  2. Source Micromax, the Gurgaon-based mobile handset manufacturer, says that it is targeting revenues of about Rs 3,000 crore in 2010-11. In conversation with Telecom Yatra, Vikas Jain, business director, Micromax, said, "On the revenue side, we were at Rs 260 crore last year (2008-09) and this year (2009-10), we intend to close at about Rs 1,500 crore. Next year, we are looking at revenue of about Rs 3,000 crore, which is about 100 per cent growth (over the previous year)." Micromax has also started rolling out its international operations. Jain said, "We are looking at three areas – SAARC, Middle East, Africa and Latin America. We are already operational in Nepal and we should be operational in Bangladesh by March. We will be going to UAE through Dubai; Africa through Western part of Africa and Latin America through Brazil." The company is planning to roll out a pilot application store within the next two months. Jain said, "We will be using our in-house platform and applications for the store. We are incubating a complete app store, which will be supported on all Micromax phones." Micromax has earmarked a budget of Rs 100 crore for branding and marketing its products. According to Jain, Micromax is planning to spend 70 per cent of the budget on above the line (ATL), and the remainder on below the line (BTL) marketing. He said, "We have moved from rural to urban areas and understand that we have to showcase our handsets a little bit more now, than what we were doing in rural areas, as most customers in urban areas are brand conscious. We will be focusing a lot on in-store demonstrations; sports, especially cricket and music as we are launching a separate series of music phones." Micromax currently has tie-ups with Tata Docomo, Airtel, BSNL, Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices and MTS, and is in talks with Aircel and Idea Cellular. The company sells handsets in the range of Rs 1,600 to Rs 16,000. The company's current product portfolio consists of both GSM and CDMA handsets. Jain said that the focus is mostly on GSM as it will keep growing, as well as on CDMA. Micromax will be bringing a lot of 3G handsets shortly. It will also launch smartphones, both in GSM and CDMA space. He added, "We have just introduced one Windows-based smartphone in the GSM space, and will now be using our R&D to launch Android because of its obvious advantage of being a freeware."
  3. Would look exactly like the PSP but with two extra buttons - call receive and end key Source If you happen to be a PSP fanatic who badly wanted a phone feature in the gadget, here's some sort of nirvana for you. While Sony Ericsson has hinted that it is thinking of a PSP phone, it might never turn out to be real. It is in these moments of despair that you look towards China. And this time, they have delivered. Well. Almost! Say hello to the "Shanzai" PSP Phone. It looks exactly like the PSP but with two extra buttons, a call receive and end key. The rear has a camera that might be able to take decent pictures. There is no word on the specs of this er beauty -- except that it could feature Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Dual SIM capabilities. One thing we can be sure about is that it will never be able to match the PSP in gaming. There is no word regarding the pricing or availability of this one as of now. Here are a few images of the phone:

  8. Source Samsung has grabbed another industry’s first title by developing a low-power 4Gb (gigabit) DDR3 RAM using 40nm class process technology. This memory promises to bring significant power savings and double the density as compared to 40nm-based 2Gb DDR3 developed last year. For instance, a 16GB module based on 4Gb saves up to 35 percent power opposed to a 16GB module based on 2Gb DDR3. The RAM is apt for high end notebooks but it’s the server systems and data centers that can take great advantage of its power saving ability. In a server environment, a 60nm 1Gb DDR2 consumes 210W whereas the new 4Gb DDR3 consumes only 36W, power savings of about 83 percent. Samsung is currently mass producing 16GB, 32GB RDIMMs and 8GB SoDIMMs modules based on 4Gb DDR3.

  13. Source K. Balaraju was thinking about an innovative way of teaching dance at Saarang using coloured squares on a transparent stage when he says he came up with the idea of secure online transactions that helped him finish his masters’ thesis and file four patents. On Monday, M.S.Ananth, director, Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M), launched IndusInd Bank launched Polaris Software’s Intellect Privacy Card anti-phishing suite at IIT-M, Mr. Balaraju’s alma mater. Explaining the features of the card based on Mr. Balaraju’s idea, Polaris executives said internet banking customers would use multi-factor authentication to secure each transaction. The first level of security would be provided by the typical password-based login into the bank’s portal. The customer would be provided with a booklet of security cards – transparent sheets with grids of 10x6 squares with each square empty or shaded black or marked with a number. For each transaction, the customer would be prompted to use a particular card from the booklet and superimpose it on a grid generated by the portal on the computer monitor for that transaction. The numbers visible after such superimposition should be used as the password for that transaction. Each card may be used for a certain number of transactions and each booklet would contain five to ten cards. Customers may submit requests for fresh booklets similar to requests for cheque books. Since each transaction generated a unique password and a physical superimposition was required to generate it, typical phishing attacks including keylogging, screenlogging or using dictionary methods to decipher passwords would not work in this case, executives said. L.S.Ganesh, co-ordinator of the M.S.(Entrepreneurship) programme at IIT-M, said the Department of Management Studies had worked with the Department of Computer Science to come up with a user-ready product. Ramesh Ganesan, head of transaction banking, IndusInd Bank, said the bank had said the bank was actively looking for innovations to protect internet banking customers’ data.

  15. Save Paper Save Tree

Idea Cellular gives free mobile tickets for travel and films Idea Cellular's latest campaign, urging people to save paper by making using of mobile technology, has been making a lot of news. In order to further promote the idea, the pan-India network provider will give some Mumbaikars and Delhiites a chance to experience using their mobile phones instead of paper tickets to travel and watch movies. The initiative will be executed in two phases in both Mumbai and Delhi. The first 4,000 people in Mumbai, who SMS 'Idea Sealink' to a short code, will receive an SMS which will enable them to travel free of cost and ticket-less on a single journey, either way, on the Bandra-Worli Sea link on Thursday, February 25 between 8 am and 12 noon. Additionally, the first 200 people who SMS 'Idea movie' will win free tickets to the screening of movie 'Karthik calling Karthik' at PVR Cinemas on the same day. Similarly in Delhi, people need to SMS 'Idea Toll' to get a free one-way journey on the DND flyover on March 2, between 8 am and 12 noon and 'Idea Film' to get fee mobile tickets for the screening of 'Karthik calling Karthik' at PVR Cinemas, Saket, on Friday, February 26. Prior to this initiative, Idea also partnered with Barista and Café Coffee Day in Delhi and Mumbai, to introduce mobile menus and bills at their outlets, eliminating the use of paper menus and bills. A similar exercise was undertaken by MTS to promote its promise of unhindered network access. On the day of launch, October 9, 2009, free access was provided to all vehicles on the Delhi-Noida Flyway and Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway between certain time slots. People can be part of this campaign by participating in an SMS-based radio contest. Participation would entitle them to a code (sent to them via SMS), which will be valid as a 'mobile ticket' to travel free of cost on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai, and the Delhi-Noida-Direct (DND) toll bridge, as well as watch a movie at PVR Cinemas in these cities.

  17. DoT sets new deadline for 3G auctions To start on April 9 for three slots instead of the original four. After numerous missed deadlines and controversies for over a year, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) today announced that auctions of licences for third generation (3G) high-speed telecom services would start from April 9. The delays have been on account of differences between DoT and the defence ministry over spectrum availability. The defence services had signed an agreement with DoT to release spectrum before the original January 14 auction deadline but then backed out, saying the alternative network plan was not ready. The new schedule misses the crucial deadline fixed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, to complete the process before March 31 to take advantage of auction revenues for the 2009-10 financial year, which would have helped reduce the government's financial deficit. It is not clear whether Mukherjee can take credit for the revenue from the auctions, which are expected to be completed by the end of April, in 2009-10. A senior officer in the Comptroller and Auditor General of India said: “The transaction has to be completed before March 31 to credit revenues in this fiscal year. The government accounts are open only for a week after the fiscal year ends.” In an official statement today, DoT said it would issue notices inviting applications (NIA) for potential bidders tomorrow for three slots instead of the original four, suggesting that revenues would be far lower than original estimates of Rs 35,000 crore. The fourth slot will be auctioned later since spectrum for it will be available only in 2013. One slot has already been given to state-owned MTNL and BSNL to roll out services in Delhi and Mumbai and the rest of India, respectively. The government had estimated revenues of about Rs 30,000 crore from 3G (Rs 7,500 crore each) and the rest from auction of two slots of broadband wireless access (BWA). The last date for receiving applications is March 19 and the pre-qualification of companies will be announced on March 30. A mock auction for interested players will be conducted on April 5 and 6, and April 9 would mark the start of the actual auction process, expected to take around 10 days. Auction for BWA services —- technology that enables high speed broadband — will take place two days after the close of the 3G auction. There are two BWA slots on the offer. Telecom operators welcomed today’s announcement. Says Anil Sardana, managing director, Tata Teleservices Limited: “We are really glad the government has announced the revised schedule for the 3G auction and we look forward to the entire process being completed within the given time-frame.” The auction is expected to attract most telecom incumbents such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone-Essar, Aircel, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices and Reliance Communications since the licences come bundled with spectrum, the airwaves that enable wireless communications. Newcomers like Uninor are planning to bid only for certain cities. Meanwhile, several telecom companies have been lobbying the government to postpone the auction, citing lack of credit as a result of the stiff rate wars following the entry of new players. However most experts say they do not expect many consumers to shift to 3G initially, primarily because of the high cost of 3G mobile handsets, which start at Rs 7,000. “The 3G market in India will be 5 to 10 per cent of the total mobile users. There are about 120 million GPRS users, out of over 500 million total mobile subscribers,” predicts Kedar Sohoni, president of Informate, a telecom research firm. Others say the spectrum will help incumbents to grow. Says telecom analyst Mahesh Uppal: “The use of broadband wireless services is not likely to go up immediately with the introduction of 3G. Broadband services like video downloads and other bandwidth-hungry services may take time to grow. But, 3G spectrum is critically required by incumbents who have shortage of 2G spectrum in big cities — without it, they would not be able to expand voice services to their customers or sustain their quality.”

Smoking linked to lower IQ Cigarette smokers have lower IQs a study shows according to an Israeli study. The study of 20,000 military recruits found young men who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day had IQ scores that were seven point five points lower than non-smokers.
