  4. Source If you were asked the question, "Which is the world's most widely used mobile OS platform?" Your answer might probably be Series 60. But, did you know that it is actually Series 40, Nokia's own proprietary OS, that actually has the largest number of users? S40 was always "sidelined" and found being used mostly on the lower-end handsets from Nokia. The OS, which is quite capable in itself was given an update just over an year ago - giving it better multitasking and multimedia abilities. This made the OS quite contemporary - but still had a shortcoming of sorts. Samsung and LG, over the course of the last year, showed how to make a non-smartphone with a capable OS a runaway success. The likes of the Corby and the LG Cookie have users a near smartphone experience, touchscreen at a price that was affordable. Nokia had nothing on offer in this segment. S40 was not touchscreen optimized and probably had one S40 device that was touchscreen, the 6208c. This is probably why Nokia has decided to bring in touch and QWERTY optimized S40 version in the near future. Nothing is official yet! The news about this new S40 version was as per a leaked document sourced by folks over at Cellularmania. The document also mentions Nokia's forthcoming dual-SIM phones and an enhanced browsing experience on S40 devices. Nokia also promises to improve S40's Internet capabilities although details as to how exactly this will happen are sketchy. Looks like S40 will continue to live on and silently dominate the cellular OS market for the years to come.

Tata Motors to launch Nano electric in 30 months in Europe GENEVA: Tata Motors on Tuesday said it will launch the electric version of the world's cheapest car Nano in Europe within the next two-and-a-half years, although no timeline has been fixed for its rollout at home. "The electric Nano will be launched in Europe in two-and- a-half years and it will be launched in select markets like Britain and the Scandinavian countries first, and gradually in other nations," Tata Motors vice-chairman Ravi Kant told reporters at the Geneva Motor Show here today. The company, which unveiled the electric version of the small car – Tata Nano EV – would also launch the version in the domestic market. However, no possible timeframe has been fixed for its launch in the home market. "We have not decided the time line for launch of the electric Nano in India, but we are looking at it," Kant said. Asked about the pricing of the Nano EV, he said it would be decided at the time of launch. The Nano EV would be four-seater, instead of the five-seater existing Nano. The electric car, using super polymer lithium battery, would have 160km battery range and would touch a speed of 60km in 10 seconds. The European version of the small car – Nano Europa – would be exported from India in the next two years, Tata Motors managing director for India operations PM Telang said. On an electric Indica Vista, Tata Motors' Kant said the company would start selling the car in Europe from this year. "The Indica Vista EV will be introduced in select European countries, beginning this year. We will progressively introduce electric vehicles in all relevant markets," he said. Earlier, the company said it could launch an electric version of its flagship passenger car Indica in domestic market simultaneously with its European launch. Tata Motors has been developing the electric Indica with a Norwegian firm for launching in the British, Norwegian and Danish markets by 2011, which will mark the global launch of the car. At the Geneva Motor Show, the company also showcased its multi-purpose vehicle Aria, the sedan Indigo Manza, besides some other vehicles.

Diet influences survival rates among ovarian cancer patients - The Hindu Researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago determined that there is a strong relationship between healthy eating and prolonged survival among ovarian cancer patients. The boffins reported the finding in the March 2010 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. The subjects included 351 women diagnosed with incident epithelial ovarian cancer who participated in a previous case-control study. The original study collected demographic, clinico-pathologic, and lifestyle-related variables including diet. Each subject completed a food frequency questionnaire where they were asked to report their usual dietary intake over the three to five years prior to their diagnosis. To translate the diet estimates into a meaningful way, the FFQ items were assigned to the major food groups reflected in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 (DGA) including fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, dairy, fats and oils, sweets, and alcohol. Grains, meats, and dairy were further subdivided to “suggested” and “other” groups. The “suggested” subdivisions included healthier food choices, whereas the “other” subdivisions contained less desirable selections. The authors found that higher total fruit and vegetable consumption, and higher vegetable consumption alone led to a survival advantage. Likewise, a statistically significant improvement in survival was observed for the healthier grains. Higher intakes of less-healthy meats were associated with a survival time disadvantage. Writing in the article, Therese A. Dolecek, PhD, MS, RD, Research Associate Professor of Epidemiology, Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Institute for Health Research and Policy, School of Public Health and Member, Cancer Control and Population Science Research Program, UIC Cancer Center, University of Illinois at Chicago, and colleagues state, “The study findings suggest that food patterns three to five years prior to a diagnosis of epithelial ovarian cancer have the potential to influence survival time. The pre-diagnosis food patterns observed to afford a survival advantage after an epithelial ovarian cancer diagnosis reflect characteristics commonly found in plant-based or low fat diets. These diets generally contain high levels of constituents that would be expected to protect against cancer and minimize ingestion of known carcinogens found in foods.”

At 65, this woman is leading quiet revolution to promote cloth bags VADODARA: At a time when environmentalists are deliberating about issues related to global warming, a 65-year-old woman from the city decided to act rather than debate. Kalpana Bhatt, a resident of Vasna Road, began a quiet revolution about three months ago to discourage usage of plastic bags. Bhatt started promoting usage of cloth bags among citizens who frequent shops to buy groceries and other items. She first zeroed in on a shop near her home and approached the owner for buying cloth bags made by her. Bhatt sold the cloth bags to the Farm Fresh shop located on Vasna Road at the cost of plastic bags. And, her efforts have started producing results as more than 100 persons have started using the cloth bags regularly in her area. "It was in November last year that I struck upon this idea of spreading awareness about usage of cloth bags. I used to see people carry monthly provisions in plastic bags from a shop near my home. I thought that I should start promoting usage of cloth bags among these people," Bhatt told TOI. But, it wasn't an easy path for Bhatt and owner of Farm Fresh as they faced resistance from customers. "People initially refused to pay small amount for cloth bags and insisted for plastic ones. But, I started standing at the shop and convinced the customers to use cloth bags that can be reused. After lot of pep talk, people finally started accepting cloth bags," added 65-year-old Bhatt, who is a housewife. Bhatt also provides cloth bags to two other shops in the vicinity. She first collects old clothes and garments from houses in her area and then makes colourful bags out of them. "I have hired a few girls from the slums in our area who stitch the bags for a fee. Every bag costs about Rs 3.50, but I supply it at the cost of plastic bags to owner of Farm Fresh Yogesh Maaru as he was the first one to accept my idea." "People earlier used to make excuses and refused to take the cloth bags. But now the mindset has changed and most of my customers use cloth bags," said Maaru. Bhatt said she wants people to adopt any one shop in their own area and promote usage of cloth bags. "I don't want to lead any revolution. I want that people should do it in their own areas and spread the idea of avoiding usage of plastic bags," Bhatt clarified.

Scientist Develops Low-Cost Soy Chicken COLUMBIA, Mo.—A University of Missouri food scientist has developed a process that makes soy products simulate the fibrous qualities of a chicken breast, providing a low-cost, tasty way to add soy to the diet. “Early tests provided some of the fibrous texture to the final product, but it tasted more like turkey,” said Fu-Hung Hsieh, an MU professor of biological engineering and food science in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources and the College of Engineering. “In order to produce a more realistic product, we had to tweak the process and add extra fiber to give the soy a stringy feeling that tears into irregular, coarse fibers similar to chicken.” To create the soy chicken, Hsieh starts with a soy protein extracted from soy flour. The soy then goes through an extrusion cooking process that uses water, heat and pressure while pushing the mixture through a cylinder with two augers. “This particular soy substitute is different because we are working with a higher moisture content, which is up to 75 percent,” he said. “The high moisture content is what gives the soy a very similar texture to chicken in addition to the appearance.”
  12. Global Warming....

Global warming may become global cooling this century London: A leading analyst has claimed that global warming is set to become global cooling this century, with temperatures falling by about 0.5 degree Celsius by the year 2050. According to a report in Daily Express, the analyst in question is Professor Michael Beenstock from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who said that theories of climate change are wrong. He warned that climatologists have misused statistics, leading them to the mistaken conclusion global warming is evidence of the greenhouse effect. He told London's Cass Business School that the link between rising greenhouse gas emissions and rising temperatures is "spurious", adding, "The greenhouse effect is an illusion." Professor Beenstock said that just because greenhouse gases and temperatures have risen together does not mean they are linked. He claims that the real cause of rising temperatures is the sun, which he says is at its hottest for over 1,000 years, but is "beginning to stabilize". "If the sun's heat continues to remain stable, and if carbon emissions continue to grow with the rate of growth of the world economy, global temperatures will fall by about 0.5C by 2050," Professor Beenstock said. Citing predictions by climatologists in the 1970s of a new Ice Age, Professor Beenstock said, "I predict that climatologists will look equally foolish in the years to come. Indeed, it may be already happening."
  13. Source Mobile handsets could be marginally cheaper with the Finance Minister on Friday announcing tax exemptions for chargers, batteries and accessories. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said full exemption from basic customs duty and CVD available for parts, accessories for manufacturing of mobile handsets is extended to parts for manufacture of battery chargers and hand free headphones also. Full exemption from the four per cent special additional duty (SAD) of customs is presently available up to July 6, 2010. Exemption from basic customs duty, CVD and SAD on parts of battery chargers and hand-free headphones is available until March 2011, he said. Indian Cellular Association (ICA), an industry body, welcomed the development. Its national president Pankaj Mohindroo said, "Cellular handset makers are pleased, especially on account of the exemption of 4 per cent SAD, which was resulting in working capital blockage. Such exemption signals the government’s renewed focus on manufacturing the mobile phone, and now also its parts, components and accessories." Country's number one mobile handset seller Nokia said the Budget has removed the 24 per cent import duty on components, raw material imported for manufacturing batteries, chargers and other part and accessories. The will attract more investment in this area and encourage domestic manufacturing of parts and accessories. Nokia further said the move towards exempting the 4 per cent SAD on import of mobile handsets is also a welcome step. This duty was hitherto refundable on payment of VAT; this step will make the entire process of handset imports much simpler, facilitating better cash flow in the industry. Mahindroo said the dispensation to exempt manufacturers of mobile phone battery packs, chargers and hands-free headphones from custom duty will also encourage the likes of Nokia, LG, Samsung, Sony-Ericsson and Motorola to source such items from India which will create a whole new local manufacturing. Samsung, country's second largest mobile handset seller, however, said there would be no impact on the price for the end customer as the cut is very small. Most of the mobile handset makers usually import the device from China or Korea as it provides them economies of scale. Homegrown handset maker Karbonn and Zen said they would pass on the benefits of the tax exemptions to their customers. "We as a company look forward to pass on the benefits to our customers," Pradeep Jain, Managing Director, Karbonn Mobiles. Deepesh Gupta, MD of Zen Mobiles, said battery chargers and hands-free headphones are the basic accessories of mobile phones and extending exemption from duty presently available for parts, components, accessories for manufacturing of mobile handsets to parts for the manufacture of battery chargers and hands-free headphones, will lower the cost of handsets. COAI, industry body representing the GSM operators, said that the continuation of exemption from basic, CVD and special additional duties (SAD) granted to parts, components and accessories of mobile phones would help towards penetration of mobile service into rural areas.

  16. Bharti teams up with 23 telcos for apps mkt NEW DELHI: India’s largest telco by subscribers and revenues, Bharti Airtel has joined forces with 23 other global communication giants to challenge the dominance of handsetmakers, especially that of Apple, in the mobile applications (apps) space. “The inspiration for this initiative might have come from them (handsetmakers), but our platform is agnostic to devices. We are attempting to build a global ecosystem of developers and together, these 24 operators have access to over 3 billion customers around the world. The global GSM mobile association (called GSMA) had come up with this plan and some of the world’s top device manufacturers such as LG Electronics, Samsung and Sony Ericsson have already extended their support to this initiative by operators build an open platform for mobile applications,” said Bharti Airtel’s CEO Sanjay Kapoor. The Bharti Airtel head, who is also on board of the GSMA, dispelled analysts’ predictions of failure and said that all telcos who are part of this alliance were committed to working together to build this global platform. Mobile apps have been a rave globally ever since Apple launched its App Store in 2008. Last month, Apple said that its apps have seen over 3 billion downloads. Other handsetmakers such as Nokia which have joined the fray over the last 12 months are also seeing big business opportunities in this space. For instance, BlackBerry’s app store that is only a few months old already boasts of over 4,000 apps. Ditto with Google’s Android that as already crossed the 20,000 apps figure. The rationale behind the 24 largest mobile operators joining hands on the apps space is that service providers have lost billions of dollars in revenues to handsetmakers which have allowed independent developers to access their platforms to build tens and thousands of apps that have been monetized. Other members of this alliance include AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, SingTel, NTT DoCoMo, Orange, Telefónica, Telenor Group, Sprint, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone. Research firm Gartner, which tracks IT and telecom across the world, has said that app stores globally had raked in over $4.2 billion in revenues last year while predicting that this would increase to $29.5 billion by 2013. With app stores opening up a bonanza of revenue opportunities for developers and handsetmakers, several mobile firms such as Vodafone Group, NTT DoCoMo, AT&T France Telecom and even Bharti Airtel have joined in to tap into this space. For instance, last month Bharti Airtel had announced that its app store had gone live with over 1,200 applications making it the first Indian telco to attempt replicating the highly successful business model of Apple, the pioneer in this space. Mr Kapoor also pointed out at the Wholesale Applications Community aims to unite a fragmented marketplace and create an open industry platform that benefits everybody—from applications developers and network operators to mobile phone users themselves. “It is possible that the individual mobile app stores of operators may the backend and can be linked together by this global platform,” he added.

Turn veggie, prevent chronic diseases - Zee News Well planned vegetarian diets are healthy and nutritious for all age groups and help prevent heart diseases, cancer, obesity and diabetes. Winston Craig, professor of nutrition and wellness at Andrews University, and Reed Mangels, nutrition advisor at the Vegetarian Resource Group, Baltimore, conducted the study on behalf of the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Vegetarian diets are often associated with health advantages, including lower blood cholesterol levels, lower risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure levels and lower risk of hypertension and type 2 diabetes. "Vegetarian diets tend to be lower in saturated fat and cholesterol and have higher levels of dietary fibre, magnesium and potassium, vitamins C and E, folate, carotenoids, flavonoids," the study said. These nutritional differences may explain some of the health advantages of those following a varied, balanced vegetarian diet, said an ADA release. The study draws on results from ADA's evidence analysis process to show vegetarian diets can be nutritionally adequate in pregnancy and result in positive maternal and infant health outcomes. Besides, an evidence-based review showed a vegetarian diet is associated with a lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease. A section in ADA's paper on vegetarian diets and cancer has been significantly expanded to provide details on cancer-protective factors in vegetarian diets. An expanded section on osteoporosis includes roles of fruits, vegetables, soy products, protein, calcium, vitamins D and K and potassium in bone health.

  23. Source NEW DELHI: MTS, Russia’s largest mobile phone operator, which launched CDMA mobile services in India a little over a year ago, is daring to be different by focusing on the data segment rather than voice for increased market penetration. When asked why MTS was betting on CDMA while most companies were either in the GSM business or moving to dual offerings of GSM and CDMA, Vsevolod Rozanov, President and CEO of Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd said, “CDMA is the technology of choice for data. Smart phones on CDMA technology will be a game-changer for people on the go. Prices will also drop as the universe of users grows and this will be an important development to witness over the next four quarters”. MTS received licences to operate 22 telecom circles in 2007. It has launched services in 11 circles with over three million subscribers so far and targets pan-India coverage within 2010. The company has over 3,000 employees. MTS believes India is ripe for a shift from mobile voice to mobile data services. Given India’s hunger for real time information and infotainment, MTS expects markets expanding beyond just corporate users for data to include SME’s, students and eventually small households. India’s highest data users are existing postpaid customers of MTS’s competitors like Reliance, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Tata Docomo. “We will fight a battle for new customers. It is very hard to wean existing customers of other operators”, admitted Rozanov. MTS plans to be EBITDA positive in three years and cash positive one to two years after that with data revenues contributing a third of total revenues. The company has launched high speed data services branded MBlaze. This allows subscribers to browse the Internet for news, sports, fashion, lifestyle, and to shop using websites like Yahoo and Wikipedia. The emphasis for 2010 will be two-fold: Taking the MTS footprint national and launching more data services. MTS’s marketing campaign is also carefully crafted for young professionals and urban youth for increasing usage of data services. Apart from data, MTS believes that the increase of PC sales will drive the data services market way above the current forecasts. According to Rozanov, this, along with the popularity of video streaming and social networking, will unlock the Indian data market.
  24. Source Bangalore: Trouble over the affairs at Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) could cost telecom minister A Raja his job, according to sources in the know. One of them said a report compiled by Department of Telecommunications (DoT) bureaucrats on what ails the state-owned telecom major has been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office. The report puts the blame of irregularities and dismal performance of BSNL squarely on the the Union telecom minister and the company. “The central leadership in the government is seriously considering stripping the telecommunication portfolio from Raja after the Budget,” said the source, who did not want to be named. Those in the know said the report blames the lack of accountability and ownership by the management for its undertaking’s dismal performance. The report states that the Comptroller and Auditor General’s observation on the telecom major’s systemic deficiencies in planning, procurement of equipment and stores points to the management’s failure to steer the organisation out of the current crisis to grow in the competitive environment. “It (the report) blamed BSNL’s flawed tendering process, which is mired in legal issues, for the delay in its expansion plans,” said the source. He said the report has criticised the government-owned phone company for not issuing any new major contracts for mobile networks and equipments even when its existing network has reached full capacity. Sources said the report highlights the fact that the public sector telecom firm had not captured the first mover advantage in 3G (third generation) and Wimax given to it. BSNL has been allotted 3G and Wimax spectrum ahead of the private sector players. The report said if the company was allowed to operate in the current manner then government’s initiatives on e-governance, healthcare, primary education and public welfare in rural India, where BSNL is the only service provider, would suffer a setback. Sources revealed the report lambasts BSNL management for focusing attention on doctoring tender processes to favour select vendors instead of improving the performance of the company. BSNL’s position in the market, in term of number of subscribers, has lately slipped as it has added fewer new users than its rivals. The report has also accused the state-owned telecom firm’s management of compromising the national security by favouring Chinese vendors like Huawei over telecom giants like Nokia, revealed a DoT source. The report says the company has ignored warnings and signals from government agencies and is still favoring Huawei for Wimax equipment in border states like Rajasthan and Punjab.
