  6. Source NEW DELHI: India’s 560 million cellphone users will pay an extra 2% of their mobile bills as R&D cess to boost the country’s manufacturing of telecom equipment, in case the government accepts a communications ministry proposal. If implemented, this will add another levy to mobile users who currently pay 12% service tax and a 2% education cess on their bills. The telecom department first floated this proposal in 2006, but did not press for implementation. It now wants to revive this option of imposing an R&D cess, an internal department note said. This is part of a 14-point strategy, which the department of telecom (DoT) is advocating to transform India to a telecom manufacturing hub. “It is estimated that the requirement of telecom equipment would be over Rs 500,000 crore till the year 2015,” the department’s internal note said, adding, “However, despite the growth of market many folds, share of indigenous equipment has fallen down from 74% in 2003-04 to 30% in 2008-09.” Some of the 14-point turnaround strategies have been implemented over the past few months. For instance, last week, the government issued a directive mandating foreign gear makers to manufacture core telecom equipment locally or mandatorily transfer technology to Indian manufacturers within a three-year period. Another reason for the indigenous push for telecom network equipment relates to the security threat posed by imported hardware. The home ministry had repeatedly warned that equipment vendors may install back-door entries, remote logic facilities and also design Trojan horses in networks and hardware they sell here. These could be used to remotely bring down the network or monitor the voice and data traffic on it, security agencies say. To counter this threat, last month, the Centre armed itself with powers to seize imported telecom network equipment that failed to pass security tests. In December 2009, the telecoms department directive said all telecoms network equipment and related hardware must pass security test before deployment. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, in his budget last month, allotted resources for building a national test to scrutinise all imported telecom networks equipment before they can be installed here. The test lab and security clearance for all imported equipment were also part of the DoT committee note to promote indigenous manufacture. Other measures include rationalisation and reduction of the existing tax structure to ensure procuring locally-manufactured equipment is more economical, tax breaks for service providers who source hardware manufactured in the country, easier loans and financing schemes for setting up telecom gear plants and providing soaps to companies that export telecoms equipment from India. The DoT report adds that multinational telecom vendors were fiercely marketing their products here as markets in developed world were saturated. “This is creating additional pressures in hindrance of development of indigenous manufacturing. Indigenous steps to catch up are further nullified by the rapid developments in technology. Hence holds steps have to be taken...,” the DoT note said. It also warns that Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) for the software developed by Indians were not used by them, but are begin sold back to the country.

  8. Nokia C-Series Shows Up

Nokia C3 Exists; Gets FCC Approval While the existence of the Nokia C5 and the C6 has been confirmed, let us remind you that there was another C-Series handset that had made its presence felt in rumorsville not long ago. That's right. We're talking about the Nokia C3. Well, in a recent development, the C3 has apparently cleared the FCC in U.S. The phone, which bears the internal model number RM-614, will soon see the assembly lines. The FCC website also has an image of the rear of the phone. It is clear by the looks of the phone that it is a low to mid-range segment device that would be targeted at emerging markets. It also appears wider than usual and might as well add a QWERTY keypad? But then, that bit is unconfirmed as of now. But then, it would make sense to have a QWERTY keypad on a phone that belongs to a series that focuses on social interaction and social networking. Going by the naming convention, the C3 might just be cheaper than the C5. The latter also happens to be one of the cheapest Nokia smartphones currently available. Will the C3 beat it in the price wars? It also boils down to the fact that if this phone indeed gets a QWERTY keypad, it could be positioned above the C5.

Cigarette filters have pig's blood? Cigarette filters may have traces of pig's blood, an Australian professor has said, adding the devout may find this "very offensive". Simon Chapman, a professor at the University of Sydney, said a recent Dutch research had identified 185 industrial uses of a pig - including the use of haemoglobin in cigarette filters. "I think that there would be some particularly devout groups who would find the idea that there were pig products in cigarettes to be very offensive," Chapman was qouted as saying by Australian AAP news agency. "The Jewish community certainly takes these matters extremely seriously and the Islamic community certainly do as well, as (so) would many vegetarians. "It just puts into hard relief the problem that the tobacco industry is not required to declare the ingredients of cigarettes ... they say 'that's our business' and a trade secret." The research found pig haemoglobin was being used to make cigarette filters more effective in blocking harmful chemicals before it entered a smoker's lungs. The professor said that one cigarette brand sold in Greece was confirmed to be using pig haemoglobin in its processes, Chapman said.

Alcohol linked to poor nutrition People who drink more are also likely to eat less fruit and consume more calories from a combination of alcoholic beverages and foods high in unhealthy fats and added sugars. Heavy drinking and dietary factors have independently been associated with cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and other chronic health problems. To examine the relationship between alcoholic beverage consumption, nutrient intakes, and diet quality, researchers analysed data on 8,155 men and 7,715 women in USA, aged = 20 years who reported their past-year alcoholic beverage consumption and 24-hour dietary intake. Alcoholic beverage consumption was defined by drinking status (never, former, current drinker) and, among current drinkers, by drinking level (number of drinks per day, on average: men <1 to =5; women <1 to =3). Among men, there was no association between drinking status and dietary intake of energy as well as most nutrients. Among women, former and current (compared to never) drinkers had significantly higher intakes of energy and several nutrients, and current drinkers had significantly lower total healthy eating index scores (current drinkers 59; never drinkers 63). Among current drinkers of both genders, as drinking level increased, intakes of energy and several nutrients significantly increased, whereas total healthy eating index scores significantly decreased (from 56 to 41 in men, and from 60 to 52 in women). Higher alcohol consumption was associated with poor diet quality, but these findings raise questions about whether the combination of alcohol misuse and poor diet might interact to further increase health risks. This could be explained by the higher energy intake from alcohol as well as other differences in food choices.

Vodafone adds more subscribers in Feb NEW DELHI: Vodafone Essar added the highest number of mobile users in the country last month beating market leader Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservices, in the world’s fastest-growing telecom market. 24. Tata Peoples Car Makes India Proud

Nano car bursts into flames, raising safety fears MUMBAI, India — Satish Sawant was proudly driving his first car home from the showroom: A brand-new silver Tata Nano, draped with a celebratory garland of marigolds. Then there was smoke. And then there was fire. Minutes after the software engineer's wife and five-year-old son clambered out of the back seat, smoke from the engine, located in the Nano's rear, erupted into flames that engulfed the tiny car. His ordeal showed just the latest problem with the low-cost Nano — raising fresh questions about safety and quality as top Indian carmaker Tata Motors sets its sights on global expansion and aims to ramp up production of the Nano with a new factory next month. "My wife now doesn't want to buy any car," Sawant said by phone from his home in northern Mumbai on Thursday. "She doesn't even want to go for a Mercedes." Starting around $2,500, the Nano has been heralded as the world's cheapest car, and was meant to usher in a safety revolution, which would get millions of families off dangerous motorbikes and into the cool comfort of an affordable car. Tata Motors, which also owns Jaguar and Land Rover, plans to start selling versions of the Nano in Europe in 2011, and later, in America. Tata Motors spokesman Debasis Ray said the company is investigating the incident but believes it to be a one-off problem rather than the result of faulty design or manufacture. "We believe it was a one-off stray incident," he said. "It did catch fire. We're trying to figure out what may have caused it." Tata has offered Sawant a replacement Nano or a refund. This is not the first time there have been customer complaints about the Nano, which has been feted with rave reviews and awards since its launch a year ago. Last fall, three customers in India complained that their Nanos started smoking. Tata Motors attributed that to a faulty electrical switch and said it had changed suppliers and done additional tests to rule out a recall or redesign. Ray said Thursday that the incidents are not related. The switch problem, he said, "has been comprehensively addressed." "Safety has never been an issue with Tata cars," he added. "They are one of the safest cars on Indian roads." But some say the Nano's smoke and fire problems are symptomatic of pervasive quality control issues at India's number three carmaker, which must be addressed before Tata can successfully take its brand global — especially in the wake of Toyota's massive recalls, which have left car buyers jittery about safety standards. "As of today, is Tata good enough to take on the world? I would say no," said Deepesh Rathore, an auto analyst at IHS Global Insight in New Delhi. "On quality standards, Tata barely makes the cut." There are fewer than 30,000 Nanos on the road today, which means on a percentage basis the problem rate is fairly high, he said. "The Nano is a wonderful product, but these incidents really tarnish the image of the car as well as the company," Rathore said. "This is the time for Tata to have a deep look at quality." He said the recent addition of Carl-Peter Forster, former head of General Motors in Europe, as group chief executive is a step in the right direction. "They've got a guy running the show now who knows how the industry should work," he said. "How soon will the effects be seen across the Tata product range? Well, that will take time." Meanwhile, Uruvashi Shah, manager of Ashapura Travel World, which runs a high-end taxi service, said she has gotten rid of all the Tata models in her fleet because they needed too much repair work. She prefers Toyota. "Corolla is quite good. There is a comfortable feel but the mechanical side is good too," she said.
  25. Source The concept of App Stores (application stores), which first became popular in the USA when Apple introduced the same for its iPhone, appears to be entering India in a big way with market leader Bharti Airtel now set to launch its App Stores on February 10, reports the Economic Times. Recently Aircel had tied up with Infosys to launch its App Stores. Idea too is reportedly working towards launching App Stores. Research firm Gartner estimates the global application store market to be worth $ 6.2 billion in 2010 with total downloads exceeding 4.5 billion. In 2009 revenues from app stores were at $ 4.2 billion and by 2013 the figure is expected to rise to $ 29.5 billion. The concept of App Stores is mainly to gain an increased pie of the VAS market. Globally handset manufacturers have used this concept to gain additional revenues from VAS. Apart from Apple, Nokia, BlackBerry, Samsung and Sony Ericsson too have presence in the App Store space.
