  3. Leaked Htc Opal Specs

If the Opal is indeed set to be the successor to the HTC Touch’s throne, we are definitely looking at a Raúl vs. Fidel situation here. Seriously fellas, it looks like you just wrapped a rubber band around a Touch. Ok, lets not get crazy here. Once you get through the thick candy shell there must be a world of difference when it comes to the guts, right? A beefed up processor perhaps? Nope, same old 200 MHz TI OMAP 850 found in the Touch. Hmm, then we must be looking at a sweet new display on this puppy, yes? Nope, same old 2.8-inch QVGA screen. Well the crappy camera must have gotten a huge shot of roids, no? Nope, same old 2 megapixel shooter. Ok, but there will definitely be a huge memory upgrade on this ****er, right? Nope, you’re looking at 128 MB of RAM and 256 MB of ROM. WTF!? As far as we can tell, the only real upgrades from the Touch to the Opal are Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, the new TouchFLO 3D UI and a new d-pad. Considering two of those three “upgrades” could be achieved by simply updating the software on the Touch, we’re going to go ahead and give this one a resounding FAIL. Our only hope is that fact that this leaked spec document is from back in July so maybe they’ve scrapped it since then. If this is indeed going to be HTC’s Touch successor however, then move over Fidel because here comes Raúl. [src: Engadget] opal_fs_v2_4_21.pdf

  17. Finmin sniffs an FDI breach by Shyam Telelink NEW DELHI: The finance ministry has served a show-cause notice on telecom player Shyam Telelink, in which Russian communications major Sistema has a majority stake, for hiking the foreign investment in the company to 73.97% without obtaining government nod. The ministry has pointed out that Shyam could not have hiked its foreign holding without the approval of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB). Shyam had the FIPB approval for only FDI hike of only up to 51%, it said. The company had issued 200 crore equity shares in June 2008 (148. 2 crores to Sistema and 51.8 crore to Indian promoters), which takes the paid-up capital of the company to about Rs 2,500 crore and the foreign holding to 73.966%. The company then approached the FIPB informing the board that its FDI limit had gone up 73.97% and that this should be taken on record. The issue, however, has set off alarm bells in the finance ministry since telecom is a sensitive sector. “In this regard, it is further stated as per extant FDI policy in telecom sector, FDI beyond 49% to 74% is allowed with prior approval of the FIPB. Therefore, you are requested to clarify how the company has increased the foreign equity up to 74%, without approval of FIPB,” the ministry said in a communication to the company. When contacted, sources in Shyam told ET that there was no question of any violation. “We have not got any such communication from the finance ministry. Shyam is not in any violation as the company had already obtained the FIPB nod to have foreign holdings up to 74%,” they said while there was no formal comment from the company. Top executives of the company also alleged that its competitors could be behind this episode. “We have recently got pan-India spectrum and the company is gearing up to roll out mobile services across the country. Our competitors may be behind this in an attempt to delay our rollout plans. Established operators view us a threat,” they added. According to government sources, this may be the first instance in the telecom sector where a company had increased its foreign holding without prior approval. The finance ministry is considering various options, including recommending ‘compounding’ by RBI—imposition of penalty—for FEMA violation. If such a fine were to be imposed, government sources said it would be a steep amount as telecom is a sensitive sector. Clearance from the home and external affairs ministries is required to raise the FDI limit in this sector. Approval from these ministries come only after intelligence agencies clear the proposal. They added that post-facto approval can be rejected by FIPB since a violation had already happened. In case FIPB rejects post-facto approval, return of FDI can be sought. Additionally, the company could also face action from the Department of Telecom for the violation. The level of home ministry scrutiny in teleco FDI cases is best explained by the recent instance involving Russian telco Altimo. Last month, the home ministry informed the FIPB that the Russian company was embroiled in lawsuits and faces allegations of fraud, corruption and bribery. It has also said that its parent company, the Alpha Group, is being probed by European anti-money laundering agencies, in addition to being named in the Volcker Report in connection with the oil-for-food scandal. These observations led the FIPB to reject a foreign investment proposal of a company with which the Alpha Group jointly owns a bank.

  20. Arbitration panel asks Tata to pay $19 million in damages to Reliance Communication NEW DELHI: Tata Communications has been directed by the global arbitration tribunal to pay 19 million dollars plus interest as damages over a cable dispute two years ago. The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the global arbitration tribunal, has directed Tata Communications to pay Reliance Communication subsidiary about 19 million dollars plus interest from May 2006 as damages over a cable dispute. "In the matter of the ICC arbitration proceedings brought by Reliance Globalcom Ltd, formerly known as Flag Telecom, against Tata Communications Ltd, the Tribunal has on August 27, 2008 handed down a final award dealing with the issue of damages," Tata Communications said in a regulatory filing today. "The tribunal has directed Tata Communications to pay Reliance a sum of approximately 19 million dollars plus interest from May 2006 as damages against the 385 million dollars sum claimed by Reliance," the company said in a BSE filing. Tata Communications said this was the tribunal's final award in the ICC arbitration proceedings over a dispute regarding Flag Europe Asia (FEA) cable ongoing since 2004. The dispute between the two companies goes back a few years, when FLAG accused the then state-owned Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) -- now Tata Communications -- of denying it free access to its cable landing station and thereby having a monopolistic hold on bandwidth prices. FLAG wanted access for enhancing the capacity of FEA cable system from 10 Gbps to 80 Gbps. However, VSNL said it was not under obligation to grant access under the construction and maintenance agreement. The dispute culminated in FLAG referring the matter to the ICC. Tata Communications lost its appeal against FLAG (now part of Reliance Globalcom) in April this year and the court held that Tata Com would be ordered to pay the cost of proceedings. The Court in its April 2008 order stated: ''In connection with determining the amount of cost to be awarded in favour of FLAG, the court will consider the underlying substantive interest of the case. Both parties indicated during arguments that the underlying substantive interest amounts to about 400 million dollars. src: ET balle balle anil bhaiya .
  21. CHANDIGARH: Thanks to an expanding affluent middle-class, India is today the world's fastest growing cellular phone market. Having registered success in the lower segment, the transnational mobile phone makers are now targeting the high-end segment. Punjab is a big market, as the craze for expensive mobiles has always been on the rise. The much-awaited iPhone has already entered the Indian market. From its recent launch in the metros, it is expected to capture states like Punjab. It is worth mentioning that Punjab today enjoys a tele-density of nearly 40 per cent, which is double the national average of 20 per cent. The impact of this fact is all major companies like Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson are presently extensively marketing their latest 3G mobiles in Punjab. "In today's time the new phones are very advanced and high-tech, and people are looking for that only. They have been waiting anxiously for i-phones, just because it's having a multi-touch interface. People are more aware of technology and they prefer buying latest gazettes," said a youngster. "All youngsters want to have new technology feature phone. I think that's the main reason. Moreover, they want some stylish phone also. Youngsters are very keen to change the phone quickly. This is the main reason I think. Definitely, the trend will rise in the next 6 to 8 months," said one of the dealers. The latest figures with mobile and other telecom companies show that in Punjab, which has a populace of over 24 million, there are over 11 million telephone subscriptions. Interestingly, over 55 per cent of the handsets sold in Chandigarh and rest of the Punjab are the high-end ones. High-end mobile handset sales in metro cities are just 25-35 per cent among all states. Take a look at the cellular phone's demand in Punjab, one finds that the State's mobile related craze has been unending. And, that could be a major captivation for mobile companies to launch their high-end gazette. "It's a status symbol product and secondly, customer wants such a gazette, which you can use in different ways like mails editing as well as mobile phones. I-phone is basically a touch screen handset and customers are really crazy to buy that with Wi-fi and camera," said one mobile dealer. People of Punjab are known the world over for their dynamism and practical approach, and for their charm to embrace latest technology for a better efficiency and profitability. And, it's the right time for cellular phone companies to invest in the state-of-the-art technologies and make the mobile experience of customers an enjoyable one.
