Isnt it just? Bold new design, bold new flavor? We are really not feeling the name here, but it may be that Waterloo’s home team has decided to plonk the name Bold on the BlackBerry 9000. Perhaps they’ve just decided to tout the horn a bit with this wild and crazy departure from typical BlackBerry fare — come on, check how rounded those corners are. Either way, the boldly large and curvy handset is surely going to cause a ruckus once announced and dropped on your local retailer’s shelves. We’re still feeling the name BlackBerry Clunk might have been better, but hey, that’s just us. the first thought on our minds when we saw the BlackBerry 9000 in its natural habitat for the first time was, "that's it?" RIM's been taking on increasingly sharp competition as of late -- even in its traditional corporate strongholds -- and we'd expected and hoped to see something less evolutionary and more revolutionary from these cats. On closer inspection, though, we find that the phone is leaving a very positive second impression. The phone's lines seem flow really well (dare we call a BlackBerry "sexy"?) without losing its purpose-suited stance exuded by the 8300s, 8700s, and 8800s of yore. The real kicker, though, might be the beautiful user interface, which has been totally revamped from the ground up; gone is the cartoonish look and feel of the current lineup, replaced with a modern, warm theme with wireframe icons and slick animations. Another big win: as Vodafone's slide deck mentioned, the 9000 features both WiFi and HSDPA, confirmed by this particular example's info display. Too little, too late -- or is this thing a genuine threat in the marketplace this year? Follow the break for a video of the hot new UI in action!

Apple leapfrogs RIM for #2 slot on smartphone sales list Nokia has had the lion's share of the cell phone market for many years, including the market for high-end smartphones. But rival RIM and new kid on the block Apple are taking a bite out of Nokia's market share, leading to the first drop in smartphone sales for the Finnish cell phone maker. According to market research firm Canalys, Nokia lost over 12 percent of the total share of the smartphone market in the third quarter this year, dropping to 38.9 percent from 51.4 percent the year before. Apple swiftly jumped in second place, grabbing a 17.3 percent share with the iPhone 3G. Apple even bested sales of RIM's popular BlackBerry models, but the firm is not far behind, taking 15.2 percent of the smartphone market. Apple's success has a lot to do with the launch of its updated iPhone 3G, which in addition to increasing data network speeds, has been launched in many new markets. Indeed, the iPhone has expanded to 57 countries in the past quarter. Sales of nearly 7 million 3G iPhones since the July 11 launch also gave Apple a 2.3 percent share of the overall cellphone market. Microsoft is also feeling the effect of the iPhone's popularity, as its performance pushed the software giant in the number two spot among smartphone OS vendors. CEO Steve Ballmer famously quipped last year that he didn't expect Apple to do very well, saying, "There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share." Apple, along with third-place RIM, pushed Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform down to fourth place among smartphone OS vendors. It's not surprising to see Nokia losing market share, given all of the activity focused on the smartphone market as of late. With Apple improving the iPhone OS and adding tons of new apps to the App Store; BlackBerry launching new Storm, Bold, and Pearl models; and Google jumping in the fray with its Linux-based Android smartphone OS, competition for the smartphone market has never been hotter. It may hurt Nokia's bottom line, but it will benefit consumers as increasing numbers of users move from standard "feature phones" to more powerful smartphones. [vIa:http://arstechnica.com/] -
MTNL’s fibre-to-home service coming soon Source: Daily News & Analysis State-owned telco will become the first operator to offer the platform next week MUMBAI: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), the state-owned telecom utility for Mumbai and Delhi, is set to become the first operator to unveil its ultra high speed fibre-to-home broadband and entertainment services next week. Sources said the company has planned a technology demonstration at a location in Dwarka in Delhi. “The service will utilise MTNL’s existing investments into internet protocol television (IPTV). However, it will offer higher speeds and provide newer services such as high-definition video and even high-definition TV channels, gaming etc,” said a company official. Even though most of the flat-panel televisions (LCD and plasma) support high-definition (HD) content, cable operators and direct-to-home (DTH) service providers don’t provide the service as it consumes a large amount of data bandwidth. MTNL’s IPTV service too does not provide HDTV due to bandwidth constraints. The official, however, said MTNL is unlikely to commercially launch the service immediately. “Technically, it is a much simpler network than the traditional copper line-based service. However, it will require us to lay fibre from the exchanges to the homes. All the exchanges are already interconnected with fibre,” he said. While opportunities in fibre-to-home segment are being explored by many operators, including Reliance Communications which has been running trials for years, most have shelved their plans in favour of DTH. Both Reliance Communications and Bharti Airtel recently launched their DTH services. But MTNL is “more serious” about the fibre alternative than the others, the official said. The move comes as fixed-line operators the world over replace their last-mile copper connections with fibre. According to a report released two weeks ago by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, fibre has overtaken copper as the most popular method of accessing data in homes in Japan, where it accounts for 46% of the total connections. A UK-based broadband research firm Point Topic said China alone added 2.5 million fibre optic subscriber homes in the first quarter of this year. India, in comparison, has none. Romal Shetty, head of communications industry at audit and advisory firm KPMG India, said, “The killer service for fibre-to-home is IPTV. But IPTV has not been a success in India.” Shetty sees telecom operators’ current infatuation with DTH as a phase. “It is not a question of if, but when. But for the next 3-4 years, most private operators are likely to keep their focus on DTH,” he said. State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is assessing the fibre-to-home technology.

Videocon delays DTH foray Source: The Economic Times NEW DELHI: Consumer electronics major Videocon has delayed the launch of its Direct-to-home (DTH) venture. The company had earlier said it would start pilot tests in July and launch commercially in August. Videocon’s DTH brand, D2H, would be the sixth player to enter the DTH space. Videocon Industries director Saurabh Dhoot said, “We haven’t delayed our launch. We would start testing signals before the year end and launch it next year. I can’t reveal the exact date of the launch.” As per industry sources, Videocon would not be in a position to launch its DTH venture commercially before March next year. The company has announced plans to invest Rs 1,000 crore in the next three year on its DTH business. The company has also said that it would offer its product at competitive prices and would leverage its consumer durable customer base to grab the initial numbers. According to industry sources, there could be atleast one additional company who has applied for DTH license and has also talked to technology partners. India would be the first country in the world to have 6-7 DTH players and industry experts believe it would be a formidable task for them to exist and maintain the subscriber numbers. News Corp owned NDS Group chairman & CEO Abe Peled who was recently on an India visit had said, “If you ask me, it is difficult for seven DTH companies to coexist.” NDS provides digital cable and DTH companies with pay television technology. The entry of R-ADAG’s Big TV and Airtel digital television triggered a price war which has adversely impacted the profitability of DTH players. Dish TV is now looking at increasing its prices. Industry experts believe consumers attracted to players with low prices have zero loyalty factor and therefore players could loose such subscribers after they end their promotional offers.

Are you ready to forget the Xperia X1? Probably not, but listen up here: Sony Ericsson is getting ready to release a new touchscreen handset that will bring 8GB of internal memory and an 8 Megapixel camera. This handset’s codename is Sony Ericsson Hikaru and, according to the SEMC Blog, it will be the next high-end slider of the Swedish-Japanese manufacturer. For the moment, it’s not clear where Hikaru will fit into Sony Ericsson’s range of products. Will it be a Walkman, a Cyber-shot, or perhaps a G-series? Who knows? Also, it’s not clear if it will have an alphanumeric or a QWERTY keyboard, but I guess any of these two would be nice to have, together with the phone’s supposedly large touchscreen display. Since there’s no image with the real Sony Ericsson Hikaru, I’ve played around a bit and made a mockup of it, based on SE’s W960 model. Here it is:Are you ready to forget the Xperia X1? In addition to Nokia's lowest cost handset to date, as well as its first handset for emerging markets with an integrated digital music player, Nokia unveiled a range of services that leverage the power of the Internet. Unitech sells its 60% telecom stake to Telenor New Delhi, Oct 29: Real estate major Unitech on Wednesday announced selling of 60 per cent stake in its telecom venture for Rs 6,120 crore (about 1.23 billion dollar) to Norway-based Telenor, which has mobile operations in 12 countries with 160 million subscribers. Unitech was awarded pan-India mobile telecom license for Rs 1,651 crore early this year and has got GSM spectrum in 13 circles. The company plans to launch services in the first half of 2009. "This is a landmark deal. At a time when lot of foreign exchange is outflowing, this deal will bring in much needed foreign exchange into the country," Unitech's telecom venture Chairman Sanjay Chandra said. The deal has put the enterprise value of Unitech's telecom business at a whopping Rs 11,620 crore (2.35 billion dollar), he said adding the company would now start the process of rolling out network through out the country. Telenor, world's seventh largest mobile operator has operations in Europe and Asian countries, including 100 per cent subsidiary in Pakistan. This is the second deal among the new GSM operators. Earlier, Swan Telecom with license for 13 circles had sold 45 per cent stake to UAE-based Etisalat for 900 million dollars. Chandra said the approval for sale of 49 per cent stake has already been received and the company would soon approach FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) for 60 per cent stake-sale. In a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange, Unitech said that its telecom arm intends to play a significant role in India's exciting story of telecom growth and become a long term and successful telecom operator. "In light of this aspiration, the company will be investing over USD three billion over the next three years," it said. Unitech Wireless has pan-India telecom licenses in all 22 circles and plan to launch its services in first half of 2009. The company has already recruited more than 250 employees and established offices across several cities. Headquartered in Oslo, Norway, Telenor is a global provider of high quality telecommunications, data and media communication services. It is owned 54 per cent by Ministry of Industry and Trade, Norway. Shares of Unitech Ltd were trading at Rs 49.15 at 1230 hrs today. [vIa:zeenews] -
[vIa:engadgetmobile] Now check it in high-gloss, plastic flesh. The latest Japanese super-phone squeezes 480 x 800 pixel into a 3.1-inch OLED display. Let that sink in for a second... the very same 384,000 pixels on a display smaller than the 3.8-inch LCD heralded by the Touch HD. The camera features a wide-angle lens, 9-point auto focus, face detection, anti-shake, and a YouTube video mode that records VGA video at 30fps to microSD. All this in a Japanese-only flip measuring 110 x 50 x 17.4 ~ 22-mm when it launches in early November. well i must say that casio has always been known for its quality of products and i am sur ethat this phone's gonna rock! will post the complete specs asap.

Google Earth for the iPhone Released! [vIa:Gearthblog] At long last, Google is releasing Google Earth for the iPhone (and iTouch) tonight (Sunday)! I've been expecting this to happen for months. Especially after I saw another Google Earth-like application on the iPhone back in May. Apparently some folks in Australia were first to downloaded Google Earth for the iPhone. CNET has an initial review - and it looks fantastic. I quickly managed to download it - see my updated review below (this app is awesome!). You can click here to download GE for the iPhone from the iTunes app store - it's free of course. Or you can search the app store from your iPhone. Here is Google's announcement video which shows the app in action: I've had a while now to play with GE for the iPhone. Here is my initial review (quick summary: I'm really impressed!): Looks just like Google Earth when it first comes up. Zooming in with the usual touch motion on the iPhone works just like expected. And, at least on my home WIFI, the speed loading imagery is quite good. Much closer to the normal GE than I expected. In fact, I estimate on my non-3G iPhone I'm getting about 5-7 frames per second update rates zoomed out, and over 10 fps zoomed in closer. Quite good! You definitely feel like you're using Google Earth. If you enable "Autotilt" by selecting the preference window (the "i" icon in the lower right) when you lift up your phone vertically the horizon will tilt into view. If you go to somewhere with mountains or other terrain you'll see it in 3D just like in the normal GE. Google includes the Panoramio and Wikipedia layers under the "Geographic Web" by default. Click on a blue photo icon when you see one, and it will load the Panoramio photo for that location. hit the "Earth" button at the top of the photo to return back to GE. If you don't want the icons, or want to get a little speed increase, then turn these off in the preference window. You also have layers for borders and labels (city names, country names, etc.) which you can also turn off if you don't need them. AMAZING - they even support off-line mode just like the desktop GE! If you have no connection, GE will prompt you and let you "continue without network" and will work off your cache. So, if you've previously viewed places, you can go back there and still see them with no Internet connection! To test this, you can just put your iPhone in "Airplane" mode (to turn off wireless connections) and then re-start the iPhone GE application. Tilt your iPhone horizontally for a wider view. The upper left "magnifying glass" let's you do a search. This works just like with the normal GE and let's you search for places, airport codes, or you can enter lat/long coordinates. I'm very pleased with how it zooms just like the normal GE to each location. The lower left icon is the "locate me" button which will fly you to your current location (using the iPhone location feature). With this release, there are just the 4 layers mentioned above. You also can not load up other KML files or save your own placemarks at this point. But, I'm sure other features will come in future releases. The "Help" window is found in the preferences window (or here on the web) and gives tips on the interface. If you use two fingers you can do things like twist your view, tilt the horizon (by dragging two fingers up/down), if you double-tap two fingers you zoom out, double-tap one finger zooms in. The finger interfaces are very intuitive. Overall I'm very impressed with Google Earth for the iPhone. I'm thrilled I'll be able to take it with me wherever I go. However, I'm sure performance will be a much slower when I'm on the Edge network instead of with a WIFI connection. All you GE fans with an iPhone - go out there and download it now! -
Updated: Htc Dream! Google Selling Unlocked G1 Phones In India !
@ksh@T replied to Honest's topic in HTC
Security Flaw Is Revealed in T-Mobile’s Google Phone [vIa:NYtimes] SAN FRANCISCO — Just days after the T-Mobile G1 smartphone went on the market, a group of security researchers have found what they call a serious flaw in the Android software from Google that runs it. One of the researchers, Charles A. Miller, notified Google of the flaw this week and said he was publicizing it now because he believed that cellphone users were not generally aware that increasingly sophisticated smartphones faced the same threats that plague Internet-connected personal computers. Mr. Miller, a former National Security Agency computer security specialist, said the flaw could be exploited by an attacker who might trick a G1 user into visiting a booby-trapped Web site. The G1 — the so-called Google phone — went on sale at T-Mobile stores on Wednesday. Google executives acknowledged the issue but said that the security features of the phone would limit the extent of damage that could be done by an intruder, compared with today’s PCs and other cellphones. Unlike modern personal computers and other advanced smartphones like the iPhone, the Google phone creates a series of software compartments that limit the access of an intruder to a single application. “We wanted to sandbox every single application because you can’t trust any of them,” said Rich Cannings, a Google security engineer. He said that the company had already fixed an open-source version of the software and was working with its partners, T-Mobile and HTC, to offer fixes for its current customers. Typically, today’s computer operating systems try to limit access by creating a partition between a single user’s control of the machine and complete access to programs and data, which is referred to as superuser, root or administrative access. The risk in the Google design, according to Mr. Miller, who is a principal security analyst at Independent Security Evaluators in Baltimore, lies in the danger from within the Web browser partition in the phone. It would be possible, for example, for an intruder to install software that would capture keystrokes entered by the user when surfing to other Web sites. That would make it possible to steal identity information or passwords. Mr. Miller has previously gained attention for finding other vulnerabilities. In March, he received $10,000 and a Macintosh Air laptop in a contest at the CanSecWest security conference by reading the contents of a file stored on a Mac laptop by directing the machine to a Web site that was able to exploit a vulnerability in Apple’s Safari browser. Google executives said they believed that Mr. Miller had violated an unwritten code between companies and researchers that is intended to give companies time to fix problems before they are publicized. Mr. Miller said he was withholding technical details, but said he felt that consumers had a right to know that products had shortcomings. -
