same mobile no. Announcing the mobile number portability launch, “While number portability was proposed to be achieved by March, there are certain issues relating to getting security clearances, which will be sorted out soon, and we will introduce portability by May first week,” said Mr Raja, IT Minister. Mobile number portability will further decrease the mobile charges customers pay per month. Mobile operators which have tricky schemes where they offer one service at discount and charge heavily for other services will loose heavily in Mobile number portability since customer can easily shift to other operators. Mobile number portability essentially minimizes barriers to shift from one operator to another. Mobile number portability has been delayed several times in India. Mobile operators are also need to prepare their infra structure to provide Mobile number portability services to their customers. Under MNP, customers will have to pay one time subscription charge for new operator. Also if users are not satisfied, they can shift back to previous mobile operator.

  17. Videocon to launch mobile services in Mumbai, Chennai next month Videocon’s foray into mobile services has been delayed. Starting with Mumbai and Chennai, the company now plans to roll out its GSM mobile services from March Consumer electronics giant Videocon Group will launch its mobile services in Mumbai and Chennai by March, according to a senior official. Earlier, there were reports that the company would launch its GSM mobile services in Mumbai by 20th February. Although the company has not fixed any date for launching its services, it is planning to increase the number of its retail outlets across the country to facilitate its foray. “We are launching our GSM mobile services by next month in Mumbai and Chennai which will require us to add more outlets. We are planning to add approximately 500 or more outlets across the country over a year,” said SM Hegde, director, Videocon Group. Mumbai is one of the busiest telecom circles in India, which delivers a large chunk of revenues to various mobile operators. Average revenue per user (ARPU) of many mobile operators in India is highest in the Mumbai circle. Earlier this month, while speaking with PTI in Davos, Videocon Industries' president and vice chairman Pradeepkumar N Dhoot had said that the company plans to cover the entire country with its GSM mobile services within the next 18 months. Datacom, a subsidiary of Videocon Group, was one of the eight new operators who were given licences in January 2008 to provide nationwide cellular services. Datacom has now been renamed as Videocon Telecommunication Ltd, which has earmarked an investment of Rs9,000 crore and is looking at becoming profitable in three-five years. Currently, Videocon owns about 350 retail outlets and has 350 franchise outlets across India. It has three retail brands under its portfolio DIGIworld, NEXT Retail India Ltd and Planet M. However, the company says that the number of new retail outlets could go up, depending on demand. “We might increase the number of outlets from 500 to 1,000 according to the demand in the market,” said Mr Hegde. Videocon is planning to invest about Rs20 crore-Rs25 crore annually into its retail business, he added. Videocon’s NEXT Retail is a multi-brand and multi-product showroom, Planet M is a music retail & electronic appliance showroom and DIGIworld is the company’s own brand retail business. DIGIworld has a major presence in North India.
