  1. @ Ashok

I am pretty much sure that they installed the old Binatone modem that the engineers took from my place when I disconnected the broadband connection. In fact, I think they cleaned it up a bit before installing it over there! Dont worry; they installed a second hand modem at my place too - when I asked for it, the reply was prompt - no new modems...do you need to connection today or can you wait until the new batch of modems come?

Regarding the speed issue - did you check the rate at which your modem is synching with the exchange? If you are on a 4mbps connection, then the downstream rate should be some value above it. (I have not yet gone through the entire thread; forgive me for asking if you have already posted this information).

I had to disconnect my reliance broadband connection because of the exact reasons that you are facing currently now.

    1) I had a 1mbps UL plan. But the modem was synching at 1024 kbps with the exchange. The result - I was getting 600 to 800 kbps. After repeated complaining, someone flipped some switch and made altered my speed profile to 2048 kbps. I could enjoy the promised 1mbps for sometime, until they changed the speed profile back to 1024 kbps. Repeated requests to change the speed profile fell on deaf ears.

    2) It took a minimum of two days for the local team of engineers to respond to my complaints. Even then, the majority of the times, they would close the complaint without resolving it. Quite often, I had to ask for help from one of my cousins ( a senior corporate engineer within the company to call these guys and ask them about the status of my complaint; only then, they will turn up at my premises).

    3) No one understands anything you will tell them; especially the senior engineers. An engineer once asked me the following - how could you find the downstream values and the attenuation rates by sitting at home when such data is supposedly only available with the central server system!! When I told him about accessing the modem's web portal interface via 192.168.1.1, he was asking me - how can you do such things? In short, it appears that he did not have any idea about accessing the modem in these ways.

This particular incident was the last straw. I ditched the connection and took TATA Docomo Wired BB and Asianet DOCSIS 3.0 connections. I need constant access to the internet 24/7 because of the nature of my profession. Asianet is rock solid - it is always there and has never let me down. Docomo is somewhat akin to Reliance BB. But the engineers are polite and work hard to fix things. So I am okay with them too!

All the best with your Reliance BB connection. Have you asked about the Wimax feasibility from BSNL in your area? Check out Airtel BB too. They too offer exemplerary services in Trivandrum. Disconnecting my Airtel BB and taking up Reliance BB was one of the worst mistakes of my life. I see that now Airtel has some good BB plans from Trivandrum.

  2. Got in touch with some Asianet officials today.

They have increased the price of the cable modem to 3950/-. (they term this as the installation charge)

The modem will always be the property of Asianet.

If we decide to terminate the connection within six months, they will ask us to pay 750 + taxes. (they term this also as the installation charge)

Even after paying the hefty amount, we wont get the modem for ourselves (for future use with other similar ISPs)!

The Dart 1999 plan will require me to pay 1999/- and additional taxes.

  3. Good review.

    I have some questions.

    1) The cable modem price is 3500/-. Is there any minimum hire period for the service? What if I am not satisfied with the quality of the connection - and would like to disconnect it? If at all such a situation occurs, will Asianet refund the said amount (or at least a reasonable portion of it)?

    2) If I take Dart 1999, will I have to pay just 1999 or 1999 + taxes?

I am not familiar with the policies of this particular ISP since I have not used it earlier. Hence, these queries popped up in my mind. BTW, how is the connection now? Are you facing the same set of issues?

  4. I wanted to check the feasibility of Wimax in my area. Applied for a connection last week; got the name and mobile number of someone who gives the connection over here. Since the guy did not show even by yesterday, I decided to call him and inquire ..

He replied that BSNL has not provided him with any transportation options at the moment. So he is waiting for that to happen and only then he can turn up over here to check the feasibility.

  5. Do you have any particular broker in mind? I mean have you experienced these issues with any real world fx broker when trading with a live account?

I have been trading in the FX markets since some time. Never experienced the issues posted by you with my broker (Oanda). And mind you, Oanda is commonly termed as a 'bucket shop' by many so-called 'experts'.

The only thing which I do not like about Oanda is the drastic increase in the spread rates (10 - 15 pips) when a major news announcement is taking place. If one knows where to enter and place their stop loss, that too is not an issue after all.

  6. Dear friends, Gillette Fusion sample comes in single pack separately and not with other samples of P&G. So you will receive Gillette Fusion separately. :)

True. It seems they have resumed shipping it. I just received my Gillette Fusion sample pack. :)
