  3. COLOMBO:Bharti Airtel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, a subsidiary of Indian telecom giant Bharti Airtel, has signed a 100-million dollars investment agreement with the Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka to begin Lankan operation by this year. The agreement, signed yesterday, is the second phase of the company's commitment to invest 200 million dollars in Sri Lanka over the next 5 years, officials of BOI said. With mobile penetration in Sri Lanka estimated at around 30 per cent and growing at a rate of approximately 2 million mobile users per annum, Bharti is looking at cornering a high market share in the next few years. According to the officials, Airtel is expected to begin operations in a big way in Sri Lanka by this year end. It will, however, have to compete with the Telekom Malaysia-owned Dialog Telecom (the largest operator in Sri Lanka), Celltel Lanka (owned by Luxembourg-based service provider Millicom International Cellular), Hutchison (owned by Hong Kong-based Hutchison Telecommunications) and Sri Lankan government-owned Mobitel. Sri Lanka now has 2.7 million fixed access subscribers, 7.9 million mobile and 2,00,000 internet and email subscribers. "The investment will enable Airtel here to roll out all passive infrastructure necessary to gear up the company for launch of its services," a BOI statement said. It said this underlined the company's (Airtel) commitment to deliver quality services to the mobile subscriber market in Sri Lanka.

  5. Reliance Communication at loggerhead on spectrum issue NEW DELHI: GSM operators on Thursday asked the government not to entertain Anil Ambani-led Reliance Commuications' request of alloting GSM spectrum in the 900 MHz band, and claimed that existing players have the first right on this band. Spectrum is the radio frequency used by telecom operators to offer wireless mobile services. "First, crossover allocation of GSM spectrum to CDMA operators is not permissible... it is submitted that the said CDMA operators (Reliance) was alloted spectrum in 1800 MHz band after due consideration and its request within weeks to swap its spectrum band with 900 MHz is completely untenable and cannot be entertained by the DoT," COAI said in a letter to telecom secretary Siddartha Behura. GSM operators' lobby COAI also said the policy of crossover spectrum itself is also challeneged in the telecom tribunal and the legality of this policy is yet to be subjected to a detailed judicial scrutiny. Reliance Communication has been allocated GSM spectrum in 1800 MHz band and has asked the Department of Telecom (DoT) to swap it with 900 MHz, which is much more efficient in terms of servicing the subscribers. Ambani had earlier raised the issue with the DoT that the spectrum in 900 MHz band has been cornered by the existing GSM operators illegaly and needs to refarmed, a demand compaletely opposed by the COAI. If accepted, the existng GSM players may have to surrender part of spectrum in the 900 MHz band and may have to settle with 1800 MHz.
  6. Samsung Max Available With Reliance

hi friends got my samsung max, indeed at a first look a good handset with good sound and an excellent display. the best thing that i loved in this handset is it answering machine feature. guys just set the time after that answer machine handles your calls. and the worst thing that is that one cant play mp4 or 3gp. but samsung Bandas saying that a new software is slated to come which will play 3gp. the browser settings are of tata network thats why it is not working in reliance. mp3 player is good but if there would be equliser it would be better. playlist handles only 17 songs at a go. in all a good handset. FM reception is not as good as nokia. but everything has pros and cons. camera is good but with flash it would have been marvellous. directly saving to memory card is present.

  11. Videocon to invest Rs 6K cr for mobile telecom foray NEW DELHI: The Videocon group, which was recently awarded pan-India telecom licences, will invest Rs 6,000 crore for network roll-outs and to launch operations across the country. Group chairman Venugopal Dhoot told ET. “We have set aside Rs 6,000 crore for our telecom foray. We hope to roll-out services over the next couple of months. We have set a target of 40 million customers within the next five years,” Mr Dhoot said. Videocon has been awarded telecom licences through its subsidiary Datacom. As first reported by ET, Datacom heads the queue for spectrum (radio frequencies) in 19 of the 21 telecom circles. In fact, in the two circles (Delhi and Mumbai), where it does not head the queue, the company is in the second position. “We have appointed Ravi Sharma, who was earlier heading Alcatel-Lucent’s operations in India as the CEO of Datacom. The company is in the process of hiring 200 top executives to run the mobile operations,” Mr Dhoot added. Mr Sharma, who was in charge of Alcatel-Lucent’s south Asia operations and was recently elevated as advisor to Frederic Rose, Alcatel-Lucent’s Europe, Africa and Asia (EAA) business president, had resigned from the company last week. Mr Dhoot dismissed market speculation that Datacom was looking at a merger with telecom service provider HFCL. “This rumour has been around for sometime — I want to clarify that this is utterly baseless,” he said. When asked if Datacom would enter into strategic or financial partnerships with international telecom majors, Mr Dhoot said, “We have got offers from several potential partners. We are evaluating them — there will definitely be one major strategic partner. Over the next three weeks, we shall finalise this strategic player,” he added

  19. Govt seeks details of Tata Tele, Virgin tie up NEW DELHI: The government has sought details from Tata Teleservices on its recent tie up with the UK's Virgin Mobile, a senior telecoms official said on Wednesday, but added the two firms had not been barred from rolling out services. Virgin Mobile, a unit of British communications group Virgin Media, on Sunday announced the launch of a youth-focused service in India through Tata Teleservices. "We have asked them for information ... to see if it is consistent with licencing conditions," Telecoms Secretary Siddhartha Behura told reporters at a business conference. Asked if Tata was barred from rolling out services in partnership with Virgin, he said: "Absolutely not".

  21. Govt open to Mobile Virtual Network Operators: Telecom Secretary NEW DELHI: Amid controversy over the Tatas' deal with British company Virgin for offering value-added telecom services, the government today said it was open to the idea of allowing Mobile Virtual Network Operators. "We are open to this... Indian telecom market is maturing and this can be allowed," Telecom Secretary Siddartha Behura told reporters on the sidelines of a function here. Under Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO), companies buy airtime from mobile players and sell it in their own brand name. GSM operators have been opposing the move, saying this is not allowed as per the existing licencing conditions. The government has sought clarifications from the Tatas about their deal with Virgin, Behura said, while dismissing reports that the Department of Telecom has put the deal on hold. Tatas have said it was only a franchise agreement between the two companies and no clause of the telecom licence has been violated as alleged by the GSM operators' lobby Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). "Some of the operators have sought clarifications about the Mobile Virtual Network Operators and we are looking into it," Behura said. The COAI has written two letters to Behura saying Tatas' joint venture with Virgin is a blatant violation of the license and has caused a loss of Rs 1,651 crore to the exchequer as Virgin would become a virtual operator without acquiring a licence. Tatas have also launched a counter attack on the GSM players and questioned the outsourcing of complete infrastructure to foreign companies by some of the mobile players such as Bharti and Vodafone.
  22. NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel on Tuesday announced a slew of partnerships for mobile commerce services including mobile money transfer. Bharti said it has entered into agreements with India’s leading banks ICICI bank, HDFC bank, SBI, Corporation bank and also with financial services major VISA to offer three specialised services Mobile Money Transfer (MMT), postpaid bill payment and prepaid recharge. Besides, Bharti Airtel customers can also make payments over their mobiles for air, rail and movie tickets. These solutions have been developed by mChek, a leading provider of mobile security and payment solutions. Additionally, these services have been certified by PCIDSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards), a stringent globally accepted security standard, the company added. The catch is that to avail any of the above applications, all Airtel mobile customers with compatible handsets need to download the application. Bharti Airtel director marketing & communications Gopal Vittal said that mobile money transfer services would be launched across the country on March 15. “At the first stage, only transfers within India will be possible. Later, we will launch the platform that will help residents outside India to transfer money back home via their mobiles— we are awaiting regulatory clearances for this,” Mr Vittal said. Bharti has already tied up with the world’s largest money transfer company Western Union for international mobile money transfer services. Put simply, the mobile money transfer services launched on March 15 will therefore be limited to those customers who have a VISA credit or debit card issued by ICICI, HDFC, or Corporation Bank. Further, the receiver can collect the transferred amount only if they have a VISA card. In addition, SBI customers will be able to transfer money from one SBI account to another SBI account or to any VISA debit/credit card in the country. Mr Vittal also added that the Bharti planned to roll-out cash-to-cash money transfers by the year-end. “We will require separate regulatory clearances before we can offer this service,” he said. The post-paid bill payment facility also allows subscribers to pay bills of their friends & family over the mobile. Ditto to the prepaid recharge option. “Airtel has extensively piloted these products across the country. It already has 67,000 registered customers for Postpaid bill payments with over a hundred thousand transactions running into several crore. In addition over 17,000 movie tickets have been bought using this service,” Mr Vittal added. “We see the mobile becoming the convergence instrument, which allows all banking transactions to be done with complete security and that too on the move. This initiative will help usher in a new era of mobile based payments, more particularly person to person fund transfers,” Group Head – Retail Liabilities, Marketing & Direct Banking Channels, HDFC Bank, Rahul Bhagat said in a statement. ICICI’s senior general manager Sachin Khandelwal said that the Airtel mChek platform would extend the horizon of banking services to new frontiers.
