  2. No applicants for 3G spectrum on first day NEW DELHI: Not a single company — Indian or foreign — knocked on DoT's door on Monday, the first day that the department opened applications for 3G & BWA auctions. DoT officials confirmed that no applications were received but remain hopeful that companies will play their hand over the next few days. "Since the applications will reveal whether a company is bidding for pan India or select circles, prospective applicants are expected to hold their cards close to their chest till the last moment," a senior DoT official told ToI. The last date for submission is March 19, with DoT expecting to receive between 8 and 12 applications by then. The 3G auctions are scheduled to begin on April 9. On February 25, the government had released the Notice Inviting Applications (NIA) after multiple postponements. It is clear from the NIA conditions that almost all applicants will be existing operators, who currently hold UAS licences and 2G spectrum either in GSM bands, CDMA bands or both. Bharti, Vodafone, Tatas, RCOM, Idea, Aircel, Etisalat, Uninor, and perhaps Loop, Datacom and Sistema Shyam are among those that are expected to submit applications. Government is auctioning three 2x5 MHz slots in the 2.1 GHz band in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu (including Chennai) and Kerala (all A Category circles), Haryana, UP East, UP West, Rajasthan, MP (all B Category circles), Orissa, Assam and North East (all C Category circles). Four slots are on offer in Punjab (Category A), West Bengal (Category , Himachal and Bihar (Category C). No new entrant is likely to participate in auctions. The NIA requires Indian firms to have 3G experience and global companies to acquire a UAS licence at a cost of Rs 1,651 crore which promises to keep all new entrants out of the bid. While companies like Bharti, Vodafone, Tatas, RCOM and Idea might opt for pan-India bids, late entrants like Uninor, Etisalat, and Sistema Shyam might just bid for select circles.
  3. What's Wrong With This World!

If you are disgusted with all the crime and misery, and want it to stop, guess where you need to start? Right, with you! How does one tolerate all the crime that is going on in this world? I am asked this question a lot. But it’s not a question of toleration. If you tolerate, you will go crazy. You need not have to tolerate; you can only do what you can do about it. You cannot reverse what has happened. The culprit is also a victim Now one thing is, [when you look at crime] you are looking only at that person who is abused as a victim, but the person who is abusing is also a victim in so many ways, because in many ways he is degrading himself. The worst thing that any human being can do to himself is to degrade himself like an animal, which for some reason he is doing. Though it may give him some pleasure or joy or power or something at that moment, still, in many ways, it is a tragedy for him as well. So it is not that one is a victim and the other an assailant. Both are victims. Many things like this are happening in the society; it is not just an individual act; it is a complex process of many things that are happening. So should you allow it to happen? No, you do whatever you can do to see that those things don’t happen. What you can control But those things do happen. So what you can do, you do, but you cannot change all of it. It doesn’t matter what kind of a person you become; even if you become a super-human being, you will never have absolute control over the external world. Whether it is your institution or your family or the world, you will never have total control over the external situation. But you can have total control over the internal situation. This is always possible. Now, the external has gone out of control, for some reason, people are killing, people are raping, people are doing all kinds of ugly things in the world. So, because the external has gone out of control, does it mean you should allow the internal to also go out of control? If your external situations are going out of control, is it not important to at least you keep your interiority in control? Now that man has gone insane; he is into that kind of act. If you are also going insane with anger and hatred for that man, what is the difference? He raped, so you want to kill. What is the difference? That does not mean you should not do something about the situation. What you have to do, you do. But when you do it with anger and hatred, it is of no value—whatever you do. Anger is like rape Unfortunately, for most people, fear, anger, hatred, are the most intense situations in their lives. Their love is never so intense, their peace is never so intense, their joy is never so intense, but their negativities are intense. So they experience power in negative situations. As you experience power in anger, the rapist experiences his lust as power. It is the most powerful situation that he experiences in his life, where he physically imposes himself on somebody else. He feels powerful. That is why he is going for it. And that is exactly the justification you are giving to be angry. It’s not different. Just the acts are different. One is socially approved and another is not. That’s all. Otherwise both these actions are coming from the same basis. Acting from intelligence Now you think that you can change the world, or you have the capacity to move yourself only with anger. Why? Why can’t you move with love? Why can’t you move with compassion? Why can’t you move out of your intelligence as to what is needed around you? Okay, not even out of love; at least out of your intelligence you do what is needed for the society around you. The most beautiful things will happen when your actions spring from your intelligence and not from your anger. How you respond depends on what kind of situation you are in, who you are, what your capabilities are, what means you have to do that sort of a thing. You cannot respond in the same way in every situation. If you have the power and the means to do something effectively, you can respond in one way. If you do not have the power and the means to respond at that moment, maybe your response is to keep quiet at that moment and see what can be done later. But this is not done in vengeance or revenge. Functioning from love You don’t want this to happen, either to the victim or to the assailant. Both are in some way being degraded in their life. One is doing it to himself, another is being subjected to that by somebody. You don’t want this to happen to either of them, not just one. Only then you can say that you are functioning from your love. Otherwise, you are functioning only from your identity as a woman or man, which will not create a healthy world. Since people always act from their identity of belonging to a certain group, or religion, or race, or country, or sex, all this misery has happened. If you act without identity, you just function out of your intelligence and see whether you want this or not. Finding a solution How you respond depends on what means you have. All of us cannot respond in the same way to a given situation. It depends on what means we have in our hands at that moment. If you get into wild reactions out of your emotions, you will not bring any justice. You will not bring any well-being to the world. You will just counter one evil with another. That is definitely not a solution. Only when you act without identifications, and function out of your intelligence, can there be a solution to this.
  4. Source Airtel has announced that it is offering higher speeds for its broadband customers so they can enjoy live streaming of IPL matches on the video sharing website Youtube. com. Airtel will offer speeds of 2MBPS for youtube. com/ipl from 12th March till 25th April. Youtube. com has won the official rights to stream all live matches in the tournament lasting 45 days. All users of the broadband service will be able to watch the content on internet just like on live TV. The speed will be upgraded and will only be for youtube. com/ipl while for other sites and even other pages on youtube, the speed will remain the same. The company will consider the streaming as part of data transfer limits of customer's tariff plans. It does not guarantee the speed for 2MBPS all the time as it will depend on the traffic. Airtel is the official broadband sponsor of Indian Premiere League season 3.
  5. Aircel "Peek", A Qwerty Email Handset For Rs 2,999 Aircel India has taken a huge gamble by introducing a new device called "Peek" which is a Qwerty device similar to those provided by RIM’s Blackberry. The device which is targeted at email users, has a Qwerty keyboard and is specifically for emails. Aircel boasts that Peek is the thinnest email device ever created. Peek in itself is not a pricey device, and at Rs. 2,999 it is almost a steal, but would Indian consumers really buy a device just for emails? Consider this, most of the smartphones available today have email capability along with video, camera, voice and more, so would users buy a device just for the sake of email? The marketing strategy of Aircel may not be wrong, but they are basically targeting a small niche of users who want dedicated devices to check their email and not the entire package which a smartphone offers. Whether a device with only email capabilities succeeds or not is a feat we will be watching. Specifications: Aircel Peek is available in the two colors, black and red and comes with a Qwerty keyboard. Users can currently configure only 3 email accounts, which makes no sense to me and will have PUSH email capability. Battery life is supposedly 2-3 days, but expect it to be much lower if you are a heavy email user. To top it you can only store up-to 5000 email message right now and about 1000 contacts. Charges: Users will have to pay an initial amount of Rs. 897 for email access for 90 days and then have to shell out a monthly charge of Rs. 299 every month to download their emails. Verdict: This device will definitely not take off as much as Aircel expects, considering that it restricts users to only 3 email accounts and also has a charge of Rs. 299 per month which is almost equivalent to a GPRS connection price one pays on mobile smartphones. In addition to that, this device is practically useless without a Internet connection and does not even allow you to make phone calls. All in all, my prediction is that, this device will be a big failure. If you are interested in the Aircel Peek, you can find more information and purchasing details at the Official Aircel site.

Fake currency notes of Rs.2.48 crore recovered Fake currency notes of Rs.2.48 crore were recovered from a train in Uttar Pradesh's Chanduali district, a railway official said on Saturday. The fake notes and maps of Thailand were recovered from two bags Friday night from an AC coach of the Delhi-bound Purushottam Express at the Mugalsarai railway station in Chanduali, about 300 km from here, during a routine check. "All the currency notes are of Rs.500 denomination and have dummy written on them. Actually, the notes are incompletely printed and carry watermark and symbol of the Reserve Bank of India," Government Railway Police (GRP) inspector Tripurari Pandey told reporters. "We have sought help from the Anti-Terrorist Squad, Reserve Bank of India and other agencies to probe into the case. All of us would be carrying out a joint enquiry along with the district police," he said.
  9. Save Paper Save Tree

CAT saved 1,000 trees by going online The online admission process of the Indian Institutes of Managements may have brought along its share of glitches but has scored in terms of going green. Taking the admission process online in has saved 50 tonnes of paper, to produce which about 1,000 trees would have to be felled. “This is the first time a test of this magnitude has been paperless. The online CAT is eco-friendly,” said Satish Deodhar, convener, CAT 2009, and economics professor at IIM, Ahmedabad. Printing prospectus, application forms and other bulletins requires 25 tonnes of paper, admit cards, examination booklets and score cards account for a similar amount. But with online forms, question papers and score cards, the process did not require paper except for vouchers that the applicants bought from banks. “It is a welcome step that should be replicated elsewhere,” said Kartikeya Sarabhai, director, Centre for Environment Education, an autonomous body working with the support of the Union ministry of environment and forests. “We suffered setbacks. But they are common when a test of this size is taking place in this format for the first time,” Deodhar said.

  11. Source MUMBAI: 'Going green' is no more an option for telecom operators. It has become a necessity in a market where margins are nosediving due to tariff wars, denting the profitability of the mightiest. With energy expenses constituting nearly 25% of the total network operating costs, efficient power management holds the key to improving financials, as operators have already shaved other costs to the bone by outsourcing non-core functions. Equipment vendors like Ericsson, tower companies including Bharti Infratel and network services provider GTL are investing big bucks in bringing out green products and solutions to cut operators’ opex. While a pan-India deployment looks some time away, up to 20% reduction in energy requirements is achieveable in the near future, said industry officials. India currently has around 3 lakh towers, and the number is expected to increase to 450,000 towers with 900,000 tenants in the next three years. Given the frequent power cuts, each tenant consumes almost 3,000 litres of diesel every year on a shared tower, which increases operations costs. “Apart from reduction in levies and duties, efficient-energy management has the potential to bring down costs for operators,” said Idea Cellular chief corporate affairs officer Rajat Mukarji. Idea is using bio-diesel on some of its base stations on a pilot basis. “The savings are nominal, as of now, but if it can be replicated on 3-lakh towers across the country, the amount of money that can be saved will be huge,” he said. GTL president & COO (strategy & new technologies) Sharat Chandra said the company is pumping in Rs 1,400 crore in the first phase for engineering and deploying solutions that reduce energy expenses. “These solutions are targeted to cut energy requirements by up to 20%,” he said. Aircel Cellular is already using these solutions, which include solar systems, micro-wind turbines, adoption of free cooling methods, energy audit, besides others. GTL has deployed these solutions at more than 5,000 sites, reducing energy consumption and carbon emission. ‘We are planning to turn the entire portfolio of towers into green towers in the next three years,” added Mr Chandra. While Bharti Airtel’s EBITDA margin declined 1.53% year-on-year to 39.3% in the December quarter, the figure for Idea eroded from 25.3% to 23.5% due to a fierce tariff war. Airtel’s infrastructure arm Bharti Infratel is aiming to cut energy costs by 15% annually with plans to invest Rs 300 crore in seven pilot projects (P7) for reducing energy consumption. “We have undertaken trials for solar power, bio diesel and free cooling, among others. We are rolling out pilots in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where grid availability is poor and diesel costs are high,” said a Bharti Infratel official. Ericsson V-P (marketing & strategy) P Balaji said: “We are helping operators improve the efficiency of their networks through delivering energy-efficient products, providing optimal network design and introducing the innovative use of alternative energy sources to run these networks, lowering the cost of operations.” Ericsson has launched its wind-powered radio base station (RBS) site solution in India, offering low-cost of construction and maintenance. The towers do not require feeders and cooling systems, resulting in up to 40% lower consumption of power. It has also undertaken pilots using bio-diesel to cut costs and reduce carbon emissions. According to Macquarie Equities Research analyst Shubham Majumder, Indian operators run fairly efficient operations with limited scope for improving margins by cutting costs. “Network opex is the only cost lever that would cushion the fall in profitability. Although these green initiatives to cut down the network opex costs are underway, it will be quite some time before they can help telcos attain significant cost savings,” he said.
  12. Source Travelling by the Delhi Metro? With Google’s new service you can now get on-the-go information about schedules, routes, prices and commute times New Delhi: Anyone who’s commuted in Delhi knows it’s nothing to blink at. Hour long traffic jams, choking fumes and an endless sea of cyclists, pedestrians, motorbikes, panhandlers, buses, cows, cars and carts make getting around India’s sprawling capital a challenge for even the best equipped. So when the first section of the Delhi metro opened in December 2002, it was hailed by residents as a welcome step towards a pleasant commute. That being said, even with the construction of the metro, a city as big and ever changing as Delhi makes figuring out how to get from point A to B without asking several passersby (most of whom are likely to be as confused as you are) a challenge – particularly for tourists or those new to the city. That’s why Google Transit, a partnership between Google and Delhi Metro comes as a welcome announcement. Google Maps will now provide not just driving directions, but also metro schedules and routes, offering detailed information on which metro lines to take, what time trains leave, where to switch, what the cost of the commute is, how long it the trip will take, and what services – whether these be ATMs, coffee shops or bars – are near a designated metro station. Google Transit will be available for free on data enabled mobile phones. The service will continue to be updated as the Delhi Metro updates its information. The Google/DMRC partnership comes at a good time, given that Delhi expects a surge of tourism surrounding the Commonwealth Games in October. Google has also launched the service in an experimental manner in Kolkata, as well as parts of Chennai and Hyderabad and has expressed an interest in partnering with multiple agencies in various regions. “If there are agencies out there who feel this service is useful, all they need to do is contact us and give us their data about routes and schedules,” says to Manik Gupta, product manager for Google Maps in India. To get a sense of how commuters can use Google Transit, Mint asked Gupta to walk us through the service. Watch the above video.

PETA urges people to avoid fish-eating in Tamil Nadu Chennai, March 10 (ANI): Activists of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have appealed people in Tamil Nadu to desist from the habit of eating fish, as it is a risk to human health for the chemical toxins, besides suffering of the animal. Talking to media here on Wednesday, PETA activists said eating fish also poses danger to human beings’ lives. PETA activists said that by this protest they wanted to urge the people to adopt an animal friendly policy. ‘There are many reasons why PETA is running this campaign asking people not to eat fish. The major reason why we are running this is the cruelty aspect how fish are being killed. As we have shown in this video how the sharks and dolphins are killed and their meat is sold openly in the market for 22 US Dollars to 44 US Dollars,’ said Nikunj Sharma, an activist. India is the world’s third largest producer of fish. Founded in 2000, PETA India is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of animals. The forum operates under the simple principle that animals are not for eating, wearing, experimenting on, or using for entertainment. PETA India educates policy-makers and the public about animal abuse and promotes an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect. (ANI)
  16. Speed Surfing:

Source How are browser speeds increased and how preciptible is this speed difference to the end users? Earlier this week, Opera Software launched what it claimed was the fastest browser in the world, the 10.50 version of its eponymous browser. But at least two other browsers – Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome – claim that title, and there are still two more major browsers out there in the market, Mozilla’s Firefox and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. On Just to Clarify this week, we examine exactly how browser speeds are improved incrementally. What did Opera 10.50 do differently, for instance, as compared to its previous versions? And really, how perceptible is this speed difference to us, the end users? Our guest on the show today is Charles McCathieNevile, the chief standards officer at Opera Software. Download Show
  17. Vodafone's First Android Handset Seen

Source Vodafone is all set to announce what is arguably its first Android based phone. The phone, which just goes by the name 845, will be a cheap Android based smartphone with just the basic features you'd expect on an entry level Android device. The only image of it as of now is a very poor one as seen below. As for the features, the phone has a large 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen display, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3.2MP camera, 512MB of internal memory. The memory can be expanded using microSD cards. The phone comes with a 1200Mah battery and will run Android 2.1. The phone is expected to be launched in May in Europe. Also, it is likely that Vodafone might change the name of the phone to something else when the launch eventually happens. Let's see if this handset makes its way to India in the near future. Vodafone had earlier this year launched two low-end phones - the 150 and the 250, both of which cost less than Rs. 1,000.
  18. DoT wins battle of upmanship, S Tel says may not pursue more licences New entrant, S Tel said on Tuesday that it may not pursue more licences in the remaining 16 circles of India. The move coincides with the DoT asking the company to stop offering mobile services last week. In a letter to DoT, S Tel says that it is reviewing its strategy for licences in the remaining 16 circles due to a combination of factors such as the emergence of several new players, hyper competition, the fact that several existing players have not been allotted airwaves and evolution of new technologies such as 3G and 4G. S Tel executives had met Communications Minister A Raja on Monday to resolve the stand-off. S Tel has licences to offer mobile services in 6 circles. It had applied for these 6 circles before September 25, 2007. The DoT had issued a press release notifying that September 25, 2007 will be considered as last day for applying for new 2G licence instead of earlier announced date of October 01, 2007. This decision was challenged by S Tel in Delhi HC. The Delhi HC too had ruled in favour of S Tel. The case was then taken up to the Supreme Court by DoT and is scheduled for hearing this month. The Delhi HC’s order had already caused a huge embarrassment to DoT as it actually questioned the Ministry’s decision to act arbitrarily. The issue is again related to DoT’s controversial decision of granting new 2G licences by resorting to favouritism.
  19. Global Warming....

MCD's bright idea In a bid to conserve energy, the civic agency launches the country's first remote-controlled streetlights It's quite a turn-on. The MCD has decided to do its bit for the environment by adopting a remote-controlled street lighting system. Which means the streets of Delhi would light up automatically at dusk and it would be lights-out after sunrise. And, the system is sub-geography specific, so south Delhi wouldn't waste unnecessary power when it's dusk only in Noida. All the lights are individually monitored and controlled from a central server. In the event of a fault, an SMS is directly sent to the maintenance staff for speedy and timely action. The system provides the report of operative and non-operative lamps on the roads. That's not all; this intelligent system can also detect any theft of power from the feeders. "The system is based on GSM and GPRS on which the mobiles work. While the system eliminates manual or timer-based operation of street lights, the lights are automatically turned on and off according to the sunrise and sunset time of the geographic locations, which in turn is doing energy conservation and reduces CO2 emissions. The operation of streetlights is managed from a central station," said municipal commissioner KS Mehra. MCD is upgrading the streetlights in two phases. The first phase covering 101 km has been successfully completed. In the ongoing second phase, 157 km are to be covered. The entire cost incurred in the project is Rs 32 lakh. "Each feeder pillar powering approximately 70-80 lights is controlled by a device that has a SIM with GPRS connectivity installed. The system also facilities auto-remote metering of the energy consumption, thus eliminating manual meter reading," informed Mehra. The system also monitors the power quality, power factor, frequency and energy expenditure. Also the device can trip the lights during ultra high or low voltages thus saving the lamps from failures. The lights can be simultaneously turned on or off during bad weather or poor traffic conditions. Phase-II is scheduled to be complete by the end of May, 2010. Highlights 101 km In Phase-I, which consists of 52 roads with width of 80 feet or more 157 km To be covered in Phase-II, which consists of 107 roads with width of 80 feet or more; about 45 km completed and about 23 km will be completed by the year end.
